Scene affiliations can be understood as socially produced and meaningful commonalities of action in style-specific practices. They are displayed, staged, stabilized, and disseminated in the respective style formations via material artifacts and their use, the body, and media forms of expression. Although the importance of artefacts, bodies and media for stylisation processes is continuously emphasised within youth culture and scene research, the systematic analysis of the material and medial dimensions of youth cultural action beyond the description of respective styles rarely comes into focus. Based on this observation, this volume aims to explore the question of which theoretical and methodological perspectives interdisciplinary youth culture and scene research can use to adequately understand the material and medial expressions of styles. Postkoloniale Ansätze in der Ethnologie zeichnen sich durch eine kritische Reflexion der eigenen Wissenschaftsgeschichte aus und denken dabei theoretische und methodologische Ansätze des Faches weiter. Sie laden dazu ein, sich kritisch mit der Verstrickung der Disziplin in koloniale Prozesse und der Aufrechterhaltung von ungleichen Machtstrukturen auseinanderzusetzen. Postkoloniale Ansätze hinterfragen die Autorität ethnologischer Wissenskonstruktion und die damit verbundene Repräsentation des kulturell „Anderen“ sowie des „Eigenen“. Darüber hinaus lenkt eine postkoloniale Ethnologie den Blick auf transkulturelle Verflechtungen, etwa lokale Interpretationen globaler Symbole und Praktiken. The purpose of this book is to publish research about the people, behaviors, heritage, and potential tourism of Socotra. The Socotra Archipelago has long been a land of mystery. It is unknown as a tourism destination for many, however, is a popular destination for adventurers, photographers and travelers who like to travel to remote and undeveloped places. This book explains how Socotra has limited resources of electricity, which is provided by diesel generators, Internet is very slow and limited to certain points on the island. There are no shopping malls or five-star hotels. Roads, schools, and hospitals have been built only recently. This book shoes how these island people do not know the development as we do, which makes it principally interesting to research. Previous interviewers of Socotri people about tourism development in the island have faced many challenges such as language barriers, lack of understanding the meanings and interviewing content, lack of support for the anticipated research results. This book successfully undertakes this challenge as not only in understanding the language, but understanding phenomena like e.g. tourism. Whilst acknowledging the ways in which indigenous island people have never travelled orseen a developed city. Thus, words like ‘developed', ‘tourism destination'or ‘washing machine'may be unfamiliar terms for them. Therefore, new and innovative research methods that are sensitive to Socotra people were implemented in the creation of this book.

This is the first book to shed light on the growing presence, influence and expansion of China in the daily life of Argentina. While most previous academic studies focus on the geopolitical and macroeconomics dimensions of the relations between Argentina and China, this book shows at a micro-social level the multiple facets of the economic, political and social influence of China in Argentina. The book presents ethnographic studies of encounters of actors and negotiation of identities from Argentina and China in companies, schools, restaurants, hospitals, districts, public and private institutions in Argentina. Themes discussed in the ethnographies include: identity struggle and strategic uses of culture in Buenos Aires's Chinatown; teaching Chinese as the first foreign language or teaching it as a heritage language in a bilingual school; the contested production of images of Chinese authenticity in Chinese restaurants; the connections and contestations between so-called “Western medicine” and so-called “Chinese Traditional Medicine”; and the conflictive relations between Chinese expatriate bosses of Chinese state-owned enterprises and their Argentinean employees.

In diesem Buch wird eine Ethnografie des Selbst vorgelegt, die anhand gegenwärtiger spiritueller Praktiken im Libanon durch eine bestimmte Emotionskultur verkörpert wird. Es erzählt von einer radikalen Subjektivierung, die als Teil und Effekt gesellschaftlicher Transformationsprozesse bewertet wird. Selbstkenntnis, Selbstwissen und Selbstartikulation werden als eine genuine Erfahrung des Islams gelesen und zugleich als Ausdruck einer inneren Beziehung zur Konsumkultur: Praktiken der Optimierung, Kultivierung, Kontrolle und Inszenierung des Selbst dienen dem Ausdruck eines symbolischen Kampfes um die Darstellung sozialer Positionen. Das Buch zeichnet damit im Detail nach, inwiefern Subjekte neben einer Innenorientierung immer auch eine Beziehung zu etwas außerhalb des Selbst herstellen. Der Titel, Das Soziale im Selbstbezug, verweist damit auf das, was die Subjekte in ihrem Bestreben, sich primär auf sich selbst zu beziehen, eigentlich zusammenhält.

Ethnographie setzt an der empirischen Erforschung von sozialem Handeln, Lebenswelten, Praktiken, institutionellen Kontexten und kulturellen Orientierungen durch Beobachtung, Ko-Präsenz, längerfristige Teilnahme und Teilhabe an dem zu untersuchenden Feld an. Ihre Ursprünge liegen in der Ethnologie und im Journalismus. Die in den 1910er bis zu den 1930er Jahren durchgeführten Studien der Chicago School haben beide Verfahrensansätze aufgegriffen, um die Dynamik und die zunehmende Unübersichtlichkeit gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeit beschreiben zu können. Dies hat zur Entstehung einer soziologischen Ethnographie geführt, die ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf soziale und kulturelle Differenzierungen in der je eigenen Gesellschaft richtet.Ziel und Anliegen des Handbuches ist es, einen systematischen Überblick über Ausgangslagen, zentrale Ansätze, Debatten und Ausdifferenzierungen von soziologischer Ethnographie als Forschungsweise zu geben und zugleich die Entfaltung ethnographischer Forschung von ihren historischen Anfängen und Grundlegungen Ende des 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über Weiterentwicklungen in den 1960er Jahren, entscheidende Weichenstellungen in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren bis hin zu ihrer gegenwärtigen Vielgestaltigkeit nachzuzeichnen.

Jäger- und Sammlergesellschaften sind weltweit mit rapidem Wandel konfrontiert. Sie stehen unter dem Druck sesshaft zu werden, ihre traditionelle Subsistenz aufzugeben und sich in moderne Nationalstaaten und Marktwirtschaften zu integrieren. Doch trotz all dieser Einflüsse erweisen sich eine Vielzahl von sozialen und kulturellen Strukturen als sehr widerstandsfähig im Wandel und bilden einen Rahmen für Veränderungen. Am Beispiel der!Xun San in der noch jungen, aber aufstrebenden Stadt Nkurenkuru im Norden Namibias an der Grenze zu Angola zeigt diese Arbeit, wie sich ehemalige Jäger und Sammler in der modernen Welt behaupten. Statt sie allein als hilflose Opfer höherer politisch-ökonomischer Kräfte darzustellen, stehen ihre Handlungs- und Entscheidungsspielräume im Vordergrund. Mit einem Fokus auf Austauschbeziehungen innerhalb der!Xun San-Gemeinschaften sowie zwischen!Xun San und benachbarten Gruppen wird gezeigt, dass sich Prozesse der Kontinuität und Anpassung nicht ausschließen, sondern sich gegenseitig bedingen.
