In the face of a changing climate, a growing number of construction firms are adopting carbon reduction targets on individual projects and across their portfolios. In the wake of the Paris Agreement, some firms are seeking a means of aligning their targets with sectoral, national and international mitigation commitments. There are numerous ways by which such an alignment can be achieved, each requiring different assumptions. Using data from the UK construction industry, this paper reviews current company commitments and progress in carbon mitigation; analyses the unique challenges in aligning construction targets, and presents a series of possible sectoral decarbonisation trajectories. The results highlight the disparity between current company targets and the range of possible trajectories. It is clear that a cross-industry dialogue is urgently required to establish an appropriate response that delivers both a widely-accepted target trajectory and a plan for its delivery. This paper is intended to stimulate and support this necessary debate by illustrating the impact of different methodological assumptions and highlighting the critical features of an appropriate response. Highlights • The aim of this research is to investigate the thermal performance of the prototype building to assess overheating in the summer, particularly the long-term heatwave period in the UK. • To understand the impact of energy efficient technologies on occupants' wellbeing and health in order to identify occupants' thermal comfort level in these types of dwellings. • The study adopts a quantitative research design based on indoor monitoring, in-situ measurements and dynamic simulation modelling. • This clearly indicates that due to this prototype house's structural construction material behaviour in a heatwave and its location (southwest facing orientation), it is susceptible to very high overheating risk. • The results found from the monitoring during a long-term heatwave in the summer of 2018 provided strong evidence for overheating and thereby thermal discomfort in many occupied spaces, particularly on the first floor followed by several spaces on the ground floor. Meanwhile, all the occupied spaces appeared to be well above the acceptable thermal comfort benchmark throughout the data collection period. • To calibrate the building performance, as well as the building materials and components adopted in the model, the measured indoor environment data were scrutinised in conjunction with the IES simulation results. Abstract There is growing evidence that terraced houses—thermally lightweight, well insulated, naturally ventilated with three exposed wall surfaces—are at risk of overheating, especially in south-eastern England. The aim of this study is to evaluate the building performance and develop a reliable building simulation, which will be employed in the second phase of the study: developing affordable and feasible passive design strategies to support the energy-efficient building systems of the construction industry. This paper reports on the results from the first phase of the study where a quantitative methodology, including indoor and outdoor environmental monitoring, in-situ measurements and building simulation modelling, was adopted. The performance of a case study was modelled and simulated via employing Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) software suite. The results from the base-case were analysed according to the adaptive thermal comfort of Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Technical Memorandum 52 guidelines: The Limits of Thermal Comfort—Avoiding Overheating in European Buildings. The spaces studied within the case study house were observed to exceed the acceptable limits of thermal comfort; particularly, the large bedroom within this zone exceeded the upper limit for overheating up to 11 h daily. Furthermore, the results from the monitoring study indicate a high risk of summertime overheating across all the case study settings, especially during short-term peaks in outdoor temperatures. The main reasons for the problematic thermal performance were identified as well-insulated and fully air-tight building fabric, the lack of sufficient ventilation through the living spaces and excessive heat gains through the composite cladding material. Abstract: A lecture theatre with dimension 16m×8.4m×3.6m located at Roorkee (28.58°N, 77.20°E) in the northern region of India, is selected to calculate the monthly and annual cooling load (kWh) and cooling capacity of air conditioning system by a computer simulation. The paper also presents the results of a study investigating the effect of different glazing systems on windows and the reduction in building cooling load. DesignBuilder software has been used for the computer simulation for calculating the cooling load. The paper aims to investigate the reduction in thermal gains and cooling load requirements by varying the U-values of different glazing types, insulating the ceiling, providing cool roofs, interior and exterior insulation on walls, and replacing the conventional fluorescent tube lamp (FTL) by energy efficient compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). Installation of false ceiling, wall insulation, different glazing types and lighting systems are cost effective with normalized annual saving ranging from 17% to 19.8% from this retrofitting project. Furthermore, the study also highlights the potential of reducing the emission of CO2 and equivalent carbon credit. Retrofitting techniques strongly influence the level of energy saving, although the payback period is generally quite long of order 8years. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The subject of this paper is the residential buildings’ thermal performance and comfort in the city of São Paulo, taking into account the climate changes and the greater vulnerability of the elderly related to the environmental conditions. The aim is the evaluation of thermal performance and comfort in residential buildings under the RCP 8.5 scenario from the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, as well as under the heat wave occurred in January and February 2014. This study is based on real case studies and computer simulations carried out using EDSL TAS. Three elderly dwellings were surveyed and monitored aiming the comparison between measurements and computer simulation to calibrate the models. For the computer simulations, simulated and measured climate data were employed. Results were analyzed comparing comfort conditions in the different climate scenarios and among the case studies, following two adaptive comfort indexes selected for this study. Analysis revealed a tendency of change in comfort conditions following the progression of the climate scenarios, showing an increase in heat sensation and a decrease in cold sensation. The results show that the combination of both phenomena, climate change and heat wave, may lead to a potential effect of heat discomfort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In the tropics, daylighting from a side window requires shading to intercept direct sunlight from the window whilst allowing penetration of daylight from sky. In this paper, daylighting from a double-pane glazed window with enclosed horizontal slats (slat window) was investigated for which it is situated on either north or south wall of a room. Full-scale experiments and simulations were conducted to characterize distribution of the interior daylight from the slat window under a real tropical climate. Performance of the slat window was evaluated in terms of the “useful daylight illuminance” (UDI), interior daylight availability and light power density (LPD) of an integrated dimmable lighting system. Empirical formulas were developed for determining annual average LPD values of the dimmable lighting system over its served area. The LPD value can be used with a reduced form of the energy equation of Thailand's building energy code to evaluate the reduced annual electrical energy consumption for accreditation of the daylight use in a building. The analysis of life cycle cost proved that the daylighting from the slat window integrated with the dimmable lighting system is cost effective. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Low Carbon Futures project, funded by the Adaptation and Resilience in a Changing Climate (ARCC) Programme, has the objective of using the latest UK climate projections (UKCP’09) to assess overheating in a range of domestic and non-domestic buildings. As these climate projections are probabilistic in nature, and dynamic building simulation is being used by the project to assess building performance, the information produced is vast. To understand how to filter this data into a useable tool that can interact with current building practices, the project has commissioned a range of focus groups to obtain practitioner feedback. These focus groups provide guidance on how buildings are currently designed with respect to overheating but also how future overheating risk assessments, incorporating probabilistic climate projections, might be carried out. This paper describes the assimilation of all this research into a coherent building simulation methodology that could be used by building practitioners to assess future overheating risks of a range of buildings, and provide guidance for applying adaptation solutions to prevent defined comfort thresholds being exceeded. Abstract: Experimental and theoretical analyses have been performed to determine dynamic thermal characteristics of fiber insulations containing microencapsulated phase change material (PCM). It was followed by a series of transient computer simulations to investigate the performance of a wood-framed wall assembly with PCM-enhanced fiber insulation in different climatic conditions. A novel lab-scale testing procedure with use of the heat flow meter apparatus (HFMA) was introduced in 2009 for the analysis of dynamic thermal characteristics of PCM-enhanced materials. Today, test data on these characteristics is necessary for whole-building simulations, energy analysis, and energy code work. The transient characteristics of PCM-enhanced products depend on the PCM content and a quality of the PCM carrier. In the past, the only existing readily-available method of thermal evaluation of PCMs utilized the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) methodology. Unfortunately, this method required small and relatively uniform test specimens. This requirement is unrealistic in the case of many PCM-enhanced building envelope products. Small specimens are not representative of PCM-based blends, since these materials are not homogeneous. In this paper, dynamic thermal properties of materials, in which phase change processes occur, are analyzed based on a recently-upgraded dynamic experimental procedure: using the conventional HFMA. In order to theoretically analyze performance of these materials, an integral formula for the total heat flow in finite time interval, across the surface of a wall containing the phase change material, was derived. In numerical analysis of the southern-oriented wall the Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) weather data was used for the summer hot period between June 30th and July 3rd. In these simulations the following three climatic locations were used: Warsaw, Poland, Marseille, France, and Cairo, Egypt. It was found that for internal temperature of 24°C, peak-hour heat gains were reduced by 23–37% for Marseille and 21–25% for Cairo; similar effects were observed for Warsaw. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Many parameters have been used to evaluate the thermal performance of envelope wall/roofs, most of them for air-conditioned buildings. In this paper, the interest is focused on parameters to assess the thermal performance of envelope wall/roofs for non air-conditioned buildings. Five groups of parameters, some previously used and some newly proposed, have been analyzed. To test the evaluation parameters, numerical simulations of the periodic heat transfer through five different roof configurations have been carried out. This research shows the suitability of the energy transferred through the wall/roof during a day, the decrement factor, the discomfort degree hours, and the hot (or cold) thermal performance index to be used for thermal evaluation of wall/roofs in non air-conditioned buildings. The sensitivity of these parameters with climatic conditions and with the outdoor surface solar absorptance is analyzed. Additionally, it has been shown that the steady-state thermal transmittance, the thermal admittance modulus, the periodic thermal transmittance modulus, and the surface decrement factor, calculated with surface temperatures, are not suitable parameters to evaluate wall/roofs in non air-conditioned buildings. Abstract: Thermal mass combined with other passive strategies can play an important role in buildings energy efficiency, minimizing the need of space-conditioning mechanical systems. However, the use of lightweight materials with low thermal mass is becoming increasingly common. Phase Change Materials (PCMs) can add thermal energy storage benefits to lightweight constructions. There are many studies about the use of PCM in buildings, but there are still some difficulties for effective use and practical application of these materials. The study of applications used in real buildings could help us find solutions to these difficulties. This paper analyzed different PCM applications presented in highly efficient lightweight construction houses that have participated in the American Solar Decathlon, an international competition organized by U.S. Department of Energy. These houses have been tested and monitored in Washington DC, place with suitable climate conditions for short term thermal storage systems. The study started with a classification of the PCM applications and included an analysis of the systems, materials, switching temperatures, containments and design strategies used to improve the houses energy performance. Also, it included results of numerical simulations and experimentation that the participant team had done, complemented with information available in the literature about similar materials or applications. Abstract: The Kyoto protocol binded the developed countries to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions at least by 5% by 2008–2012 in order to tackle global warming and climate change. Some of the measures of the governments to achieve this goal are to promote new buildings construction and to retrofit existing buildings while satisfying low energy criteria. This means improving energy efficiency of buildings and energy systems, developing sustainable building concepts and promoting renewable energy sources. The design of a low energy building requires parametric studies via simulation tools in order to optimize the design of the building envelope and HVAC systems. These studies are often complex and time consuming due to a large number of parameters to consider. Hence, this paper aims to set up a methodology that simplifies parametrical studies during the design process of a low energy building. The methodology is based on the Design of Experiments (DOE) method which is a statistical method widely used in industry to perform parametric studies that reduces the required number of experiments.
