Face hallucination or super-resolution is a practical application of general image super-resolution which has been recently studied by many researchers. The challenge of good face hallucination comes from a variety of poses, illuminations, facial expressions, and other degradations. In many proposed methods, researchers resolve it by using a generative neural network to reduce the perceptual loss so we can generate a photo-realistic image. The problem is that researchers usually overlook the fidelity of the super-resolved image which could affect further facial image processing. Meanwhile, many CNN based approaches cascade multiple networks to extract facial prior information to improve super-resolution quality. Because of the end-to-end design, the details are missing for investigation. In this paper, we combine new techniques in convolutional neural network and random forests to a Hierarchical CNN based Random Forests (HCRF) approach for face super-resolution in a coarse-to-fine manner. In the proposed approach, we focus on a general approach that can handle facial images with various conditions without pre-processing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that combines the advantages of deep learning with random forests for face super-resolution. To achieve superior performance, we propose two novel CNN models for coarse facial image super-resolution and segmentation and then apply new random forests to target on local facial features refinement making use of the segmentation results. Extensive benchmark experiments on subjective and objective evaluation show that HCRF can achieve comparable speed and competitive performance compared with state-of-the-art super-resolution approaches for very low-resolution images. Deep generative models have proven to be effective priors for solving a variety of image processing problems. However, the learning of realistic image priors, based on a large number of parameters, requires a large amount of training data. It has been shown recently, with the so-called deep image prior (DIP), that randomly initialized neural networks can act as good image priors without learning. In this paper, we propose a deep generative model for light fields, which is compact and which does not require any training data other than the light field itself. To show the potential of the proposed generative model, we develop a complete light field compression scheme with quantization-aware learning and entropy coding of the quantized weights. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields very competitive results compared with state-of-the-art light field compression methods, both in terms of PSNR and MS-SSIM metrics. This paper aims at proposing a novel 2D non-linear phase decomposition of images, which performs the image processing tasks better than the traditional Fourier transformation (linear phase decomposition), but further, it has additional mathematical properties allowing more effective image analysis, including adaptive decomposition components and positive instantaneous phase derivatives. 1D unwinding Blaschke decomposition has recently been proposed and studied. Through factorization it expresses arbitrary 1D signal into an infinite linear combination of Blaschke products. It offers fast converging positive frequency decomposition in the form of rational approximation. However, in the multi-dimensional cases, the usual factorization mechanism does not work. As a consequence, there is no genuine unwinding decomposition for multi-dimensions. In this paper, a 2D partial unwinding decomposition based on algebraic transforms reducing multi-dimensions to the 1D case is proposed and analyzed. The result shows that the fast convergence offers efficient image reconstruction. The tensor type decomposing terms are mutually orthogonal, giving rise to 2D positive frequency decomposition. The comparison results show that the proposed method outperforms the standard greedy algorithm and the most commonly used methods in the Fourier category. Multi-view clustering aims at simultaneously obtaining a consensus underlying subspace across multiple views and conducting clustering on the learned consensus subspace, which has gained a variety of interest in image processing. In this paper, we propose the Semi-supervised Structured Subspace Learning algorithm for clustering data points from Multiple sources (SSSL-M). We explicitly extend the traditional multi-view clustering with a semi-supervised manner and then build an anti-block-diagonal indicator matrix with small amount of supervisory information to pursue the block-diagonal structure of the shared affinity matrix. SSSL-M regularizes multiple view-specific affinity matrices into a shared affinity matrix based on reconstruction through a unified framework consisting of backward encoding networks and the self-expressive mapping. The shared affinity matrix is comprehensive and can flexibly encode complementary information from multiple view-specific affinity matrices. An enhanced structural consistency of affinity matrices from different views can be achieved and the intrinsic relationships among affinity matrices from multiple views can be effectively reflected in this manner. Technically, we formulate the proposed model as an optimization problem, which can be solved by an alternating optimization scheme. Experimental results over seven different benchmark datasets demonstrate that better clustering results can be obtained by our method compared with the state-of-the-art approaches. Traditional image processing operators often provide some control parameters to tweak the final results. Recently, different convolutional neural networks have been used to approximate or improve these operators. However, in those methods, one single model can only handle one operator of a specific parameter value and does not support parameter tuning. In this paper, we propose a new plugin module, “Adaptive Filterbank Pyramid”, which can be inserted into a backbone network to support multiple operators and continuous parameter tuning. Our module explicitly represents one operator with one filterbank pyramid. To generate the results of a specific operator, the corresponding filterbank pyramid is convolved with the intermediate feature pyramid produced by the backbone network. The weights of the filterbank pyramid are directly regressed by another sub-network, which is jointly trained with the backbone network and adapted to the input parameter, thus enabling continuous parameter tuning. We applied the proposed module for a large variety of image processing tasks, including image smoothing, image denoising, image deblocking, image enhancement and neural style transfer. Experiments show that our method is generalized to different types of image processing tasks and different backbone network structures. Sparse representation has achieved great success in various image processing and computer vision tasks. For image processing, typical patch-based sparse representation (PSR) models usually tend to generate undesirable visual artifacts, while group-based sparse representation (GSR) models lean to produce over-smooth effects. In this paper, we propose a new sparse representation model, termed joint patch-group based sparse representation (JPG-SR). Compared with existing sparse representation models, the proposed JPG-SR provides an effective mechanism to integrate the local sparsity and nonlocal self-similarity of images. We then apply the proposed JPG-SR to image restoration tasks, including image inpainting and image deblocking. An iterative algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework is developed to solve the proposed JPG-SR based image restoration problems. Image restoration (IR) is a long-standing challenging problem in low-level image processing. It is of utmost importance to learn good image priors for pursuing visually pleasing results. In this paper, we develop a multi-channel and multi-model-based denoising autoencoder network as image prior for solving IR problem. Specifically, the network that trained on RGB-channel images is used to construct a prior at first, and then the learned prior is incorporated into single-channel grayscale IR tasks. To achieve the goal, we employ the auxiliary variable technique to integrate the higher-dimensional network-driven prior information into the iterative restoration procedure. In addition, according to the weighted aggregation idea, a multi-model strategy is put forward to enhance the network stability that favors to avoid getting trapped in local optima. Extensive experiments on image deblurring and deblocking tasks show that the proposed algorithm is efficient, robust, and yields state-of-the-art restoration quality on grayscale images. Curvilinear structure restoration in image processing procedures is a difficult task, which can be compounded when these structures are thin, i.e., when their smallest dimension is close to the resolution of the sensor. Many recent restoration methods involve considering a local gradient-based regularization term as prior, assuming gradient sparsity. An isotropic gradient operator is typically not suitable for thin curvilinear structures, since gradients are not sparse for these. In this paper, we propose a mixed gradient operator that combines a standard gradient in the isotropic image regions, and a directional gradient in the regions where specific orientations are likely. In particular, such information can be provided by curvilinear structure detectors (e.g., RORPO or Frangi filters). Our proposed mixed gradient operator, that can be viewed as a companion tool of such detectors, is proposed in a discrete framework and its formulation/computation holds in any dimension; in other words, it is valid in $\mathbb Z^{n}$ , ${n}\geq 1$. We show how this mixed gradient can be used to construct image priors that take edge orientation, as well as intensity, into account, and then involved in various image processing tasks while preserving curvilinear structures. The experiments carried out on 2D, 3D, real, and synthetic images illustrate the relevance of the proposed gradient, and its use in variational frameworks for both denoising and segmentation tasks. Multispectral imaging is of wide application for its capability in acquiring the spectral information of scenes. Due to hardware limitation, multispectral imaging device usually cannot achieve high-spatial resolution. To address the issue, this paper proposes a multispectral image super-resolution algorithm, referred as SRIF, by fusing the low-resolution multispectral image and the high-resolution (HR) RGB image. It deals with the general circumstance that image intensity is linear to scene radiance for multispectral imaging devices while is nonlinear and unknown for most RGB cameras. The SRIF algorithm first solves the inverse camera response function and a spectral sensitivity function of RGB camera, and establishes the linear relationship between multispectral and RGB images. Then the unknown HR multispectral image is efficiently reconstructed according to the linear image degradation models. Meanwhile, the edge structure of the reconstructed HR multispectral image is kept in accordance with that of the RGB image using a weighted total variation regularizer. The effectiveness of the SRIF algorithm is evaluated on both public datasets and our image set. Image annotation aims to annotate a given image with a variable number of class labels corresponding to diverse visual concepts. In this paper, we address two main issues in large-scale image annotation: 1) how to learn a rich feature representation suitable for predicting a diverse set of visual concepts ranging from object, scene to abstract concept and 2) how to annotate an image with the optimal number of class labels. To address the first issue, we propose a novel multi-scale deep model for extracting rich and discriminative features capable of representing a wide range of visual concepts. Specifically, a novel two-branch deep neural network architecture is proposed, which comprises a very deep main network branch and a companion feature fusion network branch designed for fusing the multi-scale features computed from the main branch. The deep model is also made multi-modal by taking noisy user-provided tags as model input to complement the image input. For tackling the second issue, we introduce a label quantity prediction auxiliary task to the main label prediction task to explicitly estimate the optimal label number for a given image. Extensive experiments are carried out on two large-scale image annotation benchmark datasets, and the results show that our method significantly outperforms the state of the art. Random walk is a popular and efficient algorithm for image segmentation, especially for extracting regions of interest (ROIs). One difficulty with the random walk algorithm is the requirement for solving a huge sparse linear system when applied to large images. Another limitation is its sensitivity to seeds distribution, i.e., the segmentation result depends on the number of seeds as well as their placement, which puts a burden on users. In this paper, we first propose a continuous random walk model with explicit coherence regularization (CRWCR) for the extracted ROI, which helps to reduce the seeds sensitivity, so as to reduce the user interactions. Then, a very efficient algorithm to solve the CRWCR model will be developed, which helps to remove the difficulty of solving huge linear systems. Our algorithm consists of two stages: initialization by performing one-dimensional random walk sweeping based on user-provided seeds, followed by the alternating direction scheme, i.e., Peaceman–Rachford scheme for further correction. The first stage aims to provide a good initial guess for the ROI, and it is very fast since we just solve a limited number of one-dimensional random walk problems. Then, this initial guess is evolved to the ideal solution by applying the second stage, which should also be very efficient since it fits well for GPU computing, and 10 iterations are usually sufficient for convergence. Nonlocal texture similarity and local intensity smoothness are both essential for solving most image inpainting problems. In this paper, we propose a novel image inpainting algorithm that is capable of reproducing the underlying textural details using a nonlocal texture measure and also smoothing pixel intensity seamlessly in order to achieve natural-looking inpainted images. For matching texture, we propose a Gaussian-weighted nonlocal texture similarity measure to obtain multiple candidate patches for each target patch. To compute the pixel intensity, we apply the $\alpha $ -trimmed mean filter to the candidate patches to inpaint the target patch pixel-by-pixel. The proposed algorithm is compared with four current image inpainting algorithms under different scenarios, including object removal, texture synthesis, and error concealment. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms when inpainting large missing regions in images with texture and geometric structures. In this paper, we propose an effective novel content-aware chroma reconstruction (CACR) method for screen content images (SCIs). After receiving the decoded downsampled YUV image on the client side, our fast chroma-copy approach reconstructs the missing chroma pixels in the flat regions of SCI. Then, for non-flat regions, a non-flat region-based winner-first voting (NRWV) strategy is proposed to identify the chroma subsampling scheme used on the server side prior to compression. Further, an effective adaptive hybrid approach is proposed to reconstruct each missing chroma pixel in the non-flat region by fusing the two reconstructed results, one from our modified NRWV-based chroma subsampling-binding and luma-guided chroma reconstruction scheme, which favors the sharp edges in SCI, as well as the other from the bicubic interpolation scheme, which favors blurred and continuous-tone textures. Further, based on the identified chroma subsampling scheme, a geometry alignment-based error compensation approach is proposed to enhance the reconstructed chroma image. Based on typical test SCIs and JCT-VC screen content videos, comprehensive experiments are carried out in HEVC-16.17 to demonstrate that in terms of quality, visual effect, and quality-bitrate tradeoff of the reconstructed SCIs, our CACR method significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods. A common problem in wide-baseline matching is the sparse and non-uniform distribution of correspondences when using conventional detectors, such as SIFT, SURF, FAST, A-KAZE, and MSER. In this paper, we introduce a novel segmentation-based feature detector (SFD) that produces an increased number of accurate features for wide-baseline matching. A multi-scale SFD is proposed using bilateral image decomposition to produce a large number of scale-invariant features for wide-baseline reconstruction. All input images are over-segmented into regions using any existing segmentation technique, such as Watershed, Mean-shift, and simple linear iterative clustering. Feature points are then detected at the intersection of the boundaries of three or more regions. The detected feature points are local maxima of the image function. The key advantage of feature detection based on segmentation is that it does not require global threshold setting and can, therefore, detect features throughout the image. A comprehensive evaluation demonstrates that SFD gives an increased number of features that are accurately localized and matched between wide-baseline camera views; the number of features for a given matching error increases by a factor of 3–5 compared with SIFT; feature detection and matching performance are maintained with increasing baseline between views; multi-scale SFD improves matching performance at varying scales. Application of SFD to sparse multi-view wide-baseline reconstruction demonstrates a factor of 10 increases in the number of reconstructed points with improved scene coverage compared with SIFT/MSER/A-KAZE. In this paper, a new video super-resolution reconstruction (SRR) method with improved robustness to outliers is proposed. Although the regularized least mean squares (R-LMSs) are one of the SRR algorithms with the best reconstruction quality for its computational cost, and is naturally robust to registration inaccuracies, its performance is known to degrade severely in the presence of innovation outliers. By studying the proximal point cost function representation of the R-LMS iterative equation, a better understanding of its performance under different situations is attained. Using statistical properties of typical innovation outliers, a new cost function is then proposed and two new algorithms are derived, which present improved robustness to outliers while maintaining computational costs comparable with that of R-LMS. The Monte–Carlo simulation results illustrate that the proposed method outperforms the traditional and regularized versions of LMS, and is competitive with state-of-the-art SRR methods at a much smaller computational cost. Style transfer describes the rendering of an image’s semantic content as different artistic styles. Recently, generative adversarial networks (GANs) have emerged as an effective approach in style transfer by adversarially training the generator to synthesize convincing counterfeits. However, traditional GAN suffers from the mode collapse issue, resulting in unstable training and making style transfer quality difficult to guarantee. In addition, the GAN generator is only compatible with one style, so a series of GANs must be trained to provide users with choices to transfer more than one kind of style. In this paper, we focus on tackling these challenges and limitations to improve style transfer. We propose adversarial gated networks (Gated-GAN) to transfer multiple styles in a single model. The generative networks have three modules: an encoder, a gated transformer, and a decoder. Different styles can be achieved by passing input images through different branches of the gated transformer. To stabilize training, the encoder and decoder are combined as an auto-encoder to reconstruct the input images. The discriminative networks are used to distinguish whether the input image is a stylized or genuine image. An auxiliary classifier is used to recognize the style categories of transferred images, thereby helping the generative networks generate images in multiple styles. In addition, Gated-GAN makes it possible to explore a new style by investigating styles learned from artists or genres. In this paper, we propose a Weighted Local sparse representation based Depth Image Super-Resolution (WLDISR) schemes aiming at improving the Virtual View Image (VVI) quality of 3D video system. Different from color images, depth images are mainly used to provide geometrical information in synthesizing VVI. Due to the view synthesis characteristics difference between textural structures and smooth regions of depth images, we divide the depth images into edge and smooth patches and learn two local dictionaries, respectively. Meanwhile, the weight term is derived and incorporated explicitly in the cost function to denote different importance of edge structures and smooth regions to the VVI quality. Then, local sparse representation and weighted sparse representation are jointly used in both dictionary learning and reconstruction phases in depth image super-resolution. Based on different optimizations on learning and reconstruction modules, three WLDISR schemes, WLDISR-D, WLDISR-R, and WLDISR-ALL, are proposed. Experimental results on 3D sequences demonstrate that the proposed WLDISR-D, WLDISR-R, and WLDISR-ALL schemes can achieve more than 1.9-, 2.03-, and 2.16-dB gains on average, respectively, in terms of the VVIs’ quality, as compared with the state-of-the-art schemes. Image restoration methods aim to recover the underlying clean image from corrupted observations. The expected patch log-likelihood (EPLL) algorithm is a powerful image restoration method that uses a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) prior on the patches of natural images. Although it is very effective for restoring images, its high runtime complexity makes the EPLL ill-suited for most practical applications. In this paper, we propose three approximations to the original EPLL algorithm. The resulting algorithm, which we call the fast-EPLL (FEPLL), attains a dramatic speed-up of two orders of magnitude over EPLL while incurring a negligible drop in the restored image quality (less than 0.5 dB). We demonstrate the efficacy and versatility of our algorithm on a number of inverse problems, such as denoising, deblurring, super-resolution, inpainting, and devignetting. To the best of our knowledge, the FEPLL is the first algorithm that can competitively restore a $512\times 512$ pixel image in under 0.5 s for all the degradations mentioned earlier without specialized code optimizations, such as CPU parallelization or GPU implementation. Example learning-based single image super-resolution (SR) is a promising method for reconstructing a high-resolution (HR) image from a single-input low-resolution (LR) image. Lots of popular SR approaches are more likely either time-or space-intensive, which limit their practical applications. Hence, some research has focused on a subspace view and delivered state-of-the-art results. In this paper, we utilize an effective way with mixture prior models to transform the large nonlinear feature space of LR images into a group of linear subspaces in the training phase. In particular, we first partition image patches into several groups by a novel selective patch processing method based on difference curvature of LR patches, and then learning the mixture prior models in each group. Moreover, different prior distributions have various effectiveness in SR, and in this case, we find that student-t prior shows stronger performance than the well-known Gaussian prior. In the testing phase, we adopt the learned multiple mixture prior models to map the input LR features into the appropriate subspace, and finally reconstruct the corresponding HR image in a novel mixed matching way. Image colorization aims to produce a natural looking color image from a given gray-scale image, which remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel example-based image colorization method exploiting a new locality consistent sparse representation. Given a single reference color image, our method automatically colorizes the target gray-scale image by sparse pursuit. For efficiency and robustness, our method operates at the superpixel level. We extract low-level intensity features, mid-level texture features, and high-level semantic features for each superpixel, which are then concatenated to form its descriptor. The collection of feature vectors for all the superpixels from the reference image composes the dictionary. We formulate colorization of target superpixels as a dictionary-based sparse reconstruction problem. Inspired by the observation that superpixels with similar spatial location and/or feature representation are likely to match spatially close regions from the reference image, we further introduce a locality promoting regularization term into the energy formulation, which substantially improves the matching consistency and subsequent colorization results. Target superpixels are colorized based on the chrominance information from the dominant reference superpixels. Finally, to further improve coherence while preserving sharpness, we develop a new edge-preserving filter for chrominance channels with the guidance from the target gray-scale image. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on sparse pursuit image colorization from single reference images. We consider an acquisition system where a continuous, band-limited image is reconstructed from a set of irregularly distributed, noisy samples. An optimal estimator can be obtained by exploiting Least Squares, but it is not practical to compute when the data size is large. A simpler, widely used estimate can be obtained by properly rounding off the pointing information, but it is suboptimal and is affected by a bias, which may be large and thus limits its applicability. To solve this problem, we develop a mathematical model for the acquisition system, which accounts for the pointing information round off. Based on the model, we derive a novel optimal estimate, which has a manageable computational complexity and is largely immune from the bias, making it a better option than the suboptimal one. Moreover, the model opens a new, fruitful point of view on the estimation performance analysis. Finally, we consider the application of the novel estimate to the data of the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer instrument. Near-infrared gray images captured along with corresponding visible color images have recently proven useful for image restoration and classification. This paper introduces a new coloring method to add colors to near-infrared gray images based on a contrast-preserving mapping model. A naive coloring method directly adds the colors from the visible color image to the near-infrared gray image. However, this method results in an unrealistic image because of the discrepancies in the brightness and image structure between the captured near-infrared gray image and the visible color image. To solve the discrepancy problem, first, we present a new contrast-preserving mapping model to create a new near-infrared gray image with a similar appearance in the luminance plane to the visible color image, while preserving the contrast and details of the captured near-infrared gray image. Then, we develop a method to derive realistic colors that can be added to the newly created near-infrared gray image based on the proposed contrast-preserving mapping model. Experimental results show that the proposed new method not only preserves the local contrast and details of the captured near-infrared gray image, but also transfers the realistic colors from the visible color image to the newly created near-infrared gray image. Illumination decomposition for a single photograph is an important and challenging problem in image editing operation. In this paper, we present a novel coarse-to-fine strategy to perform illumination decomposition for photograph with multiple light sources. We first reconstruct the lighting environment of the image using the estimated geometry structure of the scene. With the position of lights, we detect the shadow regions as well as the highlights in the projected image for each light. Then, using the illumination cues from shadows, we estimate the coarse illumination decomposed image emitted by each light source. Finally, we present a light-aware illumination optimization model, which efficiently produces the finer illumination decomposition results, as well as recover the texture detail under the shadow. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for scalable image coding based on the concept of epitome. An epitome can be seen as a factorized representation of an image. Focusing on spatial scalability, the enhancement layer of the proposed scheme contains only the epitome of the input image. The pixels of the enhancement layer not contained in the epitome are then restored using two approaches inspired from local learning-based super-resolution methods. In the first method, a locally linear embedding model is learned on base layer patches and then applied to the corresponding epitome patches to reconstruct the enhancement layer. The second approach learns linear mappings between pairs of co-located base layer and epitome patches. Accurate prediction of the visual attributes is significant in various recognition tasks. For many visual attributes, while it is very difficult to describe the exact degrees of their presences, by comparing the pairs of samples, the relative ordering of presences may be easily figured out. Based on this observation, instead of considering such attribute as binary attribute, the relative attribute method learns a ranking function for each attribute to provide more accurate and informative prediction results. In this paper, we also explore pairwise ranking for visual attribute prediction and propose to improve the relative attribute method in two aspects. First, we propose a relative tree method, which can achieve more accurate ranking in case of nonlinearly distributed visual data. Second, by resorting to randomization and ensemble learning, the relative tree method is extended to the relative forest method to further boost the accuracy and simultaneously reduce the computational cost. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, we conduct extensive experiments on four databases: PubFig, OSR, FGNET, and WebFace. The results show that the proposed relative forest method not only outperforms the original relative attribute method, but also achieve the state-of-the-art accuracy for ordinal visual attribute prediction. Dictionary-based super-resolution (SR) algorithms usually select dictionary atoms based on the distance or similarity metrics. Although the optimal selection of the nearest neighbors is of central importance for such methods, the impact of using proper metrics for SR has been overlooked in literature, mainly due to the vast usage of Euclidean distance. In this paper, we present a very fast regression-based algorithm, which builds on the densely populated anchored neighborhoods and sublinear search structures. We perform a study of the nature of the features commonly used for SR, observing that those features usually lie in the unitary hypersphere, where every point has a diametrically opposite one, i.e., its antipode, with same module and angle, but the opposite direction. Even though, we validate the benefits of using antipodally invariant metrics, most of the binary splits use Euclidean distance, which does not handle antipodes optimally. In order to benefit from both the worlds, we propose a simple yet effective antipodally invariant transform that can be easily included in the Euclidean distance calculation. We modify the original spherical hashing algorithm with this metric in our antipodally invariant spherical hashing scheme, obtaining the same performance as a pure antipodally invariant metric. We round up our contributions with a novel feature transform that obtains a better coarse approximation of the input image thanks to iterative backprojection. This paper investigates the use of a qualitative inverse scattering method known as the linear sampling method (LSM) for imaging underwater scenes using limited aperture receiver configurations. The LSM is based on solving a set of unstable integral equations known as the far-field equations and whose stability breaks down even further for under-sampled observation aperture data. Based on the results of a recent study concerning multi-frequency LSM imaging, we propose an iterative inversion method that is founded upon a compressive sensing framework. In particular, we leverage multi-frequency diversity in the data by imposing a partial frequency variation prior on the solution which we show is justified when the frequency bandwidth is sampled finely enough. We formulate an alternating direction method of multiplier approach to minimize the proposed cost function. Proof of concept is established through numerically generated data as well as experimental acoustic measurements taken in a shallow pool facility at the U.S Naval Research Laboratory. Vehicle lane-level localization is a fundamental technology in autonomous driving. To achieve accurate and consistent performance, a common approach is to use the LIDAR technology. However, it is expensive and computational demanding, and thus not a practical solution in many situations. This paper proposes a stereovision system, which is of low cost, yet also able to achieve high accuracy and consistency. It integrates a new lane line detection algorithm with other lane marking detectors to effectively identify the correct lane line markings. It also fits multiple road models to improve accuracy. An effective stereo 3D reconstruction method is proposed to estimate vehicle localization. The estimation consistency is further guaranteed by a new particle filter framework, which takes vehicle dynamics into account. Experiment results based on image sequences taken under different visual conditions showed that the proposed system can identify the lane line markings with 98.6% accuracy. The maximum estimation error of the vehicle distance to lane lines is 16 cm in daytime and 26 cm at night, and the maximum estimation error of its moving direction with respect to the road tangent is 0.06 rad in daytime and 0.12 rad at night. Super resolution (SR) for real-life video sequences is a challenging problem due to complex nature of the motion fields. In this paper, a novel blind SR method is proposed to improve the spatial resolution of video sequences, while the overall point spread function of the imaging system, motion fields, and noise statistics are unknown. To estimate the blur(s), first, a nonuniform interpolation SR method is utilized to upsample the frames, and then, the blur(s) is(are) estimated through a multi-scale process. The blur estimation process is initially performed on a few emphasized edges and gradually on more edges as the iterations continue. Also for faster convergence, the blur is estimated in the filter domain rather than the pixel domain. The high-resolution frames are estimated using a cost function that has the fidelity and regularization terms of type Huber–Markov random field to preserve edges and fine details. The fidelity term is adaptively weighted at each iteration using a masking operation to suppress artifacts due to inaccurate motions. Very promising results are obtained for real-life videos containing detailed structures, complex motions, fast-moving objects, deformable regions, or severe brightness changes. The proposed method outperforms the state of the art in all performed experiments through both subjective and objective evaluations. In this paper, we address the problem of imaging membrane proteins for single-particle cryo-electron microscopy reconstruction of the isolated protein structure. More precisely, we propose a method for learning and removing the interfering vesicle signals from the micrograph, prior to reconstruction. In our approach, we estimate the subspace of the vesicle structures and project the micrographs onto the orthogonal complement of this subspace. We construct a 2D statistical model of the vesicle structure, based on higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD), by considering the structural symmetries of the vesicles in the polar coordinate plane. We then propose to lift the HOSVD model to a novel hierarchical model by summarizing the multidimensional HOSVD coefficients by their principal components. Along with the model, a solid vesicle normalization scheme and model selection criterion are proposed to make a compact and general model. The results show that the vesicle structures are accurately separated from the background by the HOSVD model that is also able to adapt to the asymmetries of the vesicles. Dictionary learning algorithms have been successfully used for both reconstructive and discriminative tasks, where an input signal is represented with a sparse linear combination of dictionary atoms. While these methods are mostly developed for single-modality scenarios, recent studies have demonstrated the advantages of feature-level fusion based on the joint sparse representation of the multimodal inputs. In this paper, we propose a multimodal task-driven dictionary learning algorithm under the joint sparsity constraint (prior) to enforce collaborations among multiple homogeneous/heterogeneous sources of information. In this task-driven formulation, the multimodal dictionaries are learned simultaneously with their corresponding classifiers. The resulting multimodal dictionaries can generate discriminative latent features (sparse codes) from the data that are optimized for a given task such as binary or multiclass classification. Moreover, we present an extension of the proposed formulation using a mixed joint and independent sparsity prior, which facilitates more flexible fusion of the modalities at feature level. The efficacy of the proposed algorithms for multimodal classification is illustrated on four different applications—multimodal face recognition, multi-view face recognition, multi-view action recognition, and multimodal biometric recognition. It is also shown that, compared with the counterpart reconstructive-based dictionary learning algorithms, the task-driven formulations are more computationally efficient in the sense that they can be equipped with more compact dictionaries and still achieve superior performance. In this paper, we propose a new video inpainting method which applies to both static or free-moving camera videos. The method can be used for object removal, error concealment, and background reconstruction applications. To limit the computational time, a frame is inpainted by considering a small number of neighboring pictures which are grouped into a group of pictures (GoP). More specifically, to inpaint a frame, the method starts by aligning all the frames of the GoP. This is achieved by a region-based homography computation method which allows us to strengthen the spatial consistency of aligned frames. Then, from the stack of aligned frames, an energy function based on both spatial and temporal coherency terms is globally minimized. This energy function is efficient enough to provide high quality results even when the number of pictures in the GoP is rather small, e.g. 20 neighboring frames. This drastically reduces the algorithm complexity and makes the approach well suited for near real-time video editing applications as well as for loss concealment applications. Experiments with several challenging video sequences show that the proposed method provides visually pleasing results for object removal, error concealment, and background reconstruction context. In this paper, we address the total variation (TV)-based nonlinear image restoration problems. In nonlinear image restoration problems, an original image is corrupted by a spatiallyinvariant blur, the build-in nonlinearity in imaging system, and the additive Gaussian white noise. We study the objective function consisting of the nonlinear least squares data-fitting term and the TV regularization term of the restored image. By making use of the structure of the objective function, an efficient alternating direction method of multipliers can be developed for solving the proposed model. The convergence of the numerical scheme is also studied. Numerical examples, including nonlinear image restoration and high-dynamic range imaging are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and the efficiency of the proposed numerical scheme. Filtered backprojection, one of the most widely used reconstruction methods in tomography, requires a large number of low-noise projections to yield accurate reconstructions. In many applications of tomography, complete projection data of high quality cannot be obtained, because of practical considerations. Algebraic methods tend to handle such problems better, but are computationally more expensive. In this paper, we introduce a new method that improves the filtered backprojection method by using a custom data-dependent filter that minimizes the projection error of the resulting reconstruction. We show that the computational cost of the new method is significantly lower than that of algebraic methods. Experiments on both simulation and experimental data show that the method is able to produce more accurate reconstructions than filtered backprojection based on popular static filters when presented with data with a limited number of projections or statistical noise present. Furthermore, the results show that the method produces reconstructions with similar accuracy to algebraic methods, but is faster at producing them. Finally, we show that the method can be extended to exploit certain forms of prior knowledge, improving reconstruction accuracy in specific cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) has received considerable attention in image processing, computer vision, and patter recognition. An important variant of NMF is nonnegative graph embedding (NGE), which encodes the statistical or geometric information of data in the process of matrix factorization. The NGE offers a general framework for unsupervised/supervised settings. However, NGE-like algorithms often suffer from noisy data, unreliable graphs, and noisy labels, which are commonly encountered in real-world applications. To address these issues, in this paper, we first propose a robust nonnegative graph embedding (RNGE) framework, where the joint sparsity in both graph embedding and data reconstruction endues robustness to undesirable noises. Next, we present a robust seminonnegative graph embedding (RsNGE) framework, which only constrains the coefficient matrix to be nonnegative while places no constraint on the base matrix. This extends the applicable range of RNGE to data which are not nonnegative and endows more discriminative power of the learnt base matrix. The RNGE/RsNGE provides a general formulation such that all the algorithms unified within the graph embedding framework can be easily extended to obtain their robust nonnegative/seminonnegative solutions. Further, we develop elegant multiplicative updating solutions that can solve RNGE/RsNGE efficiently and offer a rigorous convergence analysis. We conduct extensive experiments on four real-world data sets and compare the proposed RNGE/RsNGE to other representative NMF variants and data factorization methods.
