This book provides guidelines for using a new approach of resampling the Cs-137 radionuclide tracer which is used to estimate soil erosion rates. The Cs-137 resampling approach will improve significantly the use of the Cs-137 method for assessment of soil erosion, because resampling the radionuclide repeatedly (at least two times, but more sampling campaigns are possible) allows to avoid several methodological difficulties associated with Cs-137 method, namely the problems with small-scale spatial heterogeneity, the question of representativeness of reference site, reference samples, and inappropriate time extent of evaluated period. All these methodological problems are very important for reliability and accuracy of erosion rates estimated by Cs-137 method. If using single sampling approach, the small-scale spatial heterogeneity can be overcome by high number of sampling points, but this is time and labour demanding solution increasing the expenses of the erosion research. The representativeness of reference site is evaluated usually on the basis of expert judgement and knowledge of land use history of studied area, but this approach is often uncertain because the expert judgement can be subjective and the data on land use history is often not sufficient. Further, in many areas an appropriate reference site is not available, what limits the territorial extent of using Cs-137 method. The resampling approach offers its second sampling to be done in a proximate vicinity of the same points sampled during the first sampling campaign. A great advantage is the possibility to decide how long time windows should be investigated. Choosing the time schedule of first and second sampling allows to shorten the time window and adjust it to the study objectives. This is a great improvement of the Cs-137 method, because the time period since the Cs-137 fallout is still growing and thus if using the single sampling approach the results refer to still longer and longer time window(since the Cs-137 fallout until the sampling time), and this period (recently ca 60 years assuming the maximum Cs-137 fallout in 1963) is too long to represent stable land use, because land uses are changing over the time and having the same land use over six decades is rather rare. The improvement of Cs-137 method achieved by resampling approach is significantly contributing to understanding the erosion dynamics and estimating its rates under changing environmental conditions (such as land uses, weather), and it will bring a significant benefit to soil conservation programmes, because Cs-137 method is indispensable for assessing the medium and long term soil erosion rates, and this information is among the basic inputs needed for planning and designing soil conservation measures.

However, due to natural processes and anthropogenic activities, various pollutants have been added to the water system. Among these, fluoride and fluorocarbons (fluorinated carbon) are some of the most serious pollutants. It occurs naturally in several minerals and in trace quantities in water. Due to its characteristics, it is very widely used in medicine, dentistry, industry, or agriculture. Fluoride content in drinking water is very important from health point of view as because it has long been recognized as a constituents of bones, teeth, soft tissues, and body fluids. On the other hand, its universality possesses a real threat to the human body in the form of acute and chronic poisoning. There are reports that excessive fluoride intake for extended period causes adverse effects of health such as fluorosis, cancer, arthritis, and other diseases. Sustainable soil stabilization solutions aim to maintain a perfect balance between infrastructure performance and the social, economic and ecological processes required to sustain human equity, diversity, and the functionality of natural systems. To this end, biopolymers, either chemically synthesized from biological matter or biosynthesized by living organisms, are exhibiting great promise as a financially competitive and green alternative for conventional calcium-based binders. Recent experimental studies have shown that soils stabilized by polysaccharide-type biopolymers, such as xanthan gum (XG), exhibit a variety of promising physical and mechanical treatments, including improved water-retention capacity, reduced compressibility and hydraulic conductivity, enhanced shear strength, and improved resistance against wind/water erosion. Despite these advancements, the existing literature reveals numerous inconsistencies, and a thorough understanding of the behaviour/properties of XG-treated soils under diverse loading and environmental conditions remains somewhat elusive. More importantly, there remains a notable gap in understanding how different factors affect the interactions between XG and various soil types throughout the processes of mixing, curing, and later environmental exposure. This book represents the first of its kind, offering a comprehensive, fundamental overview of the current state of XG usage for sustainable ground improvement, while also identifying future research directions towards addressing existing gaps in knowledge and application.

This book presents a detailed analysis in relation to human health risk assessment of the main toxic chemical pollutants in urban stormwater generated from urban traffic and land use activities. The knowledge presented in this book was derived based on comprehensive experimental investigations including field sampling, laboratory testing, mathematical modelling, spatial analysis and multivariate and univariate statistical data analyses. The key highlights of the book include the quantitative assessment of the human health risk posed by key toxic chemical pollutants in urban stormwater and the development of linkages between risk and traffic and land use. Additionally, a suite of mathematical equations are presented to predict human health risk based on traffic and land use characteristics through mathematical modelling. This volume collects the results from the Politecnico di Milan's award-winning “Boa_Ma_Nhã, Maputo!” research-by-design project, which studied various transdisciplinary approaches to development in the context of the Global South. The challenges of urbanization are well known, but that only goes so far in aiding implementation. From local considerations like water access and housing rights to global issues like climate change, territorial development demands solutions that address the needs of the specific population while keeping such goals as sustainability and inclusion in mind.
