During the past 20 years, celJ biology has made immense strides which have completely transformed the time-honored morphological hematology of yesterday. This progress is primarily due to the introduction of new techniques which allow functional rather than anatomic studies: labeling techniques have made possible the study of celJ kinetics from birth to death of a celJ: culture techniques (both in vivo and in vitro) have made it possible to establish the progeny of certain stern celJs, their growth poten­ tiaL and the mechanisms of their regulation. The results have been so impressive and have so aroused the enthusiasm 01'young hematologists that it has become fashionable in so me quarters to consider the microscope an'extinct instrument'and morphology littlc more than an outmoded (if agreeable) pastime of little scientific interest. One of the consequences is the wish of some investigators to study cytology without the aid of their eyes. The present book makes us realize once more that morphology is the science of structure and shape and that its aim is not to colJect pictures but to understand them. It is true that microscopic observation, even when made with the electron microscope, cannot by itself answer some basic questions of celJ biology. However, the hematologist who uses only a single technique is like a person who would describe the world from the point of view of a single sensory organ and would refuse the aid of the others.

More than 150 years have passed since involvement of the nervous system in leukemia was first reported by BURNS, while the possibility of the primary brain tumor derived from the lymphoreticular tissue was recognized much later. BAILEY in 1929 described such neoplasms under the term perithelial sarcoma. Later these tumors of the nervous system have been variously designated as'Perivascular of perithelial sarcomas, reticulum cell sarcomas or microgliomas', as controversy has evolved and still exists on the definition of this group of neoplasms and on the nature of their cells of origin. Much of the unfortunate confusion concerning the neoplastic lesions attributed to'microglia'and other derivations of the RE system arose because their close relationship to extra­ neural cells has been ignored. On the other hand, communication in the field of malignant lymphomas has become increasingly difficult because of the termino­ logic maze and conceptual diversities of traditional morphological classifica­ tions that have limited valid comparisons. Although at present we are still far from a precise recognition of the basic features of lymphoproliferative processes and from a fairly general agreement on the terminology of non-Hodgkin lymphomas, there is encouraging evidence recently of some enlightment on the nature of tumor cells that provides the basis for a reasonable and generally acceptable lymphoma classification.

In other words, we had to determine first which hormone protects against which drug, before we could explore how it did this. We had to know first that a hormone has adaptive value before we could ask whether this is due to a syntoxic or a catatoxic mechanism. Such observations, as the fact that an indomethacin-induced intestinal ulcer can be prevented by ethylestrenol, orthat cortisol aggravates certain infections, reveal nothing about how these hormones work; but only findings of this type can tell us where further research would be rewarding. Of course, scientists can rarely identify by direct observation the tbings that they are looking for; most of the time they have to be guided by indirect indices. The ebernist often first detects a compound, or even a particular functional group in its molecule, by inference from a color reaction, a revealing X-ray diffraction pattern or the formation of a characteristic precipitate. The physician must first suspect the presence of a microbe through certain clinical signs and symptoms before he can verify his diagnosis by looking for a particular organism. It is perhaps not too daring to hope that in our first efforts to clarify the role of hormones in resistance, simple, directly visible indicators might also serve us best.

Unabhängig von den biologischen Eigenschaften des Tumorgewebes hat raumforderndes Wachstum am Hirn oder seinen Bedeckungen innerhalb der starren Schädelkapsel besondere Konsequenzen, wie sie sich so unmittelbar und lebensbedrohlich nirgends sonst ergeben können. Diese Tatsachen kennzeichnen die Sonderstellung der intrakraniellen Geschwülste unter den Blastomen. Pathologisch-anatomische und klinische Besonderheiten haben frühzeitig spezielle Untersuchungstechniken erfordert, deren sich meist der Kliniker annahm; oft lag die Bearbeitung also nicht mehr in den Händen der Allgemeinen Pathologie. Diese Ent­ wicklung erfolgte zum Nutzen, aber auch zum Schaden der Sache, ähnlich übrigens, wie in der Gynäkologie. Denn hier wie dort stellte die Klinik besonders geartete Fragen, die vom Pathologen kaum zu beantworten waren, und hier wie dort mußte die Lösung vom allgemeinpathologischen Denken besondere Gefahren mit sich bringen.
