Abstract The implementation, in Building Performance Simulations (BPS) tools, of robust models capable of simulating the thermophysical behaviour of a Phase Change Material (PCM) represents a fundamental step for an appropriate thermal evaluation of buildings that adopt PCM-enhanced envelope components. Reliable and robust measuring procedures are essential, at a material and component level, to provide experimental data for the empirical validation of software tools. The traditional laboratory tests that are generally used for the validation of models present some limitations, because PCMs are usually subjected to conditions that may be very different from the real boundary conditions of the building components in which PCMs are applied. Furthermore, in many experimental full-scale mockups, the relatively small quantity of installed PCM and the combination of several thermal phenomena do not allow software tools to be tested in a reliable way. In this paper, an experimental procedure, based on a modified Heat Flow Meter Apparatus, has been developed to test the behaviour of PCM-enhanced components; the procedure, which is based on the measurement of the sinusoidal response, has been set up to provide data for the comparison and testing of numerical models and of BPS tools. Moreover, general indications and guidelines are provided to solve some issues related to building specimens that contain bulk PCM in order to obtain a more accurate measurement of their performance. The experimental results presented in this paper were obtained from two different bulk PCMs (organic and inorganic). It was found that it is important to evaluate different PCM typologies and different thermophysical boundary conditions, including partial and full phase transitions, to test simulation codes that implement PCM modelling functions. In fact, some phenomena, such as hysteresis and subcooling effects are more evident when partial phase transition takes place. The results related to the characterization of the thermal conductivity of a paraffin-based PCM have shown a significant increase (up to 42%) of the equivalent thermal conductivity from a solid to a liquid state, with an upward heat flux, thus highlighting that further investigations and improvements are needed to measure the equivalent thermal conductivity in the different PCM phases. With the gradual increase of building energy consumption in recent years, the application of phase change energy storage materials in buildings has become the focus of researches. Phase change material (PCM) embedded in the envelope can increase the building inertia to keep the temperature stable. It can also store energy and release energy when needed. In this paper, the system of PCM radiant floor combined with PCM wall attached with sunspace was established. The thermal characteristics and the energy consumption of the building are studied through analyzing the data from the experimental investigation including the temperature and the heat flux. Two different buildings were built between the PCM room and the conventional room with the same dimension and building. The main test conditions are divided into passive and active control stages by comparing the air temperatures, envelope temperatures, phase transition temperatures, heat fluxes and power consumptions between the two rooms. It is concluded that the average room temperature of the experimental room is 7.15 °C higher than that of the conventional room in the passive energy storage stage. While the average energy-saving rate of PCM room was 54.27% compared with the conventional room in the active control stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal energy storage (TES) systems with phase change materials (PCMs) as a known energy storage technology have a high potential for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. In fact, the use of PCMs with various approaches, either active or passive, in the building helps to maintain the temperature in the thermal comfort range for occupants through decreasing the temperature swings, and lower energy consumption by the load reduction/shifting. Due to the significance of this issue, many research works have been carried out on the application of PCMs in buildings. In this study, the experimental works in the fields of PCMs in buildings are taken into account. The papers are classified based on heating, cooling, and air-conditioning. Besides these, the applications of nano-PCMs in buildings are reviewed. According to what has been carried out up to now, the gaps are identified and analyzed for preparing useful suggestions for future works. Solar energy has been widely introduced in the building market to provide electricity, heating and domestic hot water for a sustainable development. However, the low-density and the mismatch between energy supply and demand make appropriate its combination with thermal energy storage (TES) systems. The integration of these technologies (solar thermal and TES) in the building design is a key aspect to reduce energy consumption. Latent heat storage using phase change materials (PCM) presents an advantage in comparison to conventional sensible heat storage systems due to the required volume. In this context, an innovative system that integrates PCM inside the structural horizontal building component is presented in this paper. The slab consisted of a prefabricated concrete element with 14 channels filled with macro-encapsulated PCM which is used as a storage unit and a heating supply. In order to melt the PCM the system is coupled to a solar air collector. The prototype is tested in an experimental facility located in Puigverd de Lleida (Spain) where its thermal performance is evaluated under real weather conditions. In buildings, HVAC systems consume a high amount of energy to provide thermal comfort for occupants. A methodology is presented in this paper to control thermostat operation of the buildings considering the effects of indoor and outdoor boundary conditions and phase change material (PCM) characteristics. EnergyPlus v8.1 building energy simulation software was used to analyze the energy performance of the PCM incorporated building models and to implement Fanger model to control HVAC thermostat operation according to BS EN 15251:2007 thermal comfort categories. Three types of building HVAC schedule, PCM with different melting points and layer thicknesses were studied for Madrid climate zone. Moreover, the impact of occupants clothing on the energy consumption was investigated. Furthermore, payback analysis was conducted to find out the economic benefits of PCM integration into the building envelopes. Application of PCM improved the cooling and heating energy performances except for the office model in winter (heating period). Additionally, higher energy savings and lower payback periods were observed when PCM with higher melting point was applied to the buildings. Eventually, energy savings in PCM incorporated models were found to improve further when occupants changed their clothing behavior in winter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to reduce energy consumption in buildings, a solution using phase change materials (PCMs) as thermal energy storage (TES) is presented. During summer nights, cold is stored and delivered during the day to reduce cooling load, whereas in winter, heat from solar air collector is stored for heating during morning and evening hours. Proposed is a stand-alone unit suitable for offices, which consists of plates filled with paraffin RT22HC. The objective of the paper is to examine the functioning of the suggested TES system on an annual basis and to explore the feasibility of using it for both, cooling and heating. First numerical model is set up, which assumes 2D geometry and evaluates thermal response, calculations are carried out in Fluent. Phase Change Materials (PCM) technology can be used for thermal storage and peak load shaving. This paper presents the optimization study of a PCM-Air heat exchanger as well as the development of load shifting solutions which take into account the thermal comfort of the occupants and the indoor air quality. The exchanger contains macroencapsumated PCM (paraffin) and is conceived in a way that facilitates its integration in a ventilation system. It is aimed to shift space heating electrical consumption from peak to off-peak period. The study is performed using an experimentally validated numerical model based on the heat balance approach and the apparent heat capacity method. Several parameters were investigated during the optimization processes, including heat exchanger dimensions, PCM quantity and properties, seeking the configuration with the optimal compromise between stored heat and the time needed for the charging/discharging process. The numerical model was coupled to a building simulation model with several control strategies investigating different scenarios over a one- month winter period. The scenarios vary with increasing complexity, first considering load shifting and thermal comfort, then adding the final price of electricity consumption and finally taking into account the indoor air quality. Energy demand for heating and cooling of buildings can be minimized through usage of thermal energy storage (TES) systems in building materials. TES in microencapsulated phase change materials provides a new solution to thermally regulated energy efficient buildings. This study summarizes the investigations and analysis of microencapsulated PCMs for building applications. Microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCMs) can be incorporated with many materials that are commonly used in building construction. This paper provides overview of various encapsulation techniques, test methods for MPCMs as well as applications of MPCMs in buildings. There are several micro-encapsulation methods by which the microcapsules of a wide range of sizes between 0.05 μm and 5000 μm can be produced. The MPCM incorporated with concrete, mortar, plaster and other materials have a significant potential to increase the thermal capacity of the mixture. Several authors reported testing of building materials with MPCM. Though the increase of thermal capacity with addition of MPCM is significant the decrease of mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, is relatively small. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phase change materials can be integrated in building walls to reduce heating energy consumption. However, proper design of the composite material requires a lot of complex calculations. In this paper, we present a methodology based on metamodeling in order to properly design phase change material composite solutions. A low-energy house example is chosen to develop our methodology, simulations being carried with TRNSYS. Box–Behnken design of experiments is used for data sampling in order to be able to produce a polynomial metamodel. First, the metamodel allows to have a profound understanding of the parameters influence: melting temperature, thickness, latent heat, density and thermal conductivity. Second, it is possible to extract from the polynomial form the optimal material properties. Third, the metamodel can be used to design or test different material solutions. Artificial intelligence techniques have been successfully applied to control dynamic systems looking for an optimal control. Among those techniques, reinforcement learning has been shown as particularly effective at reducing the dimensionality of some real problems and solving control problems by learning from experience. The use of thermal energy storage active systems in the building sector is identified as suitable option to reduce their energy demand for heating and cooling. However, these systems might be expensive and require appropriate control strategies in order to improve the performance of the building. In this paper a ventilated facade with PCM is controlled using a reinforcement learning algorithm. The ventilated facade uses mechanical ventilation during nighttime to solidify the PCM and releases this cold stored to the inner environment during the peak demand period. It is crucial to decide correctly the schedule of charge and discharge process of the PCM according to the weather and indoor conditions. An experimentally validated numerical model is used to test the performance of the control algorithm under different weather conditions. An experimentally validated numerical model is developed to study the effects of seven design and operational parameters on the heating performance of a solar chimney incorporated with phase change material (PCM) in this paper. It is found that when the latent heat increases from 70 to 170 kJ/kg, the melting time is increased by 103% and freezing time is prolonged by 60%. If heat flux is increased by 33%, the melting time is reduced by 36.4%. Increasing thermal conductivity of the insulation material from 0.02 to 0.06 W/m K, the melting time is prolonged by 47.2%. When absorptivity of the absorber is increased from 0.8 to 1.0, the melting time is decreased by 26.3%. When transmissivity of the glass cover is increased by 25%, the melting time is reduced by 26.7%. For the inlet air temperature, when it decreases from 25 to 15 °C, the freezing time is shortened by 39%. The melting time is only reduced by 8% when thermal conductivity of the absorber is increased by 25 times. Therefore, it can be concluded that the first six parameters have more impact on the system's performance while the thermal conductivity of absorber slightly impacts it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The cascaded PCMs charge–discharge processes and cycle entransy models are studied. • To run stably and efficiently, the charge–discharge cycle model is recommended. • The thermal performance of cascaded PCMs may be worse than that of single PCM. • The cascaded PCMs is suitable for scenes with large temperature differences. • In heating systems, the total NTU of cascaded PCMs is recommended between 4.5 and 6. Thermodynamic analysis can guide the application of the cascaded latent heat storage system (CLHSS) for space heating. However, in previous studies, the CLHSS charge–discharge process and the cycle are not distinguished, and the applicability of the corresponding models is not analyzed. In addition, the technical advantages of CLHSS in heat utilization are still unclear. This paper solved the above three problems to provide theoretical guidance of the CLHSS integrated into heating systems. First, the CLHSS charge–discharge cycle is the special charge–discharge processes in which the initial and final states of each PCM are consistent. The CLHSS charge–discharge processes and cycle models are established and optimized. Second, the optimization results of charge–discharge processes model cannot ensure the same initial and final states of each PCM, which leads to unstable operation and performance degradation of the CLHSS. Thus, the CLHSS charge–discharge cycle model is recommended. Third, when the total number of heat transfer unit (NTU) of CLHSS is less than that of single-stage latent heat storage system (SLHSS), the thermal performance of CLHSS may be worse than that of SLHSS. Besides, the use of CLHSS instead of SLHSS is suitable for scenes with large temperature differences between heating equipment and heating terminals. Finally, parameters effects on optimization results are analyzed. From the perspective of improving entransy efficiency, it is recommended that the total NTU of CLHSS during charge process and discharge process are between 4.5 and 6, and as close as possible. • Solar hot air heating systems are more suitable for application in plateau areas. • Embedding PCM optimizes solar heating systems using air-medium ETC. • Performance of several solar heating systems in plateau areas is compared. • Solar heating systems have low energy efficiency under poor building envelopes. • Parameter study results provide reference for solar hot air systems' design. Rich solar energy resources in plateau areas of Western China are suitable for local heating. However, common solar heating systems face the potential hazard and maintenance difficulties caused by climatic conditions. In this paper, the solar hot air heating system using the air medium evacuated tube collectors (ETCs) with embedding phase change materials (PCM) was discussed, which can be a good solution in plateau areas. The whole system model was built in TRNSYS software and validated with practical data. Then the comparative study was conducted to evaluate the energy-efficiency performance and feasibility of six kinds of solar heating systems, which also involved the fully electric heating, based on the three thermal types of buildings in Lhasa. It was concluded that the solar hot air heating system is the most suitable application in plateau areas, which shifts more solar energy to night time heating and requires less maintenance. Furthermore, the influence of parameters on the system performance was also investigated, such as collector area, buffer tank volume and electric power.
