The paper proposed a novel intelligent transmission surface (ITS) aided transmitter in an intelligent reflection surface (IRS) assisted multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network. The ITS deployed in the transmitter architecture can reduce the power consumption in signal beamforming at the base station (BS), and the IRS can help the information transfer from the ITS-aided transmitter to the users. We first maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of the users by jointly designing the beamforming vector at the BS and the phase shifts of ITS and IRS. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, we propose an effective algorithm in which the Lagrangian dual transform, the alternative optimization (AO) algorithm and the quadratic transform (QT) method are adopted to simplify the objective function. Then, the bisection search and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm are considered to design the optimal beamforming vector and phase shifts of ITS and IRS, respectively. This paper introduces a novel approach of utilizing the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for joint data modulation and signal beamforming in a multi-user downlink cellular network by leveraging the idea of backscatter communication. We present a general framework in which the RIS, referred to as modulating intelligent surface (MIS) in this paper, is used to: $i$) beamform the signals for a set of users whose data modulation is already performed by the base station (BS), and at the same time, $ii$) embed the data of a different set of users by passively modulating the deliberately sent carrier signals from the BS to the RIS. To maximize each user’s spectral efficiency, a joint non-convex optimization problem is formulated under the sum minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion. Alternating optimization is used to divide the original joint problem into two tasks of: $i$) separately optimizing the MIS phase-shifts for passive beamforming along with data embedding for the BS- and MIS-served users, respectively, and $ii$) jointly optimizing the active precoder and the receive scaling factor for the BS- and MIS-served users, respectively. While the solution to the latter joint problem is found in closed-form using traditional optimization techniques, the optimal phase-shifts at the MIS are obtained by deriving the appropriate optimization-oriented vector approximate message passing (OOVAMP) algorithm. Moreover, the original joint problem is solved under both ideal and practical constraints on the MIS phase shifts, namely, the unimodular constraint and assuming each MIS element to be terminated by a variable reactive load. The proposed MIS-assisted scheme is compared against state-of-the-art RIS-assisted wireless communication schemes and simulation results reveal that it brings substantial improvements in terms of system throughput while supporting a much higher number of users. In this paper, we consider deploying an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to enhance the downlink (DL) energy transfer and uplink (UL) information transmission efficiency for secure multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs). We aim to maximize the secrecy throughput of all users by jointly optimizing the DL/UL time allocation, the energy transmit covariance matrix of hybrid access point (AP), the information transmit beamforming matrix of users and the phase shifts of IRS in DL/UL, subject to constraints of energy/information transmit power at the hybrid AP/users and that of unit-modulus IRS phase shifts for DL/UL. To tackle the non-convex problem, we first transform the original problem into an equivalent form based on the mean-square error (MSE) method given time allocation, and then apply the alternating algorithm to update the optimization variables iteratively. Specifically, the energy covariance matrix and the information beamforming matrix are obtained based on the dual subgradient method. For the IRS phase shifts, we investigate two IRS beamforming reflection setups, namely different DL/UL IRS beamforming and identical DL/UL IRS beamforming. For the former case, the second-order cone programming technique and the Majorization-Minimization algorithm/element by element iterative algorithm are applied to obtain the DL and UL IRS phase shifts, respectively. For the latter case, the IRS phase shifts are obtained by the successive convex approximation technique. To further reduce the computational complexity of the single-user system, we derive the closed-form solutions of IRS phase shifts in each iteration for the two different reflection setups. In this paper, a reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) uplink (UL) rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) system is investigated which targets to achieve better rate performance and enhanced coverage capability for multiple users. The considered UL RSMA model splits the rate for each user by dividing their message into multiple parts and hence exploits all the necessary degrees of freedom to achieve maximum capacity region and high user fairness. In particular, we focus on the sum-rate maximization for considered UL RSMA system subject to joint optimization of power allocation to the UL users and beamforming design, i.e., active receive beamforming at the base-station (BS) and passive beamforming at multiple RISs. To efficiently mitigate high inter-node interference in multi-user scenario, we first provided a low-complex user pairing scheme based on k-means clustering and then develop an effective low-cost alternating optimization framework to solve the joint optimization problem sub-optimally by decoupling the problem into different sub-problems of power allocation and beamforming design. Specifically, the sub-problems of power allocation and beamforming design are solved using successive convex approximation, Riemannian manifold and fractional programming techniques. Later, the unified solution based on block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed. Extensive numerical simulations validate that the user-clustering effectively significantly improves the performance gain and the considered RSMA system outperforms the conventional multiple schemes in terms rate and user-fairness. Also, the exploitation of spatial correlation among each RIS elements i.e., non-diagonal phase-matrices at each RIS achieve better performance that conventional diagonal phase-matrices setting. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can be employed in a cell-free system to create favorable propagation conditions from base stations (BSs) to users via configurable elements. However, prior works on RIS-aided cell-free system designs mainly rely on the instantaneous channel state information (CSI), which may incur substantial overhead due to extremely high dimensions of estimated channels. To mitigate this issue, a low-complexity algorithm via the two-timescale transmission protocol is proposed in this paper, where the joint beamforming at BSs and RISs is facilitated via alternating optimization framework to maximize the average weighted sum-rate. Specifically, the passive beamformers at RISs are optimized through the statistical CSI, and the transmit beamformers at BSs are based on the instantaneous CSI of effective channels. In this manner, a closed-form expression for the achievable weighted sum-rate is derived, which enables the evaluation of the impact of key parameters on system performance. To gain more insights, a special case without line-of-sight (LoS) components is further investigated, where a power gain on the order of $\mathcal {O}(M)$ is achieved, with $M$ being the BS antennas number. Numerical results validate the tightness of our derived analytical expression and show the fast convergence of the proposed algorithm. Findings illustrate that the performance of the proposed algorithm with two-timescale CSI is comparable to that with instantaneous CSI in low or moderate SNR regime. The impact of key system parameters such as the number of RIS elements, CSI settings and Rician factor is also evaluated. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology which can be integrated with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to improve the secrecy performance. In this paper, we propose two IRS-aided schemes to enhance the security of NOMA networks for the internal and external eavesdropping, respectively. First, to deal with an internal untrusted user, the secrecy rate maximization problem is formulated by jointly optimizing the active and passive beamforming, while meeting the quality of service (QoS) demand of the untrusted user, decoding order constraints, and unit modulus constraints of IRS elements. Furthermore, considering a worse scenario with both internal and external eavesdroppers, we minimize the transmit power of legitimate signals with both users’ QoS demands satisfied. In this way, the confidential information leakage will be mitigated and more transmit power can be allocated as artificial jamming to attenuate the eavesdropping. To tackle the non-convex optimization, the original problem in each scheme is first decomposed into two subproblems, which are approximated into convex ones via the semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Then, by means of alternating optimization, the suboptimal solutions to the original problems can be obtained. This paper studies the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based multiple intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) network, where the hovering UAV acts as a base station, and the IRS enhances signal transmission to across obstacle between users and UAV. To achieve the maximum sum rate of proposed communication scenario, a non-convex problem considering IRS association results, hovering altitude of UAV, and the phase shift design of multi-IRS is formulated. From the IRS association problem, we can find that the IRS association results are coupled to the decoding order of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). To tackle this, a mathematical interference expansion scheme is developed to decouple it and transform it to convex by binary relaxation method. The non-convexity of hovering altitude optimization problem is solved by logarithm operation, approximation, and auxiliary matrices. For the phase shift optimization problem of multi-IRS, we propose a gradient approximation based initial scheme and develop a univariate optimization based approach on the basis to achieve the users sum rate improvement in multi-IRS. In the end, we compare the proposed scheme with baseline scheme to present the superiority of this work under various network settings. This paper tackles the problem of joint active and passive beamforming optimization for an intelligent reflective surface (IRS)-assisted multi-user downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system under both ideal and practical IRS phase shifts. We aim to maximize the spectral efficiency of the users by minimizing the sum mean square error (MSE) of the users’ received symbols. For this, a joint non-convex optimization problem is formulated under the sum minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. Alternating minimization is used to break the original joint optimization problem into the separate optimization of the active precoding matrix for the base station (BS) and the matrix of phase shifts for the IRS. While the MMSE active precoder is obtained in closed-form, the IRS phase shifts are optimized iteratively using a modified version (developed in this paper) of the vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm. Moreover, the underlying joint optimization problem is solved under two different models for the IRS phase shifts, namely by assuming $i$) a unimodular (i.e., ideal) constraint on the reflection coefficients and $ii$) a more practical reflection elements termination by a variable reactive load (which inherently introduces the phase-dependent amplitude attenuation in the IRS phase shifts). Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method under both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) and to show the effect of the practical constraint on the system throughput. Cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) enable a network platform for beyond the fifth generation of communication networks (B5G), which incorporates the advances in cloud computing technologies to modern radio access networks. Recently, rate splitting multiple access (RSMA), relying on multi-antenna rate splitting (RS) at the transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receivers, has been shown to manage the interference in multi-antenna communication networks efficiently. This paper considers applying RSMA in C-RAN. We address the practical challenge of a transmitter that only knows the statistical channel state information (CSI) of the users. To this end, the paper investigates the problem of stochastic coordinated beamforming (SCB) optimization to maximize the ergodic sum-rate (ESR) in the network. Furthermore, we propose a scalable and robust RS scheme where the number of the common streams to be decoded at each user scales linearly with the number of users, and the common stream selection only depends on the statistical CSI. The setup leads to a challenging stochastic and non-convex optimization problem. A sample average approximation (SAA) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) based algorithm is adopted to tackle the intractable stochastic non-convex optimization and guarantee convergence to a stationary point asymptotically. The numerical simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed RS strategy and show a gain up to 27% in the achievable ESR compared with state-of-the-art schemes, namely treating interference as noise (TIN) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes. In this paper, we present the computation-efficient resource allocation (RA) schemes for millimeter-wave mobile edge computing (mmWave-MEC) system with the aid of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which is used to assist the uplink communication from the users to the base station (BS). By means of the theoretical analysis, the achievable rate and computation efficiency (CE) are derived. Then, the optimization problem for the CE maximization under the constraints of the minimum rate, maximum power consumption and local CPU frequency is formulated, where the joint design of the hybrid beamforming at the BS and the passive beamforming at the RIS as well as the local resource allocation of each user is carried out. An effective iterative algorithm based on the penalized inexact block coordinate descent (BCD) method is proposed to obtain the computation-efficient RA scheme. Next, a low-complexity suboptimal RA scheme based on the BCD method is proposed, and corresponding algorithm is presented. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes are effective, and high CE can be attained. Moreover, the second scheme can achieve the CE performance close to the first scheme but with lower complexity. Besides, it is effective to deploy the RIS scheme in mmWave-MEC system, which can strike a balance between the CE and energy consumption when compared to the conventional relay schemes. Plane spiral orbital angular momentum (PSOAM) mode-groups (MGs) and multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) serve as two emerging techniques for achieving high spectral efficiency (SE) in the next-generation networks. In this paper, a PSOAM MGs based multi-user MIMO-NOMA system is studied, where the base station transmits data to users by utilizing the generated PSOAM beams. For such scenario, the interference between users in different PSOAM mode groups can be avoided, which leads to a significant performance enhancement. We aim to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system subject to the constraints of the total transmission power and the minimum data rate. This designed optimization problem is non-convex owing to the interference among users, and hence is quite difficult to tackle directly. To solve this issue, we develop a dual layer resource allocation algorithm where the bisection method is exploited in the outer layer to obtain the optimal EE and a resource distributed iterative algorithm is exploited in the inner layer to optimize the transmit power. Besides, an alternative resource allocation algorithm with Deep Belief Networks (DBN) is proposed to cope with the requirement for low computational complexity. Simulation results verify the theoretical findings and demonstrate the proposed algorithms on the PSOAM MGs based MIMO-NOMA system can obtain a better performance comparing to the conventional MIMO-NOMA system in terms of EE. In this paper, we propose a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) transmission scheme, which is assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) consisting of a large number of passive reflecting elements. In the literature, it has been proved that nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can achieve the same performance as computationally complex dirty paper coding, where the quasi-degradation condition is satisfied, conditioned on the users’ channels fall in the quasi-degradation region. However, in a conventional communication scenario, it is difficult to guarantee the quasi-degradation, because the channels are determined by the propagation environments and cannot be reconfigured. To overcome this difficulty, we focus on an IRS-assisted MISO NOMA system, where the wireless channels can be effectively tuned. We optimize the beamforming vectors and the IRS phase shift matrix for minimizing transmission power. Furthermore, we propose an improved quasi-degradation condition by using IRS, which can ensure that NOMA achieves the capacity region with high possibility. For a comparison, we study zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) as well, where the beamforming vectors and the IRS phase shift matrix are also jointly optimized. Comparing NOMA with ZFBF, it is shown that, with the same IRS phase shift matrix and the improved quasi-degradation condition, NOMA always outperforms ZFBF. At the same time, we identify the condition under which ZFBF outperforms NOMA, which motivates the proposed hybrid NOMA transmission. Simulation results show that the proposed IRS-assisted MISO system outperforms the MISO case without IRS, and the hybrid NOMA transmission scheme always achieves better performance than orthogonal multiple access. In this paper, we consider an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted cognitive radio system and maximize the secondary user (SU) rate by jointly optimizing the transmit power of secondary transmitter (ST) and the IRS’s reflect beamforming, subject to the constraints of the minimum required signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the primary receiver, the ST’s maximum transmit power, and the unit modulus of the IRS reflect beamforming vector. This joint optimization problem can be solved suboptimally by the non-convex optimization techniques, which however usually require complicated mathematical transformations and are computationally intensive. To address this challenge, we propose an algorithm based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method. To achieve a higher learning efficiency and a lower reward variance, we propose another algorithm based on the soft actor-critic (SAC) method. In these proposed algorithms, a reward impact adjustment approach is proposed to improve their learning efficiency and stability. Simulation results show that the two proposed algorithms can achieve comparable SU rate performance with much shorter running time, as compared to the existing non-convex optimization-based benchmark algorithm, and that the proposed SAC-based algorithm learns faster and achieves a higher average reward with lower variance, as compared to the proposed DDPG-based algorithm. The integration of aerial platforms to provide ubiquitous coverage and connectivity for densely deployed terrestrial networks is expected to be a reality in the emerging sixth-generation networks. Energy-effificient and secure transmission designs are two important components for integrated terrestrial-aerial networks (ITAN). Inlight of the potential of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for significantly reducing the system power consumption and boosting information security, this paper proposes a multi-layer RIS-assisted secure ITAN architecture to defend against simultaneous jamming and eavesdropping attacks, and investigates energy-efficient hybrid beamforming for it. Specifically, with the availability of imperfect angular channel state information (CSI), we propose a block coordinate descent (BCD) framework for the joint optimization of the user’s received decoder, the terrestrial and aerial digital precoder, and the multi-layer RIS analog precoder to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) performance. For the design of the received decoder, a heuristic beamforming scheme is proposed to convert the worst-case design problem into a min-max one and facilitate the developing a closed-form solution. For the design of the digital precoder, we propose an iterative sequential convex approximation approach via capitalizing the auxiliary variables and first-order Taylor series expansion. Finally, a monotonic vertex-update algorithm with a penalty convex-concave procedure (P-CCP) is proposed to obtain the analog precoder with satisfactory performance. Owing to the factors such as controllable mobility, ready-to-use technology, low cost, easy implementation, and so on, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) possesses tremendous potential to be one of the primary candidates for next-generation (6G) wireless networks. This paper presents a UAV-assisted multiuser communication network where a multiple antenna UAV base station (BS) serves multiple single antenna ground users (GUs). UAV-BS uses a laser source-based charging mechanism to fulfill its power requirement and applies simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in the downlink in order to provide desired power to energy-constrained GUs. Also, a clustering-based hybrid multiple access technique is used that combines both orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) signaling to transmit the information to all GUs, simultaneously. Due to the involved analytical complexity corresponding to the multiple antennas and users, we use a hybrid beamforming method for efficient communication. Next, we analyze the performance of the proposed framework in terms of user outage probabilities, their respective throughput, and average power harvested considering non-linear energy harvesting and derive expressions of these performance metrics. Moreover, we formulate an optimization problem where the throughput of one GU is maximized by optimally choosing the power allocation parameter while ensuring the desired target throughput at other GU in each cluster. We also illustrate how crucial is the optimal selection of the target rates to maximize the network performance. Simulation results are provided to validate the accuracy of derived expressions and to highlight the dominance of hybrid beamforming and hybrid NOMA compared to conventional methods on the performance of the considered network. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been regarded as a promising and revolutionary technology for future wireless communication systems owing to its capability of tailoring signal propagation environment in an energy/spectrum/ hardware-efficient manner. However, most existing studies on IRS optimizations are based on a simple and ideal reflection model that is impractical in hardware implementation, which thus leads to severe performance loss in realistic wideband/multi-band systems. To deal with this problem, in this paper we first propose a more practical and more tractable IRS reflection model that describes the difference of reflection responses for signals at different frequencies. Then, we investigate the joint transmit beamforming and IRS reflection beamforming design for an IRS-assisted multi-cell multi-band system. Both power minimization and sum-rate maximization problems are solved by exploiting popular second-order cone programming (SOCP), Riemannian manifold, minimization-majorization (MM), weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE), and block coordinate descent (BCD) methods. Simulation results illustrate the significant performance improvement of our proposed joint transmit beamforming and reflection design algorithms based on the practical reflection model in terms of power saving and rate enhancement. Caching popular contents at edge networks (such as small-cell base stations) has been proposed to deal with the ever-growing mobile traffic. At the meantime, recommendation system is able to shape user demands for further prompting caching gain. In this paper, we study a multi-antenna multi-cell edge network employing transmit beamforming with caching-aware recommendation and user association. We first establish a framework for the joint problem of beamforming, user association, content caching and recommendation to minimize the content transmission delay of mobile users, by specifying a set of necessary conditions for all four component functions of the network. The resulting optimization problem corresponds to a non-convex, multi-timescale, and mixed-integer programming problem, which is hard to handle. To deal with the difficulty in solving the joint optimization problem by the direct formulation, we equivalently decompose it into three sub-problems. Then, we develop a computationally-efficient iterative algorithm to obtain the sub-optimal solution, where the three subproblems are tackled iteratively. This paper studies an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted wireless-powered communication network (WPCN), where a hybrid access point (HAP) broadcasts energy signals to multiple devices for their energy harvesting in the downlink (DL) and then the devices use the harvested energy to transmit information signals to the HAP in the uplink (UL) with the help of an IRS. In particular, we propose three types of IRS beamforming configurations, namely fully dynamic IRS beamforming (FDBF), partially dynamic IRS beamforming (PDBF), and static IRS beamforming (SBF), to strike a balance between the system performance and signaling overhead as well as implementation complexity. Moreover, we adopt a practical non-linear energy harvesting (EH) model, and leverage a power-splitting (PS) EH receiver architecture with multiple rectifiers to avoid the input radio frequency power to get stuck into the saturation regime. We aim to minimize the transmit energy consumption at the HAP by jointly optimizing the DL/UL time allocation, the HAP/devices transmit power, the PS factor, and IRS phase shifts, subject to a set of minimum throughput requirements for individual devices. To address the resulting non-convex optimization problems, a successive convex approximation (SCA) based alternating optimization algorithm is proposed. Moreover, we study the case with the ideal linear EH model and two algorithms, namely SCA-based algorithm and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) algorithm, are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed designs over various benchmark schemes and also unveil the importance of the joint design of IRS beamforming and PS rectifiers for achieving energy efficient WPCNs in practice. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging cost-efficient technology to enhance communication performance by implementing a large number of passive reflecting elements with tunable phases in wireless systems. In this paper, we propose a general framework for the IRS-aided MIMO system designs under both single-user and multi-user setups, in which the diverse performance metrics including weighted mutual information and weighted MSE, and the realistic multiple weighted power constraint are taken into consideration. Leveraging the alternating optimization approach, the optimal IRS phase shifts are obtained in semi-closed forms. Specifically, based on the matrix-monotonic optimization theory, it is found that optimizing IRS phase shifts is essentially equivalent to tuning the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the MSE matrix. Then the proposed general framework is extended to a multi-user system by introducing a majorization-minimization (MM)-based method for IRS phase shift optimization. Simulation results show that our proposed optimal design brings significant enhancement on the chosen performance metric compared to the traditional MIMO systems without the IRS, and also significantly outperforms various benchmark designs in both single-user and multi-user systems. In this paper, a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted wireless powered communication network (WPCN) architecture is proposed for power-constrained Internet-of-Things (IoT) smart devices, where IRS is exploited to improve the performance of WPCN under imperfect channel state information (CSI). We formulate a hybrid access point (HAP) transmit energy minimization problem by jointly optimizing time allocation, HAP energy beamforming, receiving beamforming, user transmit power allocation, IRS energy reflection coefficient and information reflection coefficient under the imperfect CSI and non-linear energy harvesting model. On account of the high coupling of optimization variables, the formulated problem is a non-convex optimization problem that is difficult to solve directly. To address the above-mentioned challenging problem, alternating optimization (AO) technique is applied to decouple the optimization variables to solve the problem. Specifically, through AO, time allocation, HAP energy beamforming, receiving beamforming, user transmit power allocation, IRS energy reflection coefficient and information reflection coefficient are divided into three sub-problems to be solved alternately. Achieving high channel estimation accuracy and reducing hardware cost as well as power dissipation constitute substantial challenges in the design of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To resolve these difficulties, sophisticated pilot designs have been conceived for the family of energy-efficient hybrid analog-digital (HAD) beamforming architecture relying on adaptive-resolution analog-to-digital converters (RADCs). In this paper, we jointly optimize the pilot sequences, the number of RADC quantization bits and the hybrid receiver combiner in the uplink of multiuser massive MIMO systems. We solve the associated mean square error (MSE) minimization problem of channel estimation in the context of correlated Rayleigh fading channels subject to practical constraints. The associated mixed-integer problem is quite challenging due to the nonconvex nature of the objective function and of the constraints. By relying on advanced fractional programming (FP) techniques, we first recast the original problem into a more tractable yet equivalent form, which allows the decoupling of the fractional objective function. We then conceive a pair of novel algorithms for solving the resultant problems for codebook-based and codebook-free pilot schemes, respectively. To reduce the design complexity, we also propose a simplified algorithm for the codebook-based pilot scheme. In this paper, we study the optimal resource allocation algorithm design for large intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems. To facilitate efficient system design for large IRSs, instead of jointly optimizing all the IRS elements, we partition the IRS into several tiles and employ a scalable optimization framework comprising an offline design stage and an online optimization stage. In the offline stage, the IRS elements of each tile are jointly designed to support a set of different phase shift configurations, referred to as transmission modes, while the best transmission mode is selected from the set for each tile in the online stage. Given a transmission mode set, we aim to minimize the total base station (BS) transmit power by jointly optimizing the beamforming and the transmission mode selection policy taking into account the quality-of-service requirements of information decoding and non-linear energy harvesting receivers, respectively. Although the resource allocation algorithm design is formulated as a non-convex combinatorial optimization problem, we solve it optimally by applying the branch-and-bound (BnB) approach which entails a high computational complexity. To strike a balance between optimality and computational complexity, we also develop an efficient suboptimal algorithm capitalizing on the penalty method and successive convex approximation. Our simulation results show that the proposed designs enable considerable power savings compared to several baseline schemes. Moreover, our results reveal that by properly adjusting the numbers of tiles and transmission modes, the proposed scalable optimization framework indeed facilitates online design for large IRSs. Besides, our results confirm that the advocated physics-based model and scalable optimization framework enable a flexible trade-off between performance and complexity, which is vital for realizing the performance gains promised by large IRS-assisted communication systems in practice. This paper investigates and analyzes the number of reflecting elements for guaranteed energy- and spectral-efficient intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted communication systems. As opposed to previous works where the energy efficiency (EE)/the spectral efficiency (SE) maximization or the EE-SE tradeoff was considered, our goal is to minimize the number of reflecting elements in the IRS-assisted system. Besides, both the EE and the SE constraints are considered in the number minimization problem, which has not been addressed in existing works. However, both the EE and the SE performance do not admit exact closed-form expressions due to the non-convexity incurred by joint beamforming and phase shift design. In order to make the optimization problem tractable, we resort to their performance bounds for problem reformulation. By decomposing the problem into two sub-problems, we are able to derive closed-form expressions for the minimum number of reflecting elements, and both the coherent phase shift (CPS)-oriented solution and the random phase shift (RPS)-oriented solution are proposed for comparison. In order to shed light on the practical design, the relationship between the derived number of reflecting elements is established for both schemes, and the upper bounds on both the EE and the SE thresholds and the placement of the IRS to achieve only one reflecting element are obtained. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are capable of enhancing the capacity of wireless networks at a low cost. In practical RIS-assisted communication systems, the acquisition of channel state information (CSI) and RIS reflection optimization constitute a pair of challenges. In this paper, a low-complexity channel estimation and passive beamforming design is proposed. First of all, we conceive a low-complexity framework for maximizing the achievable rate of RIS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems having discrete phase shifts at each RIS element. In contrast to existing solutions, the proposed arrangement partitions the channel training stage into several phases, where the RIS reflection coefficients are pre-designed and the effective superposed channel is estimated instead of separately training the source-destination and source-RIS-destination links. Based on this, the active beamformer can be designed at low complexity and the RIS reflection optimization is performed by selecting that one from the pre-designed training set which maximizes the achievable rate. Secondly, we propose novel techniques for generating the training set of RIS reflection coefficients. The theoretical performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed and compared to the optimal RIS configuration. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework is more competitive than its existing counterparts when relying on imperfect CSI, especially for rapidly time-varying channels having short channel coherence time. This paper investigates the security enhancement of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network, where a base station (BS) serves users securely with the assistance of distributed IRSs. Considering that eavesdropper’s instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is challenging to acquire in practice, we utilize secrecy outage probability (SOP) as the security metric. A problem of maximizing the minimum secrecy rate among users, by jointly optimizing transmit beamforming at the BS and phase shifts of the IRSs, is formulated. For a special case with a single-antenna BS, we derive the closed-form SOP expressions and propose a novel ring-penalty based successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm to design transmit power and phase shifts jointly. For a general multi-antenna BS case, we develop a Bernstein-type inequality based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to solve the challenging problem. Numerical results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithms over the baseline schemes. The results also show that: 1) the maximum secrecy rate is achieved when distributed IRSs share the reflecting elements equally; and 2) the distributed IRS deployment does not always outperform the centralized IRS deployment, due to the tradeoff between the number of IRSs and the reflecting elements equipped at each IRS. This paper proposes hybrid beamforming designs for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) backhaul systems equipped with uniform planar arrays (UPAs) of dual-polarization antennas at both the transmit and receive base stations. The proposed beamforming designs are to near-optimally solve optimization problems taking the dual-polarization UPA structure into account. Based on the solutions of optimization problems, this paper shows it is possible to generate the optimal dual-polarization beamformer from the optimal single-polarization beamformer sharing the same optimality. As specific examples, squared error and magnitude of inner product are considered respectively for optimization criteria. To optimize proposed beamformers, partial channel information is needed, and the use of low overhead pilot sequences is also proposed to figure out the required information. Simulation results verify that the resulting beamformers have the most uniform gain (with the squared error criterion) or the highest average gain (with the magnitude of inner product criterion) in the covering region with the UPA of dual-polarization antennas. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned to be a disruptive wireless communication technique that is capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we study a free-space RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system in far-field operation. To maximize the received power from the physical and electromagnetic nature point of view, a comprehensive optimization, including beamforming of the transmitter, phase shifts of the RIS, orientation and position of the RIS is formulated and addressed. After exploiting the property of line-of-sight (LoS) links, we derive closed-form solutions of beamforming and phase shifts. For the non-trivial RIS position optimization problem in arbitrary three-dimensional space, a dimensional-reducing theory is proved. The simulation results show that the proposed closed-form beamforming and phase shifts approach the upper bound of the received power. Over-the-air computation (AirComp) is a disruptive technique for fast wireless data aggregation in Internet of Things (IoT) networks via exploiting the waveform superposition property of multiple-access channels. However, the performance of AirComp is bottlenecked by the worst channel condition among all links between the IoT devices and the access point. In this paper, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted AirComp system is proposed to boost the received signal power and thus mitigate the performance bottleneck by reconfiguring the propagation channels. With an objective to minimize the AirComp distortion, we propose a joint design of AirComp transceivers and RIS phase-shifts, which however turns out to be a highly intractable non-convex programming problem. To this end, we develop a novel alternating minimization framework in conjunction with the successive convex approximation technique, which is proved to converge monotonically. To reduce the computational complexity, we transform the subproblem in each alternation as a smooth convex-concave saddle point problem, which is then tackled by proposing a Mirror-Prox method that only involves a sequence of closed-form updates. Simulations show that the computation time of the proposed algorithm can be two orders of magnitude smaller than that of the state-of-the-art algorithms, while achieving a similar distortion performance. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) stands out as a promising technology by enhancing the electromagnetic wave propagation environment with its passive reflecting elements. In this paper, we focus on the ergodic sum-rate analysis and maximization of the RIS-assisted uplink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-access channel (MAC) under Rician fading by exploiting full statistical channel state information (CSI). The spatial correlations at the base station, the users, and the RIS are also considered. By using the replica method originated in statistical physics, the closed-form asymptotic ergodic sum-rate of the system is first derived in the large-system regime on the account of the unique channel structure of the RIS-assisted MIMO-MAC system. Then, based on the derived asymptotic ergodic sum-rate, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to jointly design the transmit covariance matrix of users and the phase-shifting matrix of RIS with full statistical CSI. Simulation results are also demonstrated to verify the accuracy of the derived asymptotic ergodic sum-rate and the superiority of the proposed AO algorithm. The results reveal that the derived closed-form asymptotic ergodic sum-rate matches very well with the Monte Carlo results even for a small number of antennas, and the proposed AO algorithm can achieve up to 10 bps/Hz gain at high signal-to-noise (SNR) regime, which is therefore valuable for future RIS-assisted MIMO-MAC system designs. In this paper, a novel framework for guaranteeing ultra-reliable millimeter wave (mmW) communications using multiple artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) is proposed. The use of multiple AI-powered RISs allows changing the propagation direction of the signals transmitted from a mmW access point (AP) thereby improving coverage particularly for non-line-of-sight (NLoS) areas. However, due to the possibility of highly stochastic blockage over mmW links, designing an intelligent controller to jointly optimize the mmW AP beam and RIS phase shifts is a daunting task. In this regard, first, a parametric risk-sensitive episodic return is proposed to maximize the expected bitrate and mitigate the risk of mmW link blockage. Then, a closed-form approximation of the policy gradient of the risk-sensitive episodic return is analytically derived. Next, the problem of joint beamforming for mmW AP and phase shift control for mmW RISs is modeled as an identical payoff stochastic game within a cooperative multi-agent environment, in which the agents are the mmW AP and the RISs. Two centralized and distributed controllers are proposed to control the policies of the mmW AP and RISs. To directly find a near optimal solution, the parametric functional-form policies for the controllers are modeled using deep recurrent neural networks (RNNs). The deep RNN-based controllers are then trained based on the derived closed-form gradient of the risk-sensitive episodic return. It is proved that the gradient update algorithm converges to the same locally optimal parameters as the deep RNN-based centralized and distributed controllers. Simulation results show that the error between the policies of the optimal and the RNN-based controllers is less than 1.5%. This paper proposes to deploy multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in device-to-device (D2D)-underlaid cellular systems. The uplink sum-rate of the system is maximized by jointly optimizing the transmit powers of the users, the pairing of the cellular users (CUs) and D2D links, the receive beamforming of the base station (BS), and the configuration of the RISs, subject to the power limits and quality-of-service (QoS) of the users. To address the non-convexity of this problem, we develop a new block coordinate descent (BCD) framework which decouples the D2D-CU pairing, power allocation and receive beamforming, from the configuration of the RISs. Specifically, we derive closed-form expressions for the power allocation and receive beamforming under any D2D-CU pairing, which facilitates interpreting the D2D-CU pairing as a bipartite graph matching solved using the Hungarian algorithm. We transform the configuration of the RISs into a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) with multiple quadratic constraints. A low-complexity algorithm, named Riemannian manifold-based alternating direction method of multipliers (RM-ADMM), is developed to decompose the QCQP into simpler QCQPs with a single constraint each, and solve them efficiently in a decentralized manner. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the sum-rate of the D2D-underlaid system with a reduced complexity, as compared to its alternative based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising solution to build a programmable wireless environment with reconfigurable passive elements, which can achieve high spectral and energy efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the ergodic capacity of RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless systems in both uplink and downlink scenarios. Unlike most of prior works, where instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is assumed, we consider the realistic scenario with only statistical CSI. For both scenarios, we first present an analytical expressions for the ergodic sum capacity of the system. Based on which, the joint power control (or transmit beamforming) and phase shift design problem maximizing the ergodic sum capacity is formulated. Capitalizing on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), fractional programming (FP) and alternating optimization (AO) methods, efficient suboptimal solutions are obtained for the non-convex design problems. Simulation results are presented to validate the accuracy of the analytical ergodic sum capacity expressions and evaluate the impact of key system parameters such as CSI, Rician $K$ factor, number of RIS elements, and RIS location on the ergodic capacity performance. The findings suggest that the proposed statistical CSI design achieves decent performance compared with the instantaneous CSI based design. In this paper, we consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system aided by multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) that are deployed to increase the coverage and, possibly, the rank of the channel. We propose an optimization algorithm to configure the IRSs, which is aimed at maximizing the network sum-rate by exploiting only the statistical characterization of the locations of the mobile users. As a consequence, the proposed approach does not require the estimation of either instantaneous channel state information (CSI) or second-order channel statistics for IRS optimization, thus significantly relaxing (or even avoiding) the need of frequently reconfiguring the IRSs, which constitutes one of the most critical issues in IRS-assisted systems. This paper considers the downlink of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (CNOMA) systems. Our objective is to minimize the total transmit power by jointly optimizing the active beamforming vectors, transmit-relaying power, and RIS phase shifts. The formulated problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. To tackle this problem, the alternating optimization approach is utilized to decouple the variables. In each alternative procedure, the optimal solutions for the active beamforming vectors, transmit-relaying power and phase shifts are obtained. However, the proposed algorithm has high complexity since the optimal phase shifts are solved by integer linear programming (ILP) whose computational complexity is exponential in the number of variables. To strike a good computational complexity-optimality trade-off, a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm is proposed by adopting the iterative penalty function based semidefinite programming (SDP) and the successive refinement approaches. Numerical results illustrate that: i) the proposed RIS-CNOMA system, aided by our proposed algorithms, outperforms the conventional CNOMA system. ii) the proposed low-complexity suboptimal algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance. iii) whether the RIS-CNOMA system outperforms the RIS assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (RIS-NOMA) system depends not only on the users’ locations but also on the RIS’s location. This paper investigates robust and secure multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink communications assisted by a self-sustainable intelligent reflection surface (IRS), which can simultaneously reflect and harvest energy from the received signals. We study the joint design of beamformers at an access point (AP) and the phase shifts as well as the energy harvesting schedule at the IRS for maximizing the system sum-rate. The design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem taking into account the wireless energy harvesting capability of IRS elements, secure communications, and the robustness against the impact of channel state information (CSI) imperfection. Subsequently, we propose a computationally-efficient iterative algorithm to obtain a suboptimal solution to the design problem. In each iteration, $\mathcal {S}$ -procedure and the successive convex approximation are adopted to handle the intermediate optimization problem. Our simulation results unveil that: 1) there is a non-trivial trade-off between the system sum-rate and the self-sustainability of the IRS; 2) the performance gain achieved by the proposed scheme is saturated with a large number of energy harvesting IRS elements; 3) an IRS equipped with small bit-resolution discrete phase shifters is sufficient to achieve a considerable system sum-rate of the ideal case with continuous phase shifts. In this paper, we investigate secrecy-energy efficient hybrid beamforming (BF) schemes for a satellite-terrestrial integrated network, wherein a multibeam satellite system shares the millimeter wave spectrum with a cellular system. Under the assumption of imperfect angles of departure for the wiretap channels, the hybrid beamformer at the base station and digital beamformers at the satellite are jointly designed to maximize the achievable secrecy-energy efficiency, while satisfying signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio constraints of both the earth stations (ESs) and cellular users. Since the formulated optimization problem is nonconvex and mathematically intractable, we propose two robust BF schemes to obtain approximate solutions with low complexity. Specifically, for the case of a single ES, we integrate the Charnes-Cooper approach with an iterative search algorithm to convert the original nonconvex problem into a solvable one and obtain the BF weight vectors. In the case of multiple ESs, by exploiting the sequential convex approximation method, we convert the original problem into a linear one with multiple matrix inequalities and second-order cone constraints, for which we obtain a solution with satisfactory performance. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation for IRS-assisted green multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. To minimize the total transmit power, both the beamforming vectors at the access point (AP) and the phase shifts at multiple IRSs are jointly optimized, while taking into account the minimum required quality-of-service (QoS) of multiple users. First, two novel algorithms, namely a penalty-based alternating minimization (AltMin) algorithm and an inner approximation (IA) algorithm, are developed to tackle the non-convexity of the formulated optimization problem when perfect channel state information (CSI) is available. Existing designs employ semidefinite relaxation in AltMin-based algorithms, which, however, cannot ensure convergence. In contrast, the proposed penalty-based AltMin and IA algorithms are guaranteed to converge to a stationary point and a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the design problem, respectively. Second, the impact of imperfect knowledge of the CSI of the channels between the AP and the users is investigated. To this end, a non-convex robust optimization problem is formulated and the penalty-based AltMin algorithm is extended to obtain a stationary solution. Simulation results reveal a key trade-off between the speed of convergence and the achievable total transmit power for the two proposed algorithms. In addition, we show that the proposed algorithms can significantly reduce the total transmit power at the AP compared to various baseline schemes and that the optimal numbers of transmit antennas and IRS reflecting elements, which maximize the system energy efficiency of the considered system, are finite. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deemed as a promising solution to improve the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communications cost-effectively. In this paper, we consider a wireless network where multiple base stations (BSs) serve their respective users with the aid of distributed IRSs in the downlink communication. Specifically, each IRS assists in the transmission from its associated BS to user via passive beamforming, while in the meantime, it also randomly scatters the signals from other co-channel BSs, thus resulting in additional signal as well as interference paths in the network. As such, a new IRS-user/BS association problem arises pertaining to optimally balance the passive beamforming gains from all IRSs among different BS-user communication links. To address this new problem, we first derive a tractable lower bound of the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver of each user, termed average-signal-to-average-interference-plus-noise ratio (ASAINR), based on which two ASAINR balancing problems are formulated to maximize the minimum ASAINR among all users by optimizing the IRS-user associations without and with BS transmit power control, respectively. We also characterize the scaling behavior of user ASAINRs with the increasing number of IRS reflecting elements to investigate the different effects of IRS-reflected signal versus interference power. Moreover, to solve the two ASAINR balancing problems that are both non-convex optimization problems, we propose an optimal solution to the problem without BS power control and low-complexity suboptimal solutions to both problems by applying the branch-and-bound method and exploiting new properties of the IRS-user associations, respectively. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), as a revolutionary technique, appears to ameliorate undesirable propagation environment in a controllable manner, which has the potential to substantially boost security of private information in the future smart radio environment. Much recent attention has been directed to the RIS-enhanced secure communication, among which the terrestrial network scenarios are generally concerned, while the exploration of aerial-ground communication integrated with RIS remains an open issue. Furthermore, in the available research, the ideal assumption of line-of-sight channel for aerial-ground link cannot be exploited in complex urban environment. Inspired by this, we provide in this paper the secrecy rate maximization problem under a complex urban scenario, where the drone’s high mobility and RIS’s tunable capability are utilized to against the potential eavesdropper. Although the established problem is intractable to tackle, we devise an iterative algorithm combining alternating optimization and successive convex approximation method as the solution, which jointly optimizes the phase shifts, the drone’s trajectory along with transmit power for the single-user scenario. The proposed designs are also extended to the multi-user multi-eavesdropper system. Eventually, extensive simulation experiments indicate the remarkable benefits brought by our proposed scheme on secrecy performance and the necessity of optimizing phase shifts. In this paper, we study a multi-sine multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless power transfer (WPT) system with the objective to increase the output DC power. We jointly optimize the multi-sine waveform and beamforming accounting for the rectenna nonlinearity, and consider two combining schemes for the rectennas at the receiver, namely DC and RF combinings. For DC combining, the waveform and transmit beamforming are optimized, as a function of the channel state information (CSI). For RF combining, the optimal transmit and receive beamformings are provided in closed form and the waveform is optimized. We also consider a practical RF combining circuit using phase shifter and RF power combiner and optimize the waveform, transmit beamforming, and analog receive beamforming adaptive to the CSI. Two types of performance evaluations, based on the nonlinear rectenna model and accurate and realistic circuit simulations, are provided. The evaluations demonstrate that the joint waveform and beamforming design can increase the output DC power by leveraging the beamforming gain, the frequency diversity gain, and the rectenna nonlinearity. It also shows that the joint waveform and beamforming design provides a higher output DC power than the beamforming-only design with a relative gain of 180% in a two-transmit antenna sixteen-sinewave two-receive antenna setup. In this paper, we explore optimization-based and data-driven solutions in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user mobile edge computing (MEC) system, where the user equipment (UEs) can partially offload their computation tasks to the access point (AP). We aim at maximizing the total completed task-input bits (TCTB) of all UEs with limited energy budgets during a given time slot, through jointly optimizing the RIS reflecting coefficients, the AP’s receive beamforming vectors, and the UEs’ energy partition strategies for local computing and offloading. A three-step block coordinate descending (BCD) algorithm is first proposed to effectively solve the non-convex TCTB maximization problem with guaranteed convergence. In order to reduce the computational complexity and facilitate lightweight online implementation of the optimization algorithm, we further construct two deep learning architectures. The first one takes channel state information (CSI) as input, while the second one exploits the UEs’ locations only for online inference. The two data-driven approaches are trained using data samples generated by the BCD algorithm via supervised learning. Our simulation results reveal a close match between the performance of the optimization-based BCD algorithm and the low-complexity learning-based architectures, all with superior performance to existing schemes in both cases with perfect and imperfect input features. Importantly, the location-only deep learning method is shown to offer a particularly practical and robust solution alleviating the need for CSI estimation and feedback when line-of-sight (LoS) direct links exist between UEs and the AP. This paper considers an angle-domain intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) system. We derive maximum likelihood (ML) estimators for the effective angles from the base station (BS) to the user and the effective angles of propagation from the IRS to the user. It is demonstrated that the accuracy of the estimated angles improves with the number of BS antennas. Also, deploying the IRS closer to the BS increases the accuracy of the estimated angle from the IRS to the user. Then, based on the estimated angles, we propose a joint optimization of BS beamforming and IRS beamforming, which achieves similar performance to two benchmark algorithms based on full CSI and the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method respectively. Simulation results show that the optimized BS beam becomes more focused towards the IRS direction as the number of reflecting elements increases. Furthermore, we derive a closed-form approximation, upper bound and lower bound for the achievable rate. The analytical findings indicate that the achievable rate can be improved by increasing the number of BS antennas or reflecting elements. Specifically, the BS-user link and the BS-IRS-user link can obtain power gains of order N and NM2, respectively, where N is the antenna number and M is the number of reflecting elements. Content caching is recognized as a promising solution to release the heavy burden of backhaul links and decrease the content transmission latency in Fog radio access networks (Fog-RANs). However, the content caching design is still a challenging problem with considering the user request patterns, the content delivery strategies, and the limited caching capacity. Recommendation has the capability of reshaping users’ content requests for further prompting caching gain. The joint recommendation, caching, beamforming holds the potential to improve the system performance of Fog-RANs. In this paper, a joint recommendation, caching, and beamforming scheme is proposed for multi-cell multi-antenna recommendation aware Fog-RANs. Aiming at minimizing the content transmission latency, we formulate a joint recommendation, caching, and beamforming optimization problem. The minimization problem is a very challenging two-timescale mixed integer nonlinear programming problem, which is hard to solve in general. By exploring structural properties of the problem, we propose an alternative optimization algorithm with low complexity through decomposing the original problem into three sub-problems. This paper proposes a joint iterative optimization based hybrid beamforming technique for massive MU-MIMO systems. The proposed technique jointly and iteratively optimizes the transmitter precoders and combiners, aiming to approach the global optimum solution for the system sum-rate maximization problem. The proposed technique develops an adaptive algorithm exploiting the stochastic gradients (SG) of the local beamformers and provides low-complexity closed-form solutions. Furthermore, an efficient adaptive scheme is developed based on the proposed adaptive algorithm and the closed-form solutions. The proposed algorithm requires the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) feedback from each user and a limited size transition vector to be exchanged between the transmitter and receivers at each step to update beamformers locally. Analytic result shows that the proposed adaptive algorithm achieves low-complexity when the array size is large and is able to converge within a small number of iterations. Simulation result shows that the proposed technique is able to achieve superior performance comparing to the existing state-of-art techniques. In addition, the knowledge of instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is not required as the channels are also adaptively estimated with each coherence time which is a practical assumption since the CSI is usually unavailable or have time-varying nature in real-time applications. In this paper, we focus on intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-antenna communications with transceiver hardware impairments encountered in practice. In particular, we aim to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) taking into account the impact of hardware impairments, where the source transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming are jointly designed under the proposed optimization framework. To circumvent the non-convexity of the formulated design problem, we first derive a closed-form optimal solution to the source transmit beamforming. Then, for the optimization of IRS reflect beamforming, we obtain an upper bound to the optimal objective value via solving a single convex problem. A low-complexity minorization-maximization (MM) algorithm was developed to approach the upper bound. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed beamforming design is more robust to the hardware impairments than that of the conventional SNR maximized scheme. Moreover, compared to the scenario without deploying an IRS, the performance gain brought by incorporating the hardware impairments is more evident for the IRS-aided communications. Cognitive radio (CR) is an effective solution to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of wireless communications by allowing the secondary users (SUs) to share spectrum with primary users (PUs). Meanwhile, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), also known as reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), has been recently proposed as a promising approach to enhance energy efficiency (EE) of wireless communication systems through intelligently reconfiguring the channel environment. To improve both SE and EE, in this paper, we introduce multiple IRSs to a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) CR system, in which a single SU coexists with a primary network with multiple PU receivers (PU-RXs). Our design objective is to maximize the achievable rate of SU subject to a total transmit power constraint on the SU transmitter (SU-TX) and interference temperature constraints on the PU-RXs, by jointly optimizing the beamforming at SU-TX and the reflecting coefficients at each IRS. Both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) cases are considered in the optimization. This paper investigates the impact of a uniform circular array (UCA) in the context of wireless security via exposure region-based beamforming. An improvement is demonstrated for the security metric proposed in our previous paper, namely, the spatial secrecy outage probability (SSOP), by optimizing the configuration of the UCA. Our previous paper focused on formalizing the SSOP concept and exploring its applicability using a uniform linear array example. This paper proposes the UCA as a superior candidate because it is more robust against the effects of mutual coupling. The UCA’s SSOP configuration is explored and a special expression is derived from the general expression for the first time, and a closed-form upper bound is then generated to facilitate analysis. By carefully designing the UCA structure particularly the radius, an SSOP optimization algorithm is derived and explored for mutual coupling. This paper studies robust energy optimization for the cloud radio access network (C-RAN). The objective of this paper is to jointly minimize network power consumption through optimizing the base station (BS) mode, multi-user (MU)-BS association, and beamforming vectors given imperfect channel state information (CSI). To solve this non-trivial problem, we first transform the problem to a semi-definite programming (SDP) one using the S-lemma with the aid of the semi-definite relaxation technique, and then propose a SDP-based group sparse beamforming approach to solve it iteratively. Since the computational complexity of solving SDP problems is intractable, we propose to translate the uncertainty in the CSI to the uncertainty in its covariance matrix, and then recast the original problem as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming problem. We further propose a two-stage rank selection framework to determine the BS mode and MU-BS association separately and successively. Simulation results demonstrate the convergence of our proposed algorithms, and validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in minimizing the network power consumption of the C-RAN. In this paper, we investigate the two-way communication between two users assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). The scheme that two users communicate simultaneously over Rayleigh fading channels is considered. The channels between the two users and RIS can either be reciprocal or non-reciprocal. For reciprocal channels, we determine the optimal phases at the RIS to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). We then derive exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability and spectral efficiency for single-element RIS. By capitalizing the insights obtained from the single-element analysis, we introduce a gamma approximation to model the product of Rayleigh random variables which is useful for the evaluation of the performance metrics in multiple-element RIS. Asymptotic analysis shows that the outage decreases at $\left ({\log (\rho)/\rho }\right)^{L}$ rate where $L$ is the number of elements, whereas the spectral efficiency increases at $\log (\rho)$ rate at large average SINR $\rho $. For non-reciprocal channels, the minimum user SINR is targeted to be maximized. For single-element RIS, closed-form solution is derived whereas for multiple-element RIS the problem turns out to be non-convex. The latter one is solved through semidefinite programming relaxation and a proposed greedy-iterative method, which can achieve higher performance and lower computational complexity, respectively. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) that enables the control of wireless propagation environment has recently emerged as a promising cost-effective technology for boosting the spectral and energy efficiency of future wireless communication systems. Prior works on IRS are mainly based on the ideal phase shift model assuming full signal reflection by each of its elements regardless of the phase shift, which, however, is practically difficult to realize. In contrast, we propose in this paper a practical phase shift model that captures the phase-dependent amplitude variation in the element-wise reflection design. Based on the proposed model and considering an IRS-aided multiuser system with one IRS deployed to assist in the downlink communications from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to multiple single-antenna users, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the total transmit power at the AP by jointly designing the AP transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming, subject to the users’ individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. Iterative algorithms are proposed to find suboptimal solutions to this problem efficiently by utilizing the alternating optimization (AO) as well as penalty-based optimization techniques. Moreover, to draw essential insight, we analyze the asymptotic performance loss of the IRS-aided system that employs practical phase shifters but assumes the ideal phase shift model for beamforming optimization, as the number of IRS elements goes to infinity. Simulation results unveil substantial performance gains achieved by the proposed beamforming optimization based on the practical phase shift model as compared to the conventional ideal model.
