HVAC systems in buildings are composed of many subcomponents which consume energy in huge amounts. In recent years, energy consumption becomes very important aspect due to the lack of energy resources and environmental reasons. In terms of energy consumption, the components of HVAC systems account for large portion of total energy used in buildings. Therefore optimization of energy consumption in HVAC applications is an essential requirement in terms of thermodynamic and economic point of views. Besides, the efforts for decreasing energy consumption turn into economic recovery. It also provides benefits for human health and cleaner environment. In this paper, as originality, thermodynamic and economic analyses of an existing social and cultural building which has a heating and cooling area of 8852 m 2 are presented by comparing of a conventional HVAC and a VRF system. A novel contribution is given to the open literature by comparing two systems with actual data measured from the existing system. The other originality is to apply and test a VRF system to a complex-structured building. This study is a rare one which contains insulation, heating and cooling accounts of a building together. In this paper, VRF system is modelled to the existing building for the comparison of the conventional HVAC system. Both systems have been compared in terms of heating and cooling capacity, initial, operation and maintenance costs. It is found that the VRF system is more economic and efficient such that the VRF system is found to have 44% cost profit when compared with the conventional HVAC system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a solar based Rankine cycle and geothermal based system for multigeneration is designed and developed. It consists of a Rankine cycle with reheating for power generation, an absorption chiller cycle for cooling, a drying process to dry wet products, useful heat from the condenser of the Rankine cycle, and other useful heat out from heat exchangers. The overall energy and exergy efficiencies of the single generation and multigeneration systems are studied, and it is observed that the energy efficiency of the multigeneration system is higher than the single generation system. The energy efficiency of the single and multigeneration systems are 7% and 37%, respectively. Similarly, the overall exergy efficiencies for the single generation and multigeneration systems are also studied and presented in this paper. In addition to this, parametric studies are performed to observe the effects of different substantial parameters, namely inlet pressure and temperature of the turbine, and reference environment temperature in order to investigate the variations in the system performance in terms of the energy and exergy efficiencies. Abstract: District heating is used in many urban areas in Sweden. Almost always, the district heating utility is owned by the municipality and the municipality naturally encourages proprietors to connect their buildings to the grid, even if they cannot really force them to do so. The building owners are free to choose the best system, i.e. the cheapest one, for their need. Unfortunately, it is not always so easy to find the best solution. Mixed integer linear programming (MLIP) models might here come to help. By such computer programs it is possible to find the absolutely cheapest system of available alternatives, or even combinations among them. This paper shows how to design such a model and further how to closely depict the district heating, and electricity tariff. This is of course very important because the only interface between the proprietor of the building and the utility is found in this bureaucratic instrument. If the tariff is too high the building owners will choose other heating systems than district heating, or even worse, combining district heating with alternative base load sources. In Sweden, this has been of interest because ground-water coupled heat pumps can be profitable, operated by use of the relatively low electricity prices. In this paper we show that dual-fuel, and sometimes even triple-fuel systems, are of interest when the proprietor aims at minimising the cost for space and domestic hot-water heating. The paper briefly describes energy-efficiency standards that have been issued for residential buildings in Northern and Central China as well as energy-efficiency inspection standards and specifications for renovation of existing residential heating systems in Northern China, and development of energy-efficiency standards for Southern China. The paper also describes barriers to improving the energy efficiency of residential buildings in China and strategies for overcoming these barriers, including reform of the method of payment for heating in Northern China. Finally, future prospects for further developing energy-efficiency standards for residential buildings in China are addressed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper we undertake a comprehensive study to meet the building heating/cooling and power demand through a sustainable operation. We integrated polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system and triple effect absorption refrigeration system (TEARS) for space cooling/heating and water heating applications in buildings. The analysis is carried out to observe the effects of different operating conditions on the efficiency of the fuel cell, output of the fuel cell and TEARS, and the utilization factor of the system. It is found that the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water increases from 36% to 48.8%, 49% to 86%, and 14K to 23K, respectively when the temperature of the cell is increased for different cooling loads and membrane thicknesses. In addition, the increase in membrane thickness affected the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water in a negative way and they were found to be decreasing from 47.3% to 42%, 85% to 49%, and 23K to 12K, respectively for different cooling loads. The water supplied to the house is obtained from a geothermal water source which makes the system more sustainable. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Exergy represents the ability of an energy carrier to perform work and can be seen as a core indicator for measuring its quality. In this article we postulate that energy prices reflect the exergy content of the underlying energy carrier and that capital expenditures can substitute for exergy to some degree. We draw our line of argumentation from cost and technology data for heating systems of four European countries: Austria, Finland, The Netherlands, and Sweden. Firstly, this paper shows that the overall consumer costs for different heating options, widely installed in those countries, are in the same range. In this analysis we derived an overall standard deviation of about 8%. Secondly, additional analysis demonstrates that the share of capital costs on total heating cost increases with lower exergy input. Based on the data used in this analysis, we conclude that for the case of modern cost effective heating systems the substitution rate between exergy and capital is in the vicinity of 2/3. This means that by reducing the average specific exergy input of the applied energy carriers by one unit, the share of capital costs on the total costs increases by 2/3 of a unit. Abstract: Energy use in the built environment represents a large part of total energy use in Sweden and is one important sector where energy conservation needs to be significantly improved in order to meet the national implementation of the European goals. One key question that needs to be investigated in relation to these goals is the performance and implementation of passive or low-energy houses. This paper presents results and an evaluation of a newly built house in an area with passive houses in Linköping, Sweden. Nine passive houses were built with the aim to be energy efficient, with an annual space heating demand of 21kWh/m2, and at the same time to have the same visual appearance as any other building in the surrounding area. This study evaluates the energy performance of a residential area with low-energy buildings based on Building Energy Simulation (BES) (IDA ICE 4), and measurements from the real object. Both annual and hourly validation is performed using room by room modeling and internal heat gains. A novel approach to internal heat gain modeling is presented using time-use data (TUD). Abstract: Ground coupled heat pump systems can offer high energy efficiency for heating and cooling of buildings. The coupling of the ground loop with system and building represents a complex system and system performances can vary over long periods, in the range of 10–15 years due to the charge or discharge of the ground loop. In order to correctly concept, size and optimise these systems, numerical simulation is a perfect tool. The assessment of the global performance of such systems through simulation relies on several parameters, from the physical model validity to the operating conditions and control of the system. Typically, a GCHP system is simulated with a 1-h step. Transient phenomena inside the borehole are often neglected since ground models are mainly developed to characterise long term phenomena. However, detailed system simulations considering a realistic control of the system require much smaller time steps. In these cases, the validity of simulation models has to be verified. This paper proposes a hybrid approach combining experiments and simulation to highlight and quantify the impact of borehole short-time response on the system efficiency and system operation. First, a comparison between steady state and transient models as well as measurement is carried out. It reveals significant influence of dynamic effects inside the borehole. Abstract: It is well known that it is necessary to insulate the buildings to decrease the thermal demand and to decrease the use of heating and cooling. Due to the high cost of fossil fuels and to the necessity to reduce CO2 emissions, and also due to the new building regulations more attention is paid to the insulation of buildings. Different insulation materials are available in the market. Usually, they are compared by their thermal conductivity and with theoretical calculations, but there are no experimental comparisons available, where the behavior of such insulation materials in a building is compared over time. This is why the authors started a comparison of three typical insulation materials, polyurethane, polystyrene, and mineral wool. For this purpose, four house-like cubicles were constructed (with a size of 2.4m×2.4m×2.4m) and their thermal performance throughout the time was measured. The cubicles were built under a conventional Mediterranean construction system, differing only in the insulation material used. During 2008 and the first months of 2009 the performance of these cubicles was evaluated, and the results are presented in this paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper presents an extended method for exergy analysis of buildings and Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, according to an energy demand build-up model from the building side to the energy supply side. The HVAC systems comprise a thermal energy emission and control system, a thermal distribution system, an electricity distribution system and an energy conversion system. Energy and exergy that are required by a building and a HVAC system are posed into the external part and classified by different forms of energy carriers. The external part is out of the boundary of the study. The method is illustrated with an office building equipped with low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling systems situated in the Netherlands. Thermal exergy and thermal energy demands of the building and thermal energy and thermal exergy losses occurring in the HVAC systems are discussed. The building and the HVAC systems to be considered meet standard Dutch energy performance regulations. Nevertheless their overall exergy efficiencies are low in both cases (17.15% and 6.81% subsequently). The exergy analysis also pinpoints that the thermal energy emission and control system and the energy conversion system are the main causes of the exergy inefficiencies in the heating and cooling cases, respectively. Abstract: The objective of this paper is to develop a model for simulating the thermal and hydraulic behavior of space heating systems with radiators controlled by thermostat valves (TRVs) in multi-family buildings. This is done by treating the building and the heating system as a complete entity. Sub-models for rooms, radiators, TRVs, and the hydraulic network are derived. Then the suggested sub-models are combined to form an integrated model by considering interactions between them. The proposed model takes into account the heat transfer between neighboring rooms, the transport delay in the radiator, the self-adjusting function of the TRV, and the consumer''s regulation behavior, as well as the hydraulic interactions between consumers. To test the model, two space heating systems in Beijing and Tianjin were investigated, and the model was validated under three operation modes. There was good agreement between the measured and simulated values for room temperature, return water temperature, and flow rate. A modeling analysis case was given based on an existing building and heating system. It was found that when the set value of the TRVs were kept on 2–3, about 12.4% reduction of heat consumption could be gained, compared with the situation in which the TRVs were kept fully open. The water flow rate was an important index that truly reflected the heat load change. It was also noted that if the flow rate or supply water temperature changed much during the transport delay time in the radiator, ignoring the transport delay would introduce an obvious deviation of the simulation results. Additionally, when an apartment stopped using the heating system during a heating season, the heat consumption of its neighboring apartments would be increased about 6–14%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper reports on an analytical investigation into the energy saving potential associated with modified comfort limits in transitional spaces in buildings. Such spaces may not require the same high level and close environmental control of more fully occupied spaces and thus a wider variation in conditions and interpretation of thermal comfort may be permitted. Estimations are made of energy saving potential based upon typical floor area proportions utilised for transition spaces of various types in office/commercial buildings. The data are combined with suggested norms for comfort expectation that have wider temperature limits than for normally occupied office zones. The method has been applied to a series of building types situated in the climate of the East Pennines area of the UK using a thermal analysis tool. The results show that useful energy savings (particularly for heating) are possible by allowing for a modest (and realistic) relaxation of prescribed comfort standards in transition spaces. Abstract: An energy cost allocation system records the energy consumption of a building and divides the overall energy costs between the flats. Because the indoor temperatures of rooms are usually not equal, static heat flows between flats cannot be avoided. Hence, in order to ensure fair energy costs per flat the system should be able to determine the static heat flows, preferably without utilising in situ measurements. This paper presents a new method for estimating static heat flows between neighbouring rooms. The approach is theoretical, focusing only on heat transfer issues. Energy cost allocation is not considered. The approach is based on the parametric model describing thermal behaviour of an occupied space. The model is created for each room of a building. Parameter values are identified using real-time measurements collected by a building automation system from each room and its environment. The tuning of parameters takes a few days using a 15-min sampling time. A prerequisite for successful system identification is the overall control of the room temperatures. All test runs are performed in a simulated office hotel using the TRNSYS simulation program. The results are encouraging, but further research is needed, especially in a real building environment. The evaluation of renewable energy used to increase the environmental friendliness of passive houses (PH) is the topic of this paper. A time-dependent model of passive house thermal behavior is developed. The heat-transfer through the high thermal inertia elements is analyzed by using a 1D time-dependent conduction heat-transfer equation that is solved numerically by using a standard Netlib solver (PDECHEB). Appropriate models for the conduction through the low thermal inertia elements are used, as well as a simple approach of the solar radiation transmission through the windows. The model takes into account in a detailed fashion the internal heat sources. Also, the operation of ventilation/heating system is described and common practice control strategies are implemented. Three renewable energy sources are considered. First, there is the passive solar heating due to the large window on the fac¸ade oriented south. Second, the active solar collectors system provides thermal energy for space heating or hot domestic water preparation. Third, a ground heat exchanger (GHE) increases the fresh air temperature during the cold season. The model was applied to the Pirmasens Passive House (Rhineland Palatinate, Germany). The passive solar heating system provides most part of the heating energy during November, December, February and March while in January the ground heat exchanger is the most important renewable energy source. January and February require use of additional conventional energy sources. A clever use of the active solar heating system could avoid consuming classical fuels during November, December and March. The ground heat exchanger is a reliable renewable source of energy. It provides heat during all the day and its (rather small) heat flux is increasing when the weather becomes colder. The air temperature at heater exit is normally lower than 46 °C. This is a good reason for the use of renewable energy to replace the classical fuel or the wood to be burn in the heater. A passive house is a cost-efficient building that can manage throughout the heating period, due to its specific construction design, with more than 10 times less heat energy than the same building designed to standards presently applicable across Europe. Its extended thermal insulation and enhanced air-tightness removes the need for temperatures higher than 50 °C. This makes renewable energy sources particularly suitable for heating, cooling and domestic hot water production. Modeling of renewable energy usage for space heating requires as a preliminary stage the detailed description of the building structure, of the HVAC equipment and of the internal heat sources. This paper shows the main data used to model the thermal behavior of a passive house. Details about Pirmasens Passive House (Rhineland Palatinate, Germany) are given, as for example, the internal heat sources, including electric appliances, heat and humidity released by human bodies, thermal internal facilities as hot and cold water pipes. All these are quantified by using statistically derived data. A detailed time schedule for a standard German family with two adults and two children was prepared. The paper analyses effects of changes in temperatures on heating and cooling demands in Europe until 2050. Specifically, the study addresses changes in trends (10-year mean) and extremes (10-year min/max). The analysis is based on two GHG emission climate scenarios (RCP2.6 and RCP4.5) and eight high-resolution regional climate models and results are provided as relative and absolute changes on grid and country scales. Population density is used as proxy for spatial distribution of demands. Projected future temperatures are proportional with RCP scenario and distance into the future and the highest relative changes occur towards north-eastern Europe and for high-altitude areas. The temperature changes lead to general decreased heating demands and corresponding increased cooling demands. In general, higher spreads are seen between demand change ratios for individual models when addressing extremes as opposed to trends: The general 2010–2050 change ratios for heating between countries are 0.85–95 for model means and average 0.69 for the extreme analysis. For cooling, corresponding ratios are 1.25–1.5 for model means and average 2.76 for model maxima. For absolute demand changes, some countries are projected to experience significant changes e.g. exceeding a doubling in cooling demands.
