Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography,, language: English, abstract: The paper presents the grandeur of Great Britain in the 19th century. It analyses and shows Great Britain in the period of development together the factors that could be the reason for such a change. The rapid progress together with expansion policy and good economic situation allowed the kingdom to enter a higher technological stage. However, did such rapid progress affect the well-being of the country's citizens? Many benefited from a multitude of patents and inventions available on the market and increased their comfort of living. Too fast industrialization and a constant construction of factories increased the level of pollution, health problems and cleanliness. The first chapter describes the historical background which presents certain conditions thanks to which England could develop. The second chapter describes the industrial revolution and the progress that characterized the Victorian times. The third chapter describes some negative effects of industrialization and people's lives subjected to an abrupt development processes. Further, the work contains many interesting facts, descriptions of inventions and illustrations.

This study had a research purpose and a pedagogical purpose. Research disclosed the dynamic, changing nature of (learner-internal and learner-external) variables that influence strategic competence for developing EFL/ESL writers. This competence was found necessary for international graduate students to move from writer-centered learning to reader-centered communication. The research instruments proved to be practical tools for guiding learners'processes of learning and writing a scholarly paper or article and avoiding plagiarism. The implication for teachers and program administrators is a systematic approach for developing self-regulation (control) in EFL/ESL writing. The first part of the book reports on the mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) research. The second part gives an in-depth report of the 6 cases used in the research. The third part presents tools for systematically developing self-regulation in scholarly (and academic) writing with (a) student and teacher checklists for formative assessment that are valid and reliable; and (b) a model syllabus for teachers that can be adapted across disciplines and genres. These tools deal with learning strategies and their applications to writing and writing instruction.

The tale mocks the typical medieval romance, therefore it is first necessary to estabish what the term'romance'means in this context. Then, the various parodied aspects of content will be examined, including Sir Thopas himself, his not-so-heroic battles, and love. However, formal aspects as well have been heavily parodied in Sir Thopas and will be in focus, namely rhyming, descriptions, the minstrel's introduction as well as the general structure of the tale, including its end.

When reading on, most of the works revise their opinion and admit that actually Richard was not any more blood thirsty or brutal than other contemporary monarchs, that the'popular belief'that he killed his Nephews in the Tower, and that he was malformed, was actually not a fact, but an assumption, which has not been proven up to this day. Although most of the time the reliable sources revise their opinion about this monarch a few paragraphs later, the first impression on the history-interested person is made. The question here is what creates or created this image of the villainous and deformed Richard III? Some history books mention William Shakespeare's history The Tragedy of King Richard III as one of the possible works that have been influencing the people's opinions about this English king. This essay is intended to analyze in what way Shakespeare's work undermines this thesis and what picture he really drew of the monarch Richard III. In order to understand this complex matter, the essay will guide through the historical background of the drama and will try to analyze the notion of Shakespeare's portrayal. Furthermore, as the character of Richard appears in earlier plays already, the beginnings of the character will be presented in order to highlight the complexity of the character's development. In addition, two characterizing scenes will be examined, so that the different views on Richard's complexion can be observed. The last part consists of a short analysis of Richard's counterpart Richmond, which emphasizes the impact that Richard's complexion has on the audience.

Lingua francas are languages used for communication between individuals for whom they are not the first language. Based on empirical work throughout, the individual contributions to this volume address lingua franca communication from sociolinguistic as well as from conversation analytic perspectives, or place this form of communication within the wider context of foreign language teaching. The volume as a whole attempts to broaden the traditional view of lingua francas as languages employed by non-native speakers to serve specific, restricted communicative purposes only. Instead, it is demonstrated that lingua francas have gained a number of varied functions, and that they are employed by a heterogeneous group of speakers for whom they do not always have the same status of a second or foreign language. The papers reveal intriguing similarities in form across different lingua francas, but also point at significant differences. As a result, it is proposed that approaches to teach lingua francas as such need to be developed on the basis of empirical evidence.
