Sie geben damit Einblick in das historische Gewordensein der Kultur der Soziologie, so wie sie von Soziolog•innen je im Einzelfall verstanden und praktiziert wurde und – durch Anschlüsse wie Ausschlüsse gleichermaßen – wiederum als Nach- und Weitererzählungen in das disziplinäre Gedächtnis eingeht.

This book has a rather long-winding history. It is not like anything else the present author ever wrote, as all the rest is theoretical economics in a d- tinctively mathematical dress. For the emergence of the following pages, there are several people, - cept the author, who are to have the credit, or perhaps the blame. Around 1985, the department of economics at Umeå University in the North of S- den was visited by Professor William Hendon, Editor of the Journal of C- tural Economics. In my capacity of chairman of the department I invited him to a social lunch. We soon realized that we did not have much in terms of common research interests to talk about. However, somebody at the - partment later informed him that I also used to make copies of historical musical instruments during my free hours, so, once back in the US, he asked me to write an article for his journal, comparing the making of mathematical models to the making musical instruments. I thought the idea was absolutely crazy, but could not help start thinking about it now and then, so five years later I actually contributed a paper called'On the unity of the arts, crafts, and sciences'.

This volume offers a cross-section of a good fifteen years of research in the sociology of technology and innovation at the Department of Sociology of Technology headed by Werner Rammert at the TU Berlin. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes sind in der einen oder anderen Weise von zwei Begriffen aus dem Arsenal der soziologischen Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns und speziell seiner Organisationssoziologie inspiriert: dem Begriff der Grenzstelle und dem Begriff des Grenzsystems. Mit dem Begriff der Grenzstelle werden Abgesandte von Organisationen bezeichnet, die im Dienste von deren Zwecken und Bestandsinteressen auf eine relevante Gruppe von Nichtmitgliedern einwirken sollen, also etwa als Verkäufer auf Kunden oder als Pressesprecher auf Journalisten, und Grenzsysteme sind die aus diesem Anlass gebildeten Interaktionen, also etwa das Verkaufsgespräch oder die Pressekonferenz. Die Aufsätze behandeln unter anderem die Grenzstellen des Gesprächsleiters in der polizeilichen Vernehmung, des Diplomaten, des Verkäufers in seiner Nebenrolle als Aggressionsobjekt wütender Kunden, und zu den behandelten Grenzsystemen gehören Interaktionen wie Wohnungsbesichtigung und Vernehmung, Rettungseinsatz und Gerichtsverfahren.

In diesem Buch wird das Verständnis von Interkulturalität und interkultureller Kompetenz bei einem Automobilkonzern erforscht. Dafür wurden Experteninterviews mit Führungskräften des gehobenen Managements durchgeführt. Die Interviews wurden mit der Qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Udo Kuckartz und der Objektiven Hermeneutik nach Ulrich Oevermann ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden qualitativ-empirischen Studie zeigen, dass Interkulturalität und interkulturelle Kompetenz innerhalb des Organisationskontextes vom Führungspersonal unterschiedlich ausgelegt und gehandhabt werden. Aus dem empirischen Material wird in Fallanalysen und -vergleichen eine qualitative Typologie mit vier kulturbezogenen Grundorientierungen herausgearbeitet.

Postkoloniale Ansätze in der Ethnologie zeichnen sich durch eine kritische Reflexion der eigenen Wissenschaftsgeschichte aus und denken dabei theoretische und methodologische Ansätze des Faches weiter. Sie laden dazu ein, sich kritisch mit der Verstrickung der Disziplin in koloniale Prozesse und der Aufrechterhaltung von ungleichen Machtstrukturen auseinanderzusetzen. Postkoloniale Ansätze hinterfragen die Autorität ethnologischer Wissenskonstruktion und die damit verbundene Repräsentation des kulturell „Anderen“ sowie des „Eigenen“. Darüber hinaus lenkt eine postkoloniale Ethnologie den Blick auf transkulturelle Verflechtungen, etwa lokale Interpretationen globaler Symbole und Praktiken. Damit destabilisiert sie vermeintlich „universale“ Erklärungsmuster und Konzepte, verortet sie in Zeit und Raum.Die Beiträge in diesem, Judith Schlehe gewidmeten Sammelband veranschaulichen, welche fruchtbaren Implikationen ein postkolonialer Impetus für die ethnologische Forschung, Theorie und Praxis bereithalten kann. Angelehnt an die von Judith Schlehe entwickelte „Tandem“-Forschung stellen die AutorInnen in ihren eigenen Studien kollaborative und kulturell reziproke Prozesse vor. Caribbean countries have had to navigate multiple crises, which have tested their collective resolve through time. In this regard, the region's landscape has been shaped by an interplay of vulnerability and resilience which has brought to the fore possibilities and contradictions. It is within this context that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic must be considered. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on COVID-19 and the Caribbean, Volume 2: Society, Education and Human Behaviour provides a comprehensive, multi- and interdisciplinary assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, using the Caribbean as the site of enquiry. The edited collection mobilises critical perspectives brought to bear on research produced within and beyond the boundaries and boundedness of conventional academic disciplinary divides, in response to the multi-dimensional crises of our time. Cities are synonymous with the production and consumption of culture. It is their material and human cultural infrastructure that also makes them archives and works of art. The Cultural Infrastructure of Cities critically re-examines the relationship between the urban and its cultures. It expands our understanding of the concept of urban cultural infrastructure and highlights the foundational role of culture to the materiality and sociality of urban life and the governance of cities. Im chinesischen Diskurs dagegen finden andere Kernbegriffe wie z.B. „Tianxia“ Verwendung, die im nicht-chinesischen Kontext einer Interpretation bedürfen. Um der Differenz – aber auch den Gemeinsamkeiten – auf den Grund zu gehen, untersuchen Wissenschaftler•innen und Praktiker•innen aus China und Deutschland Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmungen sowie Kooperationen in kulturellen Begegnungen. This Palgrave Pivot strives to recount and understand Indigenous Law, as set within a remote community in northern Australia. It pays close attention to the realpolitik and high-level political functioning of Indigenous Laws, which inspires a discussion of how this Law models the relational, influences governance and emplaces people in an ordered kincentric lifeworld. The book argues that Indigenous Law can be examined for the ways in which it is a deliberate, stabilizing and powerful force to maintain communal order in relation to Country, a counter framing to popular and ‘soft law or soft power asset'visions of such Laws often held in the national and international imaginary. It is the latter which too often renders this knowledge esoteric and relinquishes it to a category of lore or folklore. This is an open access book.

This thoughtful and wide-ranging open access volume explores the forces and issues shaping and defining contemporary identities and everyday life in Brunei Darussalam. It is a subject that until now has received comparatively limited attention from mainstream social scientists working on Southeast Asian societies. This book provides an interdisciplinary synthesis of the topic of culture in the context of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and a structured overview of a large body of HCI research on (and with) culture. The book presents a short and guided overview of the concept of culture. It offers some background on the origin and development of the term culture. It also outlines some of its key traits and ingredients and summarizes three main perspectives of culture across disciplines. The book argues that culture matters considerably in HCI and discusses a number of reasons for and against its relevance. Arguments against include a lack of a universal or common definition of the term culture and globalization. Arguments in favor touch upon important aspects of HCI, including a diversely growing user base, the need to provide designers with enough support to design across cultures, and the inseparable relationship between culture and technology. The issues explored in this book can be classified into three, non-mutually exclusive, categories: theoretical, practical, and controversial. The book outlines the main conceptual perspectives of culture within HCI, including Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory, Edward T. Hall's cross-cultural theory of communication, and Richard Nisbett's cultural cognitive systems of thought as well as examining the ways in which culture has been operationalized in HCI research and the main functions of culture in this area. It closes with a discussion of some open issues intended to spark debate and future research. The majority of studies on the quality of life have been conducted in Western contexts and are based on Western participants. Comparatively speaking, there are only a few studies that have been conducted in different Chinese contexts. Also, there are fewer QOL studies based on children and adolescents, or studies that examine the relationship between QOL and economic disadvantage. In addition, more research is needed to address the methodological issues related to the assessment of quality of life. This volume is a constructive response to the challenges described above. It is the first book to cover research in Chinese, Western and global contexts in a single volume. It is a ground-breaking volume in which Chinese studies on the quality of life are collected. Der Einfluss von Norbert Elias als soziologischer Klassiker ist unbestritten. Dieser Status verdankt sich in erster Linie seiner Theorie vom Zivilisationsprozess. In dessen Geist steht auch Elias‘ 1982 erschienenes und in mehrere Sprachen übersetztes Buch Über die Einsamkeit der Sterbenden in unseren Tagen. Dort widmet er sich der Frage, wie Menschen der Endlichkeit des Lebens gegenüberstehen, unter welchen Bedingungen sie sterben, sich voneinander verabschieden, umeinander trauern und sich aneinander erinnern. Im Zentrum steht die Einsicht, dass es immerzu die Lebenden sind, die das Sterblichkeitsproblem zu bewältigen haben. Menschen in zivilisierten Gesellschaften tun dies Elias zufolge, indem sie Sterben und Tod verdrängen. Als schambesetztes Thema werde das Lebensende in alltäglichen Gesprächssituationen zumeist ausgeblendet; ferner haben sich Sterbeprozesse im Zuge sozialer Ausdifferenzierung vom heimischen Familienumfeld in Institutionen wie das Krankenhaus verlagert. Diese Entwicklung führe dazu, dass heute anders gestorben werde als früher: steril, geräuschlos, unauffällig – und vor allem einsam. Für die thanatosoziologische Erforschung des Umgangs mit Sterben, Tod und Trauer erwies sich Elias‘ Studie als Meilenstein. Kein anderes deutschsprachiges Buch dürfte in diesem Zusammenhang häufiger zitiert worden sein. Was jedoch fehlt, ist eine systematische Überprüfung der empirischen Aktualität seiner Thesen. Dieses Desiderat bildet den Ansatzpunkt für die vorliegende Untersuchung. Ausgehend von originären qualitativen Forschungen werden zentrale Aspekte der Elias'schen Perspektive aufgegriffen und auf ihre Anschlussfähigkeit hin analysiert. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Frage, was der soziale Wandel der vergangenen Jahrzehnte für die heutige Situation der Sterbenden bedeutet.

Ethnographie setzt an der empirischen Erforschung von sozialem Handeln, Lebenswelten, Praktiken, institutionellen Kontexten und kulturellen Orientierungen durch Beobachtung, Ko-Präsenz, längerfristige Teilnahme und Teilhabe an dem zu untersuchenden Feld an. Dies hat zur Entstehung einer soziologischen Ethnographie geführt, die ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf soziale und kulturelle Differenzierungen in der je eigenen Gesellschaft richtet.Ziel und Anliegen des Handbuches ist es, einen systematischen Überblick über Ausgangslagen, zentrale Ansätze, Debatten und Ausdifferenzierungen von soziologischer Ethnographie als Forschungsweise zu geben und zugleich die Entfaltung ethnographischer Forschung von ihren historischen Anfängen und Grundlegungen Ende des 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über Weiterentwicklungen in den 1960er Jahren, entscheidende Weichenstellungen in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren bis hin zu ihrer gegenwärtigen Vielgestaltigkeit nachzuzeichnen.

Studien unter dem Vorzeichen der Kulturgerontologie verstehen das Alter nicht als eine biologisch definierte Lebensphase, sondern als Teil sozialer Praxis und kultureller Ordnung. Die interdisziplinäre Annäherung an die Lebensphase Alter passiert dabei vor dem Hintergrund von Praxistheorien, Diskurstheorien, Materialitätstheorien oder Kulturtheorien. Empirisch geht mit dieser Neuausrichtung eine Erforschung des Alltagsnahen und Lebensweltlichen, des impliziten Wissens, der sozio-materiellen Arrangements und der Ästhetisierungen des Alterns einher. Der Band bildet die Vervielfältigung und Synthese von disziplinären Perspektiven der Kulturgerontologie im deutschsprachigen Raum ab und zeigt damit neue Wege auf, die Lebensphase Alter zu gestalten.

Geld ist heute ein sachlich, zeitlich und sozial ubiquitäres Phänomen. Es fällt schwer – trotz sich verstetigender Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrisen in der jüngeren Vergangenheit –, sich Geld wegzudenken oder sich auch nur ein anderes Geld(-system) zu denken. Diese Ubiquität steht im Kontrast zu einer hochgradig selektiven wissenschaftlichen Behandlung, die es verunmöglicht, den kultur-evolutionären Stellenwert des Geldes adäquat abzuschätzen. Die neoklassische Ökonomik ist durch eine (seit Adam Smith kolportierte) tauschtheoretische Engführung von Geld limitiert. Geld gilt dort strukturell als auch verteilungspolitisch weithin als neutral, also nicht als evolutionärer Mechanismus aus eigenem Recht. Die Neue Wirtschaftssoziologie hat zwar zu Recht den Modellplatonismus der Mainstream-Ökonomik kritisiert und auf die soziale Einbettung der Wirtschaft hingewiesen. Sie hat es in diesem Zuge aber nicht zu einer eigenständigen Geldtheorie gebracht. Das Buch präsentiert Überlegungen zu einer interdisziplinär informierten soziologischen Geldtheorie in kultur-evolutionärer Absicht. In zwei historischen Studien (zu Mesopotamien ab dem vierten Jahrtausend v.u.Z. sowie zum Griechenland des ersten Jahrtausends v.u.Z.) werden die koevolutionären Prozesse von Geldentwicklung, Schriftentwicklung und Rationalitätsentwicklung detailliert rekonstruiert. Einer solchen Forschungsperspektive gelingt es, die in der Soziologie etablierte problematische Dichotomie von Einbettungs- und Ausdifferenzierungsparadigmen durch eine integrative Perspektive zu überwinden und aufzuheben.

Jedoch können Bilder auch darauf verweisen, dass sich in ihnen etwas dem Zeigbaren generell entzieht. Diese Thematisierung des Unsichtbaren bzw. Undarstellbaren ist eine bisher wenig beachtete Eigenschaft und häufig Gegenstand einer speziellen Kunst, die sich im Kontext des ostasiatischen Zen-Buddhismus entwickelt hat. Zoltan Peter und Ina Wilczewska untersuchen in ihrer empirischen Studie 1000 Jugendliche quantitativ und qualitativ in Hinblick auf ihre Offenheit und Toleranz. Befragt werden Jugendliche, die in einem Drittstaat geboren wurden und in Österreich leben. 80% der befragten Jugendlichen zeigen sich als proeuropäisch eingestellt, 60 Prozent sind es in besonders starkem Ausmaß. Bei 20-30% besteht hingegen leichter bis stärkerer Nachhol- und Unterstützungsbedarf. Ihnen mangelt es an Offenheit gegenüber liberalen Werten und Grundrechten. Sie neigen beträchtlich zu Vorurteilen, 5% erweisen sich – besonders in Religionsfragen – als sehr intolerant. Im Kern zeigt die Studie, dass der Anteil der jungen eingewanderten Bevölkerung, der demokratiefeindliche Einstellungen erkennen lässt, bei weitem nicht so hoch ist, wie die öffentliche Meinung vermuten lassen würde.

This volume presents the preliminary results of the work carried out by the interdisciplinary cultural techniques research lab at the University of Erfurt. Taking up an impulse from media studies, its contributions examine —from a variety of disciplinary perspectives—the interplay between the formative processes of knowledge and action outlined within the conceptual framework of cultural techniques. Case studies in the fields of history, literary (and media) studies, and the history of science reconstruct seemingly fundamental demarcations such as nature and culture, the human and the nonhuman, and materiality and the symbolical order as the result of concrete practices and operations. These studies reveal that particularly basic operations of spatialization form the very conditions that determine emergence within any cultural order. Ranging from manual and philological'paper work'to practices of opening up and closing off spaces and collective techniques of assembly, these case studies replace the grand narratives of cultural history focusing on micrological examinations of specific constellations between human and nonhuman actors.

Der Band untersucht das durch die Begriffe Musik, Kultur und Gedächtnis abgesteckte Feld in einer zweifachen Bewegung: Zum einen wird Musik als eine wichtige soziokulturelle Ausdrucksform quer durch alle Kulturen gefasst, ihre Bestimmung und Funktion ändern sich mit den jeweiligen soziokulturellen Kontexten und Praxen. Jedes Musikstück steht in spezifischen kulturell entwickelten Traditionen und Formen, die von ihm aktualisiert werden. Musik wirkt als »gemeinschaftsbildende Macht« (Adorno), als Ausdrucksmittel individueller oder kollektiver Identität. Zum anderen ist den vielfältigen Formen von Musik die mehrfache Verbindung von Musik und Zeit gemeinsam: Die jeweilige musikalische Darbietung oder Reproduktion ist ein zeitlicher Ablauf und als solcher gedächtnishaft organisiert. Die ästhetische Erfahrung von Musik ist konstitutiv auf Gedächtnisleistungen angewiesen und Musik selbst eine temporale Kunstform. Neben dieser elementaren Zeitlichkeit zeigen sich in der Musik aberviele weitere Aspekte subjektiver und sozialer Zeit: die Geschichtlichkeit der einzelnen Stücke bzw. Werke selbst, die soziokulturelle zeitliche Lagerung von Ordnungsprinzipien wie Gattungen, Kunstformen, Stilen etc., der Wandel von basalen Formen des Musikmachens (etwa unter dem Einfluss von Medientechnologien). To suggest we should build a proverbial wall between the two—imaginary and objective worlds—runs counter to the reality of an always on, always connected culture in which we presently live.

Videogames were once made with a vast range of tools and technologies, but in recent years a small number of commercially available'game engines'have reached an unprecedented level of dominance in the global videogame industry. In particular, the Unity game engine has penetrated all scales of videogame development, from the large studio to the hobbyist bedroom, such that over half of all new videogames are reportedly being made with Unity. This book provides an urgently needed critical analysis of Unity as ‘cultural software'that facilitates particular production workflows, design methodologies, and software literacies. This book investigates the emergence of the modern concept of zeitgeist, the notion of a pervasive contemporary coherence, in the late 18th century. It traces zeitgeist's descent from genius saeculi and investigates its association with public spirit and public opinion before surveying its prominence around the Wars of Liberation in Germany and during the politically restless 1820s in England. This trajectory shows that zeitgeist emerged from the 18th-century discourses about culture and the public functioning of social collectives. Under the impact of the French Revolution the term came to describe social processes of political and cultural challenge. Zeitgeist was discussed as a social dynamic in which emerging elites disseminate new ideas which find enough public approval to influence cultural and political behaviour and practice. These findings modify the view that zeitgeist eludes critical grasp and is mainly invoked for manipulative purposes by showing that the zeitgeist discussions around 1800 contributed to the formation of modern politics and capture key aspects of how ideas are disseminated within societies and across borders, providing a way of reading history horizontally.

Justice has been the dominant cultural framework of people in the West for two centuries, ever since the rise of constitutional democracies. Consciously or not, most people in the West have a strong awareness of right and wrong. Their sense of morality is generally rooted in an obligation to the rule of law. In democratic societies, the rule of law ultimately relies on constitutional documents ratified by a widely-accepted process of development and implementation. For millennia, honor has been the dominant cultural framework of most people in the East and Middle East. Here, people know that speech and behavior display respect or disrespect. While pervasive in all relationships, honor and shame are most important in the family, extended family, and local community. In the East, honor is not necessarily an internal feeling, as it is in a justice culture. Honor is more often an external attribution bestowed by others rather than claimed by oneself. Harmony is prevalent globally in indigenous cultures. Many indigenous peoples do not distinguish between the supernatural and natural worlds. All aspects of life are connected. Interactions with spirit beings are the key to maintaining harmony in order to be secure. Reciprocity is a common cultural framework in the Global South. Here, one learns to develop connections with the right people in given circumstances for needed resources. These connections may or may not be characterized as'friendships'and provide not so much close friendships as reciprocal exchange. In some places, reciprocity is the means whereby one survives.
