Abstract: This paper presents a generalization of the ABC compensation theory based on mathematical optimization which integrates the neutral losses into the optimization model. The classical ABC theory is shown to be a particular case of the presented generalized compensation approach. The main contribution of this paper is the generalization of the ABC theory considering conflictive objectives which include among them the minimization of the network losses. The work presented here takes into account not only conventional balanced and pure sinusoidal voltage source but also unbalances and harmonic distortions on the voltage. Four different compensation objectives are studied: invariant instantaneous power, constant power, unity power factor, and pure sinusoidal current. Through these four cases, the flexibility and simplicity of implementation of this approach is demonstrated. In addition, the proposed compensation strategy optimizes the line currents and therefore minimizes the network losses. Abstract: Use of power electronic equipment has increased and introduced new dynamical phenomena in power systems. For example, new electric rail vehicles (locomotives) equipped with modern power electronic traction chains have caused situations of low-frequency power oscillations and instability in single-phase railway power supply systems. This paper presents the development and implementation of an instantaneous value model and simplified fundamental frequency (RMS) models of such an advanced electric rail vehicle in order to investigate their representation of low-frequency dynamics. The dynamical behaviour is studied by use of both time-domain simulations and linear analysis (eigenvalues) and the degree of simplifications regarding controller dynamics and power system dynamics are presented and discussed. An enhanced RMS model is tested in order to account for the impact of fast current dynamics on the low-frequency behaviour. The results show that this enhanced model is corresponding more closely to the instantaneous value model than what can be obtained by the traditional RMS simplifications and indicate that current dynamics should be included in stability studies involving power electronic inverters. • The proposed aggregation model of the wind farm shows a high precision in frequency domain. • The proposed aggregation model is convenient for the stability analysis of large-scale grid-connected wind farms. • Wind speed distribution will influence wind farm impedance characteristics greatly. • The inertial controller has negative impacts on the stability of the wind farm system. With the wind power penetration rate continuously rising, a suitable wind farm model considering both accuracy and simplicity is required for power system stability analysis. To accomplish this goal, an accurate aggregated modified sequence impedance model of the wind farm is established in this paper. The modified sequence impedance model of wind turbine generator is established, which considers the coupling between the positive- and negative-sequence impedances. The modified sequence impedances of the ac collection system, transformers, and ac grid are also derived. In this way, the impedance network of the entire wind farm system can be formed and simplified to acquire the accurate aggregated modified sequence impedance. Furthermore, the proposed model is compared with the traditional single-machine aggregated model which shows the necessity of establishing the accurate aggregated model. It is worth noting that the differences among each wind turbine generator's operation points can be included in the proposed model. Compared with the results of impedance measurements of a target wind farm, the accuracy of the proposed aggregated sequence impedance model of the wind farm is verified in frequency domain. The application of the proposed model in the stability analysis of a grid-connected wind farm is also presented with consideration of the ac grid strength.
