The study illustrates the paradoxical relationship between nationalization and internationalization in the case of Albanian higher education. It demonstrates how global transformational processes and foreign policy have impacted the international dimension of higher education as a nation-building institution. The analysis considers the effect of foreign policy and the interactions between the state, the university, and the cultural elite. The study applies the concept of causal mechanisms as an analytical and narrative device. Foreign policy analysis is framed within an international patronage regime. The international dimension is defined in terms of international exchanges, policy borrowing, and policy discourse. The higher education policy areas it investigates are education policy, governance, academic management, curriculum, and academic mobility. The interdisciplinary analytical and methodological approaches applied here were drawn from the transnational history of education and comparative-historical analysis.

This open access book investigates how representation of Native Americans and Mexican-origin im/migrants takes place in high school history textbooks. Manually analyzing text and images in United States textbooks from the 1950s to 2022, the book documents stories of White victory and domination over Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) groups that disproportionately fill educational curricula. While representation and accurate information of non-White perspectives improves over time, the same limited tropes tend to be recycled from one textbook to the next. Textual analysis is augmented by focus groups and interviews with BIPOC students in California high schools. Together, the data show how misrepresentation and absence of BIPOC perspectives in textbooks impact youth identity. This book argues for an innovative rethinking of US history curricula to consider which stories are told, and which perspectives are represented.

This book examines connections between policy contexts, school experiences and everyday activities of children growing up in the global city of Singapore. In particular, it explores how Singapore children's everyday experiences inside and outside of school shape their orientations towards educational success. Alongside an analysis of school life and educational policies, it also considers children's out-of-school activities, including leisure, homework, and enrichment activities, and connections between these and their school-based activities. The book draws on empirical data from Primary 4 classes in two Singapore schools in the form of student-completed surveys, classroom ethnographies, student responses to a learning dialogues activity, and a re-enactment of one child's out-of-school life, as well as curriculum and policy analysis. It provides readers with an in-depth understanding of Singapore Primary 4 children's experiences inside and outside of school, including the structure of timetables and pedagogical approaches encountered in school lessons, children's enjoyment of activities inside and outside of school, children's engagement and wellbeing at school, and the impact of Singapore's educational policies on children's learning experiences. Moving beyond a simplistic focus on Singapore children's academic performance in international high-stakes testing, the book offers a comprehensive exploration of their lives inside and outside of school. This holistic approach is unique in the Singapore context and contributes to a greater understanding of children's everyday lives in the city.

This book examines the development of British post-Second World War short-term residential adult education, through the lens of the Shropshire Adult Education College (1948-1976) and the tenure of Sir George Trevelyan as its first warden. Trevelyan is acknowledged as the godfather of new-age spiritualism in the UK and is credited with the development of eclectic and esoteric learning opportunities in arts, traditional crafts, culture and ecology. Embodying the spirit of a new national drive for optimism and enterprise in the post-war period, Trevelyan, and his contemporaries at other colleges, took risks and innovated in new pedagogical approaches to adult education, capturing the imagination of hundreds of students, before being stifled by an increasingly restrictive policy framework and financial strictures. Governance als Zustandekommen, Aufrechterhaltung und Transformation sozialer Ordnung in Mehrebenensystemen bedarf analytischer Perspektiven, die neben rationalistischen und formalistischen Ansätzen auch den ordnungsstiftenden Wirkungen kultureller Sinnmuster und präreflexiver Praktiken gerecht werden. Daniel Houben schlägt vor, dazu auf den soziologischen Neoinstitutionalismus und die Theorie Bourdieus zurückzugreifen und arbeitet drei Perspektiven auf ordnungsstiftende Logiken heraus, die je an einem distinkten Beispiel ausgeführt werden: Die habitualisierte Ordnung zeigt, wie Mitglieder einer Organisation ihre professionellen Habitūs mit dem Institutionengefüge jener Organisation synchronisieren oder eben daran scheitern. Anhand des Bologna-Prozesses wird Hochschullehre als eine sich in habitualisierten Routinen vollziehende Praxis illustriert. This book gives an introduction to Jean-François Lyotard (1924–1998) as an educational thinker whose philosophical encounters with politics and art offer a radical reconsideration of the aims of education and the nature of pedagogy. The book approaches Jean-François Lyotard's contributions to educational thought by placing his changing intellectual career within its thematic and pedagogical context. Central chapters deal with Lyotard's key concepts utilised throughout different phases of his intellectual career, providing new openings and perspectives to an affective form of pedagogy that questions the conditions and perimeters of the educational endeavour as a learning and teaching event. Within these discussions, Lyotard's ideas about aesthetics and politics receive close attention. This book explains what Students'Quality Circles (SQC) are, how they function, key constraints and issues in implementation, and possible solutions to make it a valuable co-curricular activity. It showcases how Quality Control Circle (QCC) is reengineered with the sole purpose of prosocial personality development of students at their early age. It is a research outcome which depicts the direction of the education system toward character building rather than only developing knowledge and skills. The logical sequence of presentation of the book is ‘why,'‘what,'and toward the end, ‘how'SQC in education. The book satisfies four hierarchical levels of readers. The first level is of educationists and national policy makers who may take up SQC as an important approach of the education system in their country for prosocial personality development of students and thereby targeting to produce quality citizens in the future. At the second level are chief executives or managers of educationalinstitutes who may identify the potential of SQC approach for developing the positive personality of their students. Teachers and SQC facilitators are at the third level, and they can use the book to train and educate their students while initiating and promoting SQC activities at their institutes. Agenda 2010, Asyl), Demokratieerziehung in Politikunterricht und Orientierungskursen für Einwander•innen, sowie Gemeinwohlerziehung, in der Bürger•innen gemeinnützige Orientierungen (etwa zu Corona) angesonnen werden. Gestützt auf facettenreiche empirische Daten und theoretische Reflexionen diskutiert der Autor auch gesellschaftlichen Funktionen und normative Fragen.

This edited volume presents a systematic analysis of conceptual, methodological and applied aspects related to the validation of educational tests used in Latin American countries. Inspired by international standards on educational measurement and evaluation, this book illustrates efforts that have been made in several countries to validate different types of educational assessments, including student learning assessments, measurements of non-cognitive aspects in students, teacher evaluations, and tests for certification and selection. It gathers the experience of validity studies from the main international assessments in Latin America (PISA, TIMSS, ERCE, and ICCS). Additionally, it shows the challenges that must be taken into account when evaluations are used to compare countries, groups or trends of achievement over time. The book builds on the premise that measurements in the educational field should not be used if there are no studies that support the validity of the interpretation of their scores, or the use made of such tests. It shows that, despite the recognition given to validity, relatively few educational measurement assessments have accumulated enough evidence to support their interpretation and use. In doing so, this volume increases awareness about the relevance of validity, especially when assessments are key component of educational policies.

This open access book compares and contrasts the results of international student assessments in ten countries. The OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) released the results of its 2018 assessment in December 2019. This book reflects the debates that typically follow the release of these results and focuses on the causes of differences between countries. Such causes include continuous decline in one country, improvement combined with increasing internal inequalities in another country, or rapid improvement in spite of an outdated curriculum in yet another.In addition, the book discusses a number of general questions: Is knowledge outdated? Are computers taking over and replacing teachers? Are schools killing creativity? Are we adequately preparing the next generation? Are schools failing to educate our kids? The book starts out with a summary of PISA's evolution and PISA results, and an explanation of the major factors that play a role in changes in countries'results. This book evaluates contemporary approaches to education, with a particular focus on the ways in which assessment shapes the educational experience and influences pupils and students. It adopts a critical approach, arguing that there is a need for students to develop critical thinking skills, be flexible and have the capacity for originality. Education has increasingly come to be seen as a process with qualifications as the output; however, as economies change, attaining advantage increasingly relies on creativity and originality. Unfortunately, in the quest to remove uncertainty from education, creativity and originality are often overlooked; and the result is that education is impoverished. Creasy argues here that there is no single factor that has shaped education and led to this situation; rather, developments within education can be seen as having been shaped by a range of forces such as neoliberalism, New Public Management, standardization and internationalization. This is not toclaim any deliberate undermining of education, but the cumulative effect is that education is less and less fit for purpose.
