The author describes the process of making tiles in his studio in Natal, South Africa. First, he made a plaster slab a bit larger than he needed: 110x140x8 cm. He then cut four wooden battens the thickness he needed and one extra for scraping away the excess clay. He waxed them so that the clay would not stick when drying. The mix he used is composed of four buckets of dry shredded paper with three buckets of his usual stoneware slip. He add 20% grog to this mix. He poured the paper/clay mixture into the formwork and rapidly agitate it with his fingers to make sure it is well mixed.
