Hybrid analog and digital beamforming (HBF) has recently emerged as an attractive technique for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. It well balances the demand for sufficient beamforming gains to overcome the propagation loss and the desire to reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. In this paper, the mean square error (MSE) is chosen as the performance metric to characterize the transmission reliability. Using the minimum sum-MSE criterion, we investigate the HBF design for broadband mmWave transmissions. To overcome the difficulty of solving the multi-variable design problem, the alternating minimization method is adopted to optimize the hybrid transmit and receive beamformers alternatively. Specifically, a manifold optimization-based HBF algorithm is first proposed, which directly handles the constant modulus constraint of the analog component. Its convergence is then proved. To reduce the computational complexity, we then propose a low-complexity general eigenvalue decomposition-based HBF algorithm in the narrowband scenario and three algorithms via the eigenvalue decomposition and orthogonal matching pursuit methods in the broadband scenario. A particular innovation in our proposed alternating minimization algorithms is a carefully designed initialization method, which leads to a faster convergence. Furthermore, we extend the sum-MSE-based design to that with weighted sum-MSE, which is then connected to the spectral efficiency-based design. In this paper, we aim to obtain the optimal tradeoff between the average delay and the average power consumption in a communication system. In our system, the arrivals occur at each timeslot according to a Bernoulli arrival process, and are buffered at the transmitter waiting to be scheduled. We consider a finite buffer and allow the scheduling decision to depend on the buffer occupancy. In order to capture the realism in communication systems, the transmission power is assumed to be an increasing and convex function of the number of packets transmitted in each timeslot. This problem is modeled as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP). We first prove that the optimal policy of the Lagrangian relaxation of the CMDP is deterministic and threshold-based. We then show that the optimal delay-power tradeoff curve is convex and piecewise linear, and the optimal policies of the original problem are also threshold-based. Based on the results, we propose an algorithm to obtain the optimal policy and the optimal tradeoff curve. We also show that the proposed algorithm is much more efficient than using general methods. For coherent detection, block-coded modulation is a bandwidth efficient scheme. In this paper, we propose theorems about the error performance of block-coded modulation using Mary phase-shift keying (MPSK) for noncoherent detection. Based on these theorems, we propose a novel block-coded modulation scheme for noncoherent detection called noncoherent block-coded MPSK. The proposed scheme provides flexible designs of noncoherent block codes with different code rate, block length and error performance. Good noncoherent block codes can be easily obtained by properly choosing binary linear block codes as the component codes. Moreover, noncoherent block codes of this new scheme can be decoded by multistage decoding, which has the advantage of low complexity and satisfactory error performance. In this paper, two algorithms of multistage decoding for noncoherent detection are proposed as welt. Multiple-access interference is one of the major impediments in the reverse link of code-division multiple-access (COMA) systems, due to the synergy of the users' spreading codes, transmission delays, and the channel characteristics. A space-time dynamic signature-assignment (DSA) algorithm was briefly described by the authors in a previous paper. In this paper, we further elaborate on the space-time DSA approach and its receiver structure for the reverse link of direct-sequence (DS)-CDMA systems using multiple antennas at the receiver. The space-time DSA dynamically assigns the users' spreading codes and transmission delays, i.e., to assign the user signatures, in order to minimize mutual crosscorrelations. In assigning the signatures, the USA adopts a low-complexity iterative algorithm which utilizes channel information and aims to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of the poorest performing user at the base station. We develop several novel signal detection algorithms for two-dimensional intersymbol-interference channels. The contribution of the paper is two-fold: (1) We extend the one-dimensional maximum a-posteriori (MAP) detection algorithm to operate over multiple rows and columns in an iterative manner. We study the performance vs. complexity trade-offs for various algorithmic options ranging from single row/column non-iterative detection to a multi-row/column iterative scheme and analyze the performance of the algorithm. (2) We develop a self-iterating 2-D linear minimum mean-squared based equalizer by extending the 1-D linear equalizer framework, and present an analysis of the algorithm. The iterative multi-row/column detector and the self-iterating equalizer are further connected together within a turbo framework. We analyze the combined 2-D iterative equalization and detection engine through analysis and simulations. The performance of the overall equalizer and detector is near MAP estimate with tractable complexity, and beats the Marrow Wolf detector by about at least 0.8 dB over certain 2-D ISI channels. This paper is concerned with the blind identification of passband and baseband Hammerstein channels using cumulants of the received sequence. The channel is excited by common communication signals such as QAM, PSK and OFDM; sparseness of the higher order cumulant lags is exploited. This paper explores the use of kurtosis in synchronizing with a QPSK burst transmission. The start and end of the burst are a priori unknown and are detected without the use of pilot signals. After frame level synchronization, signal level synchronization is performed. The symbol timing, carrier frequency and carrier phase are recovered without the assistance of known symbols or synchronization words in the data stream, i.e. totally blind synchronization. This paper generalizes the information-theoretic optimality of minimum mean square error successive interference cancellation in layered space-time coding with rate and power control. Based on this derivation, a new concept relying on partial feedback is introduced, whose core idea is to exploit an additional degree of freedom relative to the partitioning of transmit antennas. Taking into account this additional degree of freedom, together with power control and decoding order, allows the reduction of the quantization noise induced by the user of finite discrete-rate sets at the transmitter. However, the simultaneous optimization of all those degrees of freedom proves to be computationally intensive and would result in a tremendous feedback load. Practical algorithms are thus proposed to achieve this optimization with a reasonable complexity and a limited amount feedback. This paper is concerned with timing recovery for ultra-wideband communication systems operating in a dense multipath environment. Two timing algorithms are proposed that exploit the samples of the received signal to estimate the start of the individual frames with respect to the receiver's clock (frame timing) and the location of the first frame in each symbol (symbol timing). Channel estimation comes out as a by-product and can be used for coherent matched filter detection. The proposed algorithms require sampling rates on the order of the inverse of the pulse duration. Their performance is assessed by simulating the operation of coherent and differential detectors. This paper presents a reduced-complexity soft-input soft-output detection scheme, called iterative tree search detection for multiple-input multiple-output wireless communication systems employing turbo processing at the receiver. In this scheme, a reduced search space is selected with the aid of the M-algorithm, and QAM signal constellations with block partitionable labels are independent of the modulation order, as well as asymptotically linear in the number of transmit antennas. In this paper, based on the application of the sum-product (SP) algorithm to factor graphs (FGs) representing the joint a posteriori probability (APP) of the transmitted symbols, we propose new iterative soft-input soft-output (SISO) detection schemes for intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. We have verified by computer simulations that the SP algorithm converges to a good approximation of the exact marginal APPs of the transmitted symbols if the FG has girth at least 6. For ISI channels whose corresponding FG has girth 4, the application of a stretching technique allows us to obtain an equivalent girth-6 graph. For sparse 151 channels, the proposed algorithms have advantages in terms of complexity over optimal detection schemes based on the Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv (BCJR) algorithm. They also allow a parallel implementation of the receiver and the possibility of a more efficient complexity reduction. The application to joint detection and decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is also considered and results are shown for some partial-response magnetic channels. Also in these cases, we show that the proposed algorithms have a limited performance loss with respect to that can be obtained when the optimal "serial" BCJR algorithm is used for detection. Therefore, for their parallel implementation, they represent a favorable alternative to the modified "parallel" BCJR algorithm proposed in the literature for the application to magnetic channels. An unbiased, maximum-likelihood (ML), channel parameter-estimation algorithm for direct-sequence spread-spectrum systems with strong interference is discussed in this paper. The algorithm includes correcting terms to the extended Kalman filter (EKF) based on the gradient of the negative log-likelihood function of the Output of a conventional matched filter. By an asymptotic analysis, the algorithm is shown to determine the actual parameters. A complete implementation of the algorithm is given, and its transient behavior is examined by computer simulations. In this paper, a novel feedback frequency synchronizer for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing signals transmitted over multiparty fading channels is described. Its derivation is based on maximum-likelihood estimation techniques and assumes an approximate statistical knowledge of the communication channel. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed by computer simulation, and is compared with that provided by other synchronization algorithms and with Cramer-Rao bounds. This paper proposes a new method for contention resolution in random-access wireless networks. Using orthogonal complementary codes to design access-request packets, users can reserve channel access successfully, even in severe contentions. Collisions among access-request packets can be resolved and exploited, whereas collisions among data packets are avoided. System throughput and delay performance can be enhanced, because random-access contention becomes transparent. Specifically, system throughput approaches the offered load up to the maximum value one with improved average packet delay performance. A joint layer design approach is proposed with both the physical layer signal-detection algorithm and the medium access-control layer random-access protocol.
