Scientific retraction practices are intended to help purge the continued use of flawed research and assist in maintaining the integrity, credibility and quality of scientific literature. However, the practical effect of retraction is still vague and needs to be further explored. In this study, we analysed the citation counts and sentiments (positive/negative) of retracted articles in psychology journals from Web of Science to explore the effect of retraction. Causal inference strategies were used to measure the net effect of retractions on citation. Results show that the retraction practices induced the citation counts to reduce as expected. However, the proportion of negative citations also decreased because of retraction, indicating an unsatisfied effect. The retraction practice of high-impact factors and open access journals was more effective than other journals. The study integrated an understanding of the dissemination of erroneous publications and provided implications for liabilities involved in the whole retraction process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to a study from World Health Organization's Global Burden of Disease, mental and neurological disorders have accounted for 13% of global diseases in recent years and are on the rise. Neuropsychiatric conditions or neuroinflammatory disorders are linked by the presence of an exaggerated immune response both peripherally and in the central nervous system (CNS). Cognitive dysfunction (CD) encompasses a complex group of diseases and has frequently been described in the field of autoimmune diseases, especially in multiple non-CNS-related autoimmune diseases. Recent studies have provided various hypotheses regarding the occurrence of cognitive impairment in autoimmune diseases, including that abnormally activated immune cells can disrupt the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to trigger a central neuroinflammatory response. When the BBB is intact, autoantibodies and pro-inflammatory molecules in peripheral circulation can enter the brain to activate microglia, inducing CNS inflammation and CD. However, the mechanisms explaining the association between the immune system and neural function and their contribution to diseases are uncertain. In this review, we used clinical statistics to illustrate the correlation between CD and autoimmune diseases that do not directly affect the CNS, summarized the clinical features and mechanisms by which autoimmune diseases trigger cognitive impairment, and explored existing knowledge regarding the link between CD and autoimmune diseases from the perspective of the field of neuroimmunology. Plant defense responses against microbial pathogens rely on the innate immune system. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important secondary messengers that mediate downstream immune responses. Therefore, modification of ROS signaling contributes to crop plant breeding for broad-spectrum disease resistance. In plant immunity, ROS signaling is mainly mediated by NADPH oxidases, which use NADPH as a substrate to catalyze the reduction of oxygen to produce superoxide. NADPH generation is an important rate-limiting step in the ROS production pathway. Manipulation of the NADPH generation pathway may provide a novel strategy for regulating ROS signaling to improve broad-spectrum disease resistance of crop species. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling has an important role in plant innate immune responses and is primarily mediated by NADPH oxidase, also known as respiratory burst oxidase homologs (RBOHs) in plants. NADPH serves as a fuel for RBOHs and limits the rate or amount of ROS production. Molecular regulation of RBOHs has been extensively studied; however, the source of NADPH for RBOHs has received little attention. Here, we review ROS signaling and the regulation of RBOHs in the plant immune system with a focus on NADPH regulation to achieve ROS homeostasis. Drought stress is a common environmental challenge that plants face, severely constraining plant growth and reducing crop yield and quality. Several studies have highlighted distinct responses between monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. However, the mechanisms underlying flax tolerance to abiotic stress, such as drought, remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics and the genome-wide gene expression of oil flax and fiber flax in response to drought stress. The results revealed that drought stress caused significant wilting of flax leaves. Within the first 24 h of stress, various physiological and biochemical characteristics exhibited rapid responses. These included fresh weight, relative water content (RWC), proline, soluble protein, soluble sugar, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) in the leaves or roots of flax. Additionally, drought stress led to a significant rise in lignin content in fiber flax. In addition, the transcriptome analysis demonstrated genome-wide variations in gene expression induced by drought stress. Specifically, genes associated with photosynthesis, proline biosynthesis, and phytohormone metabolism exhibited significant differences in expression levels under stress conditions in flax. These findings highlight the rapid response of flax to drought stress within a short-term period. Our experiment also revealed that, although there were variations in the levels of small compound content or gene expression between Longya10 and Fany under drought stress, most stress-resistance responses were similar. Background: To explore correlation between the dose of norepinephrine and the timing of starting enteral nutrition in septic shock (SS) patients. Methods: Totally 150 SS patients treated with enteral nutrition (EN) in Shiyan People's Hospital from Dece20 to July 2022 were included in this retrospective analysis. Patients were divided into tolerance group (n = 97) and intolerance group (n = 53) according to whether EN was tolerated or not. The study indexes include baseline characteristics [gender, age, weight, body mass index (BMI), scores of acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II system (APACHE II), comorbidity, time in-hospital, prognosis], clinical indexes [mean arterial pressure (MAP), time of mechanical ventilation (MV), norepinephrine dose at the time of starting EN, using of sedative drug, gastrointestinal motility drugs and cardiotonic drugs], EN indexes (timing of starting EN, speed of EN infusion, calorie of EN per day, EN target percent), and gastrointestinal intolerance index [residual gastric volume > 250 ml, vomiting, aspiration, gastrointestinal bleeding, blood lactic acid (BLA)]. Student-t test and Mann-Whitney test were used for test of measurement data. Chi-square test and fisher exact test were used for comparison of categorical data. Results: There were 51 (52.58%) male and 46 (47.42%) female patients with a median age of 66.4 ± 12.8 years old in tolerance group. There were 29 (54.72%) male and 24 (45.28%) female patients with a median age 67.3 ± 12.5 years old in intolerance group. The weight and BMI were significantly higher in intolerance group than those of tolerance group (both P < 0.001). There was no significant difference of comorbidity rate between two groups (all P > 0.05). Before the overlapping time of EN and norepinephrine, there were significantly more patients receiving gastrointestinal motility drugs in intolerance group compared with tolerance group (58.49% vs. 20.62%, P < 0.001). Patients in tolerance group had significantly less residual volume in gastric than that of intolerance group (188.00 ± 52.32 vs. 247.83 ± 34.95, P < 0.001). The rate of residual volume in gastric > 250ml (9.28% vs. 37.74%, P < 0.001), vomiting (15.46% vs. 35.85%, P = 0.004) and aspiration(16.49% vs. 33.96%, P = 0.018) were significantly lower in tolerance group than those of intolerance group. The BLA in tolerance group was significantly lower than that of intolerance group (1.84 ± 0.63 vs. 2.90 ± 1.5 3mmol/L,P < 0.001). There were significantly more patients with increased BLA (75.47% vs. 30.93%, P < 0.001) and > 2mmol BLA rising (43.40% vs. 8.25%, P < 0.001) in intolerance group than those of tolerance group. Patients in tolerance group had significantly lower time of starting EN (40.97 ± 9.53 vs. 49.85 ± 11.61 h, P < 0.001), dose of NE(0.23 ± 0.07 vs. 0.28 ± 0.10 ug/kg/min, P = 0.049), mortality in hospital (18.56% vs. 49.06%, P < 0.001) and mortality in ICU (16.49% vs. 37.74%, P < 0.001) compared with intolerance group. The EN target percent (92.78% vs. 56.60%, P < 0.001) and calorie of EN during overlapping period (20.22 ± 5.99 vs. 16.21 ± 2.52 kcal/kg/day, P < 0.001) in tolerance group were significantly higher than those of intolerance group. Conclusions: SS patients should be comprehensively evaluated according to their condition. Obese patients are more prone to EN intolerance, and those who can tolerate EN should be implemented as soon as possible. The use dose of NE is significantly related to EN tolerance. Promoting growth in patent activity was an important stated goal of China's Medium- and Long-Term Plan for Science and Technology Development (2006–20) , and it was a successful one. By the end of this ambitious blueprint, China had witnessed enormous growth in the number of granted patents, especially those granted to public universities. This vital role played by universities in technology innovation justifies further research on the role of academia with respect to the development of technology. However, most studies on patenting by Chinese universities are limited in terms of research scale and context, and patent performance is seldom investigated in great detail. This study first presents an overall analysis of the utility patents granted to Chinese public universities (not utility model patents). Then, we compare the patent performance of two elite university groups: Project 985 universities in China and member institutions of the Association of American Universities (AAU) in the USA. Our results show that Chinese universities account for a high proportion of the total patents granted in China, and the number of patents granted to universities has grown rapidly in recent decades, making them a very substantial contributor to China's innovation system. However, the value of patents did not improve as their counts surged. Compared to AAU universities, the technological and economic value of patents held by Project 985 universities is considerably lower, even for the top-patenting universities in China. Background: As adequate support, virtual reality (VR) has been increasingly introduced into the classroom to help students learn a new language. However, empirical studies exploring the educational potential of using 360° spherical video‐based virtual reality (SVVR) in high‐school Chinese language classrooms are still lacking. Objectives: A mind mapping‐based SVVR learning system is proposed for international high‐school students' Chinese courses and examines its effects on improving Chinese learning achievements and perceptions among Grade 10 students who learn Chinese as a foreign language. Methods: This study adopted a quasi‐experiment design. Participants (N = 66) were assigned to one of three conditions: mind mapping‐based SVVR (MMBSVVR), conventional SVVR (CSVVR), or traditional lecturing (TL). Our mixed‐method approach employed pre‐and post‐tests to measure Chinese learning achievements, questionnaires to measure Chinese learning motivation, problem‐solving ability, and self‐efficacy, and semi‐structured interviews to further explore students' feelings and attitudes about Chinese courses in corresponding learning environments. Results and Conclusions: The results showed that the MMBSVVR classroom significantly improved high students' Chinese learning achievements in Chinese vocabulary and making sentence, problem‐solving ability, and self‐efficacy. Moreover, SVVR stimulates students' learning interest and class participation, and mind mapping provides students with a clear guide to arrange the knowledge. These findings help interpret the relationships between MMBSVVR and learning achievements, Chinese learning motivation, problem‐solving ability, and self‐efficacy in an international high school Chinese courses, thus providing insight on integrating MMBSVVR into existing classrooms.
