This book provides a thought-provoking analysis of the perception of China as a formidable threat amidst the current era of socio-political polarization and growing militarization. By exploring the discursive strategies and tactics employed to cultivate antagonism, it unveils the “culture of enmity” that fosters fear and distrust towards China, both in Taiwan and beyond. The geopolitical situation of Taiwan presents a predicament as it finds itself at the crossroads of two conflicting realms. On one hand, it is deeply intertwined with Chinese culture and history, with the added dimension of its strategic proximity to China at a time when the latter aspires to become a regional hegemon. On the other hand, Taiwan boasts a Western-influenced political system, Western-leaning strategic alliances, and a distinct political identity forged over the past few decades. It is within this intricate interplay of apparently dissonant but overlapping factors that the thorny and challenging nature of the discursive struggle for Taiwan becomes apparent. The book consists of a collection of articles initially created by the authors during their research in Taiwan over several years, first at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and then at National Cheng Kung University. The articles, organized into different chapters, cover various disciplines such as political philosophy, geopolitics, history, discourse analysis, and anthropology, reflecting the diverse educational backgrounds of the authors. I motori di ricerca hanno trasformato il nostro modo di esplorare la realtà per ottenere in modo selettivo informazioni. La sociologia ha tuttavia trascurato di chiedersi a quali condizioni ciò sia stato possibile. Poiché i motori di ricerca operano come sistemi di indicizzazione, essi andrebbero inclusi negli studi sulla memoria culturale. Questo libro intende dare un contributo a una questione ancora poco indagata da questi studi, ovvero quale sia il rapporto fra evoluzione e memoria sociale. Se l'evoluzione favorisce le funzioni e la funzione della memoria è quella di dimenticare, allora una ricerca di tipo socio-evolutivo dovrebbe spiegare non solo come avviene questo favoreggiamento, ma anche che cosa lo favorisca. Nel tentativo di dare una risposta a queste due domande si chiarisce infine che il vero problema della memoria culturale non è il passato, bensì il futuro.

This book deals with the traditional problem of the classification of linguistic units, with a primary focus on word classes. The approach is descriptive rather than theoretical, and is based on the use of distinctive features analogous to the ones used in phonology, which entails a radical reworking of the traditional classification. The first part presents some basic notions such as the use of distinctive features and the role of word classes in grammar; classification by prototypes; and the use of world knowledge as a resource to assign thematic relations to constituents in the sentence. In the second part, some descriptive problems are examined, namely the classification of verbs according to valency; connectives, adverbs, and the internal constituents of the NP; and the classification of units larger than words. This book will be of use as a guide for linguists working on the description of natural languages, as well as aresource for students on courses in linguistic theory and description.

Il volume presenta i risultati di due ricerche tra loro collegate, svolte tra il 2018 e il 2020, nell'ambito delle attività della Fondazione per la critica sociale. La prima, condotta da Cristina Vincenzo e Renato Foschi, è un'analisi di psicologia sociale, mediante lo strumento di questionari diffusi a livello nazionale, intorno alle forme della xenofobia e del razzismo «vecchio stile», cioè ideologicamente strutturato, nei suoi rapporti con il rifiuto dell'altro nelle sue modalità oggi meno evidenti e implicite, per così dire più discrete. La seconda, condotta da Anna Simone e Alberto De Nicola, si concentra sulla città di Roma: è un'inchiesta di taglio sociologico-etnografico, con interviste ai presidenti di alcuni comitati dei cittadini attraverso cui è possibile cogliere il lato oscuro, nelle vesti di una «lotta al degrado» – in una capitale peraltro afflitta da mille problemi, da quelli della mobilità urbana a quelli della raccolta dei rifiuti, all'abbandono a se stessi di interi quartieri –, di talune realtà organizzate della cosiddetta cittadinanza attiva. L'introduzione di Rino Genovese, presidente della Fondazione per la critica sociale, mette a fuoco il contesto teorico generale al cui interno si è formato il gruppo di studio sulla sindrome identitaria, definendo quest'ultima come una patologia a più facce di un bisogno identitario, da parte degli individui e delle collettività, che può avere aspetti positivi o negativi, progressivi o regressivi, a seconda delle forme in cui venga a esprimersi.

El aporte de este libro se encuentra en el entendimiento de los jóvenes y sus grupos desde sus propios términos, acercándonos a sus mundos de vida y a sus ejercicios comunicativos. ¿Cómo construyen, actúan y narran sus identidades? ¿Qué propuestas culturales son fundamentales dentro de sus mundos de vida? Buscamos un acercamiento a los escenarios de los diferentes jóvenes que cohabitan la ciudad, que comparten día y noche los espacios físicos y simbólicos, en muchos casos, sin un conocimiento profundo del otro, si no guiados por una serie de estereotipos, prejuicios y estigmas. De igual manera, revisamos la mirada y representación que se tiene de ellos desde afuera, desde el mundo adulto. Siguiendo el anterior orden de ideas nos cuestionamos ¿Cómo los ven los medios masivos de comunicación?, ¿Cuál puede ser su aporte en la solución de las problemáticas de violencia de la cuidad y el país?, ¿Qué nuevos oficios están aprendiendo y desarrollando?, ¿Cómo se apropian del espacio para su subsistencia?, ¿Cuáles son los espacios de distinción de clase social?, ¿Qué músicas escuchan, bailan, viven?, ¿Qué respuestas políticas desarrollan frente a la discriminación y el estigma? Entender estos espacios juveniles, estas identidades, captar cómo se relacionan entre ellos y con el resto de la sociedad es realizar un mapeo y una prospectiva social. Es darse cuenta de qué se está nutriendo una nueva generación de antioqueños urbanos y de colombianos. Saber cómo se piensan y cómo piensan a los demás es entender a quienes pronto harán el relevo social y marcarán nuevas sendas.

La covid-19 nos impacta con terribles cifras de muertos, enfermos y desempleados, pero existen muchos otros ámbitos que han sido afectados y que, a menudo, pasan desapercibidos. Si queremos sacar aprendizajes de una crisis que afecta a todas las esferas de la vida, resulta imprescindible huir de teorías conspiranoicas, fakenews y chivos expiatorios, para reflexionar serenamente con espíritu crítico y constructivo. In the Anthropocene sustainable development responds to socio-economic, environmental and political crises provoked by humankind due to global warming and the great acceleration of human intervention in ecosystems. Cada nação se alimenta a seu modo. Quando foi necessário identificar os brasileiros com um cultivo, escolheu-se a mandioca. Em contraste, as nações andinas foram identificadas com o milho. O quadro de feitio nacionalista, já nítido no final do século XVIII, foi fixado pela historiografia romântica e só começou a mudar recentemente, graças à antropologia e à arqueologia. Hoje se sabe que a historiografia romântica se baseou nos relatos dos cronistas coloniais, que viveram majoritariamente na costa, onde, de fato, predominou a mandioca. Mas já no século XIX o relato de viajantes, como Auguste Saint-Hilaire, vai nos mostrando um país diverso do ponto de visto alimentar, denunciando a forte presença do milho. Sucessivas pesquisas arqueológicas foram confirmando, no século XX e início do XXI, o uso corrente do milho, em especial nos territórios outrora ocupados pelas tribos de origem tupi-guarani, espalhadas da Amazônia até os pampas, entrando pelo Paraguai, Argentina e Uruguai, de sorte que, hoje, a representação da alimentação dos brasileiros como prioritariamente associada à mandioca não passa de viés de uma historiografia que necessita, urgentemente, ser revisada. Os capítulos do presente livro, escritos por especialistas, têm o propósito de levantar essa discussão a respeito da presença forte do milho na formação histórica do perfil alimentar do brasileiro de modo a se reconstruir a diversidade da sua dieta, seja no passado ou no presente. This book provides a review of the bioregionalist theory in the field of spatial planning and design as a suitable approach to cope with the growing concerns about the negative effects of metropolization processes and the need for a sustainable transition. This book analyses and critically evaluates the development of two key components of China's economy: the network of productive enterprises, and the national innovation system, from the inception of market-oriented reforms to the present day. The approach is a partly novel one, albeit inspired to classical political economy, rooted in the structure and evolution of social relations of production and exchange and of the institutional setting in these two crucial domains. The main findings are twofold: First, the role of planning and public ownership, far from withering, has being upheld and qualitatively enhanced, especially throughout the most recent stages of industrial reforms. Second, enterprises are increasingly participating - along with universities and research centers - in a concerted and historically unparalleled effort to dramatically upgrade China's capacity to engage in indigenous innovation. As a result, China's National Innovation System has been growing and strengthening at a pace much faster than that of the national economy as a whole. The book also presents a speculative and provisional perspective on the validity, and meaning, of the claim that the country's socioeconomic system is indeed a form of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Disability and Music Performance examines discriminatory social practices in music conservatoria, orchestras, music festivals and music competitions, which limit disabled people's access to music performance at a professional level. Of particular interest are the disabling barriers that musicians with an intellectual, physical, sensory or neurological disability—or an acquired brain injury—encounter in the world of Western classical music, both as students and as professional performers. This book collects data in the form of semi-structured interviews and video and audio recordings to explore the voice, concerns and suggestions expressed by musicians with disabilities. It examines their perceptions of both inclusive and discriminatory practices in music institutions as well as the representation of, and audio-visual recordings by, key musical figures with disabilities. Its findings aim to contribute to the wellbeing of musicians with impairments by challenging disabling social practices that see them as inferior.This publication offers performers, teachers and researchers new perspectives for exploring some of the most common social dynamics in encounters between normative audiences, musicians and music critics, and musicians with disabilities. It invites the reader to recognise disability as a rightful identity category in music performance and to dismantle the disabling barriers that limit the participation of disabled people in music-making.

This book presents an introduction to Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT) which is an emerging field in the area of complex systems attracting the attention of researchers from disparate scientific communities. EGT allows one to represent and study several complex phenomena, such as the emergence of cooperation in social systems, the role of conformity in shaping the equilibrium of a population, and the dynamics in biological and ecological systems.Since EGT models belong to the area of complex systems, statistical physics constitutes a fundamental ingredient for investigating their behavior. At the same time, the complexity of some EGT models, such as those realized by means of agent-based methods, often require the implementation of numerical simulations. Therefore, beyond providing an introduction to EGT, this book gives a brief overview of the main statistical physics tools (such as phase transitions and the Ising model) and computational strategies for simulating evolutionary games (such as Monte Carlo algorithms on lattices). This book will appeal to students and researchers in this burgeoning field of complex systems.

This volume addresses the pluralistic identity of the legal order. It argues that the mutual reflexivity of the different ways society perceives law and law perceives society eclipses the unique formal identity of written law. It advances a distinctive approach to the plural ways in which legal cultures work in a modern society, through the metaphor of the mirror. As a mirror of society, it distinguishes between the structure and function of legal culture within the legal system, and the external representation of law in society. This duality is further problematized in relation to the increasing transnationalisation of law. Based on a multi-level interpretation of the concept of legal culture, the work is divided into three parts: the first addresses the mutual reflections of social and legal norms that support a pluralist representation of internal legal cultures, the second concentrates on the external legal cultures that constantly enable pragmatic adjustments of the legal order to its social environment, and the third concludes the book with a theoretical discussion of the issues presented.

The Walls between Conflict and Peace discusses how walls are not merely static entities, but are in constant flux, subject to the movement of time. Walls often begin life as a line marking a radical division, but then become an area, that is to say a border, within which function civil and political societies, national and supranational societies. Such changes occur because over time cooperation between populations produces an active quest for peace, which is therefore a peace in constant movement. These are the concepts and lines of political development analysed in the book.The first part of the book deals with political walls and how they evolve into borders, or even disappear. The second part discusses possible and actual walls between empires, and also walls which may take shape within present-day empires. The third part analyses various ways of being of walls between and within states: Berlin, the Vatican State and Italy, Cyprus, Israel and Palestine, Belfast, Northern European Countries, Gorizia and Nova Gorica, the USA and Mexico. In addition, discussion centres on a possible new Iron Curtain between the two Mediterranean shores and new and different walls within the EU. Lungo tutto l'arco del Novecento si trovano significativi esempi di come l'opposizione non violenta ma risoluta all'oppressione politica possa risultare efficace. Il più ovvio è certo quello della lotta degli indiani per l'indipendenza dall'Impero Britannico; ma si possono ricordare anche, tra gli altri, i casi della dissidenza anticomunista nell'Europa orientale, della lotta per l'emancipazione dei neri negli Stati Uniti e in Sud Africa, e del dissenso nei confronti dei regimi autoritari in America Latina. In particolare, la resistenza non violenta si è rivelata capace di mettere in crisi quei regimi che, pur essendo oppressivi, sono in qualche misura sensibili alla forza dell'opinione pubblica. In altre parole, contro un potere violento ma non completamente irresponsabile nei confronti dei governati, lo sciopero, la non collaborazione e il fermo rifiuto di obbedire a norme ritenute ingiuste hanno spesso ottenuto notevoli risultati. Più complesso è invece giudicare l'efficacia della non violenza contro un regime capace di controllare in modo capillare la società attraverso il terrore (regime di polizia, deportazione e sterminio di massa) e la manipolazione profonda delle coscienze. In particolare è almeno dubbio che la resistenza non violenta avrebbe sortito buoni risultati contro un regime del tutto indisponibile a riconoscere ai propri oppositori il diritto di esistere come quello nazista. Eppure, perfino contro la dominazione eccezionalmente brutale di Hitler, vi è stato chi ha proposto la lotta disarmata, considerando la non violenza come l'unico modo davvero utile di condurre il conflitto. In questo contributo intendo esaminare le ragioni su cui tre intellettuali europei – Bart de Ligt, Simone Weil e Aldo Capitini – hanno fondato una simile decisione.

Su intención, mediante el análisis de la variable cultural, es:'entender cómo somos, por qué somos y cuánto nos cuesta el sistema de valores que tenemos. This collection brings together some of the most influential sociologists of law to confront the challenges of current transnational constitutionalism. It shows the constitution appearing in a new light: no longer as an essential factor of unity and stabilisation but as a potential defence of pluralism and innovation. The first part of the book is devoted to the analysis of the concept of constitution, highlighting the elements that can contribute from a socio-legal perspective, to clarifying the principle meanings attributed to the constitution. The study goes on to analyse some concrete aspects of the functioning of constitutions in contemporary society. In applying Luhmann's General Systems Theory to a comparative analysis of the concept of constitution, the work contributes to a better understanding of this traditional concept in both its institutionalised and functional aspects. Defining the constitution's contents and functions both at the conceptual level and by taking empirical issues of particular comparative interest into account, this study will be of importance to scholars and students of sociology of law, sociology of politics and comparative public law.

Este livro aborda um tema atualíssimo e controverso: a questão da laicidade estatal no Brasil, tomando como ponto de partida para a análise a polêmica em torno da presença de símbolos religiosos em espaços públicos. Para alguns agentes, a existência desses símbolos religiosos em órgãos públicos como escolas, universidades, hospitais, tribunais e parlamentos representaria uma ofensa ao princípio republicano e liberal de separação entre Estado e religião. A laicidade do Estado brasileiro estaria sendo violada na medida em que órgãos públicos ostentam símbolos e imagens de uma determinada religião. Por outro lado, os defensores da permanência dos símbolos religiosos reagem a essas demandas argumentando que a sua afixação é já parte de nossa tradição histórica, exprimindo a cultura cristã e católica de nosso país. O que parece estar em jogo nesses casos são diferentes definições e concepções de laicidade, bem como divergentes posicionamentos acerca do papel e do lugar da religião na vida social. Finalmente, esta obra, fruto de uma ampla pesquisa empírica e bibliográfica, almeja contribuir para a discussão acadêmica sobre esta tão candente e intrincada temática.
