The article summarizes the most current information on the prevalence, nature and treatment of exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) for medical personnel, athletes and the public to help prevent morbidity and mortality associated with the disorder, as compiled by a panel of 18 international experts at the Second International Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia (EAH) Consensus Development Conference in New Zealand in November 2007. The panel represented seven countries and eight specialties related to exercise physiology, sports medicine, water metabolism and body fluid homeostatis. Included in the summary are EAH classification, treatment protocols and dissemination of advice.
