This book presents the findings of a three-year study on urban heat in Doha, Qatar, and discusses guidelines and strategies for planning agencies to consider in the context of moderating temperatures to provide pedestrians with greater access to outdoor spaces and greater choice in modes of transport. If modifying urban form can reduce extreme temperatures in one of the hottest places on the planet, then perhaps other communities can learn how to create livable cities during a time of rapid changes to the climate. In fact, despite the periods of extreme heat, strategic planning and management of urban areas can improve residents'and visitors'ability to live, work, and move throughout the city comfortably. Doha, Qatar, a city with one of the most extreme climates on earth, has undergone rapid development over the past 40 years. Although cities in the Middle East are expanding at three times the international average (UN Report, 2012), the rapid populationand physical growth remain largely unexamined, particularly in terms of the unique conditions, qualities, and characteristics that give rise to these emerging centres. Speed, quality, and extent of urbanization impact neighbourhood-scale environmental conditions, and this book provides evidence that urban forms and materials can help to mediate temporal variation in microclimates and that landscape modifications can potentially reduce temperatures and increase accessibility to outdoor environments. By applying the lessons in this book, communities around the world can better adapt to the increasing frequency, duration and intensity of extreme heat.

This book looks at the New Urban Agenda and prospects of its implementation. In 2016, the New Urban Agenda was endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations after having been adopted by the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) in Quito, Ecuador. Together with the Sustainable Development Goals, it provides a comprehensive and ambitious roadmap for global debate and action related to sustainable urbanisation during the coming decades. As mature economies and ageing societies, Japan and Germany can make considerable contributions to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. Both countries share a number of similar challenges for environmentally sustainable and resilient urban development under conditions of social change. Furthermore, they have vast experience in actively promoting urban transformation towards a more sustainable urban future. At the same time the authors are making a contribution towards implementing the New Urban Agenda. Other countries may build up on the experience provided and the 20 examples described in this book. The work is based on a longstanding cooperation between the Graduate School of Environmental Studies of the Nagoya University (Japan), the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (Germany) and the Technische Universität Dresden (Germany).

Urban heat islands are a new type of microclimatic phenomenon that causes a significant increase in the temperature of cities compared to surrounding areas. The phenomenon has been enforced by the current trend towards climate change. Although experts consider urban heat islands an urgent European Union public health concern, there are too few policies that address it. The EU carried out a project to learn more about this phenomenon through pilot initiatives. The pilots included feasibility studies and strategies for appropriately altering planning rules and governance to tackle the problem of urban heat islands. The pilots were carried out in eight metropolitan areas: Bologna/Modena, Budapest, Ljubljana, Lodz, Prague, Stuttgart, Venice/Padova, and Vienna. The feasibility studies carried out in these pilot areas focused on the specific morphology of EU urban areas, which are often characterised by the presence of historical old towns.

Este livro busca avançar nas dimensões humanas das mudanças ambientais globais, entre elas as mudanças no clima. Desde 2007, vivemos as consequências do 4º Relatório do IPCC com muita intensidade, o que deslocou a questão das mudanças climáticas da periferia para o centro da ciência e da política mundial. Tema de especialistas, a mudança climática global se tornou a principal bandeira/problemática de todo o esforço de discussão sobre ambiente. Neste ano, o relatório do IPCC reforça não apenas a necessidade do estudo das vulnerabilidades e dos impactos das mudanças, mas, sobretudo das ações e processos adaptativos. Para isso, as cidades são, especialmente no Brasil, foco prioritário de preocupação, devido à proporção de pessoas atingidas pelos impactos, e, também pelas articulações de toda a rede urbana e do território nacional. Portanto, uma análise crítica de diversas realidades permitirá pensar em políticas públicas que busquem maior resiliência da população em qualquer contexto urbano. Este livro é resultado de discussões realizadas entre 2010 e 2011 pela Sub-rede Cidades, da Rede Brasileira de Pesquisa sobre Mudanças Climáticas Globais (RedeCLIMA), coordenada pelo Núcleo de Estudos de População da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Nepo/Unicamp). Esta, sob coordenação geral do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), reúne pesquisadores de diversas áreas do conhecimento e de instituições do país, na busca da compreensão das cidades no contexto das mudanças climáticas.
