This handbook articulates how sociology can re-engage its roots as the scientific study of human moral systems, actions, and interpretation. This book studies children's wellbeing from the perspective of Ethiopian immigrant families in Israel. It examines how the meeting of cultures within families affects relationships, language acquisition and the transmission of cultural heritage across generations after immigration. The younger generation, born in Israel or having arrived as infants, are faced with a reality very different from their parent's childhood in Ethiopia. The book therefore addresses these key questions: What are the differences between families that enable some children to adopt a hybrid identity while others feel detached? How are the children affected by their experiences in Israeli society and specifically the educational system? What factors in their childhoods foster resilience and how do these children relate to their Ethiopian heritage? The book presents unique insights into the realities experienced by immigrant families using their own narratives, as it is based oninterviews by the author with 50 members of immigrant families from different generations. It is of special interest to academic courses on wellbeing, family studies, immigrants, diaspora studies, ethnic and religious studies, anthropology, folklore, sociology, gender studies, social work, child psychology and more.

This book analyses how children from transnational Japanese-Singaporean families are educated. Scrupulously based in anthropology and history – and drawing on social theory and critical thought – this book revisits the disciplines, archives, and subjects of modernity. There are at least three interleaving emphases here. To begin with, the work rethinks institutionalized formations of anthropology and history – together with'archives'at large – as themselves intimating disciplines of modernity. Understood in the widest senses of the terms, these disciplines are constitutively contradictory. Moreover, the study interrupts familiar projections of modern subjects as molded a priori by a disenchanted calculus of interest and reason. It tracks instead the affective, embodied, and immanent attributes of our varied worlds as formative of subjects of modernity, sown into their substance and spirit. Finally, running through the book is a querying of entitlement and privilege that underlie social terrains and their scholarly apprehensions – articulating at once distinct elites, pervasive plutocracies, and modern'scholasticisms.'

This book presents a sociological perspective on (non-)sexual intimate relationships in contemporary Japan. The phenomenon of sexlessness in intimate relationships has gained increasing attention in popular culture. However, few scholarly investigations exist in examining this striking trend in Japan. This book presents an analysis of the socio-structural elements within both academic and public discourses in Japanese culture relating to sexlessness in intimate relationships. Drawing from original interview research, the author provides insights into individuals'experiences and investigates the connection between sexual inactivity, sexuality and Japanese couples'satisfaction and well-being in their relationships. The book discusses how work environment, childbirth, infertility treatments, as well as past sexual experiences, extramarital affairs, and both unmarried and married couple relationships influence individual sexual behavior and consciousness. A broad overview of the meaning of sexuality through a cultural comparison with discourses on sexuality and interview results in Germany and Austria is also provided. To this end, the book calls into question whether sexlessness is a unique Japanese phenomenon or whether parallels and similarities might also be found in Western societies. Bringing together academic and public discourses on sexless couples, this book engages a rethinking of the meaning of sexuality, love, intimacy and relationships, both in and outside of Japan. It is of interest to students and scholars of Japanese studies, gender, sexology and sociology.

Ähnlich den Gender Studies oder Queer Studies handelt es sich bei den Disability Studies um einen Ansatz, der eine emanzipatorische Zielrichtung verfolgt. Das Handbuch führt in den internationalen Diskurs ein und bietet einen fundierten Überblick über die Entwicklung, Grundlagen und Debatten der deutschsprachigen Disability Studies. In 1962 Norbert Elias was invited as a temporary professor at the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra. He taught, employed fieldwork, travelled, and met many people in postcolonial Africa. When Elias left Ghana in 1964, he had laid the basic groundwork for a fundamental sociological argument on human societies.The volume on hand is a selection of his unpublished writings based on these experiences. Together they touch upon not only the well-known criticism of Eurocentrism and a developmental perspective but also what could be considered the core of Elias's work: the concept of civilisation. In a foreword, Dieter Reicher and Adrian Jitschin have endeavoured to explain and break down the relations of Elias's African experience to the rest of his work and biography. They also clarified some misleading interpretations of Elias's time in Africa. Finally, Arjan Post has uncovered the previously unknown fascinating story of Elias'encounter with Malcolm X in an epilogue.

Few concepts are as central to sociology as institutions. Yet, like so many sociological concepts, institutions remain vaguely defined. This book expands a foundational definition of the institution, one which locates them as the basic building blocks of human societies—as structural and cultural machines for survival that make it possible to pass precious knowledge from one generation to the next, ensuring the survival of our species. The book extends this classic tradition by, first, applying advances in biological evolution, neuroscience, and primatology to explain the origins of human societies and, in particular, the first institutional sphere: kinship. This volume provides a unique perspective on elderly working-class West Indian migrants in the UK, particularly examining how they negotiate their sense of belonging. Utilizing the life span gaze and including elements of oral history and narrative, this ethnography provides rich insight into the ordinary lives, migratory circumstances, social networks, and interactions with the state as residents in a sheltered housing scheme in Brixton, London. The author further compiles a variety of genealogy charts, providing a uniquely vivid scholarly analysis of the Caribbean migrant experience both in a “place” and through space and time. Ultimately, this work contemplates how communities face change whilst at once developing a local symbolic cultural site, navigating adaptation to new economic and social environments.

Die Aufsätze in diesem Band verbinden eine Kulturtheorie vom Bourdieu‘schen Typ mit Grundgedanken der Arbeiten von Jacques Lacan. Die mit dem Habitus gegebene Bindung der Subjekte an eine kollektive Wirklichkeitsdeutung, also was Bourdieu unter dem Begriff der Inkorporation fasst, wird hier nicht als selbstverständlich gegeben genommen, sondern problematisiert. Es geht also um die Frage, mit welchen Verfahren es einer Kultur gelingt, die Verbindung der Subjekte mit einer gemeinsamen Welt herzustellen. Lacans Begriffe des Symbolischen und des Imaginären als Modi der Identifikation werden für die Analyse dieser Verfahren fruchtbar gemacht. So wird gezeigt, wie unterschiedliche Typen der Bindungsherstellung verschiedene kulturelle Formationen, Menschentypen und Weltbezüge hervorbringen. Einige Aufsätze behandeln theoretische Aspekte dieser Problematik, andere wiederum beschreiben einzelne kulturelle Bereiche als Konstrukte auf der Basis der verschiedenen Verfahren der Herstellung von Bindung und Begehren. Care of the State blends archival, oral history, interview and ethnographic data to study the changing relationships and kinship ties of children who lived in state residential care in socialist Hungary. It advances anthropological understanding of kinship and the workings of the state by exploring how various state actors and practices shaped kin ties. Jennifer Rasell shows that norms and processes in the Hungarian welfare system placed symbolic weight on nuclear families whilst restricting and devaluing other possible ties for children in care, in particular to siblings, friends, welfare workers and wider communities. In focussing on care practices both within and outside kin relations, Rasell shows that children valued relationships that were produced through personal attention, engagement and emotional connections. Highlighting the diversity of experiences in state care in socialist Hungary, this book's nuanced insights represent an important contribution to research on children's well-being and family policies in Central-Eastern Europe and beyond.

This book offers a comparative study of the lives of young adult women and their mothers in Hong Kong and Britain. Exploring An t-Oileánach (anglicised as The Islandman), an indigenous Irish-language memoir written by Tomás Ó Criomhthain (Tomás O'Crohan), Máiréad Nic Craith charts the development of Ó Criomhthain as an author; the writing, illustration, and publication of the memoir in Irish; and the reaction to its portrayal of an authentic, Gaelic lifestyle in Ireland. As she probes the appeal of an island fisherman's century-old life-story to readers in several languages—considering the memoir's global reception in human, literary and artistic terms—Nic Craith uncovers the indelible marks of Ó Criomhthain's writing closer to home: the Blasket Island Interpretive Centre, which seeks to institutionalize the experience evoked by the memoir, and a widespread writerly habit amongst the diasporic population of the Island. Through the overlapping frames of literary analysis, archival work, interviews, and ethnographic examination, nostalgia emerges and re-emerges as a central theme, expressed in different ways by the young Irish state, by Irish-American descendants of Blasket Islanders in the US today, by anthropologists, and beyond.

Aydın Süer befasst sich mit dem historischen Narrativ vom Niedergang des Osmanischen Reiches, welches den Blick osmanischer und türkischer Eliten auf sich selbst und auf Europa bis heute maßgeblich beeinflusst hat. Dazu untersucht der Autor Reiseberichte, die als Folge einer ab dem 18. Jahrhundert zunehmenden Reisetätigkeit von Osmanen nach Europa entstanden sind. Kennzeichnend für alle Reiseberichte ist, dass sie die Berichterstattung über Europa auf auffällige Weise und häufig in den Dienst einer Kritik an der eigenen Gesellschaft stellen. Damit erzeugen und verstärken sie nach und nach das Bild von einem im Aufstieg begriffenen Europa, demgegenüber das Osmanische Reich zumindest potenziell einer Gefahr des Untergangs ausgesetzt ist. Es ist hier gerade die Wahrnehmung, Darstellung und Deutung einer unmittelbar erlebten fremden Wirklichkeit, die bei den Autoren der Reiseberichte zugleich eine Reflexion darüber auslöst, was das Eigene und das Fremde ausmacht.

Die Theorie der Gesellschaft muss neu verhandelt werden. Es gibt unseres Wissens keine Theorie, die ihren Bildungsprozess aus der Evolution herausführt, um hernach ihrer Entwicklung in der Geschichte zu folgen. Exakt darum geht es in diesem Band. Die von ihr bewirkten hierarchischen Strukturen waren in Häuptlingstümern und Big-man-Gesellschaften noch moderat, mit der Ausbildung von Herrschaft und Staat in den frühen Hochkulturen verlieren die der Herrschaft unterworfenen Subjekte Selbstbestimmung und Freiheit. Gerechtigkeit als Widerspruch gegen den Zugriff der Potentaten auf die Lebensformen der Subjekte wurde dadurch unter der Schwelle des Bewusstseins gehalten, dass Herrschaft einem Absoluten am Grunde der Welt zugeschrieben wurde und von Gott verordnet galt. Phasen des Widerstandes wurden durch das Machtpotential der Herrschaft ebenso unterdrückt, wie durch die Logik des Denkens im Ausgang von einem Absoluten. Auch noch in der Antike wurde Gerechtigkeit einem Absoluten zugeschrieben: Geist, der auf die Idee des Guten konvergierte. Nach dem Umbruch der Logik in der Neuzeit richtet sich das Postulat der Gerechtigkeit auf die Organisationsformen der Gesellschaft. The Lost Ethnographies reports on the methodological lessons learnt from ethnographic projects that, viewed superficially, failed. Experienced researchers write about projects they planned, and were excited about, which then never began, had to be abandoned, or took such unexpected directions that it became a different piece of work altogether. The topics and settings are varied and disparate, but the lessons learnt have important similarities. This collection focuses on absences; topics and settings that remain under researched; taken for granted aspects of social life that have not been scrutinized, and finally the potential insights that are gained when absences are carefully examined and explored. Readers will learn a great deal about research design, fundraising, writing up, access negotiations, serendipity in the field, and the complex interaction between the body and the brain of the ethnographer and the realities of ethnographic research. Maximising learning from the ‘failings'of ourselves and of others is the positive message of the collection. The most poignant chapters are those in which the author ‘returns'to reread and reflect on a past project; something that is not done often enough, partly because it can be painful. The accounts of projects which had to be abandoned or radically changed offer hope to researchers facing difficulties in their own investigations. These reflections, on projects that were never even begun, show how to gain fresh energy and social science insight from apparent rejection, and the collection approaches the whole concept of lost ethnography in provocative ways.

Teilhabe ist einerseits an die Phylogenese der Art Sapiens rückgebunden, muss andererseits aber von jedem Menschen in der Ontogenese neu erworben und praktiziert werden, wobei er auf Umwelt angewiesen ist. Teilhabe im Alter ist eine eigene Spezifikation der Bedingungen dieses Prozesses und lässt sich anhand einer Vielzahl von empirischen Befunden darstellen.

Über Liebe vollends scheint sich wissenschaftlich nahezu nichts sagen zu lassen. Es gibt jedoch einen Befund, der zu denken geben muss: Durch die Geschichte hin hat sich eine spezifisch humane Geschlechterbeziehung gebildet; in allen Gesellschaften haben Menschen gesucht, ihre Leben in der Körperzone eines anderen zu führen, zumeist eines anderen des anderen Geschlechts. Es gibt eindrückliche Berichte dieser Beziehung, von der schieren Existenz des anderen überwältigen worden zu sein, und keineswegs war dafür nur Sexualität der Grund. Warum gibt es diese Form der Verbindung zwischen den Geschlechtern? Dux zögert nicht, die vielfältigen Formen, in denen sie sich ausgebildet hat, Liebe zu nennen. Von der romantischen Form ihrer Ausprägung sagt er ohnehin, dass es sie nicht länger gebe, nachdem die Welt eine andere geworden sei. Es geht ihm nicht um das, was Liebe meint, so eindrückliche literarische Bestimmungen in den Text eingegangen sind, es geht ihm um das Warum. Warum gibt es das: Liebe? Das ist die Frage, die eine Antwort finden soll.

Durch die Jahrhunderte und die Jahrtausende zieht sich die Spur der Macht im Verhältnis der Geschlechter. Durch sie sind bedeutsame Möglichkeiten des Daseins unterdrückt und zunichte gemacht worden. Denn wir müssen davon ausgehen, dass zu allen Zeiten und in allen Gesellschaften die Intimität der frühen Kindheit in das Verhältnis der Geschlechter überführt und von dem Verlangen bestimmt wurde, deren Leben einander zu verbinden.
