Arising from new research of members of the International Successful School Principalship Project, this book presents cases of school and leadership success from across 12 countries. It provides critically informed writing, informed by ecological systems theory, which questions the uncritical application of single lens, adjectival leadership models, challenges critical theorists'views of teachers'and leaders'as necessarily compliant with so-called neoliberal policy agendas. In their place, the chapters provide compelling evidence not only of who successful leaders are and what they do, but how they do it as they meet and manage the challenges of building and sustaining success in uncertain times in a range of cultures and social contexts. In these schools, principals assert their broad educational values, professional identities, agency and resilience, drawing upon a range of strategies, technical and human relating qualities and skills in building and sustaining success for all. Whilst they acknowledge the influence of cultural, policy, and community contexts, they are not oppressed by these. This book provides a narrative account of the experiences of twenty former scholarship students from historically disadvantaged communities who attended elite public and private secondary schools. It draws on in-depth, one-on-one semi-structured interviews conducted with former scholarship recipients who were between the ages of 19 and 24 years at the time of the interviews. Various themes are explored, specifically focusing on elite schooling in relation to the experiences and navigational practices of the scholarship recipients and the adjustments that they felt they needed to make in order to fit into the elite school space.The book analyses and discusses the reflective experiences of students who were awarded a scholarship to attend an elite secondary school. It reveals that accepting the gift of a scholarship is far more complex, multi-layered, and at times harsh and even painful for the individual recipients than is possibly realized by those involved in thispractice. This book contributes to academic educational debates within the sociology of education, elite schools and schooling in the post-apartheid South African context.

This open access book outlines key terms of China's school leadership in Chinese political and legal, financial, administrative, and cultural contexts. It reveals and interprets the real meaning of these practical terms based on existing laws, government documents, school policy texts as well as the latest empirical findings from school leaders and teachers'surveys and interviews in China. Jennifer Buchna untersucht in dieser qualitativen Längsschnittstudie, wie pädagogische Fachkräfte einer Grundschule Migration im Kontext ihrer Organisation und umgekehrt ihre Organisation im Kontext Migration konstituieren und welche Rolle die migrationsspezifischen institutionellen Anforderungen an Schule darin einnehmen. Im Ergebnis lässt sich ein zwischen den Fachkräften (Schulleitung, Lehrkräfte und weiteres pädagogisch tätiges Personal) geteiltes und zeitlich überdauerndes Wissen innerhalb der Organisation rekonstruieren, was unter dem Begriff der organisationalen Deutungsmuster konzeptualisiert wird. Jene Deutungsmuster sind maßgeblich von einem rassistischen Wissen geprägt und verweisen demnach auf einen organisationalen Rassismus als konstitutives Moment der Praxis des Organisierens.

Die Beiträge in diesem Sammelband von Autorinnen und Autoren aus der Schweiz, Österreich, Deutschland und den Niederlanden beschäftigen sich mit der Rolle der Technischen Bildung in Fächerverbünden aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln. Im Rahmen einer grundlegenden Reflexion und Problematisierung von Wirksamkeit in pädagogischen Kontexten wird am Gegenstand der Schulinspektion diskursanalytisch erforscht, in welchen Formen und Formaten das Wirksamkeitsversprechen entlang eines polyphonen Zusammenspiels aus Wissenschaft, Schulpraxis und Bildungspolitik Gestalt annimmt und welche Effekte auf die Konstitution schulischer Wirklichkeit und Akteurschaft mit ihm einhergehen.

Regionalisierung zählt zu den bildungspolitischen Vorzeigeprojekten in Deutschland. Sebastian Niedlich identifiziert und systematisiert verschiedene Formen von Regionalisierung und zeigt Entwicklungstrends auf. This book explores the development of educational leadership within difficult contexts via the lens of a previously failing English secondary school in an area of urban poverty. Based on extensive interview data from 2012-2016, the authors demonstrate that the fundamental ethos underpinning the school's improvement is a desire to meet the needs of young people in disadvantaged communities in order to equip them with the skills to allow them to transcend their situation. The authors posit that this school embodies the ‘comprehensive ideal'of secondary education in England: that education should not be disadvantaged by background, and that the state should provide free and high quality education for all. This book provides tools to help pre-service teachers and teacher-preparation programs identify, evaluate, and respond to misaligned expectations early in the teacher-preparation sequence. Plato tells the story of prisoners who mistake the shadows on the wall of their cave for flesh-and-blood reality. These “shadow narratives” dominated their expectations, and when confronted with a three-dimensional reality that bore little resemblance to the shadows, the prisoners were blinded by the light. Surrounded by images and rhetoric that reduce the fullness of teaching to flat, two-dimensional representations, today's pre-service teachers tend to develop expectations of teaching that resemble the shadows more than they resemble reality. These misaligned expectations often lead to practice shock: the painful and disillusioning cognitive dissonance that comes about when unsustainable expectations collide with real-world practice. Intended as a proactive manual for mitigating practice shock,this book shines a light on the shadows by giving pre-service teachers the tools to examine, confront, and revise their own misaligned expectations of teaching before they reach the point of crisis.

In diesem Open Access Buch wird in einer rekonstruktiven Vorgehensweise der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern sich an Primarschulen kollektive/divergierende Orientierungen von Förderung und Selektion sowie dahinterliegende Bildungsgerechtigkeitskonzeptionen zeigen. Basierend auf einer sinngenetischen Typologie werden Vorstellungen gelungener Förderung und Selektion theoretischen Gerechtigkeitskonzeptionen gegenübergestellt. Die Analyse der Diskursverläufe zeigt, dass die Organisation eine sinngebende Struktur darstellt, wenn sich die Schulakteure aktiv in der Bearbeitung des Spannungsverhältnisses zwischen Bezugnahme zum Kontext sowie der innerorganisatorischen Ausgestaltung erleben.

Auf der Grundlage von vierzehn Einzelfällen rekonstruiert Hanne Handwerk Sinn- und Bedeutungsstrukturen inklusiver schulischer Praxis an vier Freien Waldorfschulen. Mit der Methode der Sequenzanalyse weist die Autorin Strukturtransformationen und Wandlungsprozesse nach, die neben der Ebene der Heranwachsenden auch die der Lehrenden und der Geschäftsführung erfassen. Anhand der Strukturbedingungen und des pädagogischen Konzepts der Freien Waldorfschulen werden entscheidende Voraussetzungen zur Umsetzung von Inklusion sichtbar gemacht. Aufgrund des mehrdimensionalen Erkenntnisinteresses gewinnen die Rekonstruktionsergebnisse allgemeine Gültigkeit und grundlegende Bedeutung für den erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs.

David Scheer zeigt, dass sich die formal gegebenen Aufgaben der Schulleitung durch den erweiterten pädagogischen Auftrag schulischer Inklusion nicht grundlegend ändern, gleichwohl sich Zeitaufwand und Komplexität von einzelnen Aufgabenbereichen erhöhen. This book provides readers with insights into how Singapore school leaders are actively engaged in the transformation of the Singapore education system. It brings to attention crucial elucidations of the increasing demand and complexity placed on school leaders through the use of case studies. Each chapter in the book focuses on a particular issue which has become important or has gained renewed importance in the Singapore education system. The chapters first provide a background to the theme under examination and a theoretical basis for discussion. They then narrate the case that shows how school leaders interpret and implement policy initiatives in their respective schools or lead change in that area. The case studies span over a wide range of domains such as instructional leadership, assessment leadership, stakeholder engagement, professional learning communities, and school branding. The data collected from these case studies came primarily from interviews of educators in theirrespective school contexts, in addition to other sources of data such as artifacts. Each case study highlights descriptions, interpretations, and perspectives across school contexts, which is consistent with the proposition that school leadership is very much shaped by context. At the end of each chapter, there are guiding questions to help readers critically analyse and reflect on the main learning points of the case.

This book explores the perspectives of primary school leaders in Serbia as they attempt to navigate its changing political, social and economic situation. As a post-socialist and post-conflict country, Serbia has moved from a state-ruled and planned economy to market-oriented consumerism and competitiveness. In the midst of a rapidly changing and evolving country, school leaders have found themselves on the front lines of a system where infrastructure and support have not been implemented consistently. The clash between the complexities of Serbia's history and attempts to align education policies to those of the European Union has created unique challenges for primary school leaders: they are expected to be both objects and agents of change in a context where their own political position and relationships with students, parents and the teaching profession at large have been irrevocably altered. By illuminating the perspectives of the leaders themselves, this book emphasises the importance of these actors on the front line of Serbian education: its findings can equally be applied to other post-Communist and post-conflict contexts.

Verschiedene Theorien und Konzepte, die unter der Forschungsperspektive bereits eingesetzt werden, werden beschrieben, diskutiert und auf ihren Erklärungswert hin überprüft.

Thomas Begert untersucht, basierend auf einem netzwerktheoretischen Ansatz, der die Bedeutung der sozialen Einbettung von Individuen in Gruppen für individuelles Verhalten betont, den Klassenzusammenhalt als ein wichtiges strukturelles Merkmal von Schulklassen und dessen Einfluss auf schulisches Problemverhalten. Dadurch werden die in der Literatur vorherrschenden individuums- und lehrpersonenzentrierten Ursachenfelder zu schulischem Problemverhalten um eine peerkontextuelle Sichtweise erweitert. Es zeigt sich, dass schulisches Problemverhalten auch durch soziale Prozesse zwischen den Peers erklärt werden kann. Deshalb wird auf die Beachtung von Klassenzusammenhalt und -normen durch die Lehrpersonen hinsichtlich von Unterrichtsgestaltung verwiesen.

Eine der Aufgaben, der sich Lehrer in ihrem Beruf häufig und intensiv widmen müssen, ist die Zensierung der von Schülern erbrachten Leistungen. In dieser Arbeit sollen Wege zur Verbesserung der Leistungsbeurteilung in der Schule dargestellt werden. Dazu ist es zuerst einmal wichtig, sich darüber klar zu werden, was das angestrebte Ziel ist: Welche Funktionen sollen Leistungsbeurteilungen überhaupt erfüllen? Denn nur wenn man weiß, wo genau man hin möchte, ist es auch möglich, nach Wegen zu suchen, die in diese Richtung führen. Ist das Ziel klar, ist es wichtig, sich darüber klar zu werden, welche Hindernisse zwischen dem jetzigen Zustand und dem Zielzustand liegen: Welche Probleme behindern die Erfüllung der Funktionen von Leistungsbeurteilung? Der letzte Schritt besteht nun daraus, nach Mitteln und Wegen zu suchen, mit denen die Hindernisse, welche die Erreichung des Ziels verhindern, beseitigt oder umgangen werden können. So werden Vorschläge aus der neueren Forschung dargestellt, mit denen die genannten Probleme gelöst werden können (oder schon wurden), bzw. die Leistungsbeurteilung allgemein verbessert werden kann.
