In spite of the fact that the flexibility of the crankshaft of diesel engines exhibits notable nonlinearities, analytical modeling of such nonlinearities is not yet realized. The present study thus analytically models the effect of eccentricity on flexible crankshaft and piston secondary motion. The eccentricity of the crankshaft is modeled as the summation of the hydrodynamic eccentricity and the dynamic mass eccentricity of the crankshaft. The study also models the absolute value of the vibrational dynamic displacement of the center of the crankshaft. The paper proves that such dynamic displacement of the center of the crankshaft is sensitive to the changes in its independent variables. It was found that the most influential parameters on the dynamic displacement of the center of the crankshaft due to vibration are the natural frequency and the eccentricity of the crankshaft. The modeling of the dynamic displacement in a flexible crankshaft was validated using a case study based on the eccentricity of the crankshaft showing a relative error of 4%, which is less than the relative error in the CMEM and GT-Power. Furthermore, the analytical modeling of the dynamic displacement in the flexible crankshaft was validated using another case study based on fatigue analysis of the crankshaft showing a relative error of 9%, which is less than that the relative error in Newman's model of diesel engine fuel consumption and Lansky's model of diesel engine cylinders. The paper also presents a proposed approach of fatigue failure analysis for vehicular dynamic components and presents a proposed nanostructure of crankshafts for improving such fatigue performance. Long-term erosion and repeated scouring of water significantly affect the technical properties of coals, which are the essential elements that must be considered in evaluating an underground reservoir coal column dam's standing sustainability. In the paper, the coal pillar dam body of the 22 layers of coal in the Shangwan Coal Mine is studied (22 represents No. 2 coal seam), and the water content of this coal pillar dam body is simplified into two types of different water content and dry–wet cycle. Through acoustic emission detection technology and energy dissipation analysis method, the internal failure mechanism of coal water action is analyzed. This study revealed three findings. (1) The crest pressure, strain, and resilient modulus in the coal sample were inversely related to the water content along with the dry–wet cycle number, while the drying–wetting cycle process had a certain time effect on the failure to the sample. (2) As the moisture content and the dry–wet cycle times incremented, three features were shown: first, the breakage pattern is the mainly stretching fracture for the coal specimen; second, the number and absolute value of acoustic emission count peaks decrease; third, the RA-AF probability density plot (RA is the ratio of AE Risetime and Amplitude, and AF is the ratio of AE Count and Duration) corresponds more closely to the large-scale destruction characteristics for the coal samples. (3) A higher quantity of wet and dry cycles results in a smoother energy dissipation curve in the compacted and flexible phases of the crack, indicating that this energy is released earlier. The research results can be applied to the long-term sustainability assessment of the dams of coal columns for underground reservoirs and can also serve as valuable content to the excogitation of water-bearing coal column dams under similar engineering conditions. Series arc faults cause the majority of household fires involving electrical failures or malfunctions. Low-fault current amplitude is the reason for the difficulties faced in implementing effective arc detection systems. The paper presents a novel arc detection and faulty line identification method. It can be easily used in the low-voltage Alternate Current (AC) household network for arc detection in the Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM). Unlike existing methods, the proposed approach exploits both current and voltage signal time domain analysis. Experiments have been conducted with up to six devices operating simultaneously in the same circuit with an arc fault generator based on the IEC 62606:2013 standard. Sixteen time-domain features were used to maximize the arc-fault detection accuracy for particular appliances. Performance of the random forest classifier for arc fault detection was evaluated for 28 sets of features with five different sampling rates. For the single period analysis arc, detection accuracy was 98.38%, with F-score of 0.9870, while in terms of the IEC 62606:2013 standard, it was 99.07%, with F-score of 0.9925. Location of a series arc fault (line selection) was realized by identifying devices powered by the faulty line. The line selection was based on the Mean Values of Changes feature vector (MVC50), calculated for absolute values of differences between adjacent current signal periods during the arc fault. This paper proposes the implementation, analysis and comparison of the control techniques Proportional, Integral and Derivative, Nonlinear Predictive, Fuzzy control and Sliding Mode Control technique applied to the speed control of an independent excited DC motor driven by a three-phase fully controlled rectifier of six pulses. The methodology proposes the design of the bench, modeling of the real system by the system identification method and the adjustments of the parameters of the controllers using an optimization process. Comparisons are made between the techniques, highlighting their characteristics and performances when executed under similar conditions. The robustness of each control, when acting on a nonlinear system, is investigated. All control techniques are applied in three different tests: (i) reference signal of step type without load application, (ii) reference signal with amplitude variation without load application and (iii) reference signal of step type with load application. The smallest value of the integral of the absolute percentage error for the first test is 2.01% with the Fuzzy control, for the second test is 3.34% with the nonlinear predictive control and for the third test it is 1.41% also with the nonlinear predictive control. The techniques present satisfactory performance in the execution of the proposed control, depending, therefore, on the analysis of the system to be implemented to determine the appropriate method. The paper describes the method of investigations of exhaust emissions from a combustion engine under operation classified in terms of its dynamic states. In this paper, the engine operating states are determined through the vehicle driving under actual traffic conditions in the RDE (Real Driving Emissions) test. Based on the recorded tracings of the vehicle velocity, the engine states were classified as static for the acceleration of the absolute value lower than the adopted classification limit. Besides, the authors analyzed the engine operating states for the positive as well as negative acceleration. For the adopted engine operating states, zero-dimensional characteristics of the emission intensity for individual exhaust components were determined (average value, coefficient of variation). The influence of the analyzed operating states on the emission of individual exhaust components was assessed. The greatest increase in the intensity of the emission of nitrogen oxides was observed for the positive vehicle acceleration model and the lowest (also for the nitrogen oxides) for the negative vehicle acceleration. On average, the greatest increase in the emission intensity of pollutants and the intensity of particle number occurred for the dynamic states of the engine corresponding to positive acceleration. The conclusions from the performed investigations entitle the authors to propose a greater allowance for the exhaust emission-related criteria in the engine control algorithms. In this paper, the design of the terminal continuous-time sliding mode controller is presented. The influence of the external disturbances is considered. The robustness for the whole regulation process is obtained by adapting the time-varying sliding line. The representative point converges to the demand state in finite time due to the selected shape of the nonlinear switching curve. Absolute values of control signal, system velocity and both of these quantities are bounded from above and considered as system constraints. In order to evaluate the dynamical performance of the system, the settling time is selected as a quality index and it is minimized. The approach presented in this paper is particularly suited for systems in which one state (or a set of states) is the derivative of the other state (or a set of states). This makes it applicable to a wide range of electromechanical systems, in which the states are the position and velocity of the mechanical parts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, discrete time reaching law-based sliding mode control of continuous time systems is considered. In sliding mode control methods, usually the assumption of bounded absolute values of disturbances is used. However in many cases, the rate of change of the disturbance is also bounded. In the presented approach, this knowledge is used to improve the control precision and reduce the undesirable chattering. Another advantage of the proposed method is that the disturbance does not have to satisfy the matching conditions. In the paper two new reaching laws are analyzed, one of them ensures the switching quasi-sliding motion and the other the non-switching motion. For both of them, the robustness is assessed by calculating the quasi-sliding mode band width, as well as the greatest possible state error values. Specifically, the state errors are not considered only at the sampling instants, as is usual for discrete time systems, but the bounds on the continuous values "between" the sampling instants are also derived. This paper presents results of research on unevenness of cylinder heating in a furnace for thermo-chemical treatment. Experimental research was conducted with respect to nitriding. Various heating speeds and settings of the fan operation in the furnace were considered. Boundary conditions were calculated in the form of temperature and the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on the cylinder boundary in four planes along the cylinder length. Calculations were performed with the use of the inverse problem for non-linear and unsteady heat conduction equations. Boundary conditions from individual planes were compared with the mean value of them all. The variability of the calculated boundary conditions (temperature and HTC) along the cylinder length was investigated based on values of the absolute and relative differences for temperature and HTC. Estimates: mean value, mean value from the absolute value and the maximum values for the absolute and the relative differences of temperature and HTC were also calculated. Estimates were the measurements of the unevenness of cylinder heating in a furnace for thermo-chemical treatment. Based on the results of our research, it was found that an increase of the fan rotational speed from 50% to 100%, with the same heating speed, resulted in a significant leveling of temperature in the analyzed planes. The difference in temperature along the cylinder length was reduced from 6.8 °C to 3.3 °C. The increase of the heating speed from 5 °C/min to 10 °C/min resulted in an increase of the unevenness of the cylinder heating. Values of the absolute differences of temperature in the analyzed planes with reference to the mean temperature changed from an interval from −2.7 °C to 2.3 °C to a range from −4 °C to 5 °C. In processes with a heating speed greater than 5 °C/min, more intensive heating in the end part of the cylinder (close to the cylinder) was achieved than it was in other planes. It was proven by temperature values, which were higher, even, by 5.4 °C, and by HTC values, higher by 11.4 W/m2K, when compared with mean values. The most efficient energy management strategies for hybrid vehicles are the "Optimization-Based Strategies". These strategies require a preliminary knowledge of the driving cycle, which is not easy to predict. This paper aims to combine Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) low section short trips with real traffic levels for vehicle energy and fuel consumption prediction. Future research can focus on implementing a new strategy for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) energy optimization, taking into account WLTC and Google Maps traffic levels. First of all, eight characteristic parameters are extracted from real speed profiles, driven in urban road sections in the city of Messina at different traffic conditions, and WLTC short trips as well. The minimum distance algorithm is used to compare the parameters and assign the three traffic levels (heavy, average, and low traffic level) to the WLTC short trips. In this way, for each route assigned from Google maps, vehicle's energy and fuel consumption are estimated using WLTC short trips remodulated with distances and traffic levels. Moreover, a vehicle numerical model was implemented and used to test the accuracy of fuel consumption and energy prediction for the proposed methodology. The results are promising since the average of the percentage errors' absolute value between the experimental driving cycles and forecast ones is 3.89% for fuel consumption, increasing to 6.80% for energy. Electricity provides a crucial service in our daily lives. However, in electricity systems mostly based on conventional, fossil-fuel fired technologies, an increase in electricity demand also leads to higher greenhouse gas emissions and, in countries without fossil-fuel resources, also increases their dependence on foreign energy sources. In more decarbonised electricity systems, with a high penetration of variable renewable energy sources, strong increases in electricity demand lead to higher system costs, given the need for back-up. Therefore, identifying the drivers of electricity demand is an academically-relevant, but also a policy-relevant exercise, since specific policy measures can be linked to those drivers. The aim of this paper is to assess the drivers of electricity demand in Spain in the period immediately after the economic crisis (2013–2017), with the help of a unique database of Spanish households and econometric modeling. Our results show that electricity demand in this period has mostly been driven by price changes. Demand has been highly price-elastic, with price elasticities being much higher (in absolute values) than in previous studies and periods. It is also negatively driven by the features of the household and its breadwinners (whether they are single-parent households or its members are foreign residents) and positively driven by income, the hours of sun and temperature changes, although the influence of these variables is much lower. In contrast, other variables do not seem to have an influence on demand, including the age of the breadwinners and their working situation (whether they are unemployed or not). These results suggest that price-based instruments, i.e., measures with an impact on electricity prices, would be the most effective to curb electricity demand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Integrated electrical and heating networks (IEHNs) effectively improve energy utilization efficiency, reduce environmental pollution and realize sustainable development of energy. To realize the accurate, comprehensive and fast perception of the integrated electrical and heating networks, it is necessary to build a state estimation model. However, the robust state estimator of IEHNs based on the temperature drop equation, flow balance equation and power balance equation still have the problems of convergence and low computational efficiency. In this paper, a fast state estimation method based on weighted least absolute value is proposed, which makes partition calculation of ring-shaped heating network and radiant heating network under certain assumptions. With increasing interest in clean energy generation in the transportation sector, increasing attention has been given to polymer-electrolyte-membrane fuel cells as viable power sources. One issue, the widespread application of this technology faces, is the insufficient knowledge regarding the transient behaviour of fuel cells, for instance, following a short-circuit event. In this paper, an agglomerate model is presented and validated, which enables the transient simulation of short-circuit events to predict the resulting peak current and discharge of the double layer capacity. The model allows for the incorporation of detailed morphological and compositional information regarding all fuel cell components. This information is used to calculate the reaction rate, diffusional and convectional species transfer, and the momentum transport. It can be shown that the charge in the double layer capacitance of the fuel cell is key to predicting the peak current and its charge is dependent on the operating conditions of the fuel cell. Further, the effects of the magnitude of the double layer capacity, current rise time and stoichiometry on the dynamic behaviour of the fuel cell are investigated. It can be shown that the discharge of the double layer capacity proceeds from the membrane through the catalyst layer to the gas diffusion layer and that the stoichiometry of the gas supply does not significantly change the absolute peak value of the short-circuit current. Introducing integrated, automatic control to buildings operating with the environmental quality management (EQM) system, we found that existing energy models are not suitable for use in integrated control systems as they poorly represent the real time, interacting, and transient effects that occur under field conditions. We needed another high-precision estimator for energy efficiency and indoor environment and to this end we examined artificial neural networks (ANNs). This paper presents a road map for design and evaluation of ANN-based estimators of the given performance aspect in a complex interacting environment. It demonstrates that in creating a precise representation of a mathematical relationship one must evaluate the stability and fitness under randomly changing initial conditions. It also shows that ANN systems designed in this manner may have a high precision in characterizing the response of the building exposed to the variable outdoor climatic conditions. The absolute value of the relative errors ( M a x A R E ) being less than 1.4% for each stage of the ANN development proves that our objective of monitoring and EQM characterization can be reached.
