2. Constructing Realities : Identity, Discourse and Englishness

- Abstract
Dominant discursive representations of belonging and place have become ever-more politicized, led by narratives of fear, uncertainty and anxiety. Grounded in an interdisciplinary and intersectional perspective, Constructing Realities critically examines contemporary theoretical narratives around English national identity as mediated by place and experience. Providing clear links between politically driven portrayals and specific lived experiences, as well as theory and everyday life, Stuart Cartland unpacks contemporary examples of ongoing sociocultural processes. Using the English context as a case study, Cartland argues that discourses around national identity are dominated by a conservative approach characterised by a sense of defensive exclusivism and insecurity. Employing discourse analysis to critically investigate the characteristics and constructed nature of ideological articulations of identity within the English social and cultural context, the author seeks to empower marginalised experiences such as those of inner-city, working-class and ethnic minority populations while also undermining dominant narratives around Englishness. Situating the English context within a wider ‘culture war', chapters identify patterns and processes that are applicable to a multitude of other nations within the contemporary era. Considering recent developments and ongoing processes such as globalisation, immigration and multiculturalism to offer a useful illustration of the ideological nature of identity formation, this body of work illuminates the intertwined construction of identity and place.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book proposes a radical shift in the way the world thinks about itself by highlighting the significance of Cross-Cultural Conversations. Moving beyond conventional boundaries, it examines the language in which histories are written; analyzes how scientific technology is changing the idea of identity; and highlights the need for a larger identity across nationality, race, religion, gender, ethnicity and class. It asks for a concerted effort to engage each other in open conversational forums on a range of contemporary global issues, alter our attitudes toward self and the other, and unlearn prejudices that perpetuate the practice of divisive identities. The book also explores critical themes such as political actions, solidarity-in-diversity, clash of social identities, tensions between nationalism and globalism, the quest for global peace and authentic meeting of world religions. Further, it discusses the evolving connection between science and religion, focusing on key philosophical ideas that have permeated the Indian cultural soil. The book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of philosophy, religious studies, science and technology studies, and cultural studies.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Even though concern about and interest in technology transfer have existed since the 1950s, it has become of increasing importance to lesser-developed and developing countries since the 1970s. The transfer of technology in general, and in particular the transfer of technical knowledge, lies at the heart of the North-South debate. There is an abundance of literature on technology transfer in almost every field of interest--policy, practice, applied case studies, and general recommendations--but little, if any, of the information is integrated. It remains widely distributed throughout the fields of economics, business, rural sociology, and anthropology. The same may be said for various studies of consultants as change agents. On the other hand, studies of counterparts--host country professionals--have been almost entirely neglected, with the exception of their implied roles as innovators or acceptors. There have been few attempts to tie practice to theory, theory to research, or research to practice. This volume attempts to provide the link between theory, research, and practice. Based upon research conducted at two large-scale water resource development projects in Indonesia, it focuses upon the problems and solutions encountered by two primary sets of people involved in the transfer of technical knowledge--foreign consultants and host country counterparts. Dr. Scott-Stevens presents a unified and applied approach to many of the cross-cultural theories, issues, and problems common to the transfer of technical knowledge across cultures.

Coming Home Your Way offers college and university students returning from an education-abroad experience a wealth of pertinent information, opportunities for meaningful reflection, and practical guidance on making the most of their time abroad. Grounded in research and addressing an array of aspects of education abroad – including intercultural communication, changing relationships, and career impact – Coming Home Your Way will be an invaluable tool for any student planning, experiencing, or returning from a stay abroad.Drawing from theory and research from multiple disciplines, and real-world experiences of students who have studied abroad, the volume addresses key themes critical to understanding reentry, including individual differences in taking in experience, communication patterns and approaches, the reentry transition, the nature of relationships in reentry, bridging reentry and career, and more. Within each chapter are opportunities for self-reflection that allow readers to integrate the ideas presented into their own experience. Compelling short fictional accounts add flavor and detail that bring theory to life.Coming Home Your Way provides a window into the complex experience of intercultural reentry. - Abstract
This book is an introduction to Intercultural Communication (IC) that takes into account the much neglected dynamic paradigm of culture in the literature. It posits that culture is not static, context is the driving force for change, and individuals can develop a multicultural mind.It is also the first IC textbook in the field that incorporates insight from evolutionary biology and the newly emerging discipline of culturalneurosciences. Such an interdisciplinary approach provides readers with new angles, encourages critical thinking, and sometimes challenges conventional knowledge in the field. The combination of the author's multiculturalacademic and journalistic background contributes to a balance of diverse perspectives and world views on cultural theories and discourses. The book is ideal for courses in Intercultural Communicationwith study cases, discussion topics and class activities.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book explores the issues related to the intercultural competence of future teachers and their readiness to work with children in a multicultural environment. An increasingly large number of Chinese multinational corporations (MNCs) have expanded their presence in global markets at high speed and on a large scale. In this book, is provided an example of the Chinese pattern of global expansion by investigating a specific successful marketing effort of a MNC headquartered in the People's Republic China (PRC). It also looks at the problems of intercultural communication of the Gypsy ethnic group in Transcarpathia. It attends to the issues of rhythm and the aesthetic experience in the late works of Edward Hall, the founder of the discipline intercultural communication (IC), and in the ideas of John Dewey, especially in his Art as Experience. The feminization of migration opens new spaces of communication, loosens the sexual division of labor, and transforms gender roles and models. Different forms of discrimination have different effects on individual and collective identities. This book provides the elements of discussion needed for the development of public policies to protect Latin American women rights making visible gender issues in the context of the international political agenda.

- Abstract
Interviewing is one of the most common techniques used to conduct qualitative research in the social sciences and humanities. As a result of globalization, researchers increasingly conduct interviews cross-, inter- and intra-nationally. This raises important questions about how differences and sameness are understood and negotiated within the interview situation, as well as the power structures at play within qualitative research, and the role that reflexivity plays in mediating these. What does it mean to interview Black women as a Black woman? How is ethnicity negotiated across various qualitative research encounters? How are differences bridged or asserted in feminist interviewing? These are just some of the questions explored in the chapters in this volume. Drawing on their recent research, the contributors detail their experiences of engaging in qualitative interviewing and examine how they negotiated the various dilemmas they encountered. The contributions challenge some of the assumptions made in early feminist work on interviewing, providing nuanced accounts of actual research experiences. This volume explores the practice and implications of conducting cross-, inter- and intra-cultural interviewing, bringing together researchers from a range of disciplines and countries to describe and analyse both its vicissitudes and its advantages.

- Abstract

- Abstract
In the current era of globalisation, big-C Culture loses analytical purchase. However, research, as well as intercultural training and education, continues to take for granted a more or less fixed idea of culture. This volume updates intercultural communication, both its theory and its application, by utilising a theory of scales in order to understand how culture gets contextualised as speakers communicate and negotiate meaning with each other. As succinctly captured in the title of this volume, it is suggested that research can ‘downscale culture'analytically: culture might be, but also might not be, relevant in an interaction. The 14 chapters brought together here explore the possibilities of such downscaling from a wide range of core themes in intercultural communication studies and from various research traditions, including interactional sociolinguistics, critical geography, conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis, textual analysis, multimodal analysis and nexus analysis.

- Abstract
Encounters between cultures are also encounters between knowledge systems. This volume brings together a number of case studies that explore how some knowledge in cultural contact zones becomes transient, evanescent, and ephemeral. The essays examine various aspects of cultural, especially colonial, epistemic exchanges, placing special emphasis on the fate of those knowledges that are not easily appropriated by or translated from one cultural sphere into another and thus remain at the margins of cross-cultural exchanges. In addition, the imposition of colonial power is unthinkable without the strategic deployment and use of knowledge; most colonial states, including those of Germany in the Baltic and in West Africa, were knowledge-acquiring machines – yet, acquisition always includes rejection, detainment and subjugation of recalcitrant epistemes.Bringing together insights from various scholarly disciplines, including literary studies, history, historical anthropology, and political science, the essays in this volume investigate how different or unfamiliar knowledge was, and in some cases still is, disarticulated by being belittled, discredited, and demonized. But they also show the strategies of resilience deployed by subjugated and subaltern people: the ways in which certain materials have escaped the coloniality of knowledge – how fragments and shards of other epistemologies remain inscribed in the polyphony and fuzziness of intercultural documents and archives.

- Abstract
Internationalization plays an important role in shaping the philosophy and practice of higher education, and it is arguably one of the most durable University achievements. Offering creative ways to achieve a shift from isolation to communication between people of different economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, telecollaboration exemplifies challenges and rewards of internationalization in the epoch of e-learning. In our interconnected world the tasks of both bringing the equality of opportunities and promoting intercultural dialogue continue to be priorities for education, whose major objective and obligation is an expansion of the freedoms of human beings. In the era of globalization, its fulfillment more than ever depends on making it possible for people of different backgrounds to participate in intercultural dialogue on equal terms. Intercultural collaborations in virtual environments offer unique opportunities for the realization of this goal. This book explores both a contribution of telecollaboration to the democratic education, solidarity and social justice in the globalized world as well as the complexities and challenges that arise from attempts to align international collaborations and social justice.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
A number of researchers, trainers and educators in intercultural communication acknowledge that the most popular models and theories of the field are insufficient – even unsuitable – to describe or explain our practical multicultural experiences today. This collection of articles offers new insights and critical evaluations of, intercultural communication theory and research. Authors from a variety of disciplines discuss, for example, methodological concerns; Chinese exceptionalism; micro and macro level interactions; ways to teach and study perceptions and self-awareness; and also provide new constructions for understanding communication and culture and their relationship.

- Abstract
Human beings have an intrinsic need to be with people who are similar to themselves. This is because they share the same ways of doing things, the same values, and function according similar rules. When one is with people who tend to be similar, human behavior is normalized, and one's actions appear to be in accordance with those exhibited by others in one's social circle. However, sometimes it becomes apparent that the situation is somewhat more complex. When this happens, one realizes that the issues that have been taken for granted about human interaction are not necessarily the same for everyone. This book elucidates what happens in the processes of communication when people from different cultural backgrounds experience other cultures. Emphasis is also given to the issue of interaction between people from various cultures. The book highlights the aspects that are recognized to posit difficulties in conveying messages from one culture to another. The notions of schemata, frames, scenarios and cultural scripts are outlined. The third part of the book examines some principles of critical discourse analysis, including, for instance, socio-political attitude, as well as concentrating on the notion of power relations of groups, legitimated by text as well as speech. This part also describes the concept of persuasion, as well as persuasive communication. The fourth part of the book is analytic. Attention is given to various discourses one encounters in everyday life and to the examination of various kinds of discourse, including for instance, complimenting, as well as political, discourse. As such, this book provides a new point of view for linguists as well as those interested in communication practice. The empirical part of the book will help shed some light on dilemmas people may be obliged to face in their career, and should be especially useful to students of intercultural communication.

41. Culture in Rhetoric

- Abstract
Richard Wilkins and Karen Wolf present an innovative look at the relationship between rhetoric and the ethnography of communication. They argue that a situated rhetoric extends beyond the study of public discourse to include moments of identification that are used in a situated, social, and cultural way. The main problem the book addresses is the idea that individuals use situated rhetoric to accomplish communal identification, even at the risk of multiple interpretations from others. Culture in Rhetoric draws on case studies exploring argumentation through speaking and silence over the use of Native American land; asynchronous communication active in the cultural frames of a CBS 60 Minutes episode; identity and communication at a Jewish havurah; optimal forms of communicative conduct in Britain; and the changes in education communication of a North American college. Wilkins and Wolf present the position that the context, form, and meaning of these situated instances of rhetoric provide a foundation upon which to analyze the communicative constructions of cultural identity.

- Abstract
This is a good time to reflect on opportunities and challenges for Australia in Latin America. Impressive economic growth and opportunities for trade and investment have made Latin America a dynamic area for Australia and the Asia Pacific region. A growing Latin American population, Australia's attractiveness to Latin American students, a fascination with the cultural vibrancy of the Americas and an awareness of Latin America's increasingly independent stance in politics and economic diplomacy, have all contributed to raising the region's profile. This collection of essays provides the first substantial introduction to Australia's evolving engagement with Latin America, identifying current trends and opportunities, and making suggestions about how relationships in trade, investment, foreign aid, education, culture and the media could be strengthened.

A domanda esplicita, Il Diplomatico Interculturale risponde altrettanto esplicitamente.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Did you know that, to get a job in Australia, it is important to use the right balance of informal and formal language during the interview? Did you know that student advising in Wu Chinese (spoken around Shanghai) is not a face-threatening activity, contrary to general perceptions about the nature of advice giving? Did you know that the use of minimal eye contact and flat intonation by Japanese speakers is interpreted by native English speakers as a lack of interest and willingness to communicate? Did you know that French and Australian English speakers show a surprising number of similarities in the way they use conversational humour in social visits? Think you know how to address your Italian lecturer or tutor? Think again! These are some of the findings arrived at in this exciting new collection of papers from an array of international scholars who represent different theoretical perspectives, but who all study communicative behaviour across languages and cultures, including English, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Wu Chinese. Adopting a comparative or cross-cultural approach, the majority of the contributions draw on authentic examples from a wide range of corpora, including social visits among friends, advising sessions involving recent high school graduates and/or their parents, simulated employment interviews and interactions involving second language learners. Contributions of a pedagogical approach offer practical assistance to the cross-cultural learner through a range of classroom activities. These include: a cross-linguistic comparison of conceptual metaphors; an applied ethnolinguistics framework; and ethnographic critical cultural awareness and reflexivity exercises. All of these activities are designed to equip the learner to study the communicative behaviours and cultural values of the target language. This edited volume is an important contribution to the growing body of work dedicated to better understanding the linguistic and pragmatic aspects of cross-cultural competence required for successful communication across cultural boundaries. It will appeal to readers interested in linguistics, interactional styles and communicative behaviour, cross-cultural pragmatics and intercultural communication.

- Abstract
How do people listen in a conversation, especially in an intercultural setting, and how do they shift from listener to speaker in the particular context? This book investigates listenership behaviours of a tutor and a student in the context of academic supervision sessions at a university in the UK, comparing British tutor - British student conversations with British tutor - Japanese student conversations in English. A new research methodology, a time-aligned multimodal corpus analysis, is introduced for analysing listenership and turn-taking structure, synthesising visual data with verbal data in timeline. The method also integrates discourse-pragmatic and conversation analytic approaches with the corpus-based analysis. This work reports strategies in use of response tokens for framework shifts and multi-functional nature of hand gestures observed in the conversations. Therefore, this book is highly relevant for researchers and postgraduate students, who study pragmatic and discursive practice in intercultural settings using multimodal corpora.

- Abstract
How socio-cultural factors influence the development of Intercultural Communication Competence is an essential part of developing the skills to work and interact with a rapidly globalizing world. Building upon the work of Edward Hall, Geert Hofstede and Stella Ting-Toomey, this book explores the role in which experience, family and other social aspects play in creating an individual's ICC skills. In this work, a model of six ICC skills allows for the examination of the impact of Polish national culture on socio-cultural values of Polish students in the three mutually dependent dimensions of politics, education and family. The empirical data present clear conclusions and indications of how specific factors are relevant or irrelevant in helping to construct ICC. These findings bear implications for trainers and researchers in approaching the issue of developing intercultural competences.
