The abstract index will greatly facilitate access to quality papers on the subject of nematodes (taxonomy, physiology, morphology and genetics), crop protection research, molecular biology in nematological research, nematode parasites, nematophagous fungi, arthropods and soil free-living nematodes and will be a valuable aid to researchers. This volume is devoted to the memory of the eminent carcinologist Professor Ruiyu Liu (1922-2012) of the Institute of Oceanology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao, China. Since 1949, Professor Liu had devoted his life to studying taxonomy, systematics, ecology, zoogeography and aquaculture and published a total of more than 210 papers and monographs. He described two new genera, fifty-two new species and one new subspecies, including not only crustaceans but also cnidarians, polychaetes and molluscs. In this volume forty of his friends and colleagues put together sixteen papers to honour Professor Liu, and named after him three new genera and eleven new species. This volume honours an outstanding Japanese carcinologist, Masatsune Takeda (National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo, Japan), on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Since 1967, Takeda-sensei (“sensei” is an honourific term for teacher or senior scientist in Japan) has devoted his life to studying the taxonomy of Brachyura and has published 323 papers over a long and illustrious career, and in the process, described 231 new taxa. In this volume, a total of 24 papers have been put together by 40 of his friends and colleagues to honour him. These papers cover a wide diversity of topics on the taxonomy, larval biology, palaeontology and ecology of Brachyura, Caridea, Stenopodidea, Astacidea, Axiidea, Anomura, Amphipoda, Isopoda and Mysida, all groups that Takeda-sensei loved.

This volume is dedicated to the memory of the eminent carcinologist Michael Türkay, of the Research Institute and Natural History Museum Senckenberg, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is a tribute to his outstanding international contribution to the study of decapod crustaceans. An extensive account of Michael's life and achievements is presented, along with thirty-one scientific papers by 62 of his friends and colleagues from around the world. The book's focus is almost entirely on decapod crustaceans, and covers a variety of topics, including taxonomy, systematics, zoogeography, morphology, palaeontology, genetics, general biology and ecology. Numerous new taxa are described from a number of marine and freshwater groups, including one new genus and 13 new species named in honour of Michael himself. The contents of this volume were originally published in 2017 in Crustaceana volume 90, issue 7-10.

Decapods are the largest, most prominent, and, unfortunately, most threatened freshwater crustaceans. This volume contains the Proceedings of The Crustacean Society Summer Meeting held between 20 and 24 September 2009 in Tokyo, Japan. It is the world's premier event on crustacean biology and organized under the auspices of the Carcinological Society of Japan and The Crustacean Society. It reports presentations of plenary keynote addresses, special symposia, and contributed papers given at the meeting, all of which have been peer reviewed and edited. The influence of Bernard Dussart's contributions to limnology in general as well as to freshwater copepodology in particular can hardly be overestimated. From 1945 until his decease late 2008, he has devoted more than 60 years of his life to studying freshwater bodies and their inhabitants. Next to his 200+ scientific papers, his frequent travels brought him all over the world, where he invariably left an inheritage of enhanced interest in problems of freshwater biology and management. The contributions in this book show the progress of research on the Copepoda found in continental waters and in part continue along the lines B. Dussart has set out: a worthy tribute to one of the very nestors of copepodology of fresh waters.

This volume is devoted to the memory of the Dutch carcinologist Lipke Bijdeley Holthuis (1921-2008) who dedicated his life to the taxonomy and systematics of Crustacea. His scientific career started in 1941 with his first publications and continued for 68 years in which he produced over 600 titles totalling almost 13000 pages describing more than 400 taxa new to science. In this volume his friends and colleagues pay tribute to his legacy. Included are an extensive biography and over 50 papers mainly dealing with systematic and taxonomic issues, which emanate from his knowledge and inspiration.

This volume is in honour of Danièle Guinot (Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France), and was born out of our admiration for Danièle's immense contributions to her discipline. She has helped reawaken interest on the systematics of brachyuran decapods crustaceans, the true crabs. Furthermore, she has significantly helped to redefine the study of the complete evolutionary process in crabs. A total of 35 of her colleagues have contributed to this volume, submitting papers on those aspects of the Brachyura to which Danièle, herself, has significantly contributed – taxonomy, evolution, morphology, palaeontology and general biology of crabs. This volume is but a small tribute to a highly respected colleague and friend from the active band of researchers that she has helped so much over the years.

This review of literature includes an introduction on the origin of the olive tree and lists 116 species of insects and 30 species of mites known to infest it. It treats the geographical distribution, host plants, feeding habits, voltinism and seasonal history of 34 species of phytophagous insects as well as of 7 species of mites. Most of these are monophagous or oligophagous and closely associated with the olive tree. Of the species covered, 16 are Homoptera, one Hemiptera, one Thysanoptera, five Coleoptera, four Diptera, seven Lepidoptera, six Eriophyoidea and one Tetranychoidea. The review shows that all species, except one, have a seasonal dormancy and for most of them diapause is certain or reasonably suspected to occur. Seasonal displacement does occur in a number of species, especially shortly before or after dormancy. Differences of opinion on seasonal history between authors are pointed out and conclusions drawn based on the most convincing papers. Suggestions are made for further research on important, yet neglected aspects of the life history of olive arthropods.

Oniscids are wonderful model organisms for studies addressing more general biological questions, and they arguably demonstrate the best evolutionary progression in any extant group of organisms. Their unique properties as terrestrial crustaceans living in a wide range of habitats from coast to desert offer great advantages to study physiological and behavioural adaptations, ecological, phylogenetic, and biogeographical patterns, and evolutionary processes. This first volume of Microlepidoptera of Europe deals with the Pterophoridae of Europe (excluding the former Soviet Union) and the Canary Islands and Madeira. All species occurring in this area are included and most of them illustrated in full colour. All species are briefly redescribed mentioning the main characteristic features of the imagines, and the genital structures. A description of the life cycle is given, and also a note on the distribution. A distribution catalogue has been constructed. It is based on own collection data and verified references. The male and female genitalia are illustrated with line drawings. A checklist of hostplants is given.

Concerns about global biodiversity are rising dramatically, yet we are lagging behind in the most basic prerequisite for its understanding and conservation: the inventory. Insect species may make up five or ten times the number of all other plant and animal species combined, and as such they represent one of the major challenges in biosystematic science. World Catalogue of Insects is an initiative aiming at compiling worldscale, authoritative catalogues of monophyletic insect taxa. We are therefore proud to launch this major series. This volume treats the 157 species of predaceaous diving beetles (Dytiscidae) found in Finland, East Fennoscandia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Baltic States.Introducing chapters provide general information about the state of knowledge and distribution, morphology of adults and larvae, bionomics, collecting and rearing. The main part comprises keys and descriptions for identification of adult beetles, including information on distribution and biology of all species. A catalogue shows provincial records in Fennoscandia and Denmark. The book contains 608 figures and 3 plates.An up-to-date, well illustrated identification manual for the Fennoscandian and Danish Dytiscidae has been wanting for decades. This work is based on the latest advances in synonymy and taxonomy of the family, and on the study of thousands of specimens in collections and field.

Until recently, the system of classification of the Psylloidea was discussed exclusively on the basis of adult morphology. The system proposed by Burckhardt is followed here. With a few exceptions, the illustrations for the present book were prepared by the author. The terminalia of all species (m/f) have been figured. Furthermore, the 5th instar nymphs of nearly all the species have been keyed and figured.For each species, the distribution in and outside Denmark and Fennoscandia is briefly given. Information concerning the Scandinavian countries was compiled from literature and from the author's records based on identifications for museums and private collectors over the last 53 years. Distribution data for outside Fennoscandia and Denmark were derived mainly from Klimaszewski (1973). Information on the biology of the species has been compiled from the literature and from the author's observations.

The present volume presents a detailed account of the taxonomy, biology and distribution of the European species of Siphonini. This group of tachinid Diptera totals 58 species in Europe of which 6 are here described as new to science. In most species, the immatures live as endoparasitolds of lepidopterous larvae, but a few species even attack tipulid larvae. Several species of Siphonini are of great economic interest as agents for the control of lepidopterous and tipulid pests in agriculture and forestry.An analysis and proposal on the systematic position of the Siphonini is given together with a key to larger taxonomic entities of Tachinidae. The generic classification is also critically emphasized. A separate chapter summarizes aspects of the group's natural history: life-cycles, mating behaviour, oviposition strategies, etc. The taxonomic part contains identification keys to genera and species, and for each species a diagnosis, a description and accounts on the nomenclature, biology and distribution is given. A separate catalogue details the provincial distribution of the 47 species occurring in Fennoscandia and Danmark. No less than 275 line drawings and 15 colour illustrations accompany the text.

The Dorylaimida represent a large and very important group of soil and freshwater inhabiting nematodes of great agricultural importance. Both in appearance and mode of life they represent a wide diversity and as a consequence the number of species and higher taxa that have been described hitherto is the highest within Nematoda. The identification of species, genera, families, etc. of Dorylaimida is very difficult and at times causes problems for the specialist too. The large number of species on the one hand and often the meagre descriptions on the other make even well-known taxonomists to look at Dorylaimida with great hesitation and desperation.M. Shamim Jairajpuri and Wasim Ahmad have undertaken a great task in summarizing, evaluating and systematizing all the knowledge that has been published so far.

This work is the third of a projected group of six volumes on Empidoidea (Diptera, Brachycera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark, and the first concerning the true Empididae, the dance flies, of the taxonomically difficult genus Empis.In total, 64 species and 11 subgenera are treated, including the faunas of Great Britain and the Netherlands. Each subgenus is briefly characterized, with data on phylogeny, distribution, biology, and number of species. The species are fully described and differential characters are illustrated, including the male genitalia. Data are provided for occurrence and distribution, and epigamic and swarming behaviour are reviewed.The Empididae (Diptera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark will serve not only dipterists, but also taxonomists and museologists. The Quarrel over Swammerdam's Posthumous Works reconstructs the vicissitudes of Johannes Swammerdam's Biblia naturae, a pivotal collection of writings in the history of science. Bequeathed to the polymath Melchisédech Thévenot, the manuscripts and drawings of the treatises constituting this collection were instead kept by the editor Hermann Wingendorp after Swammerdam's death (1680), triggering a quarrel over their publication. By analysing Swammerdam's scientific legacy and by offering an edition of the correspondence testifying to the efforts towards such publication, this book sheds light on the editorial history and intellectual context of Swammerdam's Biblia. This reveals not only an intricate plot of authorized and unauthorized attempts to publish it, but also an exchange of scientific texts and instruments in the late seventeenth century.
