The location planning of relief distribution centres (DCs) is crucial in humanitarian logistics as it directly influences the disaster response and service to the affected victims. In light of the critical role of facility location in humanitarian logistics planning, the study proposes a two-stage relief distribution location problem. The first stage of the model determines the minimum number of relief DCs, and the second stage find the optimal location of these DCs to minimize the total cost. To address a more realistic situation, restrictions are imposed on the coverage area and capacity of each DCs. In addition, for optimally solving this complex NP-hard problem, a novel two-phase algorithm with exploration and exploitation phase is developed in the paper. The first phase of the algorithm i.e., exploration phase identifies a near-optimal solution while the second phase i.e. exploitation phase enhances the solution quality through a close circular proximity investigation. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of the proposed algorithm with other well-known algorithms such as genetic algorithm, pattern search, fmincon, multistart and hybrid heuristics is also reported and computationally tested from small to large data sets. The paper aims to present a multi-product, multi-stage, multi-period, and multi-objective, probabilistic mixed-integer linear programming model for a sustainable forward and reverse logistics network problem. It looks at original and return products to determine both flows in the supply chain—forward and reverse—simultaneously. Besides, to establish centres of forward and reverse logistics activities and make a decision for transportation strategy in a more close-to-real manner, the demand is considered uncertain. We attempt to represent all major dimensions in the objective functions: First objective function is minimizing the processing, transportation, fixed establishing cost and costs of CO2 emission as environmental impacts. Furthermore, the processing time of reverse logistics activities is developed as the second objective function. Finally, in the third objective function, it is tried to maximize social responsibility. Indeed, a complete sustainable approach is developed in this paper. In addition, this model provides novel environmental constraint and social matters in the objective functions as its innovation and contribution. Another contribution of this paper is using probabilistic programming to manage uncertain parameters. Moreover, a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is configured to achieve Pareto front solutions. The performance of the NSGA-II is compared with a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) by proposing 10 appropriate test problems according to five comparison metrics using analysis of variance (ANOVA) to validate the modeling approach. In this paper, we present a multi-objective simulation-based headway optimization for complex urban mass rapid transit systems. Real-world applications often confront conflicting goals of cost versus service level. We propose a two-phase algorithm that combines the single-objective covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy with a problem-specific multi-directional local search. With a computational study, we compare our proposed method against both a multi-objective covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy and a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The integrated discrete event simulation model has several stochastic elements. Fluctuating demand (i.e., creation of passengers) is driven by hourly origin-destination-matrices based on mobile phone and infrared count data. We also consider the passenger distribution along waiting platforms and within vehicles. Our two-phase optimization scheme outperforms the comparative approaches, in terms of both spread and the accuracy of the resulting Pareto front approximation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an Automatic Clustering algorithm for Interval data using the Genetic algorithm (ACIG). In this algorithm, the overlapped distance between intervals is applied to determining the suitable number of clusters. Moreover, to optimize in clustering, we modify the Davies & Bouldin index, and to improve the crossover, mutation, and selection operators of the original genetic algorithm. The convergence of ACIG is theoretically proved and illustrated by the numerical examples. ACIG can be implemented effectively by the established Matlab procedure. Through the experiments on data sets with different characteristics, the proposed algorithm has shown the outstanding advantages in comparison to the existing ones. In this paper, we present a hybrid genetic algorithm for the well-known nurse scheduling problem (NSP). The NSP involves the construction of roster schedules for nursing staff in order to maximize the quality of the roster schedule subject to various hard constraints. In the literature, several genetic algorithms have been proposed to solve the NSP under various assumptions. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we extensively compare the various crossover operators and test them on a standard dataset in a solitary approach. The paper describes a comparative study of multiple-objective metaheuristics on the bi-objective set covering problem. Ten representative methods based on genetic algorithms, multiple start local search, hybrid genetic algorithms and simulated annealing are evaluated in the computational experiment. Nine of the methods are well known from the literature. The paper introduces also a new hybrid genetic algorithm called Pareto memetic algorithm. The results of the experiment indicate very good performance of hybrid genetic algorithms, however, no algorithm was able to outperform all other methods on all instances. Furthermore, the results indicate that the performance of multiple-objective metaheuristics may differ radically even if the methods are based on the same single objective algorithm and use exactly the same problem-specific operators. Bilevel programming has been proposed for dealing with decision processes involving two decision makers with a hierarchical structure. They are characterized by the existence of two optimization problems in which the constraint region of the upper level problem is implicitly determined by the lower level optimization problem. In this paper a genetic algorithm is proposed for the class of bilevel problems in which both level objective functions are linear fractional and the common constraint region is a bounded polyhedron. The algorithm associates chromosomes with extreme points of the polyhedron and searches for a feasible solution close to the optimal solution by proposing efficient crossover and mutation procedures.
