Recent political processes have rendered people with dementia an increasingly surveilled population. Surveillance is a contentious issue within dementia research, spanning technological monitoring, biomarker research and epidemiological data gathering. This paper explores surveillance in the relationships of people affected by dementia, how older relatives both with and without diagnoses are surveilled in everyday interactions, and the importance of expectations in guiding surveillance. This paper presents data from 41 in-depth interviews with people affected by dementia living in the community in the United Kingdom. Agedness was a key contributor to expectations that a person may have dementia, based on previous experiences, media accounts and wider awareness. Expectations provoked surveillance in interactions, with participants looking for signs of dementia when interacting with older relatives. Older people also enacted self-surveillance, monitoring their own behaviour. Various actions could be attributed to dementia because interpretation is malleable, partly vindicating expectations while leaving some uncertainties. Expectant surveillance transformed people's experiences because they organised their own actions, and interpreted those of others, in line with pre-existing meanings. The ability to interpret behaviours to fit expectations can bring coherence to uncertainties of ageing, cognition and dementia, but risks ascribing dementia to many older people who straddle those uncertainties. Families of children with Down syndrome experience complex lives and needs, yet the few existing studies on these families are written in conventional academic prose that is not optimal for knowledge translation beyond academia, particularly for busy healthcare professionals. In this paper, we Depart Radically in Academic Writing (DRAW) (Mackinlay, 2022) and present data poetry and two case studies that draw upon semi-structured interviews with mothers, fathers, and siblings, who were interviewed separately about their experiences of having a child/sibling with Down syndrome. We introduce our interdisciplinary team that includes academics and clinicians to contextualise our focus on research translation. We demonstrate that writing with creative criticality (i.e. 'DRAWing') contributes an embodied and affective understanding of research participants' stories, which is largely lacking in the academic literature on families of children with Down syndrome and the sociology of health and illness field more broadly. Moreover, DRAWing can impact audiences emotionally as well as intellectually (Richardson, 2003, p. 924), which has important knowledge translation implications for both healthcare professionals and these families. People with contested illnesses such as Gulf War Syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) have struggled to have their claims to chemical injury recognised as scientifically valid. Patients have thus built on shared experiences and formed 'embodied health movements', to challenge mainstream scientific understandings of toxicity and disease causality. Digital technologies have changed the scale and scope of patient sharing and collaboration, yet little attention has been paid to how patients govern each others' scientific claims. This paper draws from an online qualitative survey of forum users with self-reported MCS (N = 186) to investigate how patient groups internally debate scientificity – in this case over a controversial new 'neural retraining' treatment. Despite their own scientific marginalisation, MCS patients conducted 'boundary-work' to demarcate scientifically legitimate claims from 'pseudo-science' in their analysis of peer theories, and used scientific criteria as a powerful tool to claim and dispute epistemic authority. Moreover, this inter-patient boundary-work had profound social and therapeutic implications in the movement, particularly with respect to the politics of recognition, community solidarity and peer support. This paper draws on focus groups with young Australian males across a range of social demographics and ages in primary school years (5-12 years). It investigates the role of physical activity and dietary behaviours in the lives of young males. The paper will articulate the way in which young males come to perceive physical activity and dietary behaviours, including broader constructions of health, within the context of their lives. Understanding the decision making of young males' around physical activity and dietary behaviours will play a significant role in the health outcomes of adult men by through improved targeted health education and health promotion programs for this cohort. Australia is rapidly becoming home to an increasing number of Polynesians. While the Maori/Pacific Islander 'economic migrant' may appear fit and healthy, statistically the incidence of diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease is extremely high. When this profile is coupled with family reunion migration of older relatives who are living longer, it represents an escalation of current and future outlay for Australian health services. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 67 Polynesian migrants in regard to their perceptions of health and illness, and their experience of health services in Sydney and the Hunter region of New South Wales. Three key respondents, all Polynesian nurses practising in Australia, were also interviewed. The findings indicate a concentration of disadvantage concerning educational achievement, skill levels and health literacy that reinforce the process whereby social disadvantage impacts on health outcomes. This study also reveals a nexus of issues around cultural behaviours and poverty that contribute to the incidence of obesity-related illness and limit compliance with recommended preventative measures and treatments. This paper includes a discussion of the socio-political context of health delivery to Maori and Pacific Islander migrants and how the contraction of services under neoliberal 'belt tightening' undermines potential capacity to treat culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations effectively. As Australian scholarship has traditionally concentrated on Melanesia, there is very little research on Polynesians who are one of our burgeoning migrant groups. This paper considers how 'health behaviours' are imagined and practised in contemporary society, considering the combination of commercial products such as over the counter (OTC) statins and functional foods with more established 'healthy behaviours' in everyday life. Using data from users of low dose statins licensed for OTC sale in the UK and functional foods, we consider policy fears that such products would dilute efforts at healthy living. In line with sociological literature, we encountered resistance to pill-taking and accounts of health behaviour that show this to be a complex category that may involve functional or mundane foods, and supplements, may be highly targeted at heart health, or more defuse goals, or involve a degree of vagueness as to what is being used and why. Thinking about these practices as a form of 'DIY' provides a useful supplement to sociological interest in lay rationality, drawing attention to the objects rather than knowledges enrolled, and the provisional nature of health practices. Dementia education and management is a major challenge nationally. However in the remote Aboriginal context, where the prevalence of dementia is five times greater than the national rate, the challenge is made more complex by cultural and linguistic differences between providers and consumers. Tins paper presents findings from the evaluation of a targeted dementia awareness resource piloted in three Aboriginal languages as well as English. It focuses on the intercultural communication aspects of the evaluation adding to the limited body of knowledge about communications with speakers of Australian Aboriginal languages. It identifies elements of effective intercultural communication in dementia education, implications for health literacy and considers the difference that culturally safe intercultural communication can make to a single issue such as dementia awareness. Contemporary health policy increasingly positions responsibility for the management of health with the individual which reflects newer neo-liberal discourses of health. Such an approach can be seen as problematic in the context of men's health, with men tending to be seen as largely 'irresponsible' towards their own health. This paper addresses this question by drawing on qualitative data on how men conceptualise responsibility for health. Whilst the desire to be responsible for health was borne by most of the men in the study, this was not always reflected in practice. There was also evidence of strategies that men adopted for either divesting themselves of responsibility for health or for legitimising lack of responsibility. In some instances, acting 'irresponsibly' was what defined participants as 'real men'. The implications of these findings for men's health policy are discussed with specific reference to the recent publication of Ireland's National Men's Health Policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
