Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their impacts on global warming have become one of the key issues of major concern in this century. Numerous research efforts have been carried out to address this issue. Governments have been the key drivers for promoting the use of renewable energy for reducing GHG emissions. They have initiated a range of activities, campaigns and energy policies in recent years for meeting the required targets of renewable energy in their respective countries. This book provides the most recent research and development of technologies and analyses carried out by a number of outstanding researchers from various countries to address the issues of GHG emissions. A solar thermal system is presented in this book to show how it can be used to cool buildings while reducing the electricity demands from the grid. An energy storage system is shown to be able to reduce the peak demands and mitigate power quality issues caused by photovoltaic systems. Life cycles of the conventional solar power and geothermal power plants are described to show the amount of GHG emission to be avoided over the life cycle of these two renewable energy sources. Decomposition analysis of greenhouse gas is presented to show how the human population, economic growth and energy demand can influence GHG emissions. Techniques are presented in this book to describe the production of biofuel from biomass to reduce the use of conventional fossil fuels. Finally, the contribution of road transport to the GHG emissions is included in this book.

The purpose of this project is to compare emissions of greenhouse gases from material recycling with those from virgin material production, both from a material supply perspective and from a recycling system perspective. The method for estimating emissions and climate benefits is based on a review, followed by a selection, of the most relevant publications on life cycle assessment (LCA) of materials for use in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The proposed averages show that emissions from material recycling are lower in both perspectives, comparing either material supply or complete recycling systems. The results can be used by companies and industry associations in Denmark, Norway and Sweden to communicate the current climate benefits of material recycling in general. They may also contribute to discussions on a societal level, as long as their average and historic nature is recognised.

Die Arbeit widmet sich einem grundlegenden, wenn auch wenig beachteten Teil der Klimarahmenkonvention und des Kyoto-Protokolls, nämlich der Verpflichtung der Vertragsstaaten, über den Ausstoß von Treibhausgasen zu berichten. Es erfolgt zunächst eine Systematisierung und rechtliche Einordnung der internationalen Vorgaben zur Berichterstattung. Auf dieser Grundlage untersucht die Arbeit die Rechtsfragen, die sich bei der Erfüllung dieser Pflichten im deutschen Recht stellen. Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung ist die Reichweite des Rechts auf informationelle Selbstbestimmung juristischer Personen, das auf der Basis der Rechtsprechung des Bundesverfassungsgerichts als abgestufter Grundrechtsschutz entwickelt wird. Schließlich bewertet die Arbeit die hierzu ergangenen statistikrechtlichen Regelungen.

The interaction of three variables underlie debates on the issue of climate change and what responses might be justified: the magnitude and rates of change of (1)population, (2)incomes, and (3)intensity of greenhouse gas emissions relative to economic activities. This book examines the interrelationships of the variables to explore their implications for policies that address climate change. Both internationally and domestically, initiatives are underway both to better understand climate change and to take steps to slow, stop, and reverse the overall growth in greenhouse gas emissions, the most important of which is carbon dioxide (CO2), emitted by the combustion of fossil fuels.
