Floodplain deposits in the valley of the Moskva River contain a series of buried soils of the Holocene age, which can be an important source of paleoecological information. These soils were dated as follows: Soil 1 — 100 BP, Soil 2 — cal 1200 AD–500 BC, Soil 3 — 900–2700 BC, and Soil 4 — 3700–6000 BC. Archeological monuments associated with these soils belong to the Neolithic (Soil 4), Early Bronze Age (Soil 3), and Iron Age and Middle Ages (Soil 2). Buried soils have well developed profiles and diagnostic features. Dark-colored soils of the Atlantic period (Soil 4) in most cases can be attributed to Phaeozems. Pollen analysis shows that these soils were formed under forest-steppe communities. Buried soils of the Subatlantic period (Soil 2) are usually referred to as Luvisols. Unlike them, the soils of the Subboreal period (Soil 3) are traced in rare cases and have no clear diagnostic features allowing reconstruction of the paleoenvironment. These soils have a light-colored humus horizon, which does not allow them to be classified as Phaeozems. However, they do not have the Bt horizon characteristic of Luvisols. This paper describes the results of a new comprehensive study of the Moskva River floodplain near the Zvenigorod Biological Station (ZBS) of Moscow State University. The buried soils of the Atlantic and Subboreal periods were studied by palaeopedological and palynological methods. The findings confirmed previously obtained results and indicated that the buried Soil 3 at the ZBS site could be developed under mixed forests dominated by spruce. These results suggest that the landscapes of the lower levels of the valley changed dramatically between 5000 and 4500 cal BP. The forest-steppe communities were replaced by dense forests due to the early Subboreal climate change. The paper also examines the specifics of soil and pollen records of the landscape evolution. Environmental fluctuations during the Holocene caused important landscape changes in the Central Ebro Basin, which is a very sensitive region due to its semiarid climate, lithology, and continuous human presence. Severe erosion processes hinder palaeoenvironmental and archaeological record preservation. Infills of ephemeral stream valleys in semiarid environments are some of the best contexts for geoarchaeological studies. In this paper, we analyse the geomorphological processes, pedological features, and charcoal and pollen content and composition of the sedimentary sequence of La Poza Valley catchment area, with the support of additional information from La Bajada Valley. 14 C dates for 13 charcoal fragments provide the necessary chronological control. We describe 5 sedimentary units and a polycyclic sequence of six soils that covers most of the Holocene, beginning ca. 9.5 ky cal BP. Buried soils help to identify stability periods in the sedimentary sequence, while incision stages are detected through erosive contacts and terraced organisation of the sedimentary units. Charcoal and pollen content and composition, as well as the soil development, reveal an open forest of junipers and pines for the Early Holocene in the lower part of the sequence (mainly in Unit 1), very different from the current deforested landscape, also represented in the sequence (Unit 4). Thus, La Poza record shows the environment was favourable for hunter-gatherers from the Late Mesolithic and for the first Neolithic farmers. From then on, progressive degradation due to a combination of climate changes and increasing human pressure led to the current deforested landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper presents alternating periods of geo-ecological fragility and stability in a highly sensitive environmental setting: the desert-margin area of southern Peru (14.5° S). There, we have to state that fragility was dominantly triggered by climatic changes, which induced several oscillations of the desert margin. During the mid-Holocene, the study area received the Holocene maximum of precipitation, soil formation occurred and the desert retreated, as loess–paleosoil formation documents. In contrast, the Titicaca region further south-east experienced extreme drought at that time. This regional antagonism between humid and dry conditions was a result of meridional shifts in moisture transport across the Andes and occurred also during pre-Columbian times. Considering a coincidence between environmental and cultural changes, we state that success and decline of civilizations were dominated by hydrological oscillations, triggering fertility as well as a critical loss of natural resources. Fragile periods, i.e. periods of geomorphological activity, occurred contemporaneous with cultural transitions. In response to spatial changing resources cultural foci were shifted. So, the success of pre-Columbian civilizations was closely coupled to areas of geo-ecological favorability, which were directly controlled by distinct regional impacts of large-scale circulation mechanisms, including El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This spatial view on non-uniform environmental and cultural changes has not been thoroughly considered before. This paper studies the changes in the geomorphological dynamics recorded in 18 ephemeral streams located on the east side of Loma Pelada (Tafi Valley), a part of the Sierras Subandinas (Northwest Argentina). The applied methodology is based on photointerpretation, field survey, and descriptions of the Holocene alluvial fillings dated by tephras, archaeological artefacts, and absolute datings. The records show a coupled system of slope-terrace-alluvial fans resulting from the environmental changes of four alternating aggradation/degradation stages. The oldest stage (1) was generated by climatic causes and covers Early to Mid-Holocene ( ca. 13,000–10,000 BP to ca. 4200 BP). After the incision of these accumulations, a new aggradation stage (2) was triggered by anthropogenic activity occurring from right before 2500 BP to the 15th century. During that time human occupations of the Tafí Valley were intense. Two wetter events occurred around 4200 and 2800 BP in the area, related to global cooling phases. Lastly, two more recent phases (3 and 4) are associated with the climatic variability of the LIA and the Present Warm Period. The results highlight the sensitivity of headwater catchments of dry subtropical mountainous areas to climate changes, anthropogenic impact, and their relationship with global climatic data. Mediterranean fluvial hydrology is characterised by decadal-to-multi-centennial length wet and dry episodes with abrupt transitions related to changes in atmospheric circulation. Since the mid-1990s site-based flood chronologies from slackwater deposits in bedrock rivers and regionally aggregated flood histories from alluvial deposits have developed increasingly higher resolution chronological frameworks, although regional coverage is still uneven. This paper analyses the spatial and temporal distribution of extreme Holocene hydrological events recorded in fluvial stratigraphy in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), southern France, southern Italy, Northern Africa (Morocco and Tunisia) and eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Crete, Turkey, Cyprus and Israel). This study constitutes the most comprehensive investigation of Holocene river flooding ever undertaken in the Mediterranean and is based on the analysis of 515 14 C and 53 OSL dates. It reveals that flood periods in different regions cluster into distinct time intervals, although region-wide flooding episodes can be identified at 7400–7150, 4800–4600, 4100–3700, 3300–3200, 2850–2750, 2300–2100, 1700–1600, 1500–1400, 950–800, ca. 300, 200–100 cal. BP. Periods with more frequent floods in the western Iberian region coincide with transitions to cool and wetter conditions and persistent negative NAO mode. In Northern Africa increased flood frequency coincides with periods of generally drier climate, while in the eastern Mediterranean there is a higher incidence of extreme flood events under wetter conditions. Our meta-data analysis identifies an out-of-phase pattern of extreme events across the Mediterranean over multi-centennial timescales, which is particularly evident between the western Iberian and eastern Mediterranean regions. Abstract: This paper presents the results of 40years of research on the gully system in the Doły Podmularskie catchment (0.35km² in size), which is situated in the south-western part of the loess-covered Nałęczów Plateau in SE-Poland. Topographic, stratigraphic and pedologic investigations, and monitoring of a tributary gully (gully area: 0.7ha, catchment: 2.5ha) were combined with historical, archaeological and palaeoecological records. The results reveal a long and complex history in terms of the temporal and spatial extent and the impact of land use on gully erosion, and the long-term feed-back mechanisms between land use changes and natural processes since the end of the Pleistocene. Phases of gully erosion and subsequent filling occurred in the Bronze Age and around the 10th to 11th centuries. The most severe deepening and expansion of the gully took place in the 17th century. The results also show that field structures and land use intensity had a significant influence on the frequency and magnitude of run-off, soil erosion, piping, and landslide events. The last significant erosion phase started in the mid-19th century with renewed headward retreat and down-cutting within older gully fills. Today, most of the catchment is either forested or the land is covered in berry shrubs. In the future, the area will continue to produce sediments, because of the steep slopes and because there are still areas of bare soil with a low resistance to erosion, a legacy from past land uses, which will remain a factor affecting soil erosion and sedimentation processes in the future. This study is an example of how important it is to observe and understand slow geomorphologic processes and rare extreme events in the light of land use changes when investigating long-term human–environment interactions. Abstract: Recent advances in geochronology provide opportunities to identify the glacial and periglacial sequences in mountain area. In this paper, we focus on the Upper Durance catchment (Southern French Alps), in the Clarée valley, where no absolute chronological benchmark was defined. Glacial remnants and periglacial features were investigated, integrated within a chronological scenario thanks to relative (weathering rind thickness) and absolute (CRE technique) dates. We find evidence of the existence of a Late-Glacial valley glacier, that has never been reported before. Then the upper valleys became ice-free during a period corresponding to the Early-Holocene Climate Optimum, whereas two sequences of cirque glaciation are identified during the second half of the Holocene. We also show evidence of three main generations of rockglaciers, which also mainly developed during the second half of the Holocene, probably at the end of the Subboreal period. The location and the altitudes of rockglaciers are strongly dependent on the geomorphic setting (especially the location of the sediment sources), hence complicating their palaeo-climatic interpretations. • Study at Luxmanda, Tanzania identified anthropogenic sediments dating to 3000 BP. • Anthropogenic sediment and ashy dung have ≥4-fold more nutrients than offsite samples. • Enriched sediments may have contributed to a more biodiverse and resilient ecosystem. In eastern Africa, ecologists have found that when mobile pastoralists abandon their temporary encampments, the accumulation of burned animal dung, wood, and other organic waste enriches the concentration of nutrients (e.g., calcium, phosphorous, magnesium) essential to soil health, in comparison to other soils without prior human habitation. These nutrient-enriched soils promote glade development and greater biodiversity. Geoarchaeological research on the time depth of this anthropogenic "nutrient hotspot" phenomenon has demonstrated that soils at several archaeological sites in southern Kenya still remain enriched in these soil macro- and micro- nutrients after several thousand years. However, soil scientists and geoarchaeologists do not yet understand how these anthropogenic soils vary over the extensive geographic conditions of eastern Africa. The discovery of a Pastoral Neolithic site (ca. 3000 BP) at Luxmanda on the Mbulu Plateau, Tanzania, provides an opportunity to examine if similar patterns of nutrient enrichment can be detected in a different geological and climatic zone. In this paper, we use geochemical and sedimentary analyses to determine how archaeological soils at Luxmanda differ from adjacent off-site soils and known archaeological soils in Kenya, as well as from computationally derived soil nutrient models for eastern Africa. Our results indicate that soils derived from anthropogenic sediments and ashy dung are 4 to 16-fold more abundant in soil macro nutrients relative to off-site or modeled values. This pattern fits previous studies' observations that elevated macro- and micro-nutrients in soils are strongly correlated with ancient pastoralist habitation sites. We conclude that anthropogenic soils found at Pastoral Neolithic archaeological sites may be a valuable, but unappreciated, soil resource in eastern Africa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Shijiahe Culture (ca. 4800–4100 yr BP), which originated in the middle Yangtze Basin, was a milestone of prehistoric Chinese civilization. To reveal the interactions between climatic changes and human activities during this time interval, the geochronology and multiple proxies (pollen and heavy metals) of samples from a 220-cm-deep outer wall at the Sanfangwan Site (a typical site of the Shijiahe Culture) were analyzed. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the age range of the Sanfangwan Site is ca. 4800 to 4100 cal. yr BP. From ca. 4800 to 4600 cal. yr BP (the early Shijiahe Culture), pollen assemblages were dominated by Gramineae and an anthropogenic plant community (e.g. Ranunculaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Labiatae, and Cruciferae), indicating an expansion in rice agriculture during this interval. High metal concentrations in the same interval indicate a large flux of metals from smelting and farming activities. Between ca. 4600 and 4100 cal. yr BP (the middle and late Shijiahe Culture), decreases in Gramineae and anthropogenic pollen mirrored the recession of farming. Concurrent decreases in heavy metals may be attributable to a decline in the smelting industry. Three episodes of high pollen concentrations and visible increases in hygrophyte pollen, Pinus pollen, and fern spores at 4600–4550, 4450–4350, and 4200–4100 cal. yr BP probably indicate the occurrence of several flooding events during the middle and late Shijiahe Culture, resulting in the migration of local inhabitants. Abstract: The paper presents a sedimentological, palynological, and phytolith record from a 13 m deep Holocene sedimentary sequence, located in the Tsoaing River valley, southwestern Lesotho. Six conventional radiocarbon and two AMS dates provide a relatively high resolution Holocene record for the sedimentary sequence, ranging from ca. 12000 to 4000 years BP. Pollen is absent in the upper section but present in the lower 2 m, confirming terminal Pleistocene/Holocene conditions reported in previous published pollen and charcoal records from the region. The absence of pollen in the upper layers of ca. 9000 years BP and younger suggests that conditions over southwestern Lesotho throughout much of the Holocene was typified by a seasonal climate that prevented long-term preservation of plant remains, although other plant material like robust spores, microscopic charcoal, and phytoliths withstood oxidation. Sedimentological and phytolith results suggest that the period from ca. 8600 to 8450 years BP experienced rapid environmental change towards drier conditions. Phases of chemical disintegration with organic input (including local swamp phytoliths) are suggested at ca. 7000 years BP and again after 4500 years BP. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The paper deals with the relationship between the temporal occurrence of landslides and climatic changes in the Italian Dolomites since the Late glacial. After an introduction on the state of the art, with particular reference to the Alpine region, the results of recent investigations in the two study sites are illustrated. At Cortina d''Ampezzo, several landslides were dated mainly by the radiocarbon method. The most ancient landslide event there involved large rock slides, which affected the dolomitic slopes following the withdrawal of glaciers after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and also slides and flows mainly occurring in pelitic materials of the valley floors (from 13,000 to 10,000 cal BP). A later series of flows occurred between 5500 and 2500 cal BP. In the Upper Badia Valley (Alta Badia), the most ancient events go back to 10,000 and 9000 cal BP, and correspond with earth flows that followed vast rotational slides affecting the bedrock up to a depth of about 50 m. More recent earth flows, involving more modest amounts of material, took place between 6500 and 2300 cal BP.By analysing the dates from the two study areas, it was possible to correlate the recorded increase of landslide activity with the climatic changes occurring at the boundary between the Late glacial and the Holocene and between the Atlantic and the Subboreal, and to compare the results with those derived from other European regions. The types and causes of landslides taking place in these two periods were substantially different, reflecting the different morphoclimatic conditions that existed in the two areas when these mass movements were triggered. Finally, notwithstanding the importance of non-climatic causes, such as geological–structural factors and possible human influences, it is concluded that many of the dated landslides can be considered as indicators of climatic change. The responding mechanism of wetland ecosystem to climate change is currently unclear due to a lack of long-term records incorporating multiple ecological factors. This paper presents a well-dated and multi-proxy cored record from a natural freshwater wetland developed in a paleo-pingo-related depression on the Sanjiang Plain. The study aims to reconstruct the wetland water-level and vegetational regimes during the past ~6.0 ka BP and discuss the wetland evolution response to the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) circulation. The results show that a shallow-water lake with hygrophilous herbs developed in the depression with a strong EASM during ~6.0–4.5 ka BP. The paleolake was succeeded by a wetland with a lowered mean water level and an increase in tree cover controlled by the weakened EASM during the past 4.5 ka BP. Such an ecological lake-to-wetland transition corresponds well to the sharp decline of the EASM around 4.5 ka BP which has been well documented in various geological records across the EASM domain. During the wetland developing stage over the past 4.5 ka BP, the water-level and vegetational changes in the studied depression were also closely related to the EASM variations. The strengthened EASM usually generated higher water levels with more hygrophilous herbs around 4.0 ka BP, 3.5 ka BP, 3.0 ka BP, 2.0 ka BP, and 1.3 ka BP. Considering the prevalent EASM climate serving as the predominant water supply for the wetlands on the modern Sanjiang Plain, we suggest the EASM circulation has played a critical role in driving the wetland ecological evolution during the mid-to-late Holocene Epoch. The past 0.4 ka BP is an exception as the local Trees/Herbs ratio visibly increased with the declined water level, while the monsoonal precipitation shows no equivalent shift. This paper presents a multi-proxy geoarchaeological analysis of the complex pedo-sedimentary archives of a small pond situated within the protohistoric site of Corent, in central France. A robust chrono-stratigraphic framework was developed integrating all chronological data from previous studies. Micromorphological, geochemical and sedimentological analyses were performed on a radiocarbon-dated core. Results are discussed alongside palynological data from previous work on the same core, in order to reconstruct human-environmental interactions on the Corent volcanic plateau since the Neolithic. After intense soil erosion recorded during the Early and Middle Neolithic, the Late Neolithic is characterized by vegetation recovery and soil stability in the basin contemporaneous with site abandonment, perhaps due to pronounced soil degradation in the plateau. During the Early Bronze Age, agropastoral land use contributed to major environmental changes in the pond's basin, including soil profile sealing and gleyfication. Environmental impact patterns detected in the pedo-sedimentary record indicate settlement intensification during the Middle Bronze Age. After the substantial impacts of an intense anthropogenic disturbance in the Early Iron Age, the Lac du Puy becomes a vertic depression recurrently flooded while a late Iron Age Gallic oppidum develops on the plateau, and is finally backfilled at the end of the Iron Age. The detailed multi-proxy picture from this intra-urban wetland helps nuance our understanding of the environmental impacts of prehistoric societies in Western Europe. Many regions around the world experienced abrupt climate change with far-reaching societal and environmental effects at ca. 4.2 cal. ka BP. As one of the most distinct climatic events of the last 11.7 ka, it has been used to establish the formal boundary between the mid- and late-Holocene. Although the 4.2 ka event was not pronounced in East-Central Europe, its exact impact on the area has yet to be evaluated. The aim of this paper is twofold: (1) to reconstruct the functioning of the selected lake and terrestrial ecosystems from northern Poland around the time of the 4.2 ka event, and (2) to disentangle the drivers of the recorded environmental changes (local factors vs. climate impact). We studied the sedimentary record of Lake Spore, focusing on the period between 3.8 and 4.5 cal. ka BP using numerous biotic and abiotic proxies, such as chironomids, cladocerans, pollen and spores, δ13C org , δ15N org , δ18O carb , δ13C carb , TOC/N, Fe, S, LOI 550 , and LOI 950. The chironomid-derived reconstruction of mean July air temperature did not change during the 4.2 ka event. Pollen accumulation rate (PAR) data showed lower pollen production of some tree taxa during the period 4.0–4.25 cal. ka BP that is consistent with low PARs recorded for the corresponding period in the sediments of nearby (~75 km) Lake Suminko. This change might have occurred due to either regional-scale forest disturbance or cooler winters resulting from an exceptionally strong Siberian High during the 4.2 ka event. Distinct peaks of Fe and δ13C carb at 4.2 cal. ka BP likely record a pulse of podzolization. Although soil transformation processes were common in East-Central Europe after ca. 5 cal. ka BP due to general climate cooling, they could have been enhanced at Lake Spore during the 4.2 ka event, if winters were more severe. The δ13C org , δ15N org , TOC/N and δ18O carb records point to a water level rise after 4.2 cal. ka BP that most likely resulted from soil transformation in the catchment, not a change in effective precipitation. Alluvial fans occur in all climatic and tectonic environments. However, most descriptions of fan features and sediments have focused on arid and semiarid regions. This paper describes the sediments and soil ages on 63 alluvial fans in a subhumid climate (mean annual precipitation of 45–52 cm). SSURGO soil data were merged with geologic and topographic data in the ArcMap© GIS platform to develop a series of maps showing variations across fan surfaces in sediment textures and surface stability ages. Particle size data (percent cobble and percent total gravel) from the upper 150 cm of sediments cluster into six textural groups that are aligned along a trend of decreasing gravel percentage (decreasing stream capacity) and decreasing cobble percentage (decreasing stream competency). The groups of higher cobble and gravel percentages extend from fan apex to toe in both the shallow (<50 cm depth) and deeper (>100 cm depth) layers with groups of lower cobble and gravel percentage occurring along fan margins in the shallow (<50 cm depth) layer. The thickness of B and Bt horizons from representative soil profiles were used to calculate proportional soil ages based on 10Be residence times in loessial Bt horizons and correlation of gravelly fan soils to similar gravelly soils on nearby Pinedale outwash. This approach identified six stability episodes since the end of the Bull Lake beginning at ~100 ka, ~38 ka, ~27 ka, ~16 ka, ~10 ka, and <2 ka. The proportional soil ages correlate closely with fan chronologies constrained by TL and OSL ages in nearby areas. Soil ages and sediment textural groups differed between fan populations along the mountain front with active faulting and those along the stable mountain front. Fan stability surfaces older than 16 ka are preserved only at fault termini. Holocene faulting resulted in fans with (1) coarser sediments, (2) younger sediments, (3) progressive onlap of younger sediments, (4) the absence of relic fan surfaces, landslides and colluvium at the mountain front, and (5) the onlap of alluvial fans onto the floodplain of the axial stream. Sediment pulses related to individual fault events could not be definitively identified because of concurrent climatic changes.
