Multiphase (more than three-phase electric power) electric drive system is the focus of a significant research in the last decade. Multiphase power transmission system is also investigated in the literature because multiphase transformers are needed at the input of rectifiers. In the multiphase power transmission and multiphase rectifier systems, the number of phases investigated is a multiple of three. However, the variable speed multiphase drive system considered in the literature are mostly of five, seven, nine, eleven, twelve, and fifteen phases. Such multiphase drive systems are invariably supplied from power electronic converters. In contrast, this paper proposes technique to obtain seven-phase output from three-phase supply system using special and novel transformer connections. Thus, with the proposed technique, a pure seven-phase sine-wave voltage/current is obtained, which can be used for motor testing purposes. In addition, a seven-phase power transmission and rectifier system may benefit from the proposed connection scheme. Complete design and testing of the proposed solution is presented. This paper develops a coordination control strategy for wind farms with line commutated converter-based HVdc delivery for participating in inertial response and primary frequency control. The coordination philosophy is to feedback the grid frequency and its derivative and adjust the delivery power of the HVdc link according to the feedback signals. The feedback loop employing the derivative of the grid frequency aims to improve the inertial response while the feedback loop employing the grid frequency deviation introduces a droop at the rectifier control loop. When the grid frequency is too high or too low, active power flow through the HVdc link will be ramped down or up. In turn, the wind generation will increase or decrease the blade angles to reduce or increase the captured wind power through pitch control. A case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the inertial enhancement and frequency droop in HVdc control. Simulation results in transient security assessment tool are given. Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) still shares a large part in today's wind power market. It provides the benefits of variable speed operation cost-effectively, and can control its active and reactive power independently. Crowbar protection is often adopted to protect the rotor-side voltage source converter (VSC) from transient overcurrent during grid voltage dip. But under unbalanced grid voltage condition, the severe problems are not the transient overcurrent, but the electric torque pulsation and dc volt- age ripple in the back-to-back VSCs. This paper develops dynamic models in MATLAB/Simulink, validates it through experiments, investigates the behavior of DFIG during unbalanced grid voltage condition, and proposes new controllers in separated positive and negative sequence. Methods to separate positive and negative sequence components in real time are also developed, and their responses to unsymmetrical voltage dip are compared. Simulation results prove that the separated positive and negative sequence controllers limit the torque pulsation and dc voltage ripple effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-power synchronous motor drives are usually fed from naturally commutated cycloconverters. The output voltage of the cycloconverter contains interharmonics/subharmonics which affect the power quality and restrict the allowable frequency range. Further, a practical circulating current-free cycloconverter usually gives rise to stator current discontinuities The present paper deals with a simulation method to study the performance of a cycloconverter-fed synchronous motor drive in the presence of interharmonics/subharmonics taking into account the discontinuities in the output current as well as the effect of ripple in the output current on the input current of the cycloconverter. Interharmonics in output phase voltage, output phase current, input supply current, and the field current are estimated and verified with experimental results on a laboratory prototype. The significanct oscillating torque components due to these inter- harmonics are identified in a typical case. The simulation results are useful in power quality studies for such drives and in devising methods for suppression of these interharmonics/subharmonics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
