Designing Personalized Learning Experiences offers theoretically grounded and pragmatic approaches to designing personalized learning initiatives for higher education and organizational contexts. Lifelong learning assists us in having a successful career, promotes mental health, and helps us to adapt to the constant changes we experience. Rapid changes in our technological and social environment mean that we must learn more and learn faster than ever before. Given the importance of learning, it is essential to understand what we learn and how we learn. These learning elements and the relationships among them can best be understood through a theory of adult learning. The goal of this book is to propose such a theory.In this book, we present what we consider to be a holistic, logical, integrated, and readable summary of what adults learn and how adult learning takes place. Throughout this exposition, we include the contributions of many of the most impactful learning theorists and the latest empirical research on individual learning. We also highlight some of the intellectual debates that are still in progress in this rapidly evolving field.In simple terms, according to the theory, learning begins with an experience. This experience is followed by reflection and dialogue with others. These activities cause individuals to modify or add to what they already know and are cognitively able to do (ie, learning is occurring). While this logic is employed by a number of scholars, the book has a number of features that should make it a widely referenced source on adult learning theory. The book introduces the entire learning framework at the beginning and expands upon it in subsequent chapters. This framework, combined with clear definitions of terms and the use of examples while avoiding obscure language, serves to make the book very readable.

This second volume of Diverse Pedagogical Approaches to Experiential Learning (Palgrave, 2020) contains a new collection of experiential learning (EL) reflections, case studies, and strategies written by twenty-eight authors across sixteen academic disciplines. Like the first volume, the chapters describe the process of developing, implementing, facilitating, expanding, and assessing EL in courses, programs, and centers both locally and globally. This collection of essays by Foxfire practitioners represents the wide range of adaptations by educators of the pedagogical orientation of the Foxfire Magazine and Foxfire Programs for Teachers. Former students in the magazine class at Rabun County High School share the continuing impact of that experience on their lives, including a former student who is pioneering the magazine project with her sixth grade class. An early childhood teacher make a passionate, articulate case for instruction guided by the Foxfire Core Practices. And a former school administrator shares his experiences as guidance to current school administrators in enabling then supporting teachers to implement instruction guided by Foxfire's Core Practices. Participants in Foxfire's Program for Teachers, from early childhood teachers to college professors, describe their adaptations of the Foxfire Approach for instruction at all grade levels, all subjects and all demographics—including how they coped with the challenges they faced. One practitioner describes how she used the Core Practices to design instruction in rural China. We have an engaging essay focused on our summer courses for teachers, based on extensive observations and interview of participants attending those courses. Several essays explore the pedagogical roots of the Foxfire Approach, as well as its value in providing instruction today which engages the students in the content and results in durable learning. Readers can read straight through the book, beginning with a short historical introductory essay, or skip around to topics of interest to assemble an informed assessment of the potential of the Foxfire Approach.

Social and Emotional Learning in Action(SELA) is an easy to use sourcebook facilitated by teaching and/or counseling practitioners primarily in school settings. The pedagogical basis for these lessons are shaped around the research findings of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), indicating that the inclusion of social and emotional development programs positively affect academic achievement. CASEL has identified five interrelated cognitive, affective, and behavioral competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. SELA will be address all five. SELA will provide a developmentally sequenced year-long/ modular flow or stand-alone lessons that integrate the benefits of experiential and social emotional learning (SEL) into the classroom. Each lesson (36 total) will offer step-by-step instructions along with a materials list.

This book addresses issues confronting universities'attempts to integrate practice-based learning in higher education curriculum, yet which reveals the jostling of cultures which exist within and amongst the academy, industry, government and professional bodies and other educational providers. The book engages theory in practices, and draws upon research highlighting the issues and transactions that emerge with implementation of work integrated learning arrangements as uses these resources to discuss and develop further both theoretical premises and procedural contributions. The illustrative cases derive utilise metaphors of culture in their exploration of the epistemologies, structures, politics, histories and rituals which constrain program opportunity and success in making these advances. The volume comprises two main sections, the first laying out focal issues in the integration of learning and work in higher education. This section presents the issues at multiple levels of analysis and in theoretical terms. This section provides a foundation for the second section of the book which introduces a number of research studies illustrative of the issues theorised in the first. The cases highlight the practice of workplace and higher education pedagogy. They provide thick descriptions of experiences of integration and are explicitly focused on the implementation of work integrated programs in higher education. The volume commences with an introductory chapter which sets out the range of issues addressed both theoretically and through illustration in the book and a final chapter critically reviews the contributions and acts to provide a cohesive picture of the learning practices of work and higher education and the possibilities of their integration.

​The concept of mimetic learning at work is outlined and elaborated in this text. That elaboration consists of an account of how securing occupational capacities has been primary associated with learning processes and an explanation of those processes. Much, and probably most, of the learning and development across individuals working lives occurs outside of circumstances of direct guidance or instruction. Yet, recent considerations of individuals'epistemologies and developments form anthropology and cognitive science suggest that current explanations about individuals'contributions to learning at and through work are incomplete. So, there is need for an emphasis on individuals'processes of learning, both within and outside of situations of guidance by more experienced workers, needs to be more fully understood, and accepted as being person dependent. Contributions from anthropology, developmental studies, and cognitive neuroscience now augment those from sociocultural theory.

During the 1990s, the workplace was rediscovered as a rich source of learning. The issue of workplace learning has since received increasing attention from academics and practitioners alike but is still under-researched empirically. This book brings together a range of state-of-the-art research papers addressing interventions to support learning in the workplace. The authors are experienced international scholars who have an interest in making HRD and workplace learning practices more evidence-based through practical relevant research. Although workplace learning is largely an autonomous process, many organizations want to manage it as part of their broader HRD strategy. There are limits, however, to the extent to which the complex dynamics of learning in the workplace can be guided in pre-determined desirable directions. This tension between the possible strengths of workplace learning and the limits of managing it is at the heart of this volume. The book is broken into three sections. Reflection is a technique for aiding and reinforcing learning, used in education and professional development. This volume offers practitioners and students guidance that cuts across theoretical approaches, enabling them to understand and use reflection to enhance learning in practice.

Work-related learning can be broadly seen to be concerned with all forms of education and training closely related to the daily work of (new) employees, and is increasingly playing a central role in the lives of individuals, groups or teams and the agenda's of organizations. However, as this area of study becomes more prominent, debates have opened about the nature of the field, as well as about its configurations and effects. For example, some authors have a broad definition of WRL and define it as learning for work, at work and through work, ranging from formal, through semi-structured to informal learning. Others prefer to use the concept of WRL mainly in connection to informal, incidental learning processes during work, leading to competent workplace learners. Formal and informal learning are distinguished from each other with respect to the level of intention (implicit/non-intentional/incidental versus deliberative/intentional/structured). Another point of discussion originates from the different ‘theoretical backgrounds'of the authors: the ‘learning theorists'versus the ‘organizational theorists'. The first group is mainly interested in the question of how learning comes about; the second group is predominantly interested in the search for factors affecting learning.

For too long, theories and practices of learning have been dominated by the requirements of formal learning. Quite simply this book seeks to persuade readers through philosophical argument and empirically grounded examples that the balance should be shifted back towards the informal. These arguments and examples are taken from informal learning in very diverse situations, such as in leisure activities, as a preparation for and as part of work, and as a means of surviving undesirable circumstances like dead-end jobs and incarceration. Informal learning can be fruitfully thought of as developing the capacity to make context sensitive judgments during ongoing practical involvements of a variety of kinds. Such involvements are necessarily indeterminate and opportunistic. Hence there is a major challenge to policy makers in shifting the balance towards informal learning without destroying the very things that are desirable about informal learning and indeed learning in general. The book has implications therefore for formal learning too and the way that teaching might proceed within formally constituted educational institutions such as schools and colleges.
