In südafrikanischen Townships ist HIV/AIDS weit verbreitet, für die Jugendlichen vor Ort stellt die Krankheit eine ebenso alltägliche wie tödliche Gefahr dar. Eine zentrale Rolle für den Umgang mit dieser Krankheit und die Aufklärung über sie kommt dabei der Sozialen Arbeit zu. Doch wie kann in der Praxis der Sozialen Arbeit mit der Einstellung der Jugendlichen gegenüber HIV/AIDS umgegangen werden – gerade auch wenn wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu Krankheitsursache und -verlauf angezweifelt werden? Elke Rühle geht den daraus resultierenden Problemen auf den Grund. Basierend auf einer Studie, bei der 650 SchülerInnen in südafrikanischen Townships befragt wurden, wird eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den unterschiedlichen Verständnissen von HIV/AIDS vorgenommen. Indem sie die urteilende zugunsten einer perspektivischen Position umgeht und die Praxis ins Zentrum ihrer Betrachtungen rückt, gewinnt Rühle wichtige Impulse für die Präventionsarbeit.

The AIDS Law Project (ALP) is a small legal NGO in Johannesburg that, along with its allies in the Treatment Action Campaign, fought for more than a decade for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. Today South Africa has laws that protect the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS and the largest treatment program in the world. This is not another book about how AIDS is out of control in Africa and Third World nations, or one complaining about the inadequacy of secured funds to fight the pandemic. The author looks objectively at countries that have succeeded in reducing HIV infection rates…along with a worrisome flip side to the progress. The largely medical solutions funded by major donors have had little impact in Africa, the continent hardest hit by AIDS. Instead, relatively simple, low-cost behavioral change programs—stressing increased monogamy and delayed sexual activity for young people—have made the greatest headway in fighting or preventing the disease's spread.
