- Abstract
Both domestic and foreign policy considerations led Eastern European nations in the 1970s to involve their economies more deeply with the West. This increased economic interdependence encompassed trade, technology transfer through industrial cooperation, and international credit. These growing links came as a mixed blessing as Western economic problems – inflation, recession, unemployment, energy – began to affect the economic development and political stability in Eastern Europe.First published in 1981, East–West Relations and the Future of Eastern Europe examines the implications of these problems for East–West relations and the domestic scene in Eastern Europe. The authors analyze the interaction of economic and political forces at three interlocking levels – international, regional, and national. The first part deals with the evolution of East–West political and economic relations in the 1970s and the prospects for the 1980s and considers the implications of developments in East–West relations for Soviet and East European regional, economic, political, and military ties. Thereafter, experts from East and West offer their perspectives on political economic strategies for individual East European countries, in the context of their regional and international relations. This book will be of interest to students of comparative economics, international trade, and international relations.

- Abstract
Illicit financial flows (IFFs) associated with commodity trade erode the tax base of resource-rich developing countries. Efforts to curb IFFs and reform taxation stumble over enhanced North–South tensions but remain crucial to helping poorer countries mobilise domestic resources for development. The 17th volume of International Development Policy examines this key part of the wider agenda to restore trust in the multilateral system, calling for a more transparent, effective and equitable trade and tax framework. Based on a six-year multidisciplinary research project encompassing academic institutions in commodity exporting and trading countries, its 24 authors offer a mix of theoretical and empirical contributions and discuss findings of macro- and micro-level studies. The book sheds new light on issues such as addressing push and pull factors through domestic and international policy measures, the preferences of key stakeholders for short-term fixes versus long-term policy reforms, and prescriptive approaches and other options to address tax base erosion in resource-rich developing countries.

5. The Sustainability Revolution in International Trade Agreements
- Author

- Abstract
Once seen as aspirational and relatively innocuous,'sustainability'or'sustainable development'provisions are now changing the face of international trade agreements. The Sustainability Revolution in International Trade Agreements gathers fundamental, first-hand analyses of these novel commitments across dozens of agreements, considering their legal, political, and economic aspects. Drawing on perspectives from different parts of the world and engaging experts in the law and practice of sustainability provisions, this volume offers a comprehensive assessment of the latest developments and innovations in international trade agreements. It also evaluates the development challenges that sustainability requirements pose for countries with limited resources and capacity, for whom lower labour and environmental regulatory costs have been a competitive asset. The present volume explores the intersectional aspects of sustainability - such as gender equality, biodiversity, animal welfare, and Indigenous rights - in addition to the more traditional dimensions of sustainability, namely economic development, environmental conservation, and improvement of labour standards. There is little doubt that a sustainability revolution in global production patterns is needed. Considering the details of its operation - how it can come into being, who will bear the increased production costs, and how decisions on difficult trade-offs will be made - reveals the immense challenges involved in developing a new international law for sustainable trade. Read together, the chapters in this volume outline the contours this emerging legal framework, examine its practical operation, and offer important reflections upon the real extent and the foreseeable consequences of this sustainability revolution in international trade agreements.

6. International Capitalism and Industrial Restructuring : A Critical Analysis

- Abstract
First published in 1987, International Capitalism and Industrial Restructuring counters the idea that industrial restructuring is a relatively problem-free stage in the evolution to a post-industrial society. The editor argues that the permanent loss of eight million manufacturing jobs in the advanced industrial countries over the past ten years has had extremely serious effects on people, economies, and societies, and that it is a major cause of economic recession. The six million jobs gained in the newly industrializing countries pay low wages, expose workers to hazards, destroy local cultures, and fail in generating integrated development for the Third World. Many outstanding articles are included, drawn from a wide variety of radical journals, with introductions that set the scene and pose challenging questions. All students and researchers concerned with industrial restructuring in the capitalist world will find the book valuable as a radical critique of widespread current economic problems.

- Abstract
First published in 1970, Britain and America 1850–1939 is a key text for anyone seeking to trace and interpret the development of the two great trans-Atlantic economies. The authors present a comparative survey of the economic development of Britain and America. The book compares and contrasts the economic and social progress of the two countries in the period of rapid industrialization and dramatic social change between 1850 and 1939. Throughout, the authors explain the interaction of the two economies upon each other and give reasons – social and political as well as economic – for the outstanding differences in the economic life of the two countries. Separate chapters give a comprehensive account of agriculture, transport, trade unions, banking, overseas trade, industry, and social problems. Among the individual topics considered are the economic significance of the Civil War, the influence of the railways, migration of labour and export of capital, the retardation of the British economy, the great slump of the 1930s and the New Deal. The authors support their arguments with numerous statistical tables, charts, and diagrams. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of economics and history.

- Abstract
Entrepreneurship is a tool of innovation promotion that supports sound economic environments as it stimulates economic growth and development. The BRICS nations, i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are a group of emerging countries comprising the highest developmental block of the emerging nations. It is imperative to assess the entrepreneurship policies, strategies, and promotional programmes and their implications for, among others, entrepreneurship funding, economic growth, and employment trends. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the entrepreneurship environment and equally steered state funding priorities away from entrepreneurship development support worldwide. This research book assesses the effect that COVID-19 has had on government funding priority, policy interventions and resultant implications on the entrepreneurship environment, economic growth and employment with a focus on BRICS. Readers will gain insight into what entrepreneurship looks like in the BRICS context and how it has been affected by COVID-19, indicating how the BRICS nations are likely to move forward to further strengthen entrepreneurship. This edited volume will be of interest to researchers, academics, practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, strategy, international relations, multilateralism, and economic development.

- Abstract
The world has witnessed the proliferation of Mega-Regional Trade Agreements (MRTAs), and this book critically examines a range of issues with MRTAs starting from their genesis to their economic clout over the world, the likely implications for member countries'integration, and the challenges they pose for non-member countries.Gaur focuses on concerns and challenges that non-member countries like India, South Africa, and Argentina, among others are facing with the World Trade Organization (WTO) standstill and how these MRTAs are becoming a cause of concern for the multilateral trade organization. The book also discusses the major reasons for India's withdrawal from Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and tries to answer these questions – Should India join RCEP or the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)? Taking into account India's economic and strategic concerns, various models and indices are used to evaluate the effect on trade and investment. It also emphasizes the trade and investment linkages of India in these mega-regionals and the consequences for MRTA member countries. The consequences of India's absence from the RCEP and mega-regionalism in general are also examined. This book is useful for research scholars working in the field of international economics as well as government aids and policymakers. It will also be valuable for classes in international trade and integration, international relations, international security and regional studies.

- Abstract
This book examines why democracy has failed to deliver effective solutions to income inequality problems over the last four decades, and if democracy can offer solutions to various increases in inequality in the future. It also addresses what elements are necessary for democracy to serve as an effective alternative for addressing inequality issues.Historical experiences over the past 40 years, including the global financial crisis, not only underscore the need for fresh perspectives on income inequality in economics but also question the ability of democracy to continue providing alternatives for addressing the escalating forms of inequality. Seo and Kang's response to these inquiries diverge from conventional research in several significant ways. Primarily, what sets this research apart from existing studies is its intensified focus on income inequality as a product of the complex interplay between the political and economic domains, rather than a standalone examination of income inequality in isolation. Through a political economy perspective, this book argues that income inequality and income redistribution are shaped by the institutions, policies, and laws generated by the political system, with their formation and nature being determined by the power distribution among socio-political groups.A useful resource not only to researchers who study political phenomena in the field of economics, but also to scholars who study economic phenomena in the field of politics. Furthermore, it will be particularly intriguing for policy makers concerned with issues of inequality and income redistribution.

- Abstract
The issue of riba, that is, interest/the'excess'or'surplus'on loans is crucial for both Islamic and non-Islamic countries. Western economic systems use interest to distribute financial resources efficiently for investment and/or consumption, while Islamic economies pursue a completely different strategy for financing loans, which adheres to Islamic laws and prohibits the activities of conventional banking systems with regard to interest. This book argues that there is scope for new definitions and analysis based on alternative concepts which respect Islamic values and principles, yet pave the way for modification and debate. The book comprises of two parts. Theoretical issues are dealt with in the first section. The first two chapters examine conventional Islamic views on the prohibition of riba, while Chapters 3 and 4 contain unprecedented and alternative theoretical analysis based on concepts such as'earned'(halal-permitted-legal) vs.'unearned'(haram-impermissible-illegal) income and SUKUK, that is, Islamic interest-free bonds. The second part of the book tackles another unconventional aspect of Islamic finance, that is, the concept of NAS. The book considers whether the NAS-influenced anti-inflationary interest policy was a success or failure. Empirical data is evaluated in terms of bank incomes, inflation rate, interest rate, and the distribution of income. This book will be a useful guide for students, scholars, and researchers of Islamic banking and finance.

- Abstract
Countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have economies that are categorised as capital deficit, whereas economies with abundant capital – such as those in Western Europe and North America – have lost little value in comparison during the global pandemic and other economic periods of this downturn. It is therefore a question of resilience that separates these developing economies. The Framework for Resilient Industry examines the historical background of the Indian industry, its current status, and future opportunities and challenges. The chapters frame the historical context of the Indian industry and delves into region-specific issues such as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), economic policy, risk management and sustainable industries. The findings are valuable to policymakers, industrialists, and governments, both state and central, through efficient analysis. Academics, researchers, and students will also benefit from this discourse on economic resiliency. Emerald Studies in Finance, Insurance, and Risk Management provides a platform for authors to explore, analyse and discuss current and new financial models and theories, and engage with innovative research on an international scale. Subjects of interest may include banking, accounting, auditing, compliance, sustainability, behaviour, management, and business economics.

- Abstract
A Clash of Civilisations is not inevitable, yet danger mounts the longer the West ignores its top forecaster. In 2023, the OECD sees China's economy as 27% bigger than the US: by mid-century 70%. India too will be larger, leaving America as No.3. Time to Get Real: listen to economists, especially development economists, and those in business who know China.Three giant shocks lurk right ahead for the West: economic, demographic and competence. 90% of the world's population will soon be non-Western: no more accepting exclusion from global decision making. After COVID, Afghanistan and domestic turmoil, many question Western competence to get things right, let alone avoid nuclear destruction.Economic size, not military might, is what counts among Great Powers. As leading military historian Paul Kennedy wrote, military strength is,'inextricably intertwined with economic power and technological progress'. This need not threaten the West if understood and managed properly. Indeed, it would mitigate the real existential threats, from the environment to war. Otherwise nuclear conflict, Kissinger's'Armageddon-like clash', is ever more likely.A New New World with growing muscle and some different ideas is emerging. How can the West best respond? The book proposes a Biden-Xi Grand Bargain, as Nixon struck with Mao. Grasp what Yin and Yang offer, as opposites can support each other for lasting mutual benefit.

LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR NONFICTION AND THE 2024 FINANCIAL TIMES AND SCHRODERS BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD This unprecedented look inside the global battle to power our lives is “required reading for anyone interested in the 360-degree impacts of the energy transition” (Daniel Poneman, former US Deputy Secretary of Energy) from acclaimed Reuters reporter Ernest Scheyder. To build electric vehicles, solar panels, cell phones, and millions of other devices means the world must dig more mines to extract lithium, copper, and other vital building blocks. But mines are deeply unpopular, even as they have a role to play in fighting climate change and powering crucial technologies. These tensions have sparked a worldwide reckoning over the sourcing of necessary materials, and no one understands the complexities of these issues better than Ernest Scheyder. The War Below reveals the explosive brawl among industry titans, conservationists, community groups, policymakers, and many others over whether the habitats of rare plants, sensitive ecosystems, Indigenous holy sites, and other places should be dug up for their riches. With accessible and “illuminating” (Chris Miller, author of Chip War) writing, Scheyder shows the human toll of this war and explains why recycling and other newer technologies have struggled to gain widespread use. He also expertly chronicles Washington's attempts to wean itself off supplies from China, the global leader in mineral production and processing. The War Below paints a powerfully honest and nuanced picture of what is at stake in this new fight for energy independence, revealing how America and the rest of the world's hunt for the “new oil” directly affects us all.

- Abstract
Nonreciprocal preferential trade arrangements are a defining feature of the relationship between developed and developing countries dating back to the colonial era. In the late 1950s, these arrangements started to take a multilateral form when members of the European Economic Community established special trade arrangements with their colonies. Since then, several trade arrangements have featured African countries among the preference-receiving countries. Yet it is not always clear how preferential these arrangements are and whether they in fact help African countries or instead lead them to perpetual dependence on specific markets and products. Richard E. Mshomba carefully examines the history of these programs and their salient features. He analyzes negotiations between the EU and African countries to form Economic Partnership Agreements. Nonreciprocal preferential trade arrangements are often unpredictable, since the duration and magnitude of preferences are at the discretion of the preference-giving countries. However, when used in conjunction with other development programs and with laws and regulations that encourage long-term investment and protect employees, they can increase economic opportunities and foster human development. This book recognizes the potential impact of nonreciprocal preferential trade arrangements and provides recommendations to increase their viability.

- Author

Allen James Fromherz and Allen James Fromherz
- Abstract
This sweeping history reorients our understanding of the Middle East, placing the Gulf at the heart of globalized trade and cross-cultural encounters. World history began in the Persian Gulf. The ancient port cities that dotted its coastlines created the first global seaboard, a place from where faiths and cultures from around the world set sail and made contact. More than a history, The Center of the World shows us that contradictions that define our modern age have always been present. For over four thousand years, the Gulf—sometimes called the Persian Gulf, sometimes the Arabian Gulf—has been a global crossroads while managing to avoid control by the world's greatest empires. In its history, we see a world of rapid change, fluctuating centers of trade, a dependency on uncertain global markets, and intense cross-cultural encounters that hold a mirror to the contemporary world. Focusing each chapter on a different port around the Gulf, The Center of the World shows how the people of the Gulf adapted to larger changes in world history, creating a system of free trade, merchant rule, and commerce that continues to define the region today.

- Abstract
«This relevant, clearly defined study isn't constricted by its primary focus on late nineteenth-century American utopias, written when inequality flourished. Morris enriches this focus with chronological comparisons to well-known and lesser-known American utopias in other periods; international contexts from non-American authors; and interpretive perspectives by utopian specialists, political scientists, philosophers, and sociologists. But the book's most striking quality is the variety of reforms identified and discussed. This variety greatly enhances our understanding of utopists'war on inequality.» (Kenneth M. Roemer, Emeritus Fellow, University of Texas System Academy of Distinguished Teachers. Author of The Obsolete Necessity, Utopian Audiences, and (ed.) America as Utopia «Utopian alternatives to current, persistent and increasing inequality matter: as William Blake said, ‘What is now proved was once, only imagin'd', and so Donald Morris examines a wealth of possibilities, some outlandish, but all conceivable, and many eminently feasible, from a tradition of literary and imaginative forms of political and social theory. A hopeful and invigorating read.» (Tom Boland, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, University College Cork) This work explores what utopian writers have said about economic inequality. Its transdisciplinary focus is literary utopias—novels of social theory—by authors seeking solutions to the problems of economic inequality. The work challenges our moral assumptions about economic inequality—its potential for resolution—or its inevitability and the ultimate bifurcation of society. It is not an economic treatise but an exploration in social philosophy in its utopian expressions. Economic inequality sets arbitrary limits on whose contributions will benefit society, thereby squandering talent, limiting opportunities, and stifling competition—capriciously restricting the pool of competitors—by class or gender or race. As utopian writers envision a future where the extremes of poverty and wealth have been tempered, it is instructive to explore the instruments they employ; by what measures have they defeated poverty or diminished the threats boundless fortunes pose, thereby revitalizing society?

- Abstract
Why did the West become rich? Was it the product of institutions, culture, and economic policies? Or were foreign expansion, imperialist exploitation and the slave trade the keys to prosperity? In this book, Kristian Niemietz takes the reader beyond the ‘Culture War'debates around the legacy of the British Empire, and looks at the economics of imperialism. By examining the empirical work of modern historians of colonialism, as well as the views of contemporary figures ranging from Adam Smith to Karl Marx, Niemietz explores a debate which has raged for three centuries and is only growing more contentious. Drawing on data from various European colonial empires, Niemietz casts doubt on the claim – popular among both 19th-century imperialists and modern-day progressives – that empire was a crucial factor in the West's rise to prosperity. Instead, he shows that – its immorality aside – Western colonialism was simply bad economics. Far from being a story of plunder leading to sustained growth, the story of empire is an all too familiar tale of vested interests using the state to secure private benefits while leaving the taxpayer to foot the bill.

- Abstract
In this work titled, It Can Be Done in Government: An Approach for Improving Efficiency in the Public Sector, 2nd Edition, we attempt to provide a roadmap describing a simple approach for improving processes using teams. This book is ideal for process improvement initiatives, academic institutions, organizational change practitioners, public entities, and administrators and leaders seeking a practical approach for the promotion and implementation of organizational effectiveness. Throughout this handbook, the term process refers to a series of steps that create a product or service. Processes are different from projects. Projects have a beginning and an end. Processes are ongoing, cyclical, and rarely operate in isolation. They connect to or impact many other processes. An approach to improve these processes is the focus of this book. As a public sector leader, you are encouraged, more often than not, to have an external perspective looking outside, looking long term. You are told to keep your eyes on the horizon, spend time figuring out what the public or the customer wants, to pay attention to what other similar organizations are doing, build external partnerships, network, and analyze both the external opportunities and threats. The truth is, however, the leaders and organizations that stand out are those who, contrary to this traditional approach, aggressively look internally, with a balance, more likely, of 80% internal and 20% external, particularly within the public sector.

- Abstract
In the existing reports on national competitiveness and rankings such as IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook and WEF Global Competitiveness Report, there are sizable discrepancies in the ranking order for the same countries. As a result, the reader is often confused because such an outcome creates difficulties for government officials when translating these findings into real-world policies. These discrepancies are actually due to the differences in logic and analytical models used by IMD and WEF. Therefore, in recognizing the problems and limitations of these models, this book presents the IPS model as a new approach. As an extension of Michael Porter's diamond model, it demonstrates a robust set of methodologies as well as offers a number of key policy implications for countries around the world that wish to enhance their national competitiveness. The analytical tools used in this book can be further utilized for other units of analysis such as industries and firms. As this book provides a series of sophisticated methodologies and specific guidelines for enhancing national competitiveness, both academics and practitioners can derive useful implications from this research.Alongside the theoretical frameworks and methodologies for national competitiveness presented in this book, the special theme and focus of this third volume is the fourth industrial revolution and the emerging technologies that are relevant to corporate and national competitiveness. The discussion on the digitalization of business began as early as the 1990s, but emerging technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing have only been a recent trend. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of emerging technologies by both firms and countries. Yet, despite the growing importance of emerging technologies, firms and governments seem to be lagging in effectively integrating them into their operations. To address these challenges, this book explains how emerging technologies have affected firms, industries, and countries. It also welcomes discussion on how firms and countries are responding to the changing environment to enhance their competitiveness through these new technologies.

- Abstract
How the creation of a new banking infrastructure in the early twentieth century established the United States as a global financial powerThe dominance of US multinational businesses today can seem at first like an inevitable byproduct of the nation's superpower status. In Dollars and Dominion, Mary Bridges tells a different origin story. She explores the ramshackle beginnings of US financial power overseas, showing that US bankers in the early twentieth century depended on the US government, European know-how, and last-minute improvisation to sustain their work abroad. Bridges focuses on an underappreciated piece of the nation's financial infrastructure—the overseas branch bank—as a brick-and-mortar foundation for expanding US commercial influence.Bridges explores how bankers sorted their new communities into “us”—potential clients—and “them”—local populations, who often existed on the periphery of the banking world. She argues that US bankers mapped their new communities by creating foreign credit information—and by using a financial asset newly enabled by the Federal Reserve System, the bankers'acceptance, in the process. In doing so, they constructed a new architecture of US trade finance that relied on long-standing inequalities and hierarchies of privilege. Thus, racialized, class-based, and gendered ideas became baked into the financial infrastructure.Contrary to conventional wisdom, there was nothing inevitable or natural about the rise of US finance capitalism. Bridges shows that US foreign banking was a bootstrapped project that began as a side hustle of Gilded Age tycoons and sustained itself by relying on the power of the US state, copying the example of British foreign bankers, and building alliances with local elites. In this way, US bankers constructed a flexible and durable new infrastructure to support the nation's growing global power.

- Abstract
Examining economic growth through the lens of poverty, social exclusion, and economic inequality, Harold Delfin Angulo Bustinza offers an econometric analysis of the effects of international trade between Peru and China, which has seen an average annual growth of 22% over the past two decades. China thus plays a key role in Peru's economic growth, whether in imports of primary goods, exports of capital and consumer goods, or direct investment. However, income and wealth inequality in Peru have not improved over the years. Even so, it has been found that growth in international trade between the two countries has the potential to positively benefit Peru's inclusive economic growth. With global development still on the rise, it is pivotal for us to ensure that all actors of society can benefit from that development, and not just the most privileged. Advocating for the importance of promoting openness in trade, International Trade and Inclusive Economic Growth highlights China and Peru's unique relationship to prioritize fair and equitable growth for all.

- Abstract
Following the recent change in regime, Afghanistan is at a crossroads. Key to its stability is economic growth and international trade, yet many obstacles stand in its way. In Policy Solutions for Economic Growth in a Developing Country, author Nassir Ul Haq Wani outlines these challenges and offers clear policy solutions that will put the country on a path to revive, regenerate, and revitalize its economy. Further, he contextualizes Afghanistan within the region, giving greater insight into the needs of other developing countries. This in-depth study analyses the trading platform at national, international and regional levels for initiating a consistent and sustainable set of policies to promote exports. Alongside macroeconomic stability, this study argues that private sector development, technological progress, socio-economic balance, trade liberalization and a reinvigoration of exports can play an effective role in wealth creation for Afghanistan. Perspectives on Afghanistan's Trade and Development offers a rich and varied policy analysis for those who wish to design a policy to bolster exports from Afghanistan, and for academicians, researchers and students who wish to gain greater insight into this developing economy.

- Abstract
Despite the growing consensus that the rise of China is transforming international relations, policy makers and scholars have not sufficiently addressed the geopolitical and geoeconomic implications of a new paradigm, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukrainian war. This book fills this gap. This is an original and innovative book that investigates how a new modus vivendi between China and the United States in a post-globalized world requires more economic independence because of the distrust between G20 economies but heightened international cooperation, in order to avert a shift to nationalism and protectionism and to fight financial and climate crises. The book is divided into four parts. Part I investigates the specific features of Chinese and U.S. capitalisms; Part II argues that several flaws observed in the multilateral architecture since the early 2000s have caused global imbalances and increased misunderstanding and mistrust between the two superpowers; Part III analyzes how the China-U.S. rivalry has manifested in Asia, Latin America, and in terms of global development finance and finally, Part IV provides a blueprint for a successful and revamped international order. The book provides an ambitious interdisciplinary analysis of the future of multilateralism and globalization with contributions from economists, lawyers, and political scientists.Due to its multidisciplinary approach, the book will attract the interest of scholars and postgraduate students from wide ranging fields, as well as practitioners working in international organizations, policy makers and more generally educated lay readers interested in the topic.

- Abstract
«The Boom & the Boom, like China Miéville's The City and the City, presents a puzzle involving two parallel worlds. It builds a bridge for both worlds, forms mutually stimulating mirror images for both cultures, and creates a beautiful structure of discursive exploration of the multiplicity of contemporary science fiction beyond national boundaries.» (Mingwei Song, author of Fear of Seeing: A Poetics of Chinese Science Fiction (2023), SFRA Book Award Winner) «Twenty-five years ago, many of us thought we were in a period of growth: the British SF Boom. Lyu's very readable book locates this radical sf in its political and economic contexts, but his genius is to discuss a parallel event: the Chinese SF Boom. This is a brilliant exploration of the genre outside the Gernsback-Campbell Continuum of American SF.» (Andrew M. Butler, Managing Editor, Extrapolation) «This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking analysis of two sf booms, one in Britain, one in China, which until now seemed invisible to each other. LYU Guangzhao's carefully paired readings of key novels show that sf is a global phenomenon but that, like economic globalisation itself, it takes distinctive local forms. Let a hundred schools of thought contend and a hundred science fictions boom!» (Mark Bould, Professor of Film and Literature, UWE Bristol) The Boom & The Boom provides a comparative study of the recent science fiction renaissances in the UK and China, known as the British and Chinese SF Booms, which emerged in the late 1980s. It contextualizes the two booms within the transformative political and cultural histories of both countries, characterized by the politico-economic shifts initiated by Margaret Thatcher and Deng Xiaoping. In an era marked by the state's retreat from society and the redefinition of social subjects through market competition, science fiction assumes a crucial counter position for cultural critique, envisioning alternatives and possibilities embodied in utopian hopes.

- Abstract
A unique illustrated exploration of the development of finance that combines data from every part of the world and covers five thousand years of history From the emergence of money in the ancient world to today's interconnected landscape of high-frequency trading and cryptocurrency, the story of finance has always taken place on an international stage. Finance is one of the most globalized and networked of human activities, and one of the most important social technologies ever invented. This volume, the first visually based book dedicated to finance, uses graphics and maps to bring the complex and abstract world of finance down to earth, showing how geography is fundamental for understanding finance, and vice versa. It illuminates the people—including Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes—who have shaped our thinking about global finance; brings to life the ways that place-specific histories, laws, regulations, and institutions influence finance; shows how finance relates to innovation, globalization, and environmental change; and details how finance plays a key part in drawing the landscape of uneven development, inequality, and instability. The Atlas of Finance, with word and image, will change the way you view both your money and your world.

- Abstract
This book provides a unique combination of history, politics, and economics to rationalize the progression of underdevelopment in Sierra Leone, and the challenges of economic growth and development confronting some Sub-Saharan African countries. It concisely presents the internal frictions that are most responsible for the underdevelopment of Sierra Leonean since 1961, while also benchmarking the performance of the country with some countries in the subregion, Europe, the US, Latin America, and Asia. It highlights the external threats that are highly capable of stifling the economic growth and sustainable development of the country, including sovereign debt, the paucity of human capital, the use of natural resources, and external shocks. The central concepts of analysis include the premise for underdevelopment, contexts for business strategies and rivalry in an underdeveloped economy, economic growth, productivity, sustainable development, international trade, and threats to macroeconomic stability in the form of volatile commodity prices, loss of competitiveness, inaccessible foreign markets, deficient healthcare infrastructure, the cost of unsustainable sovereign debt, and the viability of long-term investments. The book has been intentionally developed for all those who are strongly interested in the political economy of Sub-Saharan Africa (with particular emphasis on Sierra Leone), empirical work on economic growth and development, academic instruction on international political economy, international organizations, and policymakers.

Mara Kardas-Nelson and Mara Kardas-Nelson
- Abstract
A deeply reported work of journalism that explores the promises and perils of global microfinance, told through the eyes of those who work in small-scale lending and of women borrowers in Sierra Leone, West Africa. There's a famous story about how microfinance started. In the mid-1970s, Muhammad Yunus, an American-trained Bangladeshi economist, met a poor female stoolmaker who needed money to expand her business. Yunus lent $27 to 42 women, hoping small credit would help them to pull themselves out of poverty. Soon, Yunus's Grameen Bank was born, and very small but often high-interest loans for poor people took off. In 2006, Yunus and the Grameen Bank won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work on anti-poverty lending. But there's a problem with this story. There are mounting concerns that these small loans are as likely to bury poor people in debt as they are to pull them from poverty, with borrowers facing consequences such as jail time and forced land sales. Hundreds have even reportedly committed suicide. What happened? Did microfinance take a wrong turn, or was microfinance flawed from the beginning? We Are Not Able to Live in the Sky is a story about unintended consequences, blind optimism, and the decades-long ramifications of seemingly small policy choices, rooted in the stories of women borrowers in Sierra Leone. Maras Kardas-Nelson asks: What happens when a single, financially focused solution to global inequity ignores the real drivers of poverty? Who stands to benefit and, more importantly, who gets left behind?

- Abstract
In 2019, African heads of state and governments launched in fanfare the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), a historic agreement for economic transformation across the continent. But now comes the hard bit: how to make the agreement a success? In this book, senior experts from across the world come together to provide a comprehensive analysis of the conditions needed for AfCFTA to successfully spur economic development in Africa. It puts forward three foundations for success: demography dividend, digital economy, and economic diversification. In addition to trade policy, the book recommends that African policymakers should strengthen fiscal and monetary policy coordination, adopt and implement the appropriate regulatory environment, and build suitable connectivity infrastructure. The stakes are high. If implemented correctly, the book argues that AfCFTA could speed up trade within Africa, which could double every five years. Success would mean growth, investment, changing trade patterns, jobs, economic transformation, poverty reduction, and a continental market for services.Driven by concrete, evidence-based strategies for long-term growth, this book is an essential read for policy makers, development practitioners, economics researchers, and everyone with an interest in the future of Africa.

- Abstract
Intra-industry trade (IIT) has emerged as a major area of research in the analysis of international and intra-regional specialization. This book highlights the changes which the Indian economy has witnessed in the past two decades following the economic liberalization of the 1990s. It has been revealed that there are comparatively few studies in the context of developing economies which focus on the country-industry-specific determinants of aggregate and sectoral IIT. The book incorporates several hypotheses to analyze demand-driven, supply-induced, industry-specific, and policy-oriented drivers influencing the level of bilateral aggregate and sectoral IIT in the Indian context. Moreover, several trade-related, labor specific and trade overlap induced factors dictate the growth trajectory and the employment level of an economy. Therefore, the current research conducts an empirical analysis to examine each hypothesis and provide significant findings to explore the relationship between key economic variables, their interaction effects, and their impact on the growth of the Indian economy.

- Abstract
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a driving force of the global economy, contributing up to 50% of gross domestic product in some instances. They also contribute to economic development through various channels such as employment creation, economic growth and poverty reduction, key elements of the Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, in many economies the majority of jobs are provided by SMEs. However, despite their support of the economy, SMEs are prone to several binding constraints, such as access to finance and market entry, as well as exogenous shocks and crises, most recently the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on evidence from international experience, SMEs and Economic Development in Africa provides grounded solutions to challenges affecting SMEs, particularly in Africa, and offers guidance on how to build resilience to counteract future shocks. It also offers a number of policy measures which governments in developing countries may need to consider in order to encourage economic growth and development, such as increasing productive capacities, training, enhancing business ethics and professionalism and improving competitiveness. What makes this book distinctive is that fact that it brings together the literature concerning SMEs in one place, and using case studies, it showcases how policymakers can overcome the challenges affecting SMEs. The book also provides tested and practical remedies for African economies with a view to making SMEs a springboard for economic prosperity. The book will appeal to advanced students, scholars and researchers, as well as policymakers, development agencies and non-governmental organisations.

- Abstract
This insightful book investigates the evolution of the European and global economy from the 1950s to the present day, focusing on the role of the EU in a new global environment where economy and security intersect.Multiple crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation and international conflict have damaged the global economy, highlighting deep structural flaws and setting in motion the ongoing process of fragmentation. Sovereign Europe investigates this phenomenon by summarising the history of Europe's international economic role, before outlining the economic opportunities now available to Europe as a result of simultaneous environmental and digital transitions. Authors Paolo Guerrieri and Pier Carlo Padoan assess Europe's position in the new world order, exploring its rivalry with China and relations with the Global South, arguing that in order for Europe to foster a stronger position in the global economy, it needs far more resources and policy tools than are at its current disposal.Recognising the challenges economic sovereignty and strategic autonomy present, this book which follows an international political economy approach, is an illuminating read for students and scholars of economics, international relations, and European politics and integration. It is also of interest to practitioners and policymakers working in both national and international politics.

- Abstract
This book argues that a resilient region should act reactively and proactively in the face of shocks and disruptions and asserts that the institutionalization of regional cooperation may be the answer to development challenges in times of uncertainty and instability. It considers regional, transregional, and subregional cooperation initiatives for building regional resilience and critically examines a broad spectrum of issues, such as international security and trade, economic development, value chains in production, and social welfare. Adopting the concept of resilience allows for a holistic, dynamic, and systematic approach to the studies on the regional process of institutionalization, responsiveness, and adaptability to challenging circumstances. The economic and social indicators of the countries in the region are examined alongside an analysis of the regional institutional architecture. The reader is acquainted with the essence of resilience concerning each category of challenges and the mechanisms of its achievement and strengthening through regional integration. The interdisciplinary character of the book makes it suitable for usage not only by economists but also by lawyers. - Abstract
The oft-used phrase ‘Money makes the world go round'not only highlights the purely economic nature of money but also underscores its significant implications for politics, society, and humanity. It is, therefore, unsurprising that the subject of money is also addressed in religious doctrines. This book aims to present the Catholic Church's official stance on money, as articulated in the papal social encyclicals. The popes are less concerned with monetary theories or abstract considerations about money, but rather with its use and the resulting consequences for both the community and the individual. Social encyclicals serve as a critical lens to analyze the role of money in contemporary society. Money, in itself, is neither inherently good nor bad; it must assume the status of a means and cannot function as an end in itself.

With incomparable wisdom, writing and analytical skills, and wit, world renowned economist E. Ray Canterbery traces the history of the major speculative episodes in the world economy over the last three centuries. He begins with Tulipmania and ends with bitcoin speculation in exposing the way in which normally sane people display reckless abandon in the pursuit of profit. Canterbery shows how our notoriously short financial memory is what creates the conditions for market collapse. Throughout, the market is considered sacrosanct, much to the regret of the losers. By recognizing certain signs and understanding what causes them we can guard against future collapses and have a better hold on the country's (and our own) financial destiny.
