This book constitutes the proceedings of the 17th International Conference and Workshops on Algorithms and Computation, WALCOM 2023, which took place in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in March 2023. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third EAI International Conference on Smart Grid and Internet of Things, SGIoT 2019, held in TaiChung, Taiwan, in November 2019. The 10 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 22 submissions and present results on how to achieve more efficient use of resources based largely on the IoT-based machine-to-machine (M2M) interactions of millions of smart meters and sensors in the smart grid specific communication networks such as home area networks, building area networks, and neighborhood area networks. The smart grid also encompasses IoT technologies, which monitor transmission lines, manage substations, integrate renewable energy generation. Through these technologies, the authorities can smartly identify outage problems, and intelligently schedule the power generation and delivery to the customers. Furthermore, the smart grid should teach us a valuable lesson that security must be designed in from the startof any IoT deployment.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on IoT as a service, IoTaaS 2017, held in Taichung, Taiwan, in September 2017. The 46 full papers were carefully selected from 65 submissions. The papers deal with the “Everything as a Service” deployment paradigm which enables the easy adoption of IoT based services and applications by end-users, and forces providers of smart objects and middleware platforms to architect their solutions accordingly. The three special sessions organized were Wearable Technology and Applications (WTAA), Building Smart Machine Applications (BSMA), and Security and Privacy in Internet of Things, Services and People (SP-IoTSP). The WTAA special session aimed to address the challenges of maintaining high efficiency of WTAA in terms of high recognition rate, energy consumption, computational costs and so forth. The BSMA special session aimed to explore how to construct smart machines architecture for the industryunder the background of IoT and big data. The SP-IoTSP special session aimed to investigate recent research and future directions for IoTSP security and privacy.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Brain Inspired Cognitive Systems, BICS 2016, held in Beijing, China, in November 2016. The 32 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 43 submissions. They discuss the emerging areas and challenges, present the state of the art of brain-inspired cognitive systems research and applications in diverse fields by covering many topics in brain inspired cognitive systems related research including biologically inspired systems, cognitive neuroscience, models consciousness, and neural computation.
