This book highlights the importance of individual learner differences in learning English as a foreign language and reports the findings of a study which investigated the impact of two personality traits, which are, openness to experience and ambiguity tolerance, on target language attainment among Polish secondary school students. The book provides an exhaustive overview of the theoretical issues and existing research related to personality, emphasizing the two traits under investigation, openness, and ambiguity tolerance, which are the focus of the empirical study reported later in the book. The empirical investigation explored relationships between openness to experience and ambiguity tolerance, as well as their impact on attainment in learning English as a foreign language. Moreover, it also aimed to shed light on the link between these traits and students'assessments (i.e., self-assessment and school grades). The findings of the study provide a basis for proposing specific profiles of foreign language learners with different levels of openness and ambiguity tolerance.

Dieses Buch untersucht die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Informationsinfrastruktureinheiten (IE) an Hochschulen für Angewandte Wissenschaften (HAW) in Baden-Württemberg im Kontext der Digitalisierung und der COVID-19-Pandemie. Anhand einer neo-institutionalistisch inspirierten, explorativen Studie mit einem vergleichenden Fallstudienansatz wird untersucht, wie sich die hochschulübergreifende und innerhochschulische Zusammenarbeit der IE seit der gesetzlichen Verpflichtung zu mehr Integration aus dem Jahr 2005 verändert haben. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich zwar (mit Ausnahme des Unterfeldes der HAW-Medienzentren bzw. E-Learning-Support-Einheiten) zumindest die Unterfelder der Hochschulrechenzentren und Hochschulbibliotheken stärker konstituiert haben, es aber nach wie vor Hindernisse für eine weitere Intensivierung und insbesondere für eine weitere unterfeldübergreifende Zusammenarbeit gab. Auch die tatsächlich beobachtete Integration im Inneren der Fallhochschulen blieb hinter den Erwartungen zurück und es zeigten sich keine „überlegenen“ institutionellen Lösungen. Somit scheint die gesetzliche Forderung nach mehr innerhochschulischer Integration (zumindest hinsichtlich formal integrierter Organisationsstrukturen) nur bedingt eine zielgerechte Umsetzung erfahren zu haben.

The present study exploratively investigated the role of organizational culture in performance management practices in Kenyan higher education institutions. Specifically, the influence of organizational culture on the purpose and extent to which performance information is used was explored. Qualitative interviews were conducted followed by quantitative surveys, which were filled out by teaching and non-teaching staff in various universities in Kenya. The findings provide evidence of linkages between performance information use, diversity of measure and organizational culture. It has been established that, depending on whether flexibility or control values are dominant in the culture of an institution; performance information is used in varying ways. Institutions where flexibility values were dominant in their organizational cultures used performance information for attention focus, monitoring and decision making to a higher extent than universities where control values were dominant. Institutions where Flexibility values were dominant also showed a more diverse set of performance measures than in those where control values were dominant.

Diese Open-Access-Publikation untersucht studienbezogene Erfahrungen von First-in-Family Studierenden in Österreich und zeigt auf, wie diese ihren studentischen Alltag bewältigen. Formen der Bewältigung und Kriterien des Studienerfolgs sind im Vergleich zu den Herausforderungen und Barrieren, mit denen First-in-Family Studierende konfrontiert sein können, bisher kaum untersucht worden. Mit diesem Buch werden erstmals umfassend jene Lebensbereiche beleuchtet, in die Studierende außerhalb der Universität eingebettet sind und die eine maßgebliche Rolle in Bezug auf deren Studienerfolg spielen. Den theoretischen Rahmen bilden drei Ansätze: (1) die Relationale Theorie Pierre Bourdieus, (2) weiterführende strukturtheoretische Überlegungen sowie (3) das Konzept der Alltäglichen Lebensführung. Das Buch zeigt, wie First-in-Family Studierende ihr Studium wahrnehmen, mit welchen Spannungsdynamiken sie konfrontiert sind und wie sie diese bewältigen. Die Rekonstruktion studienbezogener Erfahrungen von First-in-Family Studierenden und deren Agency sowie Kapitalien stehen im Fokus der Analyse. Des Weiteren wird die Bedeutung einzelner Lebensbereiche in Bezug auf das Studium aufgezeigt und es werden strukturelle Besonderheiten universitärer Institutionen bzw. Studienrichtungen beleuchtet.

In diesem Herausgeberband wird die Diskussion um die Bedeutung der Wiederentdeckung der ästhetischen und kontemplativen Dimension von Bildung, die im angelsächsischen Raum bereits seit einiger Zeit theorie- und forschungsbasiert geführt wird, für die pädagogische Diskussion im deutschsprachigen Raum aufgegriffen und fruchtbar gemacht. Während im deutschsprachigen Raum vermehrt Publikationen zu Schule und Achtsamkeit erscheinen, stellt die bildungstheoretische und forschungsbasierte Auseinandersetzung mit Bildung und Mindfulness derzeit noch ein Desiderat dar, wenngleich sich erziehungswissenschaftliche Stimmen mehren, der Idee der kontemplativen Wende in der Bildung auch im deutschsprachigen Diskurs mehr Beachtung zu schenken. Über dieses Desiderat hinaus macht sich die Publikation zur Aufgabe, die Diskussion zu Bildung und Mindfulness aus einem dezidiert bildungstheoretischen Fokus heraus zu schärfen, was derzeit auch im angelsächsischen Raum noch kaum Beachtung erfährt.

Governance als Zustandekommen, Aufrechterhaltung und Transformation sozialer Ordnung in Mehrebenensystemen bedarf analytischer Perspektiven, die neben rationalistischen und formalistischen Ansätzen auch den ordnungsstiftenden Wirkungen kultureller Sinnmuster und präreflexiver Praktiken gerecht werden. Daniel Houben schlägt vor, dazu auf den soziologischen Neoinstitutionalismus und die Theorie Bourdieus zurückzugreifen und arbeitet drei Perspektiven auf ordnungsstiftende Logiken heraus, die je an einem distinkten Beispiel ausgeführt werden: Die habitualisierte Ordnung zeigt, wie Mitglieder einer Organisation ihre professionellen Habitūs mit dem Institutionengefüge jener Organisation synchronisieren oder eben daran scheitern. Anhand des Bologna-Prozesses wird Hochschullehre als eine sich in habitualisierten Routinen vollziehende Praxis illustriert. Die Perspektive der valorisierten Ordnung fokussiert Legitimitäten oder symbolische Herrschaftsverhältnisse. Am Beispiel der von New Public Management induzierten Verschiebungen in den Wertmaßstäben wissenschaftlicher Forschung und Lehre wird analysiert, wie sich Legitimitäten durch sukzessive Re-Valorisierungen auf mehreren Ebenen in wechselseitiger Abhängigkeit zueinander wandeln. Die Perspektive der positionalen Ordnung fragt nach der relationalen Bedingtheit sozialer Ordnung. Am Beispiel der Hochschulräte deutscher Universitäten werden somit Muster und Logiken ihrer Besetzung offenkundig.

Como profesionales de la educación disponemos de los conocimientos necesarios para afrontar la intervención educativa en todos los escenarios en los que interactúa la persona. Investigamos, estudiamos para conocer mejor al ser humano, para poder orientar a cada individuo en su proceso de autorrealización en un mundo cada vez más incierto. En este proceso obviamos en muchas ocasiones lo esencial de esta tarea: la educación es un encuentro entre personas, de ahí su fragilidad. Fragilidad que no significa que esta tarea sea incierta, o débil, sin una fundamentación clara o un corpus de conocimientos propio. Todo lo contrario. Educar exige un saber teórico y práctico que nos ayuda a comprender qué es educación, cómo llevarla a cabo, dónde, para qué y por qué; lo que nos exige conocer las claves de toda acción educativa que configuran el saber educativo. Y en este proceso, la Teoría de la Educación --como conocimiento científico que explica, describe, predice, sistematiza- aporta a la educación no solo los conocimientos necesarios para explicarla, sino también, e igual de relevante, aporta aquellos conocimientos dirigidos a la mejora de la acción educativa y/o socioeducativa. El objetivo de este libro es contribuir a este conocimiento con la propuesta de temas esenciales para conocerlos, profundizar en ellos, debatirlos y provocar reflexión crítica, sabiendo que no es un saber estático, sino que continúa evolucionando gracias tanto a las contribuciones de otras ciencias, de experiencias innovadoras, de expertos en diferentes áreas, como al contexto siempre dinámico en el que vivimos.

Establishing Child Centred Practice in a Changing World, Part A draws on contributions from around the world, as it highlights the possibilities for a more focused series of studies in this area, deepening the understanding of what informs effective practice with children, through demanding a greater applied awareness of terms such as voice, collaboration and change. It reflects on the realities of the dynamic global context and the way in which this is affecting children's experiences at a national and local level. This book argues that the liberal arts and sciences (LAS) model of education can inspire reform across higher education to help students acquire crucial civic virtues. Based on interviews with 59 students from LAS programmes across Europe, the book posits that LAS education can develop a range of citizenship skills that are central to the democratic process. The interviews provide insight into how studying LAS prepares students for citizenship by asking them to reflect on their education, what it taught them, and how it did so. This book contains a series of unique international contributions that explore risk in partnerships involving education. Trotz massiver Förderungen für die Digitalisierung ist die Präsenzlehre noch immer der Standard an deutschen Hochschulen. Aufgrund des Physical Distancing im Zuge der Corona-Pandemie musste sie jedoch kurzfristig fast vollständig digitalisiert werden. Die Beiträge des Bandes bieten einen multiperspektivischen Zugang zu den damit verbundenen Herausforderungen und beleuchten, wie die verschiedenen Akteur•innen die Umstellung auf digitale Lehr- und Lernformate umgesetzt und erlebt haben. Durch die Zusammenführung der verschiedenen Sichtweisen können die Bedarfe und Wünsche der einzelnen Akteursgruppen zusammengebracht und bei der nachhaltigen Weiterentwicklung der Hochschullehre besser berücksichtigt werden.

Ole Engel untersucht in diesem Open-Access-Buch erstmalig auf der Grundlage einer großen Studie die Bildungs-/Berufsverläufe, die Arbeitssituation, internationale Aktivitäten sowie die gesellschaftliche Teilhabe von Professoren mit Migrationshintergrund. Die empirische Grundlage bildet die MOBIL-Studie der HU Berlin, an der über 200 Professoren mit Migrationshintergrund teilgenommen haben. Die Gruppe kommt primär aus dem europäischen und angelsächsischen Ausland. Bildungs- und Berufsverläufe sind häufig durch Mehrfachmigration geprägt. This book explores disciplinary teaching excellence through a diverse range of student-staff partnership research projects. Despite being a highly contested term, ‘teaching excellence'is something that universities aspire to and are expected to have. However, the editors and contributors argue that not only are definitions of excellence often broad and generic, but they lack nuanced understandings of disciplinary excellence in higher education. This book begins by unpacking some of these contested definitions of teaching excellence, followed by a series of co-authored chapters produced by students and staff who have undertaken research projects where they examine teaching excellence in their respective disciplinary areas. This edited volume presents a systematic analysis of conceptual, methodological and applied aspects related to the validation of educational tests used in Latin American countries. Inspired by international standards on educational measurement and evaluation, this book illustrates efforts that have been made in several countries to validate different types of educational assessments, including student learning assessments, measurements of non-cognitive aspects in students, teacher evaluations, and tests for certification and selection. It gathers the experience of validity studies from the main international assessments in Latin America (PISA, TIMSS, ERCE, and ICCS). Additionally, it shows the challenges that must be taken into account when evaluations are used to compare countries, groups or trends of achievement over time. The book builds on the premise that measurements in the educational field should not be used if there are no studies that support the validity of the interpretation of their scores, or the use made of such tests. It shows that, despite the recognition given to validity, relatively few educational measurement assessments have accumulated enough evidence to support their interpretation and use. In doing so, this volume increases awareness about the relevance of validity, especially when assessments are key component of educational policies.

Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage wurden 13 Interviewsmit Lehrkräften der Fächer Englisch, Erziehungswissenschaft und Informatik geführt.

Der im ersten Studienjahr entwickelte „Studienstil“ bestimmt dominant den weiteren Verlauf eines Studiums. Es ist deshalb unumgänglich, sich um den Studieneingang verstärkt zu bemühen. Diese Studie analysiert, wie sich am Anfang des Studiums die Interessen und Erwartungen der Studierenden entwickeln. Dabei zeigt sich, dass der Studieneingang in den einzelne Fachdisziplinen sehr unterschiedlich ist, dass aber „Bildung durch Wissenschaft“ auch in der Wissenschaftsdidaktik das einende Element sein kann.
