Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) are becoming more and more renowned as biocompatible nanomaterials with diverse biological functions. In the present study, the aqueous extract of tea residue (tea filtered waste powder) was used to synthesize the TiO 2 NPs and treated for effluent bioremediations. Maximum absorption in the UV–Vis spectrum of the TiO 2 NPs was seen at 358 nm, and the XRD pattern reveals peaks at 2 h values of 25.78, 38.24, 47.98, 54.76, 55.32, 62.64, 69.05, 70.15, 75.24, and 83.59 that may be indexed to the (101), (004), (200), (105), (211), (204), (116), (220), (215) and (303). The FT-IR spectra of TiO 2 NPs showed a peak at 3420, 2925, 1621, 1382, 1098, and 687 cm-1. The spherical form and size were disclosed by FE-SEM analyses, and the EDAX pattern verified the purity of the TiO 2 NPs. The average particles size of the TiO 2 NPs was 32 nm. The photodegradation of paper mill waste water is significantly deteriorated up to 99.08% for 600 min, but textile waste water is degraded up to 98.06% for the same duration. Furthermore, we reported that TiO 2 NPs may rapidly breakdown industrially hazardous effluents when exposed to sunshine. The Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) have effectively kept lower antibiotic-resistant bacterial (ARB) pathogen rates than many other countries. However, in recent years, these five countries have encountered a rise in ARB cases and challenges in treating infections due to the growing prevalence of ARB pathogens. Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) is a valuable supplement to clinical methods for ARB surveillance, but there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of WBS application for ARB in the Nordic countries. This review aims to compile the latest state-of-the-art developments in WBS for ARB monitoring in the Nordic countries and compare them with clinical surveillance practices. After reviewing 1480 papers from the primary search, 54 were found relevant, and 15 additional WBS-related papers were included. Among 69 studies analyzed, 42 dedicated clinical epidemiology, while 27 focused on wastewater monitoring. The PRISMA review of the literature revealed that Nordic countries focus on four major WBS objectives of ARB: assessing ARB in the human population, identifying ARB evading wastewater treatment, quantifying removal rates, and evaluating potential ARB evolution during the treatment process. In both clinical and wastewater contexts, the most studied targets were pathogens producing carbapenemase and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), primarily Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. However, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have received more attention in clinical epidemiology than in wastewater studies, probably due to their lower detection rates in wastewater. Clinical surveillance has mostly used culturing, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and genotyping, but WBS employed PCR-based and metagenomics alongside culture-based techniques. Imported cases resulting from international travel and hospitalization abroad appear to have frequently contributed to the rise in ARB pathogen cases in these countries. The many similarities between the Nordic countries (e.g., knowledge exchange practices, antibiotic usage patterns, and the current ARB landscape) could facilitate collaborative efforts in developing and implementing WBS for ARB in population-level screening. Water treatment is one of the most important issues for all walks of life around the world. The unique advantages of the solid-state power electronic pulses in water treatment make it attractive and promising in practical applications. The output voltage, rising time, repetition rate, and peak power of output pulses have a significant impact on the effectiveness of water treatment. Especially in pulse electric field treatment and pulse discharge treatment, the pulse with fast rising time achieves the advantage of generating plasma without corona, which can avoid water heating effect and greatly improve the efficiency of the pulse generator. High repetition rate can significantly reduce the peak power requirement of the pulse in water treatment application, making the equipment smaller and improving the power density. Therefore, the study developed a high-voltage high frequency sub-nanosecond pulse power generator (PPG) system for wastewater treatment. It adopts SiC DSRD (Drift Step Recovery Diode) solid-state switches and realize modular design, which can achieve high performance and can be flexible expanded according to the requirements of water treatment capacity. Finally, an expandable high-voltage PPG for water treatment is built. The output parameters of the PPG include output pulse voltage range from 1 to 5.28 kV, rise time <600 ps (20%–90%), repetition up to 1 MHz. The experiment results of PPG application for pulse discharge water treatment is presented. The results indicate that the proposed generator achieves high-efficiency degradation of 4-Chlorophenol (4-CP), which is one of the most common chlorophenol compounds in wastewater. From experiment, the homemade system can degrade 450 mL waste water containing 500 mg/L 4-CP in 35 min, with a degradation rate of 98%. Thereby, the requirement for electric field intensity decreased. The global public health concern of nitrate (NO 3 −) contamination in groundwater is particularly pronounced in irrigated agricultural regions. This paper aims to analyze the spatial distribution of groundwater NO 3 −, assess potential health risks for local residents, and quantitatively identify nitrate sources during different seasons and land use types in the Jinghuiqu Irrigation District, a region in northwestern China with a longstanding agricultural history. The investigation utilizes hydrochemical parameters, dual isotopic data, and the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR). The findings underscore significant seasonal variations in the average concentrations of NO 3 −, with values of 87.72 mg/L and 101.87 mg/L during the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Furthermore, distinct fluctuations in nitrate concentration were observed across different land use types, whereby vegetable lands manifested the maximum concentration. Prolonged exposure to elevated nitrate concentrations may pose potential health risks to residents, especially in the dry season when the non-carcinogenic groundwater nitrate risk surges past its wet season counterpart. The MixSIAR analysis revealed that chemical fertilizers accounted for the majority of nitrate pollution in vegetable lands, both during the dry season (49.6%) and wet season (41.2%). In contrast, manure and sewage contributed significantly to NO 3 −concentrations in residential land during the wet (74.9%) and dry seasons (67.6%). For croplands, soil nitrogen emerged as a dominant source during the wet season (42.2%), while chemical fertilizers prevailed in the dry season (38.7%). In addition to source variations, the nitrate concentration of groundwater is further affected by hydrogeological conditions, with more permeable aquifers tending to display higher nitrate concentrations. Thus, targeted measures were proposed to modify or impede the nitrogen migration pathway, taking into consideration hydrogeological conditions and incorporating domestic sewage, organic fertilizer, and agricultural management practices. Domestic wastewater is one of the major carbon sources that cannot be ignored by human society. Against the background of carbon peaking & carbon neutrality (Double Carbon) goals, the continuous urbanization has put heavy pressure on urban drainage systems. Nevertheless, the complex subjective and objective conditions of drainage systems restrict the field monitoring, measurement, and analysis of drainage systems, which has become a great obstacle to the study of carbon emissions from drainage system. In this paper, 3389 sensor terminals of Internet of Things (IoT) are used to build a field monitoring IoT for urban domestic wastewater methane (CH 4) carbon emission, with 21 main districts of Chongqing Municipality in China as the study area. Incorporating Fick's law of diffusion, this field monitoring IoT derives a measurement model for methane carbon emissions based on measured concentrations, and solves the problems of long-term and stable monitoring and measurement of methane gas in complex underground environment. With GIS spatio-temporal analysis used to analyze the spatial and temporal evolution patterns of carbon emissions from septic tanks in drainage systems, it successfully reveals the spatial and temporal distribution of methane carbon emissions from drainage systems in different seasons, as well as the relationship between methane carbon emissions from drainage systems and the latitude of direct sunlight. Applying the DTW method, it quantifies the stability of methane monitoring in drainage systems and evaluates the effects of Sampling Frequency (SF) and Number of Devices Terminal (NDT) on the stability of methane monitoring. Membrane distillation crystallization (MDC) is an emerging hybrid thermal membrane technology that synergizes membrane distillation (MD) and crystallization, which can achieve both freshwater and minerals recovery from high concentrated solutions. Due to the outstanding hydrophobic nature of the membranes, MDC has been widely used in numerous fields such as seawater desalination, valuable minerals recovery, industrial wastewater treatment and pharmaceutical applications, where the separation of dissolved solids is required. Despite the fact that MDC has shown great promise in producing both high-purity crystals and freshwater, most studies on MDC remain limited to laboratory scale, and industrializing MDC processes is currently impractical. This paper summarizes the current state of MDC research, focusing on the mechanisms of MDC, the controls for membrane distillation (MD), and the controls for crystallization. Additionally, this paper categorizes the obstacles hindering the industrialization of MDC into various aspects, including energy consumption, membrane wetting, flux reduction, crystal yield and purity, and crystallizer design. The existence of various pollutants in water environment contributes to global pollution and poses significant threats to humans, wildlife, and other living beings. The emergence of an effective, realistic, cost-effective, and environmentally acceptable technique to treat wastewater generated from different sectors is critical for reducing pollutant accumulation in the environment. The electrochemical advanced oxidation method is a productive technology for treating hazardous effluents because of its potential benefits such as lack of secondary pollutant and high oxidation efficiency. Recent researches on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the period of 2018–2022 are highlighted in this paper. This review emphasizes on recent advances in electro-oxidation (EO), ozone oxidation, sonolysis, radiation, electro-Fenton (EF), photolysis and photocatalysis targeted at treating pharmaceuticals, dyes and pesticides polluted effluents. In the first half of the review, the concept of the AOPs are discussed briefly. Later, the influence of increasing current density, pH, electrode, electrolyte and initial concentration of effluents on degradation are discussed. Lastly, previously reported designs of electrochemical reactors, as well as data on intermediates generated and energy consumption during the electro oxidation and Fenton processes are discussed. According to the literature study, the electro-oxidation technique is more appropriate for organic compounds, whilst the electro-Fenton technique appear to be more appropriate for more complex molecules. South Asia's coastlines are the most densely inhabited and economically active ecosystems have already begun to shift due to climate change. Over the past century, climate change has contributed to a gradual and considerable rise in sea level, which has eroded shorelines and increased storm-related coastal flooding. The differences in estuary water quality over time, both seasonally and annually, have been efficiently controlled by changes in stream flow. Assessment requires digitized analytical platforms to lower the risk of catastrophes associated with climate change in coastal towns. To predict future changes in an area's vulnerability and waste planning decisions, a prospective investigation requires qualitative and quantitative scenarios. The paper concentrates on the development of a forecasting platform to evaluate the climate change and waste water impacts on the south coastal region of India. Due to the enhancement of Digitization, a multi-model ensemble combined with manifold learning is implemented on the multi-case models influencing the uncertainty probability rate of 23% and can be ignored with desired precaution on the coastal environmental. Because Manifold Learning Analysis results cannot be utilized directly in wastewater management studies because of their inherent biases, a statistical bias correction and meta-feature estimation have been implemented. Within the climate-hydrology modeling chain, the results demonstrate a wide range of expected changes in water resources in some places. The environmental effects of the urban agglomeration planning policy (UAPP) are an exploration by rapidly developing China and a concern for countries seeking development and urban reform around the world. This paper takes the three regional urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) as the research object and collects the panel data of 106 prefecture-level cities from 2006 to 2019 to study the reduction effects of UAPP on the industrial wastewater discharge (IWD). The empirical results from Difference-in-Differences models indicate that UAPP can significantly inhibit IWD. UAPP reduces IWD by promoting green innovation, and the development of service industries can strengthen this effect. UAPP shows a stronger IWD reduction effect in the northeast YRB than that in the southwest region. Compared to urban agglomerations with a single provincial jurisdiction, UAPP exerts stronger IWD reduction effects on urban agglomerations with multiple jurisdictions. Moreover, there exist spatial spillover effects of UAPP on IWD. Efficient and clean extraction lithium (Li) from spent LiFePO 4 batteries (LIBs) still remains a challenge. In this paper, a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on ethylene glycol (EG) and choline chloride (CC), combined with ozone (O 3) from air source, realized highly selective leaching Li from LiFePO 4 in situ for the first time. The influence of experimental parameters on Li and Fe leaching efficiencies (η Li , η Fe) were studied by orthogonal and single-factor tests, and η Li ≥ 92.2% while η Fe ≤ 1.6% were obtained under the optimal conditions (6 h, 20 g/L, 8EG:1CC, 40 °C). The impurity Fe in the filtrate was completely precipitated as amorphous FePO 4 ·3H 2 O after heating (150 °C, 0.5 h), achieving a pure Li-solution. The leaching mechanism elucidated that the synergistic effect (acidification, replacement and oxidation reaction) between the DES and O 3 determined the phase transition of Li and Fe, promoting the efficient selective extraction of Li and in-situ separation of Fe (FePO 4). The average η Li and η Fe were separately 85.4% and 2.0% after ten cycles of the 8EG:1CC, indicative of its' excellent reusability. Meanwhile, LiCl was recovered from the filtrate. This process avoided the use of strong acid/alkali and discharge of waste water, providing fresh perspectives on the green recovery of spent LiFePO 4 batteries. Gestagens are common pollutants accumulated in the aquatic ecosystem. Gestagens are comprised of natural gestagens (i.e. progesterone) and synthetic gestagens (i.e. progestins). The major contributors of gestagens in the environment are paper plant mill effluent, wastewater treatment plants, discharge from pharmaceutical manufacturing, and livestock farming. Gestagens present in the aquatic environment interact with progesterone receptors and other steroid hormone receptors, negatively influencing fish reproduction, development, and behavior. In fish, the gonadotropin induces 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) production, an important steroid hormone involved in gametogenesis. DHP interacts with the membrane progestin receptor (mPR), which regulates sperm motility and oocyte maturation. Gestagens also interfere with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which results in altered hormone levels in fish. Moreover, recent studies showed that even at low concentrations exposure to gestagens can have detrimental effects on fish reproduction, including reduced egg production, masculinization, feminization in males, and altered sex ratio, raising concerns about their impact on the fish population. This review highlights the hormonal regulation of sperm motility, oocyte maturation, the concentration of environmental gestagens in the aquatic environment, and their detrimental effects on fish reproduction. However, the long-term and combined impacts of multiple gestagens, including their interactions with other pollutants on fish populations and ecosystems are not well understood. The lack of standardized regulations and monitoring protocols for gestagens pollution in wastewater effluent hampers effective control and management. In this research, the potential application of Pistacia soft shell (PSS) was investigated as a novel bio-based flocculant for pulp and paper wastewater (PPWW) treatment. In line with this, after characterization of the PSS, the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity and heavy metals (Cu2+ and Pb2+) from PPWW were investigated with different dosage of PSS. The results were compared with alum as a reference flocculant. In addition, the effect of pH adjustment on the flocculation-adsorption performance of PSS was studied under acidic and alkaline condition. Zeta potential, BET, FTIR and SEM as well as kinetics and isotherm analyses were conducted for mechanistic understanding. According to the results, PSS treatment could remove COD, turbidity, Cu2+ and Pb2+ up to 67%, 87%, 70% and 74%, respectively which were better than alum: 56%, 85%, 31% and 35%. It was observed that, pH adjustment significantly improved the performance of PSS treatment. Maximum removal efficiencies of 92%, 95%, 97% and 98% were achieved for COD, turbidity, Cu2+ and Pb2+, respectively, under optimal condition of using 2 g/L PSS at pH 9. The mechanism analysis revealed that the high removal efficiency of PSS is related to the dual flocculation-adsorption of bridging and sweeping mechanisms. The results of this study suggested PSS as a promising, sustainable and eco-friendly bio-based flocculant and adsorbent for industrial wastewater treatment. The scarcity of carbon sources presents a significant challenge for the bio-treatment of rural domestic wastewater (RDW). This paper presented an innovative approach to address this issue by investigating the supplementary carbon source through in-situ degradation of particulate organic matter (POM) facilitated by ferric sulfate modified sludge-based biochar (SBC). To prepare SBC, five different contents of ferric sulfate (0%, 10%, 20%, 25%, and 33.3%) were added to sewage sludge. The results revealed that the pore and surface of SBC were enhanced, providing active sites and functional groups to accelerate the biodegradation of protein and polysaccharide. During the 8-day hydrolysis period, the concentration of soluble chemical oxidation demand (SCOD) increased and peaked (1087–1156 mg L−1) on the fourth day. The C/N ratio increased from 3.50 (control) to 5.39 (25% ferric sulfate). POM was degraded the five dominant phyla, which were Actinobacteriota , Firmicutes , Synergistota , Proteobacteria , and Bacteroidetes. Although the relative abundance of dominant phyla changed, the metabolic pathway remained unchanged. The leachate of SBC (<20% ferric sulfate) was beneficial for microbes, but an excessive amount of ferric sulfate (33.3% ferric sulfate) could have inhibition effects on bacteria. In conclusion, ferric sulfate modified SBC holds the potential for the carbon degradation of POM in RDW, and further improvements should be made in future studies. The paper demonstrates the capability of using cockle shells as an adsorbent for phosphorus removal from simulated petrochemical wastewater, focusing on the actual condition of the petrochemical facultative pond. In this study, the physicochemical properties of shell powder were determined, such as the functional groups, surface morphology, crystalline structure, and surface area using FTIR, SEM, EDX, XRD, and BET. It was observed that the optimum conditions for effective phosphorus removal are under the presence of rotational speed (125 rpm), higher dosage (7 g/L), and larger surface area (smaller particle size) of the shell powder. Fine powder achieved up to 52.27% of phosphorus removal after 40 min compared to coarse powder which could only give 16.67% removal. Additionally, calcined shell powder demonstrated a higher phosphorus removal rate, i.e., up to 62.37%, compared to raw shell powders. The adsorption isotherm was studied using Langmuir and Freundlich models, but the isothermal data fit better for the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.9836). Overall, this study has successfully generated a greener and low-cost adsorbent. This review discusses the techniques available for detecting and inactivating of pathogens in municipal wastewater, landfill leachate, and solid waste. In view of the current COVID-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 is being given special attention, with a thorough examination of all possible transmission pathways linked to the selected waste matrices. Despite the lack of works focused on landfill leachate, a systematic review method, based on cluster analysis, allows to analyze the available papers devoted to sewage sludge and wastewater, allowing to focalize the work on technologies able to detect and treat pathogens. In this work, great attention is also devoted to infectivity and transmission mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2. Moreover, the literature analysis shows that sewage sludge and landfill leachate seem to have a remote chance to act as a virus transmission route (pollution-to-human transmission) due to improper collection and treatment of municipal wastewater and solid waste. However due to the incertitude about virus infectivity, these possibilities cannot be excluded and need further investigation. As a conclusion, this paper shows that additional research is required not only on the coronavirus-specific disinfection, but also the regular surveillance or monitoring of viral loads in sewage sludge, wastewater, and landfill leachate. The disinfection strategies need to be optimized in terms of dosage and potential adverse impacts like antimicrobial resistance, among many other factors. Inverse vulcanized polysulfides have been used as low-cost and effective adsorbents to remediate heavy metals in wastewater. Inverse vulcanization introduces sustainable polysulfide synthesis by solving the rapid desulfurization problem of unstable polysulfides, and provides superior performance compared to conventional commercial adsorbents. The review discussed the brief applications of the inverse vulcanized polysulfides to remove heavy metal wastewater and emphasized the modified synthesis processes for enhanced uptake ratios. The characteristics of polysulfide adsorbents, which play a vital role during the removal process are highlighted with a proper discussion of the interaction between metal ions and polysulfides. The review paper concludes with remarks on the future outlook of these low-cost adsorbents with high selectivity to heavy metals. These polysulfide adsorbents can be prepared using a wide variety of crosslinker monomers including organic hydrocarbons, cooking oils, and agro-based waste materials. They have shown good surface area and excellent metal-binding capabilities compared to the commercially available adsorbents. Proper postmodification processes have enabled the benefits of repetitive uses of the polysulfide adsorbents. The improved surface area obtained by appropriate choice of crosslinkers, modified synthesis techniques, and regeneration through post-modification has made inverse vulcanized polysulfides capable of removing. In this paper, the synthetic methyl orange (MO) dyeing wastewater treated by a reverse electrodialysis reactor (REDR) with 40 member pairs was investigated first. The boron-doped diamond (BDD) and carbon felt were adopted as an anode and a cathode in the REDR. The influences of operation parameters on the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency were detected and explored. Then, a mathematical model of organic mineralizing was developed for the REDR to predict the variation of COD removal efficiency with treating time under the different operation conditions. Finally, the energy consumption of the wastewater treated by the REDR was analyzed. The results showed that raising the working fluid flowing velocity and electrode rinse solution flowrate improved the COD removal efficiency and instantaneous current efficiency (ICE), and reduced the total energy consumption (TEC) of the REDR. Raising the initial MO concentration could significantly reduce the TEC despite the COD removal efficiency being near. The amount of industrial pollution entering the environment and its impact on living organisms is an ongoing concern. At the same time, due to an increasing awareness, new methods of wastewater treatment are being explored that are not only effective but also environmentally acceptable. Meeting environmental standards for permitted concentrations is a necessity, but investigating the effects of wastewater on living organisms is also an important issue. In this paper, the influence of metal ions (Fe(III), Cr(III), Ni(II), Cu(II)) in industrial wastewater from electropolishing of stainless steel on Daphnia magna has been investigated. Daphnids have been exposed to wastewater both before and after treatment (Ca(OH) 2 precipitation, sorption with peat). Immobilisation in a 48-h acute toxicity test and EC 50 has been determined. In the case of studied industrial wastewater, the organic content (expressed as total organic carbon) of the effluent has a positive impact in terms of the survival of D. magna and increases the range of heavy metal concentrations tolerated by them. The application of a two-stage process with Ca(OH) 2 neutralisation followed by sorption with peat allows for the removal of almost 100% of metal ions from the wastewater. The reduction obtained ensured a limited impact on D. magna and a decrease in immobilisation to less than 10%. Oily wastewater produced in the process of oil extraction has a potential threat to the environment. In this paper, diethylenetriamine was used to modify rice straw powder (RSP) by a solvent-free strategy, and the obtained product (AM-RSP) was utilized to dispose oily wastewater. AM-RSP was characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and BET. The factors affecting the demulsification performance (DP) such as dosage, salinity and pH value were detailly investigated. The results indicated that light transmittance (E T) and oil removal rate (E R) of separated water could reach 93.5% and 96.5%, respectively, within 40 min with 150 mg/L of AM-RSP at room temperature. Also, AM-RSP had a good salt resistance. In addition, three-phase contact angle (TCA), formation of interfacial film, interfacial activity, dynamic interfacial tension (IFT), coalescence time of droplets and zeta potential were adopted to probe the demulsification mechanism. • AM-RSP was prepared by a simple solvent-free method. • Rice straw as bio-waste was used as raw materials. • AM-RSP has a high demulsification efficiency in oily wastewater. • AM-RSP is stable and environmentally friendly. The evaporation concentrate of gas field wastewater (EC-GFW) is a new type of refractory actual wastewater produced by the three-effect evaporation of gas field wastewater, exhibiting extremely high salinity and complex organic components. This study proposed a set of processes consisting of AOPs, precipitation, distillation, and crystallization for the systematic treatment of EC-GFW. In this paper, the optimal conditions for the processes after pre-treatment were investigated. The optimal operating parameters of UV/Fenton process were determined to be 180 min of reaction time, 4 of initial pH, 0.6 mol/L of H 2 O 2 dosage, 10:1 of n(H 2 O 2): n(Fe2+) value, and 30 W of UV power. Fenton's reagent was added in two steps (0 min and 90 min) for effective utilization. The results showed that the TOC (Total organic carbon) removal efficiency during the two-stage oxidation reached 93% with TOC in the effluent of 132 mg/L. Then, 82.3% of sulfate ions were removed by the desulfurization process using 50 g/L of CaCl 2 within 10 min at a pH of 5 before distillation. It was found that the TOC in the influent of distillation played a decisive role in the quality of the effluent and purity of the crystalline salt, which was expected to be controlled lower than 132 mg/L. The final condensate could utilize to reuse, 99% of main pollutants of which have been removed, reducing the pressure of water supply on site. Simultaneously, the industrial-grade NaCl with extensive application prospect can be recovered. In this paper, Magnesium Zinc Ferrite (MZF) nanoparticles (Mg 0.8-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 , where x = 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6) are successfully fabricated by combustion process. The prepared nanoparticles are characterized through XRD, FTIR, UV, SEM, EDS and TEM. It has been confirmed that the samples produced cubic spinel structure with crystal size in the range of 13–15 nm. From the ultraviolet spectrum, the optical band gap is calculated which ranges from 5.6 to 4.6 eV. TEM micrographs confirm the nanocrystalline nature of combustion derived ferrite nanoparticles with average particle diameter of 7–28 nm. Antibacterial studies confirmed that the nanoparticles are toxic to Pseudomonas aeruginosa consists of greatest zone of inhibition of 25 mm. The antibacterial and photocatalytic studies exhibited improved activity which is strongly influenced by the zinc doping. Photocatalytic degradation study reveal that the prepared nanoparticles function as perfect catalyst for degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) dye and Textile Dyeing Waste Water (TDWW) under UV light, thus revealing their potential usage on organic pollutants. • F and Sn simultaneously doped TiO 2 nanoparticles were synthesized by sol gel method. • Showed body centered tetragonal structure of anatase TiO 2 NPs. • Showed good antibacterial and antifungal activity. • Sn-F/TiO 2 NPs effectively degrade a thiazine dye at 90 min of UV and visible light irradiation. • Methylene blue was degraded under UV and visible light with an effective rate constant of 0.0345/min and 0.987/min respectively. Drugs of abuse are a group of emerging contaminants. As the prevalence of manufacture and consumption, there is a growing global environmental burden and ecological risk from the continuous release of these contaminants into environment. The widespread occurrence of drugs of abuse in waste wasters and surface waters is due to the incomplete removal through traditional wastewater treatment plants in different regions around the world. Although their environmental concentrations are not very high, they can potentially influence the aquatic organisms and ecosystem function. This paper reviews the occurrence of drugs of abuse and their metabolites in waste waters and surface waters, their bioaccumulation in aquatic plants, fishes and benthic organisms and even top predators, and the toxicological effects such as genotoxic effect, cytotoxic effect and even behavioral effect on aquatic organisms. In summary, drugs of abuse occur widely in aquatic environment, and may exert adverse impact on aquatic organisms at molecular, cellular or individual level, and even on aquatic ecosystem.
