Abstract: Based on the various fog remote sensing information products abstracted from the polar orbit meteorological satellite data (NOAA and FY), this paper analyzes the characteristics of the frequency and distribution that dense fogs have taken place in the Beijing district from 2001 to 2005. Among those information products, the statistical graph of the foggy days in Beijing from 2001 to 2005 by means of satellite remote-sensing reflects the frequency that dense fog has occurred in the different regions in Beijing; and the statistical graph of the foggy days of each season by satellite remote-sensing shows the characteristics of the temporal and spatial change of the fog distribution in Beijing in different seasons; the fog degree index(like pixel-level spatial measurement) by satellite remote-sensing reflects the fog frequency difference on unit area in different counties of Beijing. Meanwhile, based on the satellite remote-sensing pictures, data on the main meteorological elements that contribute to the formation of fog, geographic information, and DEM data, this paper makes an analysis in 3 areas, the traits of the fog distribution in the different regions of Beijing in different seasons; meteorological causes for temporal and spatial changes of the main fog types (advection fog, radiation fog). This paper also gave a brief introduction of the general principles of meteorological satellite remote sensing fog, fog information extraction method, as well as the process of satellite orbit selecting according to the ground visibility, data processing and product generation. Abstract: To improve the air quality during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the Beijing Municipal Government enforced a series of emission control measures. This provided a valuable case study to evaluate the effectiveness of these aggressive measures on mitigating air pollution and improving the atmospheric environment. In this paper, we report the first results of the chemical and Sr isotopic compositions of the rainwater in Beijing during the 2008 Olympic year. The ionic composition of samples show that Ca2+ and NH4 + were the dominant cations, accounting for about 76–97% of the total cations, and that SO4 2− and NO3 − were the major anions, accounting for 61–91% of the total anions measured. Using Na as the indicator of marine origin and Al as that of terrestrial inputs, the proportions of sea salt and terrestrial elements were estimated from elemental ratios. The calculated results indicate that the major chemical components were mainly of non-sea-salt origin. Good correlation between Ca2+ and Sr2+ (R 2 =0.85) in rainwater samples indicates the potential of Sr as a provenance tracer for Ca. Sr2+ concentrations in rainwater samples ranged from 0.01 to 2.87μmoll−1, with 87Sr/86Sr ratios from 0.7092 to 0.7109. All of the samples had a 87Sr/86Sr ratio higher than that of seawater. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic and elemental ratio systems show that the data set of rainwater was mainly distributed between the seawater end-member (~0.70917) and the soil dust end-member (0.7111–0.7115), and the analysis indicate that the effect of anthropogenic inputs could decrease in 2008. Comparisons of the chemical composition of the rainwater in different periods show that all chemical components, except NH4 +, had the lowest concentration levels during the Olympic Game period. The VWM concentrations of major ions in the rainwater decreased significantly during the Olympic period by up to 29% for SO4 2−, 39% for NO3 −, 38% for Ca2+, 51% for Mg2+, 57% for K+, and 44% for Na+, compared with the pre-control period. The concentrations of almost all species decreased during the 2008 Olympics, most likely due to both strict emission controls and favorable meteorological conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper warm cloud microphysical parameters including cloud droplet number concentration (N c), liquid water content (q l ) and effective radius (r e) from 75 flights around the Beijing area during 2005 and 2006 are summarized. Average N c (cm−3) for Cu, Sc, Ac, As and Ns are 376±290, 257±226, 147±112, 60±35 and 60±84, respectively. Many records of high N c above 1000 cm−3 are observed. The large standard deviations indicate a large variation of N c and q l in this region. The maxima of q l reach 1.4 g m−3 in Cu and 1.0 g m−3 in Sc, respectively. Different parameterizations of effective radius are examined with the in-situ data in this area. There are different ways to obtain the prefactor representing the relationship between effective radius and mean volume radius. Significant systematic errors are found to be at the large sizes when the prefactor is expressed with relative dispersion under the Gamma Distribution. Fixed prefactor of 1, which was widely used, even produces much larger error. A prefactor of 1.22 is found to be better than the former two methods by fitting with the observed data. The effective radius is further parameterized as functions of mean volume radius, liquid water content and cloud droplet number concentration. We suggest that the effective radius can be parameterized as r e,p ≈1.20r v +0.22–1.28/r v 2, which is a practical and more accurate scheme without too much computation complexity. Abstract: The formation of horizontal convective rolls (HCRs) in urban areas is investigated in this paper using observations and fine-scale numerical simulations. Cloud streets organized parallel to the mean boundary-layer wind (a manifestation of HCRs) are seen in the Fengyun-2C satellite imagery around local noon in Beijing. Observed vertical velocity and horizontal wind fields from an urban wind profiler suggest that the time scale for alternating updraft and downdraft in the boundary layer is about 30 min, and the length of the updraft/downdraft is about 9 km. Numerical simulations show that most HCRs occur in the urban areas with − z i / L <25 (z i : the boundary-layer depth, L: the Monin–Obukhov length). Sensitivity tests reveal that HCRs are common in urban boundary layers, while rural areas are more conducive to forming cellular convection; the aspect ratio of HCRs in urban areas is smaller than the typical value over natural landscapes. Substantial mitigation of air pollutants emissions has been performed since 2013 around Beijing, and changes in the atmospheric characteristics have been expected over the downstream area of Beijing. In this study, both WRF-Chem simulation and on-site measurements were utilized for the Baengnyeong (island) supersite, one of the representative regional background sites located in the Yellow Sea, the entrance area of the long-range transport process in Korea. The changes in the chemical compositions of inorganic aerosols were examined for spring-time during the Chinese emission mitigation period from 2014 to 2016. The measured ratio of ionic species to PM 2.5 at the Baengnyeong supersite showed changes in aerosol inorganic chemical compositions from sulfate in 2014 to nitrate in 2015–2016. The modeling results also showed that nitrate was low in 2014 and significantly increased in 2015 and 2016, and the acidic aerosol condition had also changed toward a more neutralized status in both the simulation and the observations. The WRF-Chem modeling study further indicated that the sulfur was not neutralized in 2014. However, in 2015 and 2016, SO 2 was more sufficiently neutralized as sulfur emissions were substantially reduced in China, while at the same time nitrate had begun to increase in such a 'SO 2 –poor' condition in Beijing area in China, and thus approaching more enhanced neutralization over the Yellow Sea area. The causes of the higher nitrate based on the modeled characteristics of the ammonia-sulfate-nitrate aerosol formation in response to the SO 2 emissions reduction in China are also discussed in this paper. Inorganic composition is changing from sulfate to nitrate, and aerosol acidity is approaching more enhanced neutralization over regional background area in Northeast Asia. This paper analyzes the characteristics of rain drop size distributions (DSDs) and vertical profiles of hydrometeors for a severe rainstorm event that occurred in Beijing, northern China, from 19 to 21 July 2016 using in situ measurements from two disdrometers (OTT-Parsivel2 and 2D-Video-Distrometer) and remote sensing data collected by a second-generation Micro Rain Radar (MRR2). This rainstorm was characterized by stratiform precipitation with embedded strong convection on 19 July and widespread, intense mixed convective-stratified rainfall resulting in persistent rainfall between 20 and 21 July. The temporal and spatial variations in rainfall rate R , liquid water content W , reflectivity Z , DSDs and the gamma DSD parameters in different precipitation episodes of this event are derived and compared between two meteorological stations in Beijing. Rainfall throughout the entire event was characterized by large concentrations of small- to medium-sized raindrops (diameters between 2 and 4 mm) and few larger particles (D > 4 mm), resulting in small values of reflectivity Z (<40 dBZ) and liquid water content W (<1.0 g m−3). In addition, the log 10 N w -D m scatter pairs recorded during the convective phase of this rainstorm indicate maritime-like convection. The time evolution of DSDs shows that most single peak DSDs occurred during stratiform rainfall, and bimodal DSDs were observed when the convective rainfall cells passed by and collisional breakups occurred. The gamma DSD model with a single peak in the stratiform phase of the storm and the bimodal DSD in the convective episode of the storm are quantitatively evaluated. In addition, in each precipitation episode, the differences in exponent b and coefficient A of the Z - R relationship between the two stations are smaller for stratiform rainfall than for convective rainfall due to the more evident variability of drop size and number concentration in convective rain. The physical nature of this relationship and the possible mechanisms leading to diverse characteristics in different phases of this heavy rainstorm are discussed. • The variations of DSD during a great rainstorm in northern China were investigated using 2DVD, Parsivel and MRR observation. • Most single-peak DSDs occurred in the stratiform rainfall, and the bimodal DSDs were observed in the convective rainfall. • The gamma distribution does not represent well the bimodal DSDs in higher rain rate (R >10 mm h-1). • The influence of the DSD characteristics on the Z -R relationships is investigated.
