It is a fictional action research on the topic of chunks and the willingness to communicate of students in the EFL classroom. Although this study is not conducted, the main research interest is to find out whether teaching chunks in the EFL classroom can lead to an increase of students´ willingness to communicate during a lesson. The focus is on fifth-grade students at a secondary school (Realschule) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, who are still at the beginning of their foreign language learning process. Before the study can be discussed, background information is needed to introduce the necessary terminology. In addition, existing research in the area of lexical chunks in foreign language teaching will be presented. A brief explanation of the research context which consists of the hypothesis as well as indicators that will be used in conducting this study, follows. Next, the study design is presented, describing the structure of the study and the teacher's approach, as well as the type of research (qualitative/quantitative/mixed method). The next step includes a more detailed explanation of how the used methods (questionnaires, video-audio observation) were applied and how they were analyzed.Finally, the expected results of the study are presented in the conclusion.

In the end, if necessary, I will suggest adjustments to the tasks that take into account more of the spectrum of neurodiversity found in language learners. Aphantasia is a condition that describes people who cannot voluntarily conjure images in their minds. Since Zeman described it in 2015, mental imaging extremes have received more attention. It has not yet been shown in more than anecdotal evidence, how the inability to form mental images influences language learning, but considering the visual dominance of Western society, and our school systems especially, it stands to reason that aphantasics and people with limited mental imagery capabilities could be negatively impacted.

The research will be performed on the exemplary textbook series ‘Green Line'and to be more specific, on the edition ‘Green Line 03 G9'which is used in the seventh grade of many grammar schools in NRW. In the beginning of this paper, a closer look will be taken on the theoretical frameworks of both ICC and Global Education to delimit the exact aspects that will be analysed in the textbook. An analysis of the core curriculum of NRW will follow to conclude how important these concepts are regarded as in the educational system. Also, a look will be taken at an exemplary school curriculum that makes use of the Green Line series. The main part of this treatise will include a systematic in-depth evaluation of the tasks and contents of the'Green Line 03'textbook in regard to the research objects of ICC and Global Education, followed by a synopsis of the well-executed parts of the textbook, as well as the areas in which there have to be further improvements. The first chapter presents an overall description of vocabulary and to its function in EFL classroom. Additionally, it explains what aspects learners should know in order to possess complete knowledge of an item. The treatment of the process of remembering and presenting vocabulary items is also presented. The second chapter gives an overview of teenagers, their developmental changes and the influence they have on a teaching and learning process. Moreover, this part of the diploma paper discusses difficulties when teaching teenagers and the strong impact that technology has on students. The third chapter discusses the educational value of games in a foreign language teaching. It also presents game's definition and the criteria of selecting games. Additionally, the chapter discusses the drawbacks of using games in EFL classroom. The last chapter is the practical part of this project and it describes the action research carried out in a junior high school in Września. This chapter presents lesson plans and description of the proceedings of the lessons. The study intended to find out whether games are a useful tool for vocabulary revision and how they influence students motivation and behaviour.

Examination Thesis in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous,, language: English, abstract: This paper aims to gather evidence and improve existing knowledge about the factors that influence EFL students'attitudes towards plurilingualism as well as to investigate the extent to which EFL students'attitudes towards EFL learning foster or hinder plurilingualism. An ideal way to investigate these questions would be through interviews, surveys or classroom observations. However, I believe that social science research should not be limited to primary data, especially during a pandemic when schools and children are overwhelmed by social distancing and the overuse of virtual learning. Therefore, in this paper, I examine existing empirical studies on language learning to answer the research questions. EFL stands for English as a foreign language. This term is most commonly used for students whose first language is not English and who learn English while living in their home country. The term'monolingual'in this paper refers to those who speak the language of their nation as their mother tongue. A bilingual person is someone who can speak two languages at a high level, and a multilingual person is someone who can communicate in more than two languages at a high level. ‘L1'refers to one's mother tongue, and ‘L2'is the language learned after the first language, generally after the mother tongue. First, a brief overview of the transition of language education from monolingualism to plurilingualism is given. Then plurilingualism and attitudes are defined and discussed. After that, the traces of plurilingualism and attitude in foreign language teaching-learning practices in schools are then discussed. To this end, some empirical studies dealing with pupils'attitudes towards plurilingualism will be presented and critically examined. This is followed by a conclusion that includes the limitations of the work and suggestions for future research.

The micropolitics of Kendrick Lamar are to be analysed. But what exactly does that mean? This paper will look at what micropolitics means to Kendrick Lamar. Does he define his political opinion through his ethnicity? In this paper, political hip hop and rap will be examined in particular. One of the most important rappers of the 21st century will be used for this purpose: Kendrick Lamar. This paper will deal with how Kendrick Lamar reveals his political opinion in his works. What qualifies him for this thesis is, that Kendrick Lamar raps a lot about racism, discrimination and life as a black person in his songs. But not only these topics are dealt with in his songs. The reference to religion is not neglected either. What runs like a thread through all his songs and albums is the marginalisation of black people. Kendrick Lamar sees himself as the voice of the black oppressed society. He gives them his voice and tries to draw attention to various issues. In the following, micropolitics will be first defined and it will be worked out what it means for the culture and what role popular culture plays here. The most important part of this work is to understand how micropolitics can be used to better understand hip hop. This will be elaborated mainly in the second chapter. Furthermore, this thesis will briefly compare micropolitics and politics and work out what part hip hop can play here. At this point, it will be made clear why Kendrick Lamar resorts to politics in his songs and what politics actually means in this case. Once these basics have been clarified, Kendrick Lamar will be briefly introduced in order to better understand the background of his music. Afterwards, his political attitude will be elaborated. This will be done based on his four published studio albums. Furthermore, four different songs, each song from a different album to see his development, will be analysed in detail. A music video will also be subjected to this analysis.

Altogether the paper essentially consists of three main parts. The first part provides the theoretical framework to understand the nature of the phenomenon. Here the concept of subculture with its different approaches is introduced and the subcultural meaning of style will be analysed. Furthermore, the issues of class, masculinity and age, which are closely linked to the study of subcultures, will be considered in relation to football hooliganism in England. In the second part I will examine the development of hooliganism in England, starting in the 1960s when football-related violence attracted great public interest for the first time. Subsequently two events which can be seen as a watershed in the history of the English disease, Heysel and Hillsborough, will be analysed not only in terms of their procedure, but especially regarding their impact on football hooliganism. Part three deals with two selected films related to the subject of football hooliganism in England. Firstly, a plot synopsis of Lexi Alexander's “Green Street Hooligans” and Pat Holden's “Awaydays” will be provided. Afterwards, I will analyse specific selected scenes with reference to traces of the subculture that can be found in the films. In the final chapter the main findings will be summarised and the formulated questions will be finally answered.

In chapter one of this research paper, I will deal with the main characteristics of tragic hero as explained by Aristotle in his book Poetics that makes Lily Bart as a female tragic hero. The three main characteristics: firstly, her hamartia or tragic flaws which make her downfall at the end of the novel. Secondly, Lily Bart's recognition that she is unable to achieve her dreams.Thirdly, Lily Bart's reversals in her life. In addition, chapter two will discuss Lily Bart's inherited tragic fate and the use of Edith Charles Darwin's theory in building the fate of her character Miss Lily. It also will highlight the term of coincidence in Lily Bart's meetings with men because this coincidence also leads Miss Lily Bart to her downfall. Finally, the last chapter of this research paper will be about Miss Lily Bart's unfulfilled dreams. All of these chapters show how Miss Lily Bart is a truly female tragic hero.

In the next chapters, I will focus on how British feminists both use the digital space as the medium of their agenda and examine it as a subject of their art and whether and if so, how their works contrast with other Western feminisms. After outlining features characteristic of contemporary British feminist activism and art and their relation to the digital space, I will provide and analyze some examples of feminist analogue and digital art on the internet. Regarding the fact that the majority of scholars consider the fourth wave to have been initiated by the rise of the internet and, more concretely, social media, it is the starting point of this paper with the other waves being neglected. The first part will cover theory, whereas the second one will then closely look at how this is realized in practice. Du Bois'concept of double consciousness can be discerned in contemporary expressions of Hip Hop culture. Furthermore, it is going to be explored how this concept can be visually represented by analyzing Kendrick Lamar's music video to the song Alright from the Album To Pimp a Butterfly. First, a definition of Du Bois'concept of double consciousness is going to be given in order to delineate the characteristics and possible interpretations of it. The concept is going to be defined as an internal conflict that expresses the hardship of reconciling two distinct perspectives and identities into one body. Moreover, formal aspects of The Souls of Black Folk are going to provide evidence for the argument, that Du Bois writing style facilitates the communication of the concept of double consciousness throughout his work. The effects of double consciousness and the importance of cultural expressions in the process of finding one's own cultural identity are also going to be analyzed in more detail in the second chapter of this paper. In order to analyze Kendrick Lamar's music video, a brief introduction to the medium is going to be given. Through Keazor's and Wübbena's work the origins of this medium will be determined and presented. Moreover, the most important technical elements of the music video in general are going to be mentioned as well. Railton and Watson propose in their work Music Video and the Politics of Representation a systematic categorization of music videos, by identifying four different type of music videos: 1. Pseudo-Documentary music video, 2. Art music video, 3. Narrative music video and 4. Staged Performance music video (Railton and Watson). The music video Alright is going to be analyzed by determining how the director Colin Tilley establishes the single scenes in the music video. Firstly, possible thematically coherent segments have to be identified. Through a frame by frame analysis the cinematic techniques and the aesthetics of each segment of the music video are going to be analyzed. Secondly, the song lyrics and their visual representation in the music video are also going to be examined. Thirdly, the concept of double consciousness is going to be identified in Kendrick Lamar's music video by illustrating how double consciousness is visually represented.

It investigates the field of foreign language didactics and analyzes Cadi Ayyad students'needs in foreign languages. The research was carried out using questionnaires that were administered to a sample of 435 students from six faculties and ENS in Marrakech. The results revealed that the majority of the respondents are not proficient in foreign languages and that they are willing to learn another foreign language. The purpose of the paper then is to suggest practical strategies and techniques for Cadi Ayyad Language Center to implement with the aim of enhancing the University students'foreign language skills.

The first one,'experience of time and history', is solely concerned with The Sound and the Fury (intra-textual part) whereas the second one'the disruption of narrative traditions'necessarily takes other works into account (inter-textual part). The former constitutes a close textual analysis of the two notions of'time'and of'history'as seen through the eyes of the major characters, it is therefore centred on content; the latter focuses on technical and stylistic questions and is correspondingly centred on form. Nevertheless, the treatment of the first part must be divided in two since the terms'time'and'history'though they are similar in that they are both'diachroni-cal'actually are quite different. Time in itself may be regarded as some sort of naked or unreflected history, a primary experience of the succession of events which has not been ordered and put together yet. History is the usually ordered and documented and thereby secondary portrayal of time by human societies; it is generally subdivided into - according to its relevance for society as a whole - social, political, national, regional, economic, religious history etc. or family and individual history. I will only focus on family and individual history here since other aspects are of lesser relevance in The Sound and the Fury. One chapter is dedicated to each of the three elements of the topic, of which the first one - time - is the most important as it serves as basis for the compre-hension and approach of the two other parts.

The present paper is intended to present the history of the Geneva Bible, starting with a detailed approach to the historical background of Renaissance England, then explaining the making of the Bible, and with that of course explaining the convenient composition of it, and finally presenting the historical facts which highlight the high popularity within, and influence of the Geneva Bible on the Anglo-American community.

Having already seen the film, I remarked several differences while reading the book and since then I wanted to discover their significances; so when I had to choose a topic for my research paper, the comparison of the Holly in the novella and the Audrey-Hepburn-version of her was one of the topics that I gave most preference to. In order to do that, I will first look at the author's life and summarize the storylines of novel and film adaptation so that one can find the content-related differences early in the examination. The second part will contain a characterization of Holly in the novel, followed by a comparison to the Holly in the film. The third part of this paper will explain the differences and conclusively try to find the influences that Holly Golightly has on modern women.

While the majority of students reported no direct impact of English language teaching on their cultural identity, a subtle, layered influence was observed through their adoption of Western cultural norms. On the other hand, teachers displayed an acute awareness of the significant influence of globalization on teaching English, emphasizing the intricate link between language and culture. They highlighted the role of English as a conduit for intercultural communication and as a critical tool for fostering cultural understanding. The findings signal both challenges and opportunities, reinforcing the essential role of teachers in facilitating language learning and intercultural competence in an interconnected educational landscape. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1.7, University of Duisburg-Essen, course: Anglistik EFL, language: English, abstract: The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to investigate how the use of literature as a medium can help implement cultural learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes. Thus, the present work addresses the benefits and challenges of using Angie Thomas'novel'The Hate U Give'to foster intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in 9th grade EFL students. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement received a considerable amount of support after the death of George Floyd in 2020. All over the world, people took to the streets to protest against racism and police brutality. Also in Germany, people of all ages took part. This movement shows that young people are interested in the issue and want to learn more about it. Accordingly, this can be seen as a reason to educate them, because in a world that seems to become more and more polarised, the ability to think critically is more important and indispensable than ever. To answer the research question, the second chapter will describe cultural learning. In addition, it takes a closer look at ICC according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), briefly outlines Byram's ICC model, which forms the basis for my lesson plan, as well as the principles for inter- and transcultural learning, and the concept of Global Citizenship Education. Moreover, by introducing a cross-curricular model called Confronting Prejudice Responses (CPR) model, which is a strategy to confront prejudice that has proven to be an effective means of reducing prejudice and therefore, it will be applied to the EFL classroom. After explaining these theories relevant to cultural learning, this paper will relate them to literature by presenting the benefits and challenges of literature for intercultural and transcultural learning and will further introduce types of tasks to promote intercultural competence through literature. After this, the third chapter clarifies the analysis of the potential for inter- and transcultural learning with the young adult novel'The Hate U Give'(2017) by Angie Thomas. Following this, by referring to the core curriculum for secondary level 1 in North Rhine-Westphalia, the learning objectives for using Angie Thomas'novel in 9th grade will be outlined along with a description of my lesson plan. Finally, a discussion with a reflection in chapter four is explained, followed by a conclusion in chapter five, which gives a brief summary and critique of the findings.

Bret Easton Ellis portrays Patrick as an individual whose life focuses primarily on obsessive consumerism. The condition of postmodernity marks the production of countless commodities that lead to excessive consumerism. This aspect is eminent in Patrick Bateman's behavior which leads to his toxic masculine conduct and seriality of repetitiveness. I argue that the main character, Patrick Bateman, represents these aspects because of a society that focuses above all on outer appearance and status. The aspiration for this ideal causes people to treat themselves and others harmfully. That circumstance makes characters such as Patrick Bateman and others like him treat people as consumer goods while disregarding their feelings and values.'American Psycho'represents this pattern by portraying Patrick Bateman as an ideal performer who endlessly consumes, which shapes his view on others and leads to the subsequent murders since everyone has no real identity and becomes, therefore, interchangeable. Under the economic conditions of postmodernity, where everything is a commodity, people treat other people like commodities and in the same way that products are disposable, people become throwaway as well. Hence, people, particularly women, turn into products for Patrick that he may repeatedly kill because he values having the most of everything; accumulating killing adds to his sense of status. He describes commodities in his environment in the same way he describes the narratives of his serial killings and other acts of violence. Patrick Bateman is merely a part of his environment, where everyone feels the urge to be more significant and superior to everyone else, which inevitably leads to the perpetuation of the same pattern.

Examination Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,5, University of Leipzig (Anglistik), language: English, abstract: This thesis looks at the ongoing phenomenon of cringe comedy in British contemporary television. Taking a cultural studies perspective, it argues that cringe comedy affects toxic masculinity and the way one perceives masculinities. A close reading of the TV series Peep Show provides a number of examples that give insight into how masculinities are constructed in cringe comedy television and the ideology that comes with awkward jokes. With increasing awareness of toxic masculinities and the increasing popularity of cringe comedy television formats that undoubtedly shape Western societies and cultures, it becomes relevant to investigate how humour affects gender stereotypes. When exploring the function of comedy and awkwardness in media, Kotsko (“Awkwardness”) and Middelton found that awkwardness creates a shift to self-reflecting formats, where the spectatorship is being irritated by the uncomfortableness they feel when their expectations are not met on television programs. Studying the meanings of jokes and gender is relevant to understanding how one interacts in cultures and how they use humour as a social tool. This paper contributes to the fields of cultural studies, media studies, and gender studies since humour is used to rationalise social norms in British society, directly its culture. I will argue that the sitcom Peep Show uses cringe comedy as a tool to uncover, create and criticise toxic masculinity characteristics within our society by evoking laughter in the audience.

Whereas some findings suggest benefits through implicit acquisition processes, others believe explicit acquisition to be superior. The paper aims to identify current positions in the literature regarding the efficacy of implicit versus explicit language instruction, learning and knowledge, as well as learning difficulties for specific grammatical features when presented implicitly or explicitly and what the findings imply for the English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. In order to do so, a general literature review was used to analyse the most relevant findings in the field to answer the first question as well as a specific literature review of The Marsden Project by Elder, Ellis (Ed.), Erlam, Loewen, Philp & Reinders (2009) to answer the second research question. Findings include support for both implicit and explicit acquisition processes, although significantly more evidence of learning difficulties were found for the former, indicating that explicit knowledge seems to be acquired more easily. However, SLA-research and successful classroom practices do not always align perfectly, as the curriculum indicates that a shift towards a more communicative approach is favoured and teachers should only include explicit instruction where necessary. It was particularly interesting that some grammatical items seem to be similar in learning difficulty for both processes, suggesting that a wider variety of teaching methods can be implemented into the ESL-classroom. Also, the subjective and objective difficulty of the grammatical items do not always overlap completely, which entails that successful acquisition, regardless of its nature, also depends on the teacher-learner relationship.

However, the academic evaluation of textbooks is surprisingly a rather neglected field of study. Also, the very few studies that evaluate an EFL-textbook mostly only consider the technical dimension of analysis, such as the theoretical perspective of EFL methodology. Yet, to gain a more holistic impression of a textbook, one should also include the practical perspective of EFL teachers. Therefore, the present case study critically evaluates one exemplary textbook combining the theoretical perspective of EFL didactics and the practical perspective of EFL teachers. The TEFL textbook chosen for this case study is titled “English G21 A5” published by Cornelsen in 2010. It is designed for grade 9 at Gymnasium in Germany. Taking Unit 1 of this textbook as an example, this paper aims at examining the potential of this textbook for EFL learning and teaching. The central question is whether the textbook meets the various requirements posed to a textbook including the numerous principles that are part of contemporary EFL methodology and central educational standards. In the first part of the analysis (chapter 4) the question is in how far the textbook meets the theoretical requirements of TEFL. For the second part of the analysis (chapter 5) a small survey was carried out conducting qualitative interviews with four different teachers. Employing qualitative content analysis, the survey intends to find out about the teachers'opinion on the textbook focusing on the question, how the teachers assess the value of the textbook for their teaching practice. Prior to the analysis it is, however, necessary to elaborate on some theoretical background (chapter 2). This involves describing the main paradigms of contemporary EFL methodology as well as illustrating relevant theoretical context in relation to the term textbook and textbook evaluation revealing central requirements EFL textbooks need to fulfil. The aim of this twofold description is to develop a list of criteria (section 2.2.4) that will be used as the foundation of the textbook evaluation. The selected textbook will be introduced in more detail in chapter 3.

Hence, diaries are considered as somehow reporting the truth, or at least one kind of individual truth. Yet what about Dorothea Lange's photographs of the Great Depression? Are they the actual truth or are they her interpretation? One says that a picture is worth a thousand words. People have an idea of what the Great Depression in America looked like, owed to different photographers who portrayed both economic and cultural consequences of the global crisis. One of those photographers was Dorothea Lange. In a first examination of her work documenting the people behind the Great Depression in America, I quickly noticed that critics are either in favour of, or against Lange's photographic work. Since I could not agree with either position, I decided that I want to find my own. By studying and examining different photographs both in the context of the Great Depression and the traditional idea behind documentary photography, I finally discovered what I think of her work. Beginning her career as a documentary photographer, Lange acted as a silent observer behind the camera. She recorded what America's people had to suffer during the depression process without any editing or staging. Yet throughout the years, Lange increasingly went astray the path of documentary photography's basic concepts. Correspondingly, I argue that Dorothea Lange in some of the presented works succeeded in recording reality according to the standard set of photojournalism. However, in others she disregarded or even broke unwritten rules of documentary photography.

There is a great amount of studies on how computers can facilitate the learning of English as a foreign language (EFL) and with the development of immense corpora both teachers and students now have access to hundreds of millions of words and the possibility to explore their occurrence patterns. This advantage is, however, rarely used in practice, partly due to the relatively short existence of this discipline but most importantly due to the lack of information about corpora in English language teaching (ELT). This paper will present the concept of course book vocabulary and present word frequencies in learner's dictionaries. The research part of this thesis deals with a linguistic analysis of data extracted from course books and their comparison with the Oxford list of 3000 essential words. The aim of the thesis is to investigate the linguistic attributes of texts forming course books and to examine their relation.

According to her, women were seen only as a sexed group that was subordinated by men. Not only did she search for the roots of this subordination, but also focused on education with the goal of creating a humane and nurturing environment. Basically, she wanted to achieve changes regarding marriage, home, the education of children, and women's work.

Gamification kann das Engagement und den Spielspaß fördern und die Lernleistung und Lernmotivation positiv beeinflussen. Dementsprechend ist Gamification bereits für viele Bereiche wie der Unternehmensführung, dem Marketing, Recruiting oder dem Gesundheitsmanagement eine chancenreiche Methode.

Furthermore, this thesis deals with two main questions. The first question is in which way the test anxiety affects the language skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking comprehension. The second question focusses on the factors that impact language test anxiety in oral production. In order to be able to answer these two questions, I will write about the theoretical background in the first part of my bachelor thesis. First, I will introduce second language acquisition in general, followed by a general definition of anxiety. According to the definition, different types of anxiety are represented. After explaining different types of anxiety, I will explain the topic foreign language anxiety specifically. This is followed by an introduction to the topic of foreign language test anxiety. After the theoretical background has been presented, I will discuss various existing studies to answer the two main questions. For this purpose, I will deal separately with reading, listening, writing and oral production regarding the first question. In the second question, I will then focus specifically on factors that can have an impact on test anxiety. At the end, the results are discussed and concluded.

Klasse dazu führt, dass die Quantität sowie die inhaltliche und sprachliche Qualität von Schülerbeiträgen verbessert wird und c.) ob der Einsatz zur Reduktion der language learning anxiety (LLA) beiträgt. Seit jeher ist ein Hauptproblem des Fremdsprachenunterrichts, allen Schüler:innen eine möglichst hohe Sprechzeit einzuräumen. Manche:r Schüler:in fordert diese Sprechzeit ganz von alleine ein, während andere Schüler:innen, wenn man sie lässt, den Unterricht gänzlich ohne ein einziges Wort zu sagen, bestreiten wollen. Dabei ist der Schülerbeitrag eine für den Unterricht sehr bedeutende Situation. Er bietet dem:der Schüler:in die Chance auf Korrektur durch die Lehrkraft und somit das für das Lernen wichtige Ausprobieren der eigenen interlanguage. Auch bietet er für die Lehrkraft die Möglichkeit der Lernstandsüberprüfung und Fehlerdiagnose. Der Schülerbeitrag lässt sich daher nicht ersetzen. Auf der anderen Seite gehört das freie Sprechen im Unterricht zu den für den Schüler beängstigenden Situationen. Diese Art der Angst (language learning anxiety) steht in Verbindung mit einer verringerten Spracherwerbsfähigkeit. Unsichere Schüler:innen ohne Meldung aufzurufen, kann auch dazu führen, dass der:die Schüler:in keine oder nur unzureichende Antworten gibt. Im schlimmsten Fall erhöht man den Wunsch des:der Schülers:in, sich gänzlich zurückzuziehen. Eine solche Reaktion und die Bildung von language learning anxiety (LLA) kann und darf nicht das Ziel des Unterrichtes sein. Es muss daher nach Wegen gesucht werden, die Schüler:innen zu ermuntern, sich am Unterrichtsgespräch zu beteiligen und eine LLA zu verhindern oder abzubauen. Einen solchen Weg kann meinem Erachten nach die Murmelphase (auch Buzztalk oder vorgeschaltetes Schülergespräch) darstellen. Murmelphasen oder buzztalks werden seit vielen Jahren im Unterricht, vor allem auch im Fremdsprachenunterricht, eingesetzt. Ihr Einsatz wird meist methodisch begründet. Dabei bietet die Murmelphase neben der reinen Schüleraktivierung auch großes Potenzial hinsichtlich des Spracherwerbs und der inhaltlichen Vorentlastung. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass die Murmelphase, als Form kollaborierender Partnerarbeit, durchaus in der Lage sein kann, auch die sprachliche und inhaltliche Qualität von Schülerbeiträgen zu erhöhen.

In the introduction, the main idea and approach of the work is presented. The guiding question is: Are current research results used in schools and if so, how? For this purpose, the two leading textbooks in Germany are examined against previously established principles of second language acquisition. The base text for establishing these principles is'Principles of Instructed Language Learning'by Ellis Rod (2005). Following the introduction, the textbooks'Green Line'and'English G 21'are briefly introduced, and their selection is explained. In both cases, the fifth grade editions are analyzed due to these grades being at the beginning of their learning and because many of the principles established contain a special focus on this phase of learning. Furthermore, the curriculum itself is also considered, as it has a significant influence on the content of the textbooks. The second chapter then deals with the establishment of the principles. Based on Ellis'text, current research findings that are directly related to language teaching are summarized and with its help, implementation possibilities are suggested. These implementation possibilities, in turn, form the basis of the analysis of the textbooks.

Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 3.81, Addis Ababa University, language: English, abstract: The major objective of the study was to assess students'perceptions towards EFL large classes in terms of its instructional, psychological and social aspects and their perceived challenges. To this end, two preparatory schools were selected owing to their convenience for the study, the researchers'familiarity with the situation and the serious situational constraints related to EFL large class size with special reference to grade eleven. To achieve the purpose of the study, a descriptive research method was employed because the main objective was just to gather information about students'perceptions and their perceived difficulties. Likert-scale type questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were employed to gather adequate data from the student respondents, but only open-ended and close-ended questionnaires were distributed to eight randomly selected EFL teachers to confirm data obtained from their students. The instruments were piloted before the main study on 20 students and some modifications were made on their grammar and wordings, but six items were rejected. Out of 1545 students, 155 were selected as samples through simple random sampling technique and ten of them were voluntarily selected and interviewed. The data collected through likert type questionnaires were analyzed through descriptive statistics like frequency, percentages and means. Data gathered through interview were analyzed through descriptive statements. The data gathered through questionnaires were substantiated by the data obtained through interview.

Particularly, this study aimed to assess the value of specific oral communication skills within occupational contexts, identify oral communication problems of THMS and explore the communicative events that arise during oral interactions. To attain the objectives, this research employed cross-sectional survey design and explanatory method for data analysis. The practitioners'questionnaire was distributed to 110 tourism and hospitality guest-facing practitioners, and THMS (n=70) filled in THMS'questionnaire. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 3 subject area lecturers. The quantitative data were processed by using SPSS 20 while the qualitative ones were coded based on semantic affinity for analysis. The study revealed that listening skills such as comprehending colloquial and idiomatic expressions, understanding guests'multifarious English accents, recognizing meaning shift because of change in intonation and stress are worthwhile for THMS'prospective careers in tourism and hospitality sector. Effective communication with guests on the phone, clear and direct speech, interpretation without meaning distortion and appropriate responses to guests'requests and complaints were found to be equally important speaking skills. Similarly, eye-contact, facial expressions, gesture, tone and pitch volume were found to be the salient non-verbal communication behaviors that should comply with the communicative contexts during oral interactions. The research indicated that most THMS lacked spoken production skills, spoken interaction skills and nonverbal communication skills. It also showed that the communicative events that arise during oral communication in occupational and academic contexts require THMS to have good command of oral proficiency. Therefore, it can be concluded that THMS'current oral proficiency may adversely affect their academic performance and employability skills. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends oral communication trainings that can enhance THMS'academic involvements and employability skills, and the inclusion of oral communication courses in THM curriculum for prospective use.

Nonetheless, conversational participants, such as EFL learners, may fail to interpret the intended meaning of newly-inserted utterances in the EFL context. Therefore, the current dissertation highlights the effect of the Gricean Implicature, namely conversational implicature, on EFL learners'linguistic inferences in the EFL context. It hypothesizes that applying conversational implicatures in EFL classroom activities can enhance male and female EFL learners'linguistic inferences. It can also motivate them to interpret the implicit meaning behind the target utterances, reaching effective and successful communication. Besides, it attempts to explain why EFL learners succeed or fail at making the correct linguistic inferences of the target conversational implicatures. The researcher conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses to test and validate the dissertation's hypotheses. She collects data by directly observing students'performance, asking open-ended questions, and implementing a writing phase to push the students to act upon the target conversational implicatures, thus enhancing their linguistic inferences and maintaining effective communication during the English session

Referring to this, textbook research is a relevant field of study, because a critical look at current teaching material is always needed to ensure that it is appropriate for pupils as well as it is of good quality considering the achievement of educational goals. To give exemplary research findings, the analysis will focus on textbooks of class eight at Hauptschule (Blue Line 4) and Realschule (Red Line 4) in Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany published by Klett, whereupon in each case the recent version of the year 2017 was chosen. To narrow down the research project furthermore, the work will zoom in on the first unit of the books, which is “Gateway NYC”. The main topic of this bachelor´s thesis will therefore be: “Do tasks and exercises in English Foreign Language textbooks promote Intercultural Competence? - An exemplary analysis based on the topic New York”. The intention of the work on hand is to evaluate the quality of tasks and exercises for the promotion of Intercultural Competence. To answer the main question of this thesis, the work has been divided into two parts. The first one summarises the most important information and theses on the topic. The second one examines the available textbook material in detail by means of an empirical method. In the theoretical chapter, Intercultural Competence with respect to its definition, importance and establishment in didactics will be explained. Thereupon, the relevance of tasks and exercises in class will be discussed and four quality features of assignments promoting Intercultural Competence will be chosen, which will allow an evaluation of these. In the following, the tasks from the Blue Line 4 and Red Line 4 schoolbooks will be analysed. After investigating the tasks´ quality individually, the findings will be comprehended and discussed. In the conclusion, the fundamental research findings will finally be recapped and the question of the bachelor´s thesis will be answered.

Außerdem untersuche ich die Gemeinsamkeiten mit und die Unterschiede zum Gegenpol des self-depricating humor, disparaging beziehungsweise other-deprecating humor, da die Unterschiede in der Stand-up Comedy in der Wirkung manchmal gering und die Übergänge teilweise fließend sind. Darüber hinaus gebe ich einen kurzen, zusammenfassenden Überblick über die Geschichte der Stand-up Comedy in Nordamerika und bespreche anschließend drei gängige Humortheorien ( Superiority, Relief und lncongruity theory), um den Einsatz von self-deprecating humor zu kontextualisieren. Zur Veranschaulichung habe ich exemplarisch zwei sogenannte skits (Teile einer Stand-up show) des Komikers Jim Jefferies herangezogen, durch die der Einsatz von self-deprecating humor verdeutlicht wird.

The results of this research can provide information for parents, teachers and caregivers on choosing appropriate picture books for bibliotherapy. When Covid-19 arrived, the disease quickly spread fear, confusion, and panic, resulting in a lockdown which affected many countries around the globe. Children's routines were abruptly changed, and a lot of contrasting information was spread about the virus. During this time, people had to reach out for mental, emotional and physical help more than ever. On the one hand, having to stay alone at home as well as social distancing brought loneliness, boredom and fatigue. On the other hand, being confined with others increased the stress on relationships. The pandemic increased children's exposure to domestic and sexual violence, and greatly reduced their contact to other important people in their lives. For children, effective intervention measures were crucial to assist them throughout the pandemic so that they gained a better understanding of how to handle situations effectively. Systematic reading for therapeutic purposes can improve coping strategies and help make more informed decisions. Reading stories with children can open a safe space, teach them that they are not alone, provide insight into what is happening around them and offer information that can help them overcome their circumstances. Numerous approaches can be used to assist children in dealing with difficult situations. One of these can be bibliotherapy, a valuable intervention that can help by coping with the effects of a lockdown and paying specific attention to the changed situation. It can allow children to face the uncertainty produced by school lockdowns and the inability to see friends and family. Bibliotherapy can provide guidance in identifying problems, discussing feelings, and exploring possible solutions. Books have been a tool of change and can assist in making decisions and coping with difficult situations.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,7, University of Dortmund, language: English, abstract: This thesis raises the questions why we need digitalization, what it can offer, and analyses how it can be implemented in the classroom. In order to answer this question thoroughly and analyse the software in great detail, the first chapter of this thesis lays the theoretical basis for some didactic theories. The second chapter provides insights on digitalization, in context with multiliteracies and the SAMR-model. In chapter three, the analyzation of the software H5P answers the initially raised questions. The COVID-19 pandemic put the spotlight to schools and the school system in general. After 18 months of homeschooling and remote education it became obvious, that digitalization had not reached the classroom before and very little progress has been achieved until now. Even though theoretically digital tools were available, it lacked on a working infrastructure in schools in the sense of Wi-Fi, hardware or well-trained teachers. Whether it is for the missing devices as a result of the paperwork to apply for the ‘Digitalpakt Schule', because of the missing reasons to deal with digitalization in schools as such, or because the teachers are not trained enough to use them; digitalization in schools did not seem necessary, nor wanted, and that was no subject to change for a long time. In the last few years loads of books, training courses for teachers, congresses, blogs and tweets appeared and at least theoretically digitalization reached schools and classrooms. It seems that ‘digitalization in the English language classroom'has finally reached teacher education programs at universities and raises a whole new generation of teachers. Not only future teachers, but also current ones should be keen to know why years ago schools stopped to keep up with digitalization, why it needs to be implemented in schools, what it offers, where its limitations are and how traditional teaching methods can be modified into digital settings.

Therefore, the first chapter will examine the difference between homeschooling and distance learning, since their definitions are not the same. It is also relevant to look at different countries and their regulations and implementations for home-schooling or distance learning in order to retrace the arguments for and against a possible implementation of homeschooling in Germany. The closure of German schools during the lockdown(s) forced teachers, students and parents to change over to distance learning. As this adjustment has presented a challenge for all persons involved, there is a need to identify appropriate tools and methods for the virtual EFL classroom. Hence, it is relevant to learn about the experiences of teachers who presented and students who attended online English lessons. This will be done in form of online questionnaires which aim to identify appropriate digital resources for the virtual EFL classroom as well as possibilities and problems that could arise from distance learn-ing in EFL. The final step of this thesis is to develop a sample online English lesson in times of distance learning as an alternative possibility to a traditional English lesson in the class-room on the basis of the results from the questionnaires. Therefore, both perspectives -teachers and students- will be taken into consideration, since their experiences help to im-prove distance learning in English. The main goal of the development of this online lesson in English is to show that teachers are also able to fulfill the requirements of the curriculum in distance learning and bearing this in mind, a possible implementation of a hybrid learning system could be an alternative way of learning and teaching for the future.

In this thesis, success and therefore a successful lesson is defined as following: To communicate the subject matter in the most efficient and the most understandable way possible and to ensure that the subject matter is presented in the most understandable way possible is mostly up to the teacher. He needs to know what he is talking about and must be able to communicate it in a way to make it understandable for everyone in the class. Besides the verbal communication, the nonverbal communication is also of importance in this aspect. Effective Teaching is the last body language chapter in this thesis, which is all about postures, mimics and gestures that make the verbal message more understandable and interesting. By using the information contained in the following chapters, the teacher can analyze, based on the student's body language, if they engage in the desired behavior. If this is not the case, this thesis provides body language signs for the educator to use, that will cause students to respond with the desired behavior. This is the reason why this thesis is split up into the four big chapters Motivation, Trust, Respect and Effective Teaching. The didactic purpose of each chapter will be explained in the following segment.
