- Abstract
This brief approaches the challenging topic of child sexual abuse from an objective, evidence-based perspective. It offers an overview of child sexual abuse, including definitions and a clear explanation of the epidemiology. The text also explores the conceptual frameworks that seek to explain how a child comes to be sexually abused by an adult or older adolescent. In the chapters, the authors present credible prevalence and incidence studies that are used to provide a scientific response to how common this problem is. In addition, they address the policy implications for a myriad of prevention and treatment initiatives as well as related issues such as delayed reporting and the risk for sexual abuse within child serving organizations. Finally, the brief concludes with the authors'recommendations for the future on how best to prevent child sexual abuse in the first place. Prevention of child sexual abuse is very different than prevention of child physical abuse and neglectand requires a different framework and set of initiatives. Child Sexual Abuse: Current Evidence, Clinical Practice, and Policy Directions is a must-have resource for a range of professionals including healthcare providers, child advocates, clinical social workers, public health officials, mental health providers, and legislative staff professionals. It also is written in a readable manner for members of the lay public.

- Abstract
This unique volume explores issues related to working with children who have nonverbal learning disability (NVLD). It examines how a child's psychology – thoughts, feelings, beliefs – affects his or her functioning and learning. In addition, the book addresses how a child's experiences are processed through individual personality, psychology, culture, environment and economic circumstances, and family dynamics. Using these psychological organizing principles, the book describes how to work most effectively with young patients with NVLD. It offers a new model and definition for understanding NVLD, emphasizing its core deficit of visual-spatial processing. In addition, this book addresses efforts to rename NVLD to developmental visual-spatial disorder (DVSD). It describes the 11 possible subtypes as including a primary deficit in visual-spatial processes and impairment in several additional functional domains, including executive functioning, social/emotional deficits, academic achievement, and motor coordination. The book highlights the need for psychologically minded treatment and provides specific intervention guidelines. It details how to conduct the intake process and create a treatment plan and team and offers practical suggestions for working with a patient's family members. In addition, the book addresses the importance of working with a consistent psychological theory, such as control mastery theory (CMT). It describes the Brooklyn Learning Center Model for treating NVLD and offers guidelines for interventions to support patients academically. The book provides a comprehensive approach to the neuropsychological assessment of NVLD as well as examples of visual-spatial, sensory perception, executive functioning, academics, social/emotional deficits and motor coordination interventions, and all forms used to gather information from patients.Key areas of coverage include:Definition of nonverbal learning disability (NVLD).Efforts toward inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and for renaming it to a developmental visual-spatial disorder (DVSD)Guide to general diagnostic testing and assessment.Developing a treatment plan and team for NVLD patients.NVLD therapy and tutoring priorities.NVLD and Developmental Visual-Spatial Disorder in Children is an essential reference for clinicians, therapists, and other professionals as well as researchers, professors, and graduate students in school and clinical child psychology, special education, speech-language therapy, developmental psychology, pediatrics, social work as well as all interrelated disciplines.

- Abstract
Pediatric Collections offers what you need to know - original, focused research in a snapshot approach. The opioid crisis, fueled by too many prescriptions and too little oversight, has become far more serious than some of the other epidemics the country has faced. The articles in this collection focus on the manifestations of the opioid epidemic in children and adolescents, such as the increased rate of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), teens increased risk of opioid abuse after legitimate opioid use, and the hopeful evidence that sports and exercise participation by adolescents lowers their risk of abusing opioids or heroin. This collection of timely AAP journal articles, blog posts, and policy explores the risks and possible solutions. The collection is structured with the articles grouped under these major topic headings:ExposurePrescribed Use and MisuseTreatment and Prevention

- Abstract
This book aims to provide clinicians and other practitioners and professionals with up-to-date information on how to evaluate and manage headaches in children and adolescents, highlighting the most recent recommendations. Unlike in other books on the subject, detailed attention is devoted to the various comorbidities commonly associated with headache, including psychiatric comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and learning disabilities and medical conditions such as epilepsy, vascular disorders, brain tumors, atopic disease, and obesity. The intimate link between these conditions and headache is explained with a view to enabling the reader to recognize their presence and, on that basis, to institute the most effective pharmacological or non-pharmacological treatment strategy. Moreover, knowledge of the comorbidities associated with headache will help readers to understand more fully the causes of this serious disorder and also its consequences, e.g., for school performance, relationships, and daily activities. The authors are all international experts who care for children with headache or the other described disorders.

- Abstract
'Child development'has always been a traditional component of well child care and a particular area of interest for pediatricians, child neu rologists, and psychologists. However, it was not until the early 1960s that children with developmental disabilities (i. e., chronic handicapping disorders) became a major focus of public and professional attention. During this period, children with'special needs'were dramatically catapulted into the limelight and'exceptional'became the buzzword of the day. Public and professional awareness of these issues reached new peaks and recognition of the potential psychosocial impairments of chil dren with developmental disabilities created national anxiety. A variety of factors contributed to an unprecedented societal advocacy for chil dren with developmental problems: (1) a national concern generated by President Kennedy'S particular interest in mental retardation; (2) in creased activity and visibility of parent advocacy/lobbying groups (e. g., the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities); (3) the enact ment of federal legislation designed to protect the rights of the handi capped (e. g., PL94-142); and (4) the popularization of developmental behavioral disabilities by the various communications media. Cumulatively these events precipitated a redefinition of the real mean ing of'comprehensive health care for children,'resulting in an empha sis on the child's neurodevelopmental, educational, psychological, and social needs. For the pediatrician, a myriad of new management respon sibilities were mandated, in addition to the traditional health care con cerns.
