This book introduces the theory and practice of literary translation through the lens of original short stories translated from Arabic into English. The contributions to this volume investigate relations of cohesion and coherence as well as instantiations of discourse phenomena and their interaction with information structure in multilingual contexts. Some contributions concentrate on procedures to analyze cohesion and coherence from a corpus-linguistic perspective. Others have a particular focus on textual cohesion in parallel corpora that include both originals and translated texts. Additionally, the papers in the volume discuss the nature of cohesion and coherence with implications for human and machine translation.The contributors are experts on discourse phenomena and textuality who address these issues from an empirical perspective. The chapters in this volume are grounded in the latest research making this book useful to both experts of discourse studies and computational linguistics, as well as advanced students with an interest in these disciplines. We hope that this volume will serve as a catalyst to other researchers and will facilitate further advances in the development of cost-effective annotation procedures, the application of statistical techniques for the analysis of linguistic phenomena and the elaboration of new methods for data interpretation in multilingual corpus linguistics and machine translation.

Wolfgang Pöckls Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen ein weites Spektrum: von der Kontrastiven Sprachwissenschaft zur Übersetzungsgeschichte bis hin zur Fachsprachenforschung und Fachübersetzung und – nicht zuletzt – zur Literaturübersetzung. Diese Festschrift für Wolfgang Pöckl bietet einen repräsentativen Querschnitt zu verschiedensten Bereichen, u. a. der Sprachpolitik, Kontrastiven Linguistik, Varietätenlinguistik, Kulturwissenschaft, Fachkommunikation, Dolmetschwissenschaft und Literaturübersetzung. Das Spektrum der behandelten Sprachen umfasst dabei germanische, romanische und slawische Sprachen bis hin zum Griechischen. Die BeiträgerInnen entstammen zu einem überwiegenden Teil Forschungs- und Ausbildungsstätten, an denen Wolfgang Pöckl gewirkt und seine Spuren hinterlassen hat.

Diese Festschrift ehrt Martin Forstner, Professor an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz und zeichnet einige der wesentlichen Initiativen eines grossen Gelehrten und Wegebereiters nach, dessen Forschung und Publikationen für die Translationswissenschaft als richtungweisend gelten. Das vorliegende Werk beinhaltet ferner die Modellisierung von Übersetzungstheorien, die Aspekte der Theaterübersetzung, die Rechtsterminologie für das Sprachenpaar arabisch-deutsch, die neuen Marktanforderungen, die interkulturelle Kompetenz, skizziert die Beziehung zwischen Philologie und Übersetzung, stellt Überlegungen zur Bolognareform an und unterstreicht, dass Bilingualismus nicht zwangsweise mit übersetzerischer Kompetenz gleichzusetzen ist. In this interdisciplinary study Henry Schogt explores the relations between linguistics, literary analysis, and literary translation. He offers an analysis of both theory and practice of literary translation and literary analysis in the light of contemporary linguistic theories. Various aspects of language are examined: sound, grammar, morphology and syntax, semantics, style, social and geographical variants from the system-oriented point of view of linguistics and from that of the individual literary text. Discussions of general problems cover the conflict between system usage and norm, the theory of cost and yield, and the nature of the linguistic sign. Questions more specifically relevant for literary analysis and literary translation are also addressed. How does one deal with sound symbolism? How does the translator cope with the problem raised by the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, according to which each language represents a different world view? Does the reader/receiver-oriented text analysis destroy the identity of the text and thereby give the translator complete freedom? Schogt reviews some happy and some not so happy encounters of linguistics and literary analysis, and concludes with an assessment of the prospects for a fruitful collaboration of linguistics, literary analysts, and translators.
