This book presents the life stories and lived experiences of 12 individuals who transitioned from the sixth form of a further education college in a traditionally working-class area of the UK, to higher education. The author employs narrative inquiry in order to explore the participants'unique perspectives. Theoretically, Bourdieu's concepts of field and habitus are used to explain how these undergraduates adapted to their new circumstances, which in turn altered their ways of thinking and behaving. The book examines the impact of class on student transition, as well as offering insights into why further education warrants renewed focus, and concludes with a set of recommendations for both policy and practice.

This book chronicles the school envisioned by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1933 to serve Arthurdale, the New Deal government-created community in north-central West Virginia. Arthurdale was founded to house unemployed miners and their families and provide them with opportunities to receive healthcare and obtain gainful employment. Roosevelt had a particular interest in the education of children, feeling that education and social life were profoundly intertwined within a community. With that in mind, in 1934, she hired Elsie Ripley Clapp—an educator and leader in the Progressive Education movement—to design and implement the school, as well as oversee the social life of Arthurdale as a whole. In addition to covering the Arthurdale School's birth, life, and dissolution, Rosenberg discusses how the lessons of the school might serve the culture of education today, especially as an element of a comprehensive approach to community revitalization.

This book addresses issues related to school inclusion from the perspective of systemic inclusion. It focuses on the need to face the challenges of inclusion in education from a broad perspective, including the classroom, the school as an institution, families, and the community. It also pays attention to the full interactions between them. The book demonstrates how inclusion can be carried out in very real, concrete and everyday ways. It also shows how researchers can work hand in hand with the professionals and other stakeholders who are developing their practices day by day. The book draws on a range of research projects of the Spanish and international research groups to provide both rich theoretical frameworks and rigorous research outcomes related to the four dimensions of the systemic inclusion perspective and its necessary networking: classroom, school, families and the community. Most of the chapters take Spain as the case study but, far from being a local book, it uses Spanish analysis to dialogue universally with current main debates and challenges in inclusion, almost 30 years after the Salamanca Statement.

Es zeigt sich, dass für den erfolgreichen Erstkontakt zur Schulsozialarbeit eine Hilfesuchkultur der Schule, die Sichtbarkeit der Schulsozialarbeit an der Schule und problemsensible Lehrkräfte, die Schulsozialarbeit als Ressource betrachten, förderlich sind. Großen Einfluss auf das Zustandekommen des Kontaktes und auf die weitere Nutzung haben nicht nur die institutionellen Bedingungen der Schulsozialarbeit vor Ort, sondern auch die Umsetzung der Handlungsprinzipien der Sozialen Arbeit durch die Schulsozialarbeiter•innen. Auf welche Weise Schulsozialarbeit genutzt wird, hängt sowohl von den Themen der Beratung als auch von den Nutzungstypen ab. Insgesamt wird deutlich, welche zentrale Bedeutung Schulsozialarbeit im Leben von Jugendlichen haben kann.

Christoph Hertrich untersucht in dieser Studie die Chancen und Hürden einer Differenzierung im Wirtschaftsunterricht. Auf Basis einer Delphi-Experten-Befragung identifiziert er domänenspezifische und überfachliche Aspekte, die bei der Konzeption von differenzierenden Lehr-Lernarrangements berücksichtigt werden sollten. Katharina Gosse untersucht in ihrer ethnographischen Studie erstmals Veränderungsdynamiken in der offenen Kinder‐ und Jugendarbeit im Zusammenhang mit dem Ganztagsschulausbau. Ausgehend davon, dass die Praktiken durch die institutionellen Ordnungen beeinflusst sind, in denen sie sich ereignen, analysiert die Autorin Strukturlogiken von Erziehungspraktiken und bindet sie anhand eines ideologiekritischen Diskursverständnisses an Wissensformen zurück, welche durch die Professionellen (re‐)produziert werden. Sie zeigt, dass ambivalentes Wissen vorliegt, das sich sowohl an der emanzipatorischen Tradition der offenen Kinder‐ und Jugendarbeit und dem Alltagswissen zum Handeln Lehrender orientiert als auch an Wissensbeständen, die die Erziehungspraktiken als Betreuungspraktiken herstellen.

Jennifer Buchna untersucht in dieser qualitativen Längsschnittstudie, wie pädagogische Fachkräfte einer Grundschule Migration im Kontext ihrer Organisation und umgekehrt ihre Organisation im Kontext Migration konstituieren und welche Rolle die migrationsspezifischen institutionellen Anforderungen an Schule darin einnehmen. Im Ergebnis lässt sich ein zwischen den Fachkräften (Schulleitung, Lehrkräfte und weiteres pädagogisch tätiges Personal) geteiltes und zeitlich überdauerndes Wissen innerhalb der Organisation rekonstruieren, was unter dem Begriff der organisationalen Deutungsmuster konzeptualisiert wird. Jene Deutungsmuster sind maßgeblich von einem rassistischen Wissen geprägt und verweisen demnach auf einen organisationalen Rassismus als konstitutives Moment der Praxis des Organisierens.

Many children and teenagers refuse to attend school or have anxiety-related difficulties remaining in classes for an entire day. School refusal behavior can contribute to a child's academic, social, and psychological problems, impact a child's chances for future educational, financial, and personal success, and significantly affect family functioning.
