This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 35th International Workshop on Combinatorial Algorithms, IWOCA 2024, held in Ischia, Italy, during July 1–3, 2024. The 40 full papers included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 110 submissions. The IWOCA conference series has provided an annual forum for researchers who design algorithms to address the myriad combinatorial problems underlying computer applications in science, engineering, and business.

Representation learning in heterogeneous graphs (HG) is intended to provide a meaningful vector representation for each node so as to facilitate downstream applications such as link prediction, personalized recommendation, node classification, etc. This task, however, is challenging not only because of the need to incorporate heterogeneous structural (graph) information consisting of multiple types of node and edge, but also the need to consider heterogeneous attributes or types of content (e.g. text or image) associated with each node. Although considerable advances have been made in homogeneous (and heterogeneous) graph embedding, attributed graph embedding and graph neural networks, few are capable of simultaneously and effectively taking into account heterogeneous structural (graph) information as well as the heterogeneous content information of each node.In this book, we provide a comprehensive survey of current developments in HG representation learning.More importantly, we present the state-of-the-art in this field, including theoretical models and real applications that have been showcased at the top conferences and journals, such as TKDE, KDD, WWW, IJCAI and AAAI. The book has two major objectives: (1) to provide researchers with an understanding of the fundamental issues and a good point of departure for working in this rapidly expanding field, and (2) to present the latest research on applying heterogeneous graphs to model real systems and learning structural features of interaction systems. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first book to summarize the latest developments and present cutting-edge research on heterogeneous graph representation learning. To gain the most from it, readers should have a basic grasp of computer science, data mining and machine learning.

This volume in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series contains the papers presented at the S+SSPR 2010 Workshops, which was the seventh occasion that SPR and SSPR workshops have been held jointly. S+SSPR 2010 was organized by TC1 and TC2, Technical Committees of the International Association for Pattern Recognition(IAPR), andheld inCesme, Izmir, whichis a seaside resort on the Aegean coast of Turkey. The conference took place during August 18–20, 2010, only a few days before the 20th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR) which was held in Istanbul. The aim of the series of workshops is to create an international forum for the presentation of the latest results and exchange of ideas between researchers in the?elds of statistical and structural pattern recognition. SPR 2010 and SSPR 2010 received a total of 99 paper submissions from many di?erent countries around the world, giving it a truly international perspective, as has been the case for previous S+SSPR workshops. This volume contains 70 accepted papers, 39 for oral and 31 for poster presentation. In addition to par- lel oral sessions for SPR and SSPR, there were two joint oral sessions of interest to both SPR and SSPR communities. Furthermore, to enhance the workshop experience, there were two joint panel sessions on “Structural Learning” and “Clustering,” in which short author presentations were followed by discussion. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the joint conference on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases: ECML PKDD 2009, held in Bled, Slovenia, in September 2009. The 106 papers presented in two volumes, together with 5 invited talks, were carefully reviewed and selected from 422 paper submissions. In addition to the regular papers the volume contains 14 abstracts of papers appearing in full version in the Machine Learning Journal and the Knowledge Discovery and Databases Journal of Springer. The conference intends to provide an international forum for the discussion of the latest high quality research results in all areas related to machine learning and knowledge discovery in databases. The topics addressed are application of machine learning and data mining methods to real-world problems, particularly exploratory research that describes novel learning and mining tasks and applications requiring non-standard techniques.

The 16th International Symposium on Graph Drawing (GD 2008) was held in Hersonissos, near Heraklion, Crete, Greece, September 21-24, 2008, and was attended by 91 participants from 19 countries. In response to the call for papers the Program Committee received 83 s- missions,eachdescribing originalresearchand/or a systemdemonstration.Each submissionwasreviewedbyatleastthreeProgramCommitteemembersandthe reviewer's comments were returned to the authors. Following extensive disc- sions, the committee accepted 31 long papers and 8 short papers. In addition, 10 posters were accepted and displayed at the conference site. Each poster was granted a two-page description in the conference proceedings. Two invited speakers, Jesper Tegn´ er from Karolinska Institute (Monday) and Roberto Tamassia from Brown University (Tuesday), gave fascinating talks during the conference. Professor Tegn´ er focused on the challenges and oppor- nities posed by the discovery, analysis, and interpretation of biological networks to information visualization, while Prof. Tamassia showed how graph drawing techniques can be used as an e?ective tool in computer security and pointed to future research directions in this area. Following what is now a tradition, the 15th Annual Graph Drawing Contest was held during the conference, also including a Graph Drawing Challenge to the conference attendees. A report is included in the conference proceedings.

This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the Third Inter- tional Conference on Rough Sets and Knowledge Technology (RSKT 2008) held in Chengdu, P. R. China, May 16–19, 2008. The RSKT conferences were initiated in 2006 in Chongqing, P. R. China. RSKT 2007 was held in Toronto, Canada, together with RSFDGrC 2007, as JRS 2007. The RSKT conferences aim to present state-of-the-art scienti?c - sults, encourage academic and industrial interaction, and promote collaborative research in rough sets and knowledge technology worldwide. This was achieved by including in the conference program sessions on rough and soft computing, rough mereology with app- cations, dominance-based rough set approach, fuzzy-rough hybridization, gr- ular computing, logical and mathematical foundations, formal concept analysis, data mining, machine learning, intelligent information processing, bioinform- ics and cognitive informatics, Web intelligence, pattern recognition, and real-life applications of knowledge technology. The 13th Annual International Computing and Com- natorics Conference (COCOON 2007) was held in Ban?, Alberta during July 16–19, 2007. This was the?rst time that COCOON was held in Canada. We received 165 submissions, among which 11 were withdrawn for various reasons. The remaining 154 submissions under full consideration came from 33 countries and regions: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, R- sia, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, the UK, the USA, and the US minor outlying islands. The 33 revised full papers and 5 revised short papers presented together with 2 invited talks, 1 system demo, 2 poster papers address all current aspects in graph drawing, ranging from foundational and methodological issues to applications for various classes of graphs in a variety of fields.

The 32nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming (ICALP 2005) was held in Lisbon, Portugal from July 11 to July 15, 2005. These proceedings contain all contributed papers presented at ICALP 2005, - getherwiththepapersbytheinvitedspeakersGiuseppeCastagna(ENS),Leonid Libkin (Toronto), John C. Mitchell (Stanford), Burkhard Monien (Paderborn), and Leslie Valiant (Harvard). The program had an additional invited lecture by Adi Shamir (Weizmann Institute) which does not appear in these proceedings. ICALP is a series of annual conferences of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS). The?rst ICALP took place in 1972. This year, the ICALP program consisted of the established track A (focusing on algorithms, automata, complexity and games) and track B (focusing on logic, semantics and theory of programming), and innovated on the structure of its traditional scienti?c program with the inauguration of a new track C (focusing on security and cryptography foundation). In response to a call for papers, the Program Committee received 407 s- missions, 258 for track A, 75 for track B and 74 for track C. This is the highest number of submitted papers in the history of the ICALP conferences. The P- gram Committees selected 113 papers for inclusion in the scienti?c program. In particular, the Program Committee for track A selected 65 papers, the P- gram Committee for track B selected 24 papers, and the Program Committee for track C selected 24 papers. All the work of the Program Committees was done electronically.

DEXA 2004, the 15th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, was held August 30? September 3, 2004, at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. The quickly growing spectrum of database applications has led to the establisment of more specialized discussion platforms (DaWaK Conference, EC-Web Conference, EGOVConference, Trustbus Conference and DEXA Workshop: Every DEXA event has its own conference proceedings), which were held in parallel with the DEXA Conference also in Zaragoza. In your hands are the results of much effort. The work begins with the preparation of the submitted papers, which then go through the reviewing process. The accepted papers are revised to final versions by their authors and are then arranged within the conference program. All culminates in the conference itself. For this conference 304 papers were submitted, and I want to thank to all who contributed to it; they are the real base of the conference. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether 942 referee reports, in average 3,1 reports per paper, and selected 92 papers for presentation.
