This book describes how the violent dimension of intergroup relations can be better understood if the interplay between psychological and social-developmental factors is taken into account. Ten unique, innovative and original chapters by international scholars of social and developmental psychology address the way how social reality is constructed as a hierarchical order, and how social norms, beliefs and cognitive-behavioral patterns are learned, shared and repeatedly processed on how to uphold or challenge this social order. Books about sports, even those written by scholars, are frequently little more than hagiography. They extol the virtue of athletics for participant and spectator alike. Of greater rarity are those that look critically at the political, social, economic, and psychological underpinnings of contemporary sports. Violence in sports is among the relatively neglected issues of serious study. Sports Violence is perhaps the first collection of scholarly theory and research to examine in detail aggression within and surrounding sports. As such, it seeks to present the broadest possible range of interpretations and perspectives. The book is, therefore, both interdisciplinary and international in scope. Two chapters, by Guttmann and Vamplew, are concerned with historical analyses of sports violence. Definitions and perspectives on aggression in general, and sports-related aggression in particular, are the topics of Chapters 4 through 7 by Smith, Bredemeier, Mark, Bryant, and Lehman, and Mummendey and Mummendey. Here, a wide variety of social and psychological theories are brought to bear on the conceptualization of aggression on the playing field and in the stands. Dunning and Liischen, both sociologists of sport, examine the origins, structure, and functions of violence, of sports, and of their interconnections. Psychological interpreta­ tions and research are presented in chapters by Russell and Keefer, Goldstein, and Kasiarz, while Bryant and Zillmann examine the portrayal and effects of aggression in televised sports.

Unfortunately violence and aggression seem to have become something endemic to today's world and everyone wonders about the frequency and ease with which people inflict suffering upon others. However, researchers universally bear in mind that there is no single cause of such behavior and its explanation needs a multilevel analysis of its foundations (biological and psychosocial) and manifestations. Topics discussed in this book include a gender perspective of aggression in adolescence; personal predictors of driver aggression in Moscow; the social identity perspective and childhood aggression and the nature and prevention of intimate partner violence.

Aggression is a complex social behavior with multiple causes. In psychology, as well as other social and behavioral sciences, aggression refers to behavior between members of the same species that is intended to cause pain or harm. Aggression takes a variety of forms among humans and can be physical, mental, or verbal. Aggression should not be confused with assertiveness however, although the terms are often used interchangeably. There are two broad categories of aggression. These include hostile, affective, or retaliatory aggression and instrumental, predatory, or goal-oriented aggression. Empirical research indicates that there is a critical difference between the two, both psychologically and physiologically. Some research indicates that people with tendencies toward affective aggression have lower IQs than those with tendencies toward predatory aggression. If only considering physical aggression, males tend to be more aggressive than females. This new book gathers the latest research from around the world in this field.

Aggressives Verhalten zeigt sich of schon früh in der Kindheit. Gilt das auch für das In- resse an Aggression? Als Kind sei ich recht friedlich gewesen, wurde mir erzählt. Doch im Archiv meiner Kindheitsprodukte fanden sich Notizbücher voller aggressiver Zeichnungen: Pistolenhelden und Panzerschlachten. Klammheimlich – oder of enbar – hat mich eines meiner späteren wissenschaf lichen T emen schon früh fasziniert. Oder war es nur eine bei Jungen allgemeine Vorliebe für solche Zeichnungen (Freedman 1976)? Viele Jahre danach führte ich mit mehreren Forschungsgruppen empirische Untersuchungen über Aggression und Gewalt durch: zu Gewalt in Familien (Wahl 1989; 1996), Aggressionen von Jugendlichen und jungen Gewalttätern, insbesondere jener, die ihre Taten fremdenfei- lich und rechtsextrem begründeten (Wahl 1995; 2001; 2002; 2003; Wahl et al. 2001). Dabei konzentrierte ich mich darauf, wie sich aus biotischen, psychischen und sozialen Quellen ab der Kindheit Aggressionspotenziale entwickeln.Mein Interesse galt auch den entscheidenden Phasen in der Lebensgeschichte, in denen mit pädagogischen, sozialen oder therapeutischen Mitteln aggressivem Verhalten vorgebeugt werden kann, und der Frage, wie sich präventive Maßnahmen und Interventionen verbessern lassen (Wahl et al. 2005; Wahl 2007a; Wahl u. Hees 2009; Jung u. Wahl 2008). Diese Untersuchungen waren sehr unterschiedlich angelegt: teils große repräsentative Stichproben und Vollerhebungen mit Tausenden von Fällen, teils intensive Studien an kleineren Stichproben, die zusammen Hunderte von Fällen ausma- ten.

This book is the outgrowth of a memorial conference to honour the scientific contributions of Robert B. Cairns, an internationally recognised interdisciplinary developmental scientist. It is organised around research themes that were an integral part of Dr Cairns'theories and research: neural and developmental plasticity; brain-behaviour bidirectionality; gene-environment interactions. Throughout this book, these themes are linked together by employing animal models and clinical investigations through multiple levels of analysis approach to understanding the origins, development, desistance and prevention of aggression. These studies will add to the compendium of basic knowledge on the developmental psychobiology of aggression and will aid in the ultimate translation of this knowledge to clinical and community settings. This book hopes to foster the legacy of Robert B. Cairns to facilitate the theoretical development and research of a new generation of developmental scientists dedicated to relieving the tragic consequences of aggression on the individual and society.

The chapters in this volume have been written by authors whose research work emphasizes the aggression-eliciting characteristics of people and other animals, the traits that make them targets of aggressive behavior. The clear focus of the book is on aggression by humans, although some of the authors may refer to data from other species. Chapters include aggression and violence towards other species, sexual minorities, psychiatric workers, school children, athletes, women, and drivers on highways. There are additional targets of aggressive behavior which have not been included because they are not emphasised in the research literature of psychology. Since the major concern of psychological science is with the behavior of individuals rather than groups, topics such as racial violence, warfare, and political violence have been specifically excluded.
