La Biblia es sin duda el texto más influyente de la historia cultural europea, con una profunda repercusión en variados campos del arte y el pensamiento. Uno de los aspectos más interesantes de las traducciones bíblicas es la riqueza de datos lingüísticos que contienen por ser textos de considerable extensión compuestos en las diferentes etapas formativas de las lenguas europeas. En particular, las traducciones medievales y renacentistas hechas en la península ibérica son un corpus sustancial, pero apenas ha sido explotado como fuente de datos en estudios de lingüística histórica. El objetivo de este volumen es explorar las posibilidades del empleo de las traducciones bíblicas para estudiar desde nuevas perspectivas la historia de las lenguas iberorrománicas. Por un lado se aborda la descripción de la lengua de las traducciones bíblicas en castellano, catalán y portugués y, al mismo tiempo, se contribuye al conocimiento de la historia de estas lenguas mediante análisis de una nómina de fenómenos morfosintácticos de interés teórico. El volumen viene a llenar una laguna importante pues reúne por primera vez estudios de variación y cambio lingüísticos hechos a partir de textos bíblicos en lenguas iberorrománicas.

Was der Verhaltensbiologie gelungen ist – nämlich die Entwicklung von einer beschreibenden zu einer erklärenden Wissenschaft – das sollte auch Ziel der Linguistik sein. Der Autor zeigt auf, wie sich dieses Ziel im systemtheoretischen Rahmen erreichen lässt. Zunächst ist das Grundlagenproblem unzureichender Begriffsdefinitionen und Testverfahren zu lösen, um zu korrekten Beschreibungen und induktiv abgeleiteten Gesetzmäßigkeiten zu gelangen. Dadurch lassen sich bereits viele neue Erkenntnisse gewinnen. Sodann kann man für empirisch ermittelte Sachverhalte nach Erklärungen suchen, die auf allgemeinen Prinzipien oder Erwartungen beruhen. Diese Suche ist unter anderem dann zumeist erfolgreich, wenn sie durch Symmetriebrüche und eine konsequente Faktorenanalyse erleichtert wird.

Work in morphology is typically concerned with productive word formation and regular inflection, in any event with open class categories such as verbs, nouns, and adjectives, and their various forms. The Architecture of Determiners, by contrast, is devoted to a set of function words: the closed class of determiners. While it is traditionally assumed that function words are syntactically atomic, Thomas Leu shows that a comparative perspective on a series of determiners - each insistently vivisected into its minimal morphotactic segments - reveals an anatomy with properties analogous to clausal syntax, including a lexical, an inflectional, and left peripheral layer, as well as transformational relations among subconstituents. Leu argues that determiners are extended adjectival projections with a closed class minimal stem. Leu focuses on Swiss German and German, using other Germanic and non-Germanic languages as a comparative domain. His discussion of the internal structure of determiners includes demonstratives (ch.2), distributive quantifiers (ch.4), possessive and negative determiners (ch.5), and interrogative determiners such as'was für'(ch.6). His main claim - that all of these involve extended adjectival projections - connects naturally to a discussion of adjectival / determiner inflection in German. Chapter 3 addresses the oft-debated strong versus weak agreement alternation in a novel way, proposing that the adjective moves within its own extended projection, in a way akin to verb movement to C in the clause. This accounts for the central facts of nominative and accusative inflection. Chapter 7, then, addresses dative and genitive morphology, setting them syntactically apart from adjectival / determiner inflection in a way that leads to a surprising account of most of the systematic (meta-) syncretism patterns in German adjectival inflection.

This volume advances our understanding of how word structure in terms of affix ordering is organized in the languages of the world. A central issue in linguistic theory, affix ordering receives much attention amongst the research community, though most studies deal with only one language. By contrast, the majority of the chapters in this volume consider more than one language and provide data from typologically diverse languages, some of which are examined for the first time. Many chapters focus on cases of affix ordering that challenge linguistic theory with such phenomena as affix repetition and variable ordering, both of which are shown to be neither rare nor typical only of lesser-studied languages with unstable grammatical organization, as previously assumed. The book also offers an explicit discussion on the non-existence of phonological affix ordering, with a focus on mobile affixation, and one on the emergence of affix ordering in child language, the first of its kind in the literature. Repetitive operations, undesirable in many theories, are frequent in early child language and seem to serve as trainings for morphological decomposition and affix stacking. Thus, the volume also raises important questions regarding the general architecture of grammar and the nature and side effects of our theoretical assumptions.

This volume explores the syntax, semantics, and morphology of -ble adjectives within Distributed Morphology. It presents a decompositional analysis of -ble that captures intralinguistic variation and accounts for morphologically more complex languages. It contributes novel empirical data. First, the grammaticality of -ble formations derived from unergatives and unaccusatives in Spanish is argued to be a function of their exoskeletal properties in interaction with language-specific facts and features of the grammar of cognation, degrees, quantification and Aktionsart. A previously unnoticed correlation between the Spanish data and a cognate configuration with unaccusatives in English reinforces the proposal. Second, the grammaticality of denominal -ble adjectives in Romance and their absence in English relates aspects of the internal structure of -ble to issues pertaining to the eventive properties and syntactico-semantic status of the base nouns. This crosslinguistic proposal implicates central issues in the syntax-semantics-morphology interface, e.g. cross category derivations, locus of variation, or status of impossible words.

The joint enterprise between research in theoretical linguistics and the acquisition of phonology and morphology is the focus of this volume, which provides fresh data from Hebrew, evaluates old issues and addresses new ones. The volume includes articles on segmental phonology (vowel harmony and consonant harmony), prosodic phonology (the prosodic word, onsets and codas), and phonological errors in spelling. It attempts to bridge the gap between phonology and morphology with articles on the development of filler syllables and the effect of phonology on the development of verb inflection. It also addresses morphology, as well as the development of morphological specification and the assignment of gender in L2 Hebrew. The data are drawn from typically and atypically developing children, using longitudinal and cross-sectional experimental methods.
