This paper proposes multilevel Reed–Solomon (MRS) codes and their iterative multistage soft decoding (IMSD) for visible light communication (VLC), realizing both high decoding performance and transmission spectrum efficiency. The proposed IMSD algorithm decodes the MRS codes level-by-level through iterating either hard decisions or extrinsic information of RS coded bits. Each level RS decoding is realized by cascading the adaptive belief propagation (ABP) algorithm that produces the extrinsic information and the Berlekamp–Massey (BM) algorithm that estimates the codeword. The earlier level decoding provides better a priori information for the later ones. A complexity reducing IMSD (CR-IMSD) algorithm is also proposed to facilitate the decoding. This paper further investigates a joint design of color-shift keying (CSK) constellation and the MRS code, optimizing the decoding performance. The CSK constellation is designed by considering both the set partitioning (SP) criterion and the harmonic mean of constellation’s minimum squared Euclidean distance (MSED). The MRS codes are further designed using the capacity and the equal error probability rules. Our simulation results show that the IMSD algorithm achieves significant iterative decoding gains. The construction of a quasi-cyclic low density parity-check (QC-LDPC) matrix is usually carried out in two steps. In the first step, a prototype matrix is defined according to certain criteria (size, girth, check and variable node degrees, and so on). The second step involves the expansion of the prototype matrix. During this last phase, an integer value is assigned to each non-null position in the prototype matrix corresponding to the right-rotation of the identity matrix. The problem of determining these integer values is complex. The state-of-the-art solutions use either some mathematical constructions to guarantee a given girth of the final QC-LDPC code, or a random search of values until the target girth is satisfied. In this paper, we propose an alternative/complementary method that reduces the search space by defining large equivalence classes of topologically identical matrices through row and column permutations using additive, structural, and multiplicative transformations. Selecting only a single element per equivalence class can reduce the search space by a few orders of magnitude. Then, we use the formalism of constraint programming to list the exhaustive sets of solutions for a given girth and a given expansion factor. This paper introduces a high rate error-correcting coding scheme called symmetric block-wise concatenated Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (symmetric BC-BCH) codes tailored for storage devices with hard-decision outputs, e.g., storage devices based on NAND flash memory. It will be shown that a careful integration of the symmetry and 2-D block-wise concatenation is especially beneficial to achieve improvements of error-rate performance when an iterative hard-decision-based decoding (IHDD) is assumed. The claim is substantiated by proving that the proposed symmetric concatenation is optimal in terms of error-rate performance in the low error-rate regime over other 2-D block-wise concatenations. Besides, this paper proposes a novel way to design constituent codes, which enables us to enjoy advantages of primitive BCH codes and to efficiently break stopping sets associated with the IHDD in the low error-rate regime. We consider error-control systems made up of a symmetric BC-BCH code, the IHDD, and simple auxiliary decoders specifically targeting to break stopping sets caused in the IHDD. It will be shown that the auxiliary decoders significantly improve error-rate performance at a negligible amount of extra complexity. Performance comparisons are also carried out between error-control systems with the proposed and other coding schemes such as BCH codes, quasi-primitive BC-BCH codes, and low-density parity-check codes. Multipartite secret sharing is an important research object in the area of secret sharing schemes. Compartmented access structures are an interesting class of multipartite access structures. The constructions of ideal linear schemes realizing compartmented access structures are studied by codes in this paper. We find that compartmented secret sharing is related to a class of codes called locally repairable codes which are being used widely in distributed and cloud storage systems. We study secret sharing schemes for compartmented access structures with upper bounds, compartmented access structures with lowers bounds and compartmented access structures with upper and lower bounds. We establish the relationships between secret sharing schemes for these compartmented access structures and locally repairable codes. Based on the relationships and some locally repairable codes, we obtain ideal linear schemes realizing these compartmented access structures by efficient methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compute-and-forward (CAF) relaying is an effective way to increase bandwidth efficiency of wireless two-way relay channels. Design of error-correcting codes and their decoding algorithms suitable for CAF relaying schemes remains an important issue to be studied. In this paper, we will analyze an asymptotic behavior of LDPC codes over two-way relay channels based on density evolution (DE). Because of the asymmetric characteristics of the channel, we use the population dynamics DE combined with DE formulas for asymmetric channels to obtain the belief propagation (BP) thresholds. Additionally, we also evaluate the asymptotic performance of spatially coupled LDPC codes for two-way relay channels. The performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) is known to be limited by the presence of certain sub-graphs that exist in the Tanner graph representation of the code, for example trapping sets and absorbing sets. This paper derives a lower bound on the frame error rate (FER) of any LDPC code containing a given problematic sub-graph, assuming a particular message passing decoder and decoder quantization. A crucial aspect of the lower bound is that it is code-independent, in the sense that it can be derived based only on a problematic sub-graph and then applied to any code containing it. Due to the complexity of evaluating the exact bound, assumptions are proposed to approximate it, from which we can estimate decoder performance. Simulated results obtained for both the quantized sum-product algorithm (SPA) and the quantized min-sum algorithm (MSA) are shown to be consistent with the approximate bound and the corresponding performance estimates. In the conventional index coding problem, the messages transmitted by the source to satisfy the demands of the receivers are error-free. However, in practice, the messages may be error prone which led to the introduction of error-correcting index codes. An error-correcting index code is an encoding scheme which enables every receiver to decode its demanded message even in the presence of certain number of transmission errors. Formally, an index code capable of correcting at most $\delta $ errors at all its receivers is defined as a $\delta $ -error-correcting index code. In this paper, we explore the connections between vector linear error-correcting index codes and discrete polymatroids. This is motivated from the connections between linear network error-correcting codes and matroids. It is shown that a vector linear error-correcting index code exists if and only if there exists a representable discrete polymatroid satisfying certain conditions. Differential error-correcting index codes which allow different receivers to have different error-correcting capabilities are also studied. The rank-modulation scheme has been recently proposed to write and store data in flash memories efficiently. In this paper, a new construction of systematic error-correcting codes for permutations is presented under the Chebyshev distance. By constructing a subgroup code and using its coset codes to partition the set of information permutations, the proposed code construction can achieve much larger code cardinality and hence higher code rates. To facilitate the encoding and decoding of the constructed codes, we also investigate the concepts of ranking and unranking for permutations, and generalize them to $M$ -ranking and $M$ -unranking for multi-permutations. Spatially coupled turbo-like codes (SC-TCs) have been shown to have excellent decoding thresholds due to the threshold saturation effect. Furthermore, even for moderate block lengths, the simulation results demonstrate a very good bit error rate performance in the waterfall region. In this paper, we discuss the effect of spatial coupling on the performance of TCs in the finite block-length regime. We investigate the effect of coupling on the error floor performance of SC-TCs by establishing conditions under which the spatial coupling either preserves or improves the minimum distance of TCs. This allows us to investigate the error floor performance of SC-TCs by performing a weight enumerator function analysis of the corresponding uncoupled ensembles. Our results demonstrate that the spatial coupling changes the design trade-off between the waterfall and error floor performance. Instead of optimizing the belief propagation (BP) threshold of uncoupled TCs, which in turn leads to a higher error floor, we can take advantage of the threshold saturation property of the SC-TCs. Choosing strong ensembles, characterized by good maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) thresholds and low error floors, the corresponding SC-TCs are then able to simultaneously approach capacity and achieve very low error floor. The interest in polar codes has been increasing significantly since their adoption for use in the 5th generation wireless systems standard. Successive cancellation (SC) decoding algorithm has low implementation complexity, but yields mediocre error-correction performance at the code lengths of interest. SC-Flip algorithm improves the error-correction performance of SC by identifying possibly erroneous decisions made by SC and re-iterates after flipping one bit. It was recently shown that only a portion of bit-channels are most likely to be in error. In this paper, we investigate the average log-likelihood ratio (LLR) values and their distribution related to the erroneous bit-channels, and develop the Thresholded SC-Flip (TSCF) decoding algorithm. We also replace the LLR selection and sorting of SC-Flip with a comparator to reduce the implementation complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that for practical code lengths and a wide range of rates, TSCF shows negligible loss compared with the error-correction performance obtained when all single-errors are corrected. At matching maximum iterations, TSCF has an error-correction performance gain of up to 0.45 dB compared with SC-Flip decoding. At matching error-correction performance, the computational complexity of TSCF is reduced by up to 40% on average and requires up to $5\times $ lower maximum number of iterations. This paper proposes a soft input decoding algorithm and a decoder architecture for generalized concatenated (GC) codes. The GC codes are constructed from inner nested binary Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes and outer Reed–Solomon codes. In order to enable soft input decoding for the inner BCH block codes, a sequential stack decoding algorithm is used. Ordinary stack decoding of binary block codes requires the complete trellis of the code. In this paper, a representation of the block codes based on the trellises of supercodes is proposed in order to reduce the memory requirements for the representation of the BCH codes. This enables an efficient hardware implementation. The results for the decoding performance of the overall GC code are presented. Furthermore, a hardware architecture of the GC decoder is proposed. The informed dynamic scheduling (IDS) strategy decoding algorithms performed exceptionally well for low-density parity-check codes in terms of the error-rate performance. However, the IDS decoding algorithm is greedy because of the unfair computation resources allocation among different variables nodes, which leads to poor convergence performance. In order to reduce the greediness of the IDS algorithm, the tabu search (TS) algorithm is introduced to the dynamic scheduling-based decoding in this paper. In the TS-based dynamic scheduling (TSDS) algorithm, the variable nodes in the Tanner graph are temporarily stored in a tabu list. In the decoding process with the TSDS algorithm, variable nodes stored in the tabu list will not be selected and updated until they are shifted out of the tabu list. Besides, an improved updating order is provided for the TSDS algorithm, by which the computational complexity can be decreased without the loss of error correction performance. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other decoding algorithms of interest in terms of bit error rate and convergence performance over the additive white Gaussian noise channel. Spatial diversity is an effective method to mitigate the effects of fading, and when used in conjunction with low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, it can achieve excellent error-correcting performance. Noise added at each branch of the diversity combiner is generally assumed to be additive white Gaussian noise, but there are many applications where the received signal is impaired by noise with a non-Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we derive the exact bit-error probability of different linear combining techniques on Rayleigh fading channels with impulsive noise, which is modeled using symmetric alpha-stable distributions. The relationship for the signal-to-noise ratios of these linear combiners is derived and then different non-linear detectors are presented. A detector based on the bi-parameter Cauchy–Gaussian mixture model is used and shows near-optimal performance with a significant reduction in complexity when compared with the optimal detector. Furthermore, the threshold signal-to-noise ratio of LDPC codes for different combining techniques on these channels is derived using density evolution and an estimation of the waterfall performance of LDPC codes is derived that reduces the gap between simulated and asymptotic performance. Recent studies on noisy decoding for LDPC codes rely on the assumption that the noise in each component is independent and perpetual. This paper examines a noisy decoding model that generalizes this approach: the noise is due to multi-state channels, where the channel states are governed by queue-like processes. This model is inspired by errors in decoders that are due to the high levels of radiation. This is an important problem, as modern non-volatile memories (NVMs) must perform well in high-radiation environments if they are to be used for deep space applications. High levels of radiation have a significant impact on floating gate-based NVMs, such as flash, and therefore, require well-tuned, powerful error-correcting codes for reliable data storage along with the decoders capable of handling radiation-induced noisy components. We introduce a noisy LDPC decoding model subsuming certain previously studied models. This model is better suited to represent transient errors—in both variable nodes and check nodes—and allows for a more refined analysis compared with older, coarser models. We perform a density evolution-like theoretical evaluation, applicable to both regular and irregular codes, optimize the voting threshold for a Gallager B/E-decoder, and analyze the resulting evaluation. Due to process variation in nanoscale manufacturing, there may be permanently missing connections in information processing hardware. Due to timing errors in circuits, there may be missed messages in intra-chip communications, equivalent to transiently missing connections. In this paper, we investigate the performance of message-passing LDPC decoders in the presence of missing connections. We prove concentration and convergence theorems that validate the use of density evolution performance analysis. Arbitrarily small error probability is not possible with missing connections, but we find suitably defined decoding thresholds for communication systems with binary erasure channels under peeling decoding, as well as binary symmetric channels under Gallager A and B decoding. We see that decoding is robust to missing wires, as decoding thresholds degrade smoothly. Moreover, there is a stochastic facilitation effect in Gallager B decoders with missing connections. We also conduct finite-length simulations, compare the decoding sensitivity to channel noise and to missing wiring, and perform preliminary error-tolerant manufacturing yield analysis. High-frame rate (HFR) video streaming is emerging as a new paradigm in popular multimedia applications (e.g., mobile cloud gaming) to achieve smooth viewing experience perceived by end users. However, it is severely challenging to guarantee the delivery quality of HFR video over wireless platforms with regard to the high transmission rate and limited network resources. Multihoming capability enables mobile devices to concurrently receive video data with different radio interfaces (e.g., cellular and Wi-Fi). To effectively deliver mobile HFR video over multiple wireless access networks, this paper develops an application-layer transmission scheme dubbed joint FRAme Scheduling and Error Resilience (FRASER). First, we propose an unequal frame scheduling approach by taking advantage of interlaced forward error correction coding and reliability-aware data allocation to minimize the total distortion. Second, we introduce an error resilience scheme at the receiver side to proactively leverage the out-of-order and overdue video packets to mitigate the error propagations. The proposed FRASER is able to substantially reduce the probability of I (Intra) frame loss and consecutive P (Predicted) frame drops. We conduct the performance evaluation through extensive emulations in Exata involving HFR video streaming encoded with H.264 codec. Evaluation results show that FRASER outperforms the reference transmission schemes in terms of video peak signal-to-noise ratio, end-to-end delay, and received frame rate. In this paper, we propose and analyze an unequal error protection (UEP) rateless spinal code, which can provide UEP and unequal recovery time properties. The proposed UEP spinal codes achieve UEP by the permutation of different priority levels and the setup of different segment sizes for different priority levels. In addition, an unequal length transmission scheme to improve the transmission rate is proposed, where the number of transmitted symbols in each pass varies. Moreover, we analyze the finite-length performance of the proposed UEP spinal code, which enables us to provide the upper bound of average error probability for each priority level under maximum likelihood decoding. Based on this finite-length result, we discuss the design of UEP spinal code, which is flexible and efficient. Furthermore, the asymptotic performance analysis shows that the proposed UEP spinal code with a practical decoder can achieve the capacities of both binary symmetric channel and additive white Gaussian noise channel. Low density lattice codes (LDLCs) are high-dimensional lattices with a sparse inverse generator matrix that can be decoded efficiently using iterative decoding. In the iterative LDLC decoder, the messages are Gaussian mixtures, and for any implementation, the Gaussian mixtures must be approximated. This paper describes a parametric LDLC decoding algorithm, where internally at the variable node, infinite Gaussian mixtures are approximated with three or two Gaussians, while the messages between nodes are single Gaussians. Strengths of the algorithm include its simplicity and suitability for analysis. Analysis is performed by evaluating the Kullback–Leibler divergence between the true messages and the three/two Gaussian approximation. The approximation using three or two Gaussians is more accurate than previously proposed approximations. Also, noise thresholds for the proposed LDLC decoder are presented, and the proposed decoder reduces the noise thresholds 0.05 dB compared with previous parametric decoders. The numerical results show that for $n=100$ and $n=1000$ , the two-Gaussian approximation is the same as the full-complexity decoder. Recent technological advancements in wireless infrastructures and handheld devices enable mobile users to concurrently receive multimedia contents with different radio interfaces (e.g., cellular and Wi-Fi). However, multipath video transport over the resource-limited and error-prone wireless networks is challenged with key technical issues: 1) conventional multipath protocols are throughput-oriented, and video data are scheduled in a content-agnostic fashion and 2) high-quality real-time video is bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive. To address these critical problems, this paper proposes a bandwidth-efficient multipath streaming (BEMA) protocol featured by the priority-aware data scheduling and forward error correction-based reliable transmission. First, we present a mathematical framework to formulate the delay-constrained distortion minimization problem for concurrent video transmission over multiple wireless access networks. Second, we develop a joint Raptor coding and data distribution framework to achieve target video quality with minimum bandwidth consumption. The proposed BEMA is able to effectively mitigate packet reordering and path asymmetry to improve network utilization. We conduct performance evaluation through extensive emulations in Exata involving real-time H.264 video streaming. Compared with the existing multipath protocols, BEMA achieves appreciable improvements in terms of video peak signal-to-noise ratio, end-to-end delay, bandwidth utilization, and goodput. This paper studies secure communication based on incremental redundancy (INR) secure hybrid automatic retransmission request (HARQ) protocol over block-fading wiretap channels. The transmitter has no instantaneous channel state information (CSI) available from either main channel or the eavesdropper channel, hence the coding rates cannot be adapted to instantaneous channel conditions. We investigate the outage performance for two schemes of INR secure HARQ protocols: case 1) when there exists two reliable multibit feedback channels from both legitimate receiver and eavesdropper to the transmitter carrying a function of outdated CSI, and case 2) when there is a multibit feedback channel only from legitimate receiver. In both cases, we demonstrate that using the information carried via multibit feedback channels, the transmitter can adapt the coding rates in order to achieve a better secrecy throughput using a smaller number of transmissions comparing to the ACK/NACK feedback channel model. For some parameters, our rate adaptation protocol achieves a strictly positive secrecy throughput whereas it is equal to zero for the protocol with ACK/NACK feedback. We show that for some set of parameters, the loss of secrecy throughput between case 1 and case 2 is very small compared to the gain provided by both protocols. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Message-passing decoders typically perform well for nonbinary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) codes with large computational complexity. As another type of simplified decoders, symbol-reliability-based decoders further reduce the computational complexity. However, the previously proposed algorithms suffer severe error performance degradation for NB-LDPC codes with low column weights. In this paper, a weighted bit-reliability based (wBRB) decoder for NB-LDPC codes is developed and implemented with efficient layered partial-parallel structure. It not only balances the tradeoff between complexity and error performance, but also reduces the memory usage significantly. Furthermore, to enhance the performance of the wBRB decoder, a full bit-reliability-based (FBRB) decoder is proposed. The FBRB decoder is derived based on the binary matrix representation of the nonzero entries in the parity-check matrix. Since more bit-reliability values are passed through the edges of the Tanner graph, the FBRB decoder can achieve better error performance and faster convergence rate than the wBRB decoder. Both of the decoders are implemented on a Xilinx Virtex-5 XC5VLX155T FPGA device for a (403,226) code over GF($2^5$). This paper proposes a novel alternative to the Logarithmic Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv (Log-BCJR) algorithm for turbo decoding, yielding significantly improved processing throughput and latency. While the Log-BCJR processes turbo-encoded bits in a serial forwards-backwards manner, the proposed algorithm operates in a fully-parallel manner, processing all bits in both components of the turbo code at the same time. The proposed algorithm is compatible with all turbo codes, including those of the LTE and WiMAX standards. These standardized codes employ odd-even interleavers, facilitating a novel technique for reducing the complexity of the proposed algorithm by 50%. More specifically, odd-even interleavers allow the proposed algorithm to alternate between processing the odd-indexed bits of the first component code at the same time as the even-indexed bits of the second component, and vice-versa. Furthermore, the proposed fully-parallel algorithm is shown to converge to the same error correction performance as the state-of-the-art turbo decoding algorithm. Owing to its significantly increased parallelism, the proposed algorithm facilitates throughputs and latencies that are up to 6.86 times superior to those of the state-of-the art algorithm, when employed for the LTE and WiMAX turbo codes.
