The book describes the collection of the Museum Engines and Mechanisms of the University of Palermo, Italy, one of the most important and heterogeneous collections of engines and mechanisms in Europe, the first one in Italy to be awarded as Mechanical Engineering Heritage Collection by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Thanks to its numerous items, this book showcases the evolution of fluid machinery and applied mechanics, from steam engines up to turbojet engines, as well as hybrid system, giving several technical and historical information about its most important engines, which are described in detail through pictures and original drawings. The Museum preserves and makes freely available this almost unique collection of more than 300 engines, didactic models, and technical equipment, including various unique exemplars, continuously enhanced thanks to donations and through restoration activities carried out in a dedicated laboratory of the Museum. As a result of a great deal of philological research carried out on the documents collected in the Museum's archive, as well as in other institutional and corporate historical archives, this book serves as the reference tool of the collection and, more generally, of the Museum itself. Despite the technical subject and the academic environment in which it was created, the catalogue is realized to be read even by non-experts, offering different levels of detail, the first of which is the historical, economic and, in certain cases, even sporting context related to an engine, such as the vehicle for which it was designed and used.

This book discusses the legacy of the conference series The International Conferences of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES), which spans the second half of the Twentieth Century and the beginning of the twenty-first. The book first discusses how, at a time when there were few women engineers and scientists, a group of women organized a conference, in June 1964 in New York, which attracted 486 women. They presented their scientific achievements and discussed how to attract more women in STEM. This effort was carried out by volunteers, continuing the ICWES conferences over a period of 59 years. The authors discuss the organizers, the hosting societies, the scientific content, the changes in issues over time, and how the continuity has endured. The authors also discuss the importance of global involvement, shown through past conferences inlocations such as USA, UK, Italy, Poland, France, India, Ivory Coast, Hungary, Japan, Canada, and Korea. The authors also outline how the efforts were aided by the development of a not for profit Canadian corporation, the International Conference of Women in Sciences and engineering (INWES), which ensures the continuation of the conference series. Claire Deschênes and Monique Frize ensured that the conference database was digitalized and is now available at the Canadian Archive of Women in STEM, University of Ottawa Library, with the hope that researchers will continue to explore this rich database. As an important part of the Women in Science and Engineering book series, the work hopes to inspire women and men, girls and boys to study and work in STEM fields. This book is important historically because it documents a unique adventure created by women in STEM through vision and leadership. Their efforts established modes of networking and sharing their contributions in science, technology, and on gender issues.

This volume showcases the valuable achievements of the Romanian technology and industry worldwide. It started from the premise that the history of Romanian technique is scarcely known outside the borders of Romania. The main Romanian contributions to the world's technological heritage are missing, except for a few names in the field of aviation, from the great encyclopedias and dictionaries published worldwide. This is due, among other reasons, to the insufficient promotion in widely spoken languages of the history of Romanian technology. The multidisciplinary approach of the volumes means that the field of technology had to be split into several branches. The present volume includes the following industries: mining, metallurgy, oil, natural gas, machine building, agricultural machinery, military, textiles, and construction. Folk technology, the formation of the industrial system, and mechanics are tackled in separate chapters. For each field, are engaged the collaboration of authors who have already published a history of their field. Certain chapters were drafted with the aid of specialists who have played the part of policy makers in the elaboration of development strategies for Romania and who are familiar not only with the facts and the history of their field, but also with the ‘philosophy'behind its development.

There are articles devoted to communication engineering, energy management in microgrids and potential assessment of wind energy in conditions of Ethiopia. Unerwartete Verbindungen werden hervorgehoben, insbesondere der beträchtliche Einfluss der Axialverdichter-Technologie des schweizerisch-deutschen Unternehmens BBC Brown Boveri & Cie. auf die beiden anderen Seiten.Der Autor deckt wichtige Beziehungen und Abhängigkeiten auf, die einen erheb-lichen technischen Austausch förderten, und daher zu einer Änderung der bisherigen technisch-historischen Betrachtungsweise führen müssen, insbesondere in den entscheidenden Jahren vor Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Damit werden bestehende Lücken in der bisher allzu einseitigen Sicht auf diesen technisch herausragenden Entwicklungsfortschritt geschlossen.Die überlieferte ‚Whittle vs. von Ohain Saga‘ wird nicht in Gänze wiederholt, aber insoweit angesprochen, wie es zum Verständnis des nunmehr erheblich erweiterten Geschichtsbilds erforderlich ist.

'Von allen Männern, die sich im 19. Jahrhundert mit dem Problem der Fliegerei beschäftigten, war Otto Lilienthal mit Abstand der bedeutendste. Seine Größe zeigte sich in jeder Phase des Problems. Niemand kam ihm gleich in der Fähigkeit, neue Mitstreiter für die Sache zu gewinnen; niemand kam ihm gleich in der Fülle und Tiefe des Verständnisses der Prinzipien des Fliegens; niemand tat so viel, um die Welt von den Vorteilen gekrümmter Flügeloberflächen zu überzeugen; und niemand tat so viel, um das Problem des menschlichen Fluges in die freie Luft zu verlegen, wo es hingehörte.'Diese Worte stammen von Wilbur Wright, der 1903 zusammen mit seinem Bruder Orville auf den Sanddünen der Outer Banks vor der Küste North Carolinas den ersten Motorflug erfolgreich absolvierte. This book provides a compact history of gears, by summarizing the main stages of their development and the corresponding gradual acquisition of engineering expertise, from the antiquity to the Renaissance and the twentieth century.
