1 INTRODUCTION These proceedings are the result of a conference on Automating Systems Development held at Leicester Polytechnic, England on 14 to 16 April 1987. The conference was attended by over 170 delegates from industry and academia and it represents a comprehensive review of the state of the art of the use of the computer based tools for the analysis, design and construction of Information Systems (IS). Two parallel streams ran throughout the conference. The academic, or research, papers were the fruit of British, European and Canadian research, with some of the papers reflecting UK Government funded Alvey or European ESPRIT research projects. Two important touchstones guided the selection of academic papers. Firstly, they should be primarily concerned with system, rather than program, development. Secondly, they should be easily accessible to delegates and readers. We felt that formal mathematical papers had plenty of other opportunities for airing and publication. The second stream was the applied programme; a set of formal presentations given by leading software vendors and consultancies. It is clear that many advances in systems development are actually applied, rather than re­ search led. Thus it was important for delegates to hear how leading edge companies view the State of the Art. This was supported by a small exhibi­ tion area where certain vendors demonstrated the software they had intro­ duced in the formal presentation.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems, TACAS 2012, held as part of the joint European Conference on Theory and Practice of Software, ETAPS 2012, which took place in Tallinn, Estonia, in March/April 2012. The 25 research papers, 2 case study papers, 3 regular tool papers, and 6 tool demonstrations papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 147 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections named: SAT and SMT based methods; automata; model checking; case studies; memory models and termination; internet protocol verification; stochastic model checking; synthesis; provers and analysis techniques; tool demonstrations; and competition on software verification.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology, DERIST 2012, held in Las Vegas, NV, USA, in May 2012. The 24 revised full papers presented together with 7 revised short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 44 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on DSRIS in practice, DSRIS methodologies and techniques, social and environmental aspects of DSRIS, theory and theory building in DSRIS, and evaluation of DSRIS projects.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Service-Oriented Perspectives in Design Science Research, DERIST 2011, held in Milwaukee, WI, USA, in May 2011. The 29 revised full papers presented together with 5 revised short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 50 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on design theory, design science research strategies, design methods and techniques, design evaluation, design guidelines, service-oriented perspectives in design science, process design, neuroscience in design research, and designing for social media.

After over a century of research, we still do not understand the principle by which a stimulus, such as an odour or a sound, is represented by distributed neural ensembles within the brain; by which an individual is developed by the control of gene networks. While past studies have made detailed analysis of response profiles of single cells and the properties of a single gene in isolation, such techniques and approaches cannot easily address holistic issues of how large ensembles of neurons and genes can integrate information both spatially and temporally. There is little doubt that much of the info processing power of the brain or a gene network resides in the activities of co-operating and competing networks of neurons and genes and that if we unlock the principles whereby info is encoded and processed within these networks as a whole, rather than within single neurones or genes in isolation, we may be able to understand how the brain or gene network works. Our book will contribute to the development of such a study.
