This paper studies an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless powered IoT network, where a rotary-wing UAV adopts fly-hover-communicate protocol to successively visit IoT devices in demand. During the hovering periods, the UAV works on full-duplex mode to simultaneously collect data from the target device and charge other devices within its coverage. Practical propulsion power consumption model and non-linear energy harvesting model are taken into account. We formulate a multi-objective optimization problem to jointly optimize three objectives: maximization of sum data rate, maximization of total harvested energy and minimization of UAV’s energy consumption over a particular mission period. These three objectives are in conflict with each other partly and weight parameters are given to describe associated importance. Since IoT devices keep gathering information from the physical surrounding environment and their requirements to upload data change dynamically, online path planning of the UAV is required. In this paper, we apply deep reinforcement learning algorithm to achieve online decision. An extended deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is proposed to learn control policies of UAV over multiple objectives. While training, the agent learns to produce optimal policies under given weights conditions on the basis of achieving timely data collection according to the requirement priority and avoiding devices’ data overflow. The verification results show that the proposed MODDPG (multi-objective DDPG) algorithm achieves joint optimization of three objectives and optimal policies can be adjusted according to weight parameters among optimization objectives. In this paper, we leverage reinforcement learning (RL) and cross-layer network coding (CLNC) for efficiently pre-fetching requested contents to the local caches and delivering these contents to requesting users in a downlink fog-radio access network (F-RAN) with device-to-device (D2D) communications. In the considered system, fog access points (F-APs) and cache-enabled D2D (CE-D2D) users are equipped with local caches that alleviate traffic burden at the fronthaul and facilitate rapid delivery of the users’ contents. To this end, the CLNC scheme optimizes the coding decisions, transmission rates, and power levels of both F-APs and CE-D2D users, and RL scheme optimizes caching strategy. A joint content placement and delivery problem is formulated as an optimization problem with a goal to maximize system sum-rate. The problem is an NP-hard problem. To efficiently solve it, we first develop an innovative decentralized CLNC coalition formation (CLNC-CF) switch algorithm to obtain a stable solution for the content delivery problem, where F-APs and CE-D2D users utilize CLNC resource allocation. By considering statistics of channel and users’ content request into account, we then develop a multi-agent RL algorithm for optimizing the content placement at both F-APs and CE-D2D users. Simulation results show that the proposed joint CLNC-CF-RL framework can effectively improve the sum-rate by up to 30%, 60%, and 150%, respectively, compared to: 1) an optimal uncoded algorithm, 2) a standard rate-aware-NC algorithm, and 3) a benchmark classical NC with network-layer optimization. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have unlocked numerous sensing applications, which are expected to add billions of dollars to the world economy in the next decade. To further improve the Quality-of-Service in these applications, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project has considered the use of terrestrial cellular networks to support UAV sensing services, also known as the cellular Internet of UAVs. In this paper, we consider a cellular Internet of UAVs, where the sensory data can be transmitted either to the base station via cellular links, or to the mobile devices by underlay UAV-to-Device (U2D) communications. To evaluate the freshness of the sensory data, the concept of age of information (AoI) is adopted, in which a lower AoI implies fresher data. Since UAVs’ AoIs are determined by their trajectories during sensing and transmission, we investigate the AoI minimization problem for UAVs by designing their trajectories. This problem is a Markov decision problem with an infinite state-action space, and thus we utilize multi-agent deep reinforcement learning to approximate the state-action space. Then, we propose a multi-UAV trajectory design algorithm to solve this problem. Mobile edge computing (MEC) raises the issue of resisting selfish edge attackers that use less computation resources than promised to process offloading tasks or provide faked computation results. In this paper, we present a blockchain based trust mechanism to help MEC address selfish edge attacks and faked service record attacks. This mechanism evaluates the computational performance of the edge devices and broadcasts such information to the neighboring edge devices and mobile devices. By building a reputation assignment method for the edge devices, the edge reputation system chooses the miner of the blockchain, which applies the joint Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake consensus protocol to append a block recording the new service reputations onto the MEC blockchain. We propose a reinforcement learning (RL) based edge central processing unit (CPU) allocation algorithm without knowing the mobile service generation model and the network model in the dynamic edge computing process and a deep RL version to further improve the computational performance. The security performance is analyzed and the performance bound of the edge utility is provided. In this paper, we study a real-time monitoring system in which multiple source nodes are responsible for sending update packets to a common destination node in order to maintain the freshness of information at the destination. Since it may not always be feasible to replace or recharge batteries in all source nodes, we consider that the nodes are powered through wireless energy transfer (WET) by the destination. For this system setup, we investigate the optimal online sampling policy (referred to as the age-optimal policy) that jointly optimizes WET and scheduling of update packet transmissions with the objective of minimizing the long-term average weighted sum of Age of Information (AoI) values for different physical processes (observed by the source nodes) at the destination node, referred to as the sum-AoI. To solve this optimization problem, we first model this setup as an average cost Markov decision process (MDP) with finite state and action spaces. Due to the extreme curse of dimensionality in the state space of the formulated MDP, classical reinforcement learning algorithms are no longer applicable to our problem even for reasonable-scale settings. Motivated by this, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm that can learn the age-optimal policy in a computationally-efficient manner. We further characterize the structural properties of the age-optimal policy analytically, and demonstrate that it has a threshold-based structure with respect to the AoI values for different processes. We extend our analysis to characterize the structural properties of the policy that maximizes average throughput for our system setup, referred to as the throughput-optimal policy. Afterwards, we analytically demonstrate that the structures of the age-optimal and throughput-optimal policies are different. In the current unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) for sensing services, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) transmit their sensory data to terrestrial mobile devices over the unlicensed spectrum. However, the interference from surrounding terminals is uncontrollable due to the opportunistic channel access. In this paper, we consider a cellular Internet of UAVs to guarantee the Quality-of-Service (QoS), where the sensory data can be transmitted to the mobile devices either by UAV-to-Device (U2D) communications over cellular networks, or directly through the base station (BS). Since UAVs’ sensing and transmission may influence their trajectories, we study the trajectory design problem for UAVs in consideration of their sensing and transmission. This is a Markov decision problem (MDP) with a large state-action space, and thus, we utilize multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to approximate the state-action space, and then propose a multi-UAV trajectory design algorithm to solve this problem. The fifth generation of wireless communications (5G) promises massive increases in traffic volume and data rates, as well as improved reliability in voice calls. Jointly optimizing beamforming, power control, and interference coordination in a 5G wireless network to enhance the communication performance to end users poses a significant challenge. In this paper, we formulate the joint design of beamforming, power control, and interference coordination as a non-convex optimization problem to maximize the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and solve this problem using deep reinforcement learning. By using the greedy nature of deep Q-learning to estimate future rewards of actions and using the reported coordinates of the users served by the network, we propose an algorithm for voice bearers and data bearers in sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands, respectively. The algorithm improves the performance measured by SINR and sum-rate capacity. In realistic cellular environments, the simulation results show that our algorithm outperforms the link adaptation industry standards for sub-6 GHz voice bearers. For data bearers in the mmWave frequency band, our algorithm approaches the maximum sum rate capacity, but with less than 4% of the required run time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, a coded caching scheme has been verified to alleviate the load of networks efficiently. Recently, a new technique called placement delivery array (PDA) was proposed to characterize the coded caching scheme. In this paper, we consider a caching system in the scope of ultra dense networks (UDNs). Each base station (BS) has a finite cache and stores some contents. We propose an efficient coded content caching scheme called double coded caching to make the transmission robust to in-and-out wireless network quality. Then the dynamic caching and multicast scheduling are considered to jointly minimize the average delay and power of the content-centric wireless networks. This stochastic optimization problem can be formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP) with unknown transition probabilities and large state space. We propose a deep reinforcement learning approach to deal with the decision problem. Our algorithm uses a variational auto-encoder (VAE) neural network to approximate the state sufficiently, and uses a weighted double Q-learning scheme to reduce variance and overestimation of the Q function. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed double coded caching scheme increases the probability of the successful transmission, and the caching and scheduling policy can effectively reduce the delay and the power consumption.
