A prominent issue in many contemporary philosophy of religion debates concerns whether the universe has a Designer. This book moves the discussion ahead in a significant way by devising an original deductive formulation of the Teleological Argument (TA) which demonstrates that the following are the only possible categories of hypotheses concerning fine-tuning and order: (i) chance, (ii) regularity, (iii) combinations of regularity and chance, (iv) uncaused, and (v) design. This book also demonstrates that there are essential features of each category such that, while the alternatives to design are unlikely, the Design Hypothesis is not, and that one can argue for design by exclusion without having to first assign a prior probability for design. By combining the TA with the Kalam Cosmological Argument (KCA) which it defends against various objections, this book responds to the God-of-the-gaps objection by demonstrating that the conclusion of the KCA-TA is not based on gaps which can be filled by further scientific progress, but follows from deduction and exclusion.This is an open access book.

Andrew Steane reconfigures the public understanding of science, by drawing on a deep knowledge of physics and by bringing in mainstream philosophy of science. Science is a beautiful, multi-lingual network of ideas; it is not a ladder in which ideas at one level make those at another level redundant. In view of this, we can judge that the natural world is not so much a machine as a meeting-place. In particular, people can only be correctly understood by meeting with them at the level of their entire personhood, in a reciprocal, respectful engagement as one person to another. Steane shows that Darwinian evolution does not overturn this but rather is the process whereby such truths came to be discovered and expressed in the world. From here the argument moves towards other aspects of human life. Our sense of value requires from us a response which is not altogether the same as following logical argument. The book finishes with some brief chapters setting religion in the context of all human capacities, and showing, in fresh language, what theistic religious response is, or can be, in the modern world.

The notion of divine action – which claims that God, Creator of the world, is actively involved in his creation and acts in history – is central to Christian faith and experience. The remarkable success of modern science since the seventeenth-century, followed by the new philosophy of the eighteenth, started a process of undermining of that notion, whose consequences are still present nowadays either in theological circles, or in contemporary debates of science and religion. We notice a widespread rejection of the concept of “divine interference” in natural processes and a pervasive belief that many events designated as “mighty acts of God” can either be explained scientifically, or dismissed as non-historical literary creations. In other words, it seems that the traditional notion of divine actions runs counter to the “scientific authority,” which considers it an impossible “violation of the laws of nature.” The discoveries of contemporary science on emergent systemic properties in complex systems, downward causality, and indeterminism, encouraged, in recent decades, new attempts to search for divine action inside quantum and chaotic physical processes, in which God was seen either as “determiner of indeterminacies” or as “communicator of active information.” Although these approaches represent a remarkable endeavor in putting together divine action and contemporary science, nevertheless, they reveal scientific problems and philosophical and theological difficulties. We claim that those problems are rooted in the concept of causality they use. We suggest that to articulate the notion of divine action and the laws of nature we should enlarge the concept of causality, in accordance with what contemporary science itself is pointing out. The purpose of this monographic study, then, is to investigate in what ways belief in divine action can be held in theology without conflicting with the laws of nature, so that that belief might be a credible and useful notion in the dialogue between science and religion.

Historically speaking, theology can be said to operate “materiaphobically.” Protestant Christianity in particular has bestowed upon theology a privilege of the soul over the body and belief over practice, in line with the distinction between a disembodied God and the inanimate world “He” created. Like all other human, social, and natural sciences, religious studies imported these theological dualisms into a purportedly secular modernity, mapping them furthermore onto the distinction between a rational, “enlightened” Europe on the one hand and a variously emotional, “primitive,” and “animist” non-Europe on the other. The “new materialisms” currently coursing through cultural, feminist, political, and queer theories seek to displace human privilege by attending to the agency of matter itself. Far from being passive or inert, they show us that matter acts, creates, destroys, and transforms—and, as such, is more of a process than a thing. Entangled Worlds examines the intersections of religion and new and old materialisms. In the 17th century Sir Francis Bacon advocated the patient study of Nature for the benefit of mankind. Most of science today, in its study of medicine, genetics, electronics etc., continues that pragmatic Baconian tradition without fuss. Over the years, however, as its investigation of Nature probed ever deeper into regions far removed from common experience, science has increasingly exhibited traits more usually associated with fundamentalist religion that with dispassionate study. Articulate voices from biology preach the belief in 18th century materialism in the study of evolution; those from physics promulgate a kind of mathematical theology in its study of elementary particles and cosmology; both inveigh against heresy. But science should be beyond that sort of belief.
