Oncogenic transcription factors are an increasingly important target for anticancer therapies. Inhibiting these transcription factors could allow tumour cells to be'reprogrammed', leading to apoptosis or differentiation from the malignant phenotype. As the use of kinase inhibitors is gradually declining, transcription factor inhibition is the next hot topic for oncology research and merits much attention. A NATO Advanced Study Institute on'Molecular Mechanisms of Transcellular Signaling: from the Membrane to the Gene'was held on the Island of Spetsai, Greece, from August 15- 27, 1994. The aim of this Institute was to bring together researchers in the field of signal transduction mechanisms, transcription factors and gene regulation with those actively involved in studies on the implications of oxygen radicals and antioxidant defence mechanisms for cell function. As diverse as these fields may be, the emergence of their interconnection during the course of the Institute was an eye-opener for students and lecturers alike. 2 Presentations and discussions focussed on the role of Ca +, G-proteins, protein kinase C and phospholipases in signaling mechanisms. This volume represents the first collection of articles contributed by research leaders working on the Myb family of transcriptional regulatory proteins. In more than twenty chapters the authors discuss the range of biological processes and diverse cell types in which Myb proteins operate. Although concentrating on the three vertebrate Myb family members, homologues from lower species are also discussed because of the light they are able to shed on the evolution and function of these proteins. Individual chapters describe the involvement of Myb proteins, in particular c-Myb, in normal and diseased development and function of many tissues including haemopoietic cells, blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract and the brain.
