Energy poverty, especially in rural areas, has become a central focus of scholarly and policy discussions. However, there is a significant gap in understanding the impact of religious beliefs on this phenomenon. This paper aims to fill this gap by utilizing household survey data from the China Labor-force Dynamics Survey (CLDS) spanning three waves (2012, 2014, and 2016) to examine the causal link between religious beliefs and energy poverty, covering clean energy accessibility and affordability among rural residents. Our analysis unveils a substantial positive influence of religious beliefs on the likelihood of experiencing energy poverty, especially concerning accessibility and affordability. This effect is notably pronounced among males, ethnic minorities, and low-income groups. Low income and education are recognized as pivotal mediating factors through which religious beliefs contribute to energy poverty. The findings of this study offer valuable insights for formulating strategies to mitigate energy poverty in rural China, with a particular emphasis on the role of religious beliefs. Many surveys on vehicle traffic safety have shown that the tire road friction coefficient (TRFC) is correlated with the probability of an accident. The probability of road accidents increases sharply on slippery road surfaces. Therefore, accurate knowledge of TRFC contributes to the optimization of driver maneuvers for further improving the safety of intelligent vehicles. A large number of researchers have employed different tools and proposed different algorithms to obtain TRFC. This work investigates these different methods that have been widely utilized to estimate TRFC. These methods are divided into three main categories: off-board sensors-based, vehicle dynamics-based, and data-driven-based methods. This review provides a comparative analysis of these methods and describes their strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, some future research directions regarding TRFC estimation are presented. To effectively and accurately segment images in the presence of intensity inhomogeneity and noise, a variational level set model based on maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion is proposed in this paper. In the Bayesian framework, the posterior probability of the corrected smooth image under the observation condition is described by a likelihood function of the observation multiplied by a prior probability of the corrected smooth image. In the model, the likelihood function of the observation is computed under the assumption that the observed image obeys the local Gaussian distribution with both varying means and variances; and based on Markov random field (MRF) model, the prior probability of the corrected smooth image is defined as a Gibbs energy function that is related to the total variation. Maximizing the likelihood function can effectively capture the local change of image intensity, and maximizing the prior probability can restrain the influence of noise. An alternating direction iterative algorithm combining with fixed point iteration and gradient descent is introduced to solve the proposed model. The experiments for both synthetic and real images validate the proposed model. To quantitatively assess heavy metal accumulation and potential ecological and human health risks as well as analyze the sources of metals in a typical soil-rice system located on the southeast coast of China, 120 topsoil samples and corresponding rice grain samples were collected across the study area. The concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Hg, Zn, Cu, and Ni were analyzed. The results revealed that Hg, Cd, and Cu were the main pollutants in soils. Besides, according to geo-accumulation value of Hg, 18.3% of samples were at or above moderate contamination levels. Additionally, the soil was in moderate ecological risk from combined heavy metal pollution, and 49.7% and 27.0% of this risk could be attributed to Hg and Cd pollution, respectively, due to their high toxic-response factors. For the rice samples, Cd content showed the highest biological accumulation coefficient value (40.8%) in rice grains and was slightly greater than its maximum allowable value (MAV) (0.2 mg/kg) in 7.5% of samples, whereas the other metals were all lower than their corresponding MAVs. Heavy metal exposure (especially As exposure) via rice consumption causes significant carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to adults, and non-carcinogenic risk to children, while the carcinogenic risk to children was at tolerable level. Greater rice consumption might be responsible for the greater health risk to adults than children. Natural sources (loaded heavily with Cr and Ni) such as lithogenic components and soil parent materials, agricultural activities (loaded heavily with Cd, Cu, and Zn), especially excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers, and industrial activities (loaded heavily with Hg, Pb, and As) including vehicle emissions, coal combustion, and those of the textile and chemical industries were identified as the main sources. Recently, the role of miR-30a in tumor development has attracted extensive attention. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the role of miR-30a and its associated target low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6) in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) cells. Here, miR-30a was markedly down-regulated in ccRCC tissues and cells, and was correlated with the advanced TNM stage and poor prognosis. By contrast, LRP6 protein level was increased in ccRCC specimens and cell lines, and inversely correlated with miR-30a expression. Stable overexpression of miR-30a suppressed cell proliferation in vitro, impeded tumor growth in vivo, prevented migration and invasion, and triggered apoptosis of ccRCC cells. Also, over-expression of miR-30a in ccRCC cells promoted the expression of the epithelial marker E-cadherin and reduced the levels of mesenchymal markers. Mechanistically, the dual-luciferase reporter, RNA immunoprecipitation and western blot assays confirmed that miR-30a directly targeted the 3′-untranslated regions of LRP6 to inhibit its expression. Further, miR-30a-mediated effect was partially reversed by co-transfection with LRP6 plasmids or enhanced by silencing of LRP6. In conclusion, miR-30a exhibits effective antitumor properties by targeting LRP6 in proliferation and metastasis of ccRCC. This study could provide new insights into the treatment of ccRCC. The interdependence between alcohol and cigarette consumption has received little attention in the literature on consumer behavior, particularly in transition economies such as China. The available literature generally addresses the interdependence between alcohol and cigarette consumption by estimating demand systems; however, in our case data on price variation and price information for a specific consumer are limited. A structural equation model is applied as an alternative to estimate the interdependence between alcohol and cigarette consumption with the absence of price variation, using parental consumption patterns as instrumental variables for offspring's consumption behaviors. The empirical investigation is conducted by using a panel structure of the data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) over the period from 1993 to 2011. The results indicate that alcohol and cigarettes are complementary goods for men in China. When the demand for alcohol (cigarettes) increases, the demand for cigarettes (alcohol) will also increase, ceteris paribus. From a public health perspective, this implies that measures for reducing alcohol or cigarette consumption might have a double dividend effect on health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a nonconvex and nonsmooth anisotropic total variation model is proposed, which can provide a very sparser representation of the derivatives of the function in horizontal and vertical directions. The new model can preserve sharp edges and alleviate the staircase effect often arising in total variation (TV) based models. We use graduated nonconvexity (GNC) algorithm to solve the proposed nonconvex and nonsmooth minimization problem. Starting with a convex initialization, it uses a family of nonconvex functional to gradually approach the original nonconvex functional. For each subproblem, we use function splitting technique to separately address the nonconvex and nonsmooth properties, and use augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) to solve it. Experiments are conducted for both synthetic and real images to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. In addition, we compare it with several state-of-the-art models in denoising and deblurring applications. Thyroid cancer (TC) incidence in China has increased rapidly in recent years. Hangzhou is one of the areas with the highest TC incidence in China. However, the composite space-time variation and risk factors of TC are rarely investigated. We acquired 7147 TC cases from 2008 to 2012 in Hangzhou. Descriptive statistics were employed to compare the incidence disparities in different sub-populations. Geographical information systems were used to create spatial distribution maps. Hotspot analysis was applied to detect high/low incidence clusters, and the GeogDetector model was implemented to investigate the relationship between TC incidence and environmental factors. TC incidence in Hangzhou increased dramatically from 2008 to 2012: a noticeable 244.9 % increase, from 10.04 to 34.63 per 100,000 individuals, with a female to male ratio of 3.0, an urban to rural ratio of 3.2 and iodine sufficient to iodine deficient ratio of 3.5. Significantly high TC cluster was detected in the northeast area of Hangzhou. Elevation was found to be the most powerful determinant of TC distribution, followed by soil parent materials and slope. TC incidence decreased as elevation and slope increased. Concerning soil parent materials, deposited materials were generally linked to higher TC incidence than were eluvium ones. The spatial/temporal pattern of TC incidence is affected by geomorphology and soil property variations. Excessive iodine exposure may be a TC risk factor. Health research and management should pay sufficient attention to the improved understanding and prediction of the composite space-time distribution of the quickly increasing TC incidence described in this study. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis, in which T cell responses and cytokines may play critical roles in the development of the disease. TIM-3 may affect immune responses and is correlated with decreased expression of interferon gamma (INF-γ) in CD4+ T cells. In the current study, we investigated the association between polymorphisms in the TIM-3 gene and susceptibility to OA. Two polymorphisms in TIM-3, −574G/T and +4259T/G polymorphisms, were identified in OA cases and healthy donors by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Data revealed that the prevalence of TIM-3 +4259T/G genotype was significantly elevated in OA patients than in the healthy donors after adjustment (Odds ratio [OR] = 2.67, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.32-5.11, P < 0.001). Similarly, the TIM-3 +4259G allele presented a positive association with the risk of OA after adjustment (OR = 2.58, 95 % CI 1.29-4.82, P = 0.003). The TIM-3 −574G/T polymorphism did not show any correlation with the disease. We further examined whether the two TIM-3 polymorphisms could affect INF-γ expression in CD4+ T cells. Data revealed that subjects carrying polymorphic +4259TG genotype had significantly higher mRNA and protein levels of INF-γ in CD4+ T cells compared to wild-type GG genotype ( P < 0.001 and P < 0.01). These results indicated that TIM-3 polymorphism is associated with increased susceptibility to OA possibly by upregulating INF-γ expression in CD4+ T cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An ion-pair HPLC method with UV detection is described for the determination of boanmycin in freeze-dried pharmaceutical preparations. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a 5 μm Agilent Eclipse XDB-C18 column (150 × 4.6 mm). The mobile phase contained methanol, acetonitrile, 055 M sodium hexanesulfonate and 0.08 M acetic acid in water. UV detection was at 291 nm. Introduction: In percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD), pain occurs when the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) is exposed, removed, and decompressed. However, pain characteristics of the PLL stimulated in PELD have not been reported.A total of 932 patients underwent PELD under local anesthesia. Pain distribution and intensity were recorded on a posterior body diagram during the operation. Pain intensity was assessed by the visual analog scale scores for the back (VAS-B). The PLL specimens were collected and observed using hematoxylin–eosin (HE) staining and immunohistochemistry.Patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH) at L4/5 and L5/S1 had pain foci in different regions. The mean VAS-B scores between the ventral and dorsal sides of the PLL were 6.14 ± 0.97 and 4.80 ± 1.15, respectively (P < 0.05). The distribution of nociceptive nerve fibers in the dorsal side was uniform and scattered, while those in the ventral side were mainly distributed near the outer surface of the annulus fibrosus.
