This book examines the most fundamental parts of convex analysis and its applications to optimization and location problems. Accessible techniques of variational analysis are employed to clarify and simplify some basic proofs in convex analysis and to build a theory of generalized differentiation for convex functions and sets in finite dimensions. The book serves as a bridge for the readers who have just started using convex analysis to reach deeper topics in the field. Detailed proofs are presented for most of the results in the book and also included are many figures and exercises for better understanding the material. Applications provided include both the classical topics of convex optimization and important problems of modern convex optimization, convex geometry, and facility location.

A sentence of first-order logic is satisfiable if it is true in some structure, and finitely satisfiable if it is true in some finite structure. The question arises as to whether there exists an algorithm for determining whether a given formula of first-order logic is satisfiable, or indeed finitely satisfiable. This question was answered negatively in 1936 by Church and Turing (for satisfiability) and in 1950 by Trakhtenbrot (for finite satisfiability).In contrast, the satisfiability and finite satisfiability problems are algorithmically solvable for restricted subsets---or, as we say, fragments---of first-order logic, a fact which is today of considerable interest in Computer Science. This book provides an up-to-date survey of the principal axes of research, charting the limits of decision in first-order logic and exploring the trade-off between expressive power and complexity of reasoning. Divided into three parts, the book considers for which fragments of first-order logic there is an effective method for determining satisfiability or finite satisfiability. Furthermore, if these problems are decidable for some fragment, what is their computational complexity? Part I focusses on fragments defined by restricting the set of available formulas. Topics covered include the Aristotelian syllogistic and its relatives, the two-variable fragment, the guarded fragment, the quantifier-prefix fragments and the fluted fragment. Part II investigates logics with counting quantifiers. Starting with De Morgan's numerical generalization of the Aristotelian syllogistic, we proceed to the two-variable fragment with counting quantifiers and its guarded subfragment, explaining the applications of the latter to the problem of query answering in structured data. Part III concerns logics characterized by semantic constraints, limiting the available interpretations of certain predicates. Taking propositional modal logic and graded modal logic as our cue, we return to the satisfiability problem for two-variable first-order logic and its relatives, but this time with certain distinguished binary predicates constrained to be interpreted as equivalence relations or transitive relations. The work finishes, slightly breaching the bounds of first-order logic proper, with a chapter on logics interpreted over trees.

Die Gestaltung und Wirkung mathematikbezogener Unterstützungsmaßnahmen für Studierende vor Beginn des Studiums und während des ersten Studienjahrs beschäftigt nicht nur die an den Hochschulen lehrenden Mathematiker•innen, sondern auch Fachdidaktiker•innen, Hochschuldidaktiker•innen, Hochschulleitungen sowie die Bildungspolitik. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes resultieren aus einer langjährigen engen Kooperation zwischen Lehrenden aus 17 Universitäten und dem WiGeMath-Team. Den Mittelpunkt bilden konkrete Darstellungen einschlägiger Good-Practice-Beispiele, deren Ziele und Gestaltung jeweils um Evaluationsergebnisse ergänzt werden. Darüber hinaus finden sich praxisorientierte Überblickskapitel zu zentralen im WiGeMath-Projekt entwickelten Instrumenten: ein Rahmenmodell, das u. a. der systematischen Einordnung und Reflektion konkreter Maßnahmen dient, und ein Inventar bewährter quantitativer Erhebungsinstrumente. Ergänzend werden die am häufigsten umgesetzten Maßnahmentypen Vorkurse, Brückenvorlesungen und Lernzentren in informativen Kapiteln hinsichtlich ihrer jeweiligen Charakteristika und Wirkungen vorgestellt. This book is intended to serve as a basic introduction to scientific computing by treating problems from various areas of physics - mechanics, optics, acoustics, and statistical reasoning in the context of the evaluation of measurements. After working through these examples, students are able to independently work on physical problems that they encounter during their studies. For every exercise, the author introduces the physical problem together with a data structure that serves as an interface to programming in Excel and Python. When a solution is achieved in one application, it can easily be translated into the other one and presumably any other platform for scientific computing. This is possible because the basic techniques of vector and matrix calculation and array broadcasting are also achieved with spreadsheet techniques, and logical queries and for-loops operate on spreadsheets from simple Visual Basic macros. So, starting to learn scientific calculation with Excel, e.g., at High School, is a targeted road to scientific computing. The primary target groups of this book are students with a major or minor subject in physics, who have interest in computational techniques and at the same time want to deepen their knowledge of physics. Math, physics and computer science teachers and Teacher Education students will also find a companion in this book to help them integrate computer techniques into their lessons. This book presents new computation schemes for the sensitivity of options using the binomial tree and introduces readers to the discrete Malliavin calculus. It also shows that applications of the discrete Malliavin calculus approach to the binomial tree model offer fundamental tools for computing Greeks.The binomial tree approach is one of the most popular methods in option pricing. Although it is a fairly traditional model for option pricing, it is still widely used in financial institutions since it is tractable and easy to understand. However, the book shows that the tree approach also offers a powerful tool for deriving the Greeks for options. Greeks are quantities that represent the sensitivities of the price of derivative securities with respect to changes in the underlying asset price or parameters. The Malliavin calculus, the stochastic methods of variations, is one of the most popular tools used to derive Greeks. However, it is also very difficult to understand for most students and practitioners because it is based on complex mathematics. To help readers more easily understand the Malliavin calculus, the book introduces the discrete Malliavin calculus, a theory of the functional for the Bernoulli random walk. The discrete Malliavin calculus is significantly easier to understand, because the functional space of the Bernoulli random walk is realized in a finite dimensional space. As such, it makes this valuable tool far more accessible for a broad readership.

This book explains compactly, without theoretical superstructure and with as little mathematical formalism as possible, the essential concepts in the encryption of messages and data worthy of protection. The focus is on the description of the historically and practically important cipher, signature and authentication methods. Both symmetric encryption and public-key ciphers are discussed. This book explores recent developments in theoretical research and mathematical modelling of real-world complex systems, organized in four parts. The first part of the book is devoted to the mathematical tools for the design and analysis in engineering and social science study cases. We discuss the periodic evolutions in nonlinear chemical processes, vibro-compact systems and their behaviour, different types of metal–semiconductor self-assembled samples, made of silver nanowires and zinc oxide nanorods. The second part of the book is devoted to mathematical description and modelling of the critical events, climate change and robust emergency scales. In three chapters, we consider a climate-economy model with endogenous carbon intensity and the behaviour of Tehran Stock Exchange market under international sanctions. This book is based on the analysis of canonical commutation relations (CCRs) and their possible deformations. In light of the recent interest on PT-quantum mechanics, the author presents a special deformed version of the CCRs, and discusses the consequences of this deformation both from a mathematical side, and for its possible applications to physics. These include the analysis of several non self-adjoint Hamiltonians, a novel view to the position and momentum operators, and a general approach to compute path integrals and transition probabilities using the so-called bi-coherent states. The book is meant for researchers and is also suited for advanced students. It can be used as a gentle introduction to some delicate aspects in functional analysis and in quantum mechanics for non self-adjoint observables.

The volume covers most of the topics addressed and discussed during the Workshop INdAM'Recent advances in kinetic equations and applications', which took place in Rome (Italy), from November 11th to November 15th, 2019. The volume contains results on kinetic equations for reactive and nonreactive mixtures and on collisional and noncollisional Vlasov equations for plasmas. Some contributions are devoted to the study of phase transition phenomena, kinetic problems with nontrivial boundary conditions and hierarchies of models. The book, addressed to researchers interested in the mathematical and numerical study of kinetic equations, provides an overview of recent advances in the field and future research directions.

The main focus of this book is a pair of cooperative control problems: consensus and cooperative output regulation. Its emphasis is on complex multi-agent systems characterized by strong nonlinearity, large uncertainty, heterogeneity, external disturbances and jointly connected switching communication topologies. The cooperative output regulation problem is a generalization of the classical output regulation problem to multi-agent systems and it offers a general framework for handling a variety of cooperative control problems such as consensus, formation, tracking and disturbance rejection. The book strikes a balance between rigorous mathematical proof and engineering practicality. Every design method is systematically presented together with illustrative examples and all the designs are validated by computer simulation. The methods presented are applied to several practical problems, among them the leader-following consensus problem of multiple Euler–Lagrangesystems, attitude synchronization of multiple rigid-body systems, and power regulation of microgrids. This is the second part of our book on continuous statistical distributions. It covers inverse-Gaussian, Birnbaum-Saunders, Pareto, Laplace, central ����², ����, ����, Weibull, Rayleigh, Maxwell, and extreme value distributions. Important properties of these distribution are documented, and most common practical applications are discussed. This book can be used as a reference material for graduate courses in engineering statistics, mathematical statistics, and econometrics. Professionals and practitioners working in various fields will also find some of the chapters to be useful.Although an extensive literature exists on each of these distributions, we were forced to limit the size of each chapter and the number of references given at the end due to the publishing plan of this book that limits its size. Nevertheless, we gratefully acknowledge the contribution of all those authors whose names have been left out.Some knowledge in introductoryalgebra and college calculus is assumed throughout the book. Integration is extensively used in several chapters, and many results discussed in Part I (Chapters 1 to 9) of our book are used in this volume.Chapter 10 is on Inverse Gaussian distribution and its extensions. This book focuses on symmetries in the analysis and synthesis of architectural designs. Crucial in the history of architecture, principles of symmetry provided the means to achieve balance and harmony of spatial composition in architecture. Less well known is the importance of symmetry principles in the analysis of the distinct constituents in a contemporary architectural design which may, at first glance, appear disorganized or even random. The revelation of different hierarchical levels wherein various types of symmetry or subsymmetry are superimposed provides a key for deciphering the underlying structure of spatial logic. The interaction between local and global subsymmetries is of particular interest. Operating with symmetry concepts in this manner offers architects, designers and students an explicit method for understanding the symmetrical logics of sophisticated designs and gaining insights into new designs.This book has two complementary objectives: to explore the fundamental principles of architectural composition founded on the algebraic structure of symmetry groups in mathematics and to apply the principles in the analysis and synthesis of architectural and urban designs. By viewing and decomposing architectural and urban designs in this manner, the hidden spatial logic and underlying order in a design become transparent.

The book provides a summary of the historical evolution of dimensional analysis, and frames the problem of dimensions, systems of units and similarity in a vision dominated by the conventions that formalise even the exact sciences.The first four chapters address the definitions, with few dimensional analysis theorems and similarity criteria. There is also the analysis of self-similarity, both of first and second kind, with a couple of completely solved problems, framed within the group theory. From chapter 5 onward, the focus is on applications in some of the engineering sectors. The number of topics is necessarily limited, but, almost always, there are details, calculations and treatment of assumptions. The book contains descriptions of some of the experimental apparatuses currently used for the realisation of physical models, such as the wind tunnel, the shaking table, the centrifuge, and with the exclusion of many others, which can be found in specialist monographies. Measurementtechniques and instrumentation and statistical data processing is also available in other books. Some more specific notions, required by the context, are reported in the appendix, where appears also the description of numerous dimensionless groups, all of engineering interest, but with the exclusion of many others related to physical processes of electrical nature or physics of particles. A glossary lists the meaning of some specific terms typical of dimensional analysis and used in the book.

In this book, the authors discuss the Mellin-Barnes representation of complex multidimensional integrals. Experiments frontiered by the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN and future collider projects demand the development of computational methods to achieve the theoretical precision required by experimental setups. The purpose of this book is to present the current state of the art of the Virtual Element Method (VEM) by collecting contributions from many of the most active researchers in this field and covering a broad range of topics: from the mathematical foundation to real life computational applications. The book is naturally divided into three parts.
